Of all the versions on film of the story, none do the novel, only Rick's musical version is faithful to the book. In 1974 for my tenth birthday, I got the album as a present, nearly wore it out playing it so much. Such a good album, wish I'd been older and at the concert!. Wakeman released 'Return to the Centre of the Earth' around the late 90's. He's also extended and reworked it but for me, the '74 original is a classic.

Was great to re-live this album & that epic performance. I recall back in the day Rick was a bit of a phenomenon. He brought this tour down under & I remember as a young teenager watching the Melbourne performance live on black & white tv, it was amazing! Would highly recommend "Merlin" & "The black knight" from "Myths & legends of....." & "Statue of Justice" (Chris Squire & Allan White give guest appearances) & "Judas Iscariot" from "Criminal record", brilliant stuff!! Cheers

Journey to the Centre of the Earth is one of progressive rock's crowning achievements. With the help of the London Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Choir, Rick Wakeman turns this classic Jules Verne tale into an exciting and suspenseful instrumental narrative ... The whole of Journey to the Centre of the Earth still stands as one of the most interesting conglomerations of orchestral and synthesized music ... Journey to the Center of the Earth was released to tremendous public response in both America and England, where it topped the charts. - Excerpts from AllMusic
Journey to the Centre of the Earth was overall well received by music critics. Journey earned Wakeman a Grammy and Ivor Novello Award nomination. On 27 July 1974, Wakeman headlined the Crystal Palace Garden Party concert, performing selections from Six Wives and Journey in its entirety. - Wikipedia

Remember that this is a live recording made just on 50 years ago with all the recording limitations of that time. Micing all the orchestra and the choir would have been a massive task. Like many others my copy was worn out in a few short months of constant playing. Hard to pick my favourite track but The Battle is up there.

I know he performed the whole piece at the London Palladium earlier this year - because I was very lucky to be there for both nights and all 4 sets were astonishing. To top it off I got to meet Chris Welch, a journalist who championed many prog bands and drew our attention to what we should be taking note of. It felt really good to say how grateful myself and many of my friends were to his efforts.

He had a nice run of solo albums early in his solo career, but this remains my favorite. I love his playing, the arrangement, the orchestra, the choir, the storytelling, etc. It doesn't hurt that I was a big fan of the 1959 film that you referenced, growing up. I think the only weakness is some of the vocals, but they grow on you, so it's a minor nit.

@@retroreactions...., in this case it's more a matter of evoking sentimental memories. One of the reasons why ABBA and the Beatles are so big, above good and evil, is that everyone who lived during their heyday has several stories to tell that happened to the sound of some of their songs, and memories are instantly evoked when they listen to those songs again. In my case, this happens with Rick Wakeman, Supertramp, and Pink Floyd, who dominated my teenage soundscape.
Rick Wakeman solo was far more successful and popular here than Yes ever was, so much that at the height of his success he filled the huge Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro (the world's largest soccer stadium) for a sold-out concert for over 100,000 people, plus a 2-hour TV special! (Many years later, when I was a young adult and his popularity had already waned, I saw him live in my hometown during the "1984" launch tour.) Although some of my friends were big Yes fans, it wasn't part of my formative soundtrack, and I was a late comer to their work, but Rick was huge for me and many other people who came of age at that time. I was unable to come for your live broadcast, but in the chat replay I saw another Brazilian saying that "Journey..." was the album of his life. I wouldn't go that far, but I do understand him, and it's certainly one of the albums of my life (I don't have just one).
My story with Rick started in 1973 or '74, when my mom went shopping at a hypermarket, for some reason I didn't go with her that time (I usually did), and she came back with a record for me, saying: "I don't know what this is, but there was a frenzy when I passed by the record department, and everybody was buying this, so I brought it for you." It was "The Six Wives of Henry VIII", and I soon found out that the frenzy was totally justified. It's an AMAZING record! And curiously, my mom liked it, too, which was rare (she also made an exception for most of Pink Floyd).
As my musical taste and culture have matured, now I find some of Rick's work too over the top and dangerously bordering on kitsch, but "The Six Wives..." stood the test of time, keyboard playing at its best. My favorite track as a whole is still the first, "Catherine of Aragon", but the ending of "Anne Boleyn" is the pinnacle of the album IMO, and the organ in "Jane Seymour" is outstanding, too, and honestly, there isn't a bad track. If and when you react to it, you'll see that Rick sounds curiously reminiscent of Keith Emerson, a keyboard player so great that he influenced even other great players.
So, after the huge success of "The Six Wives..." (which had had very little promotion and was mostly by word of mouth in that pre-Internet and pre-social networks era), when "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" arrived, it was an even greater frenzy. You should see the luxurious production of the original album: double sleeve with an 8-page full-size inner leaflet in expensive glossy couché paper with pictures of the concert (it seems that they used back-projection on a huge screen, which is primitive today but was very advanced for 1974). Featuring a full orchestra and choir, it sounded much more monumental than "The Six Wives..." and it soon became Rick's signature album, the first thing that will come to mind when you mention Rick Wakeman to many people from my generation.
Well, I wish you could have seen MY reaction to your reaction! I don't remember the last time I listened to this album, certainly many, many years ago. But I sang along all the vocal parts with very few lyrics mistakes, and the same happened with the narration parts. That's how imprinted this album was on me, and how important it was as the soundtrack of a period of my life. I felt transported to my room at the time (and you know how important a teenager's room is in their life). I could see my bed, my desk, the posters on the wall. It was a very emotional ride. Thank you for that!
Oh, and that extravagant album sleeve also included the text: "Thanks to Grieg for 'The Hall of the Mountain King'. Because I stole a few bars." And I'm quoting by memory!

To me this is like comfort food for the soul. I picked up this album as a freshman in high school and has stayed with me since. Rick is truly the master of classic prog rock keyboards with the passing of Kieth Emerson and Jon Lord. I'm certain you will also enjoy Rick's "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table" album. And his other 70's mastermind album "No Earthly Connection"

A true masterpiece!!! Epic. The brass section, masterful! What more or better could you ask for? Ah, that great era of concept albums where intelligent creativity yielded nothing to commercial compromises and media formatting! I own five RICK WAKEMAN albums. 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' (1974) is one of them and comes second in my ranking. In first place, 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII' (1973) and in third place, 'The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table' (1975). In 1999, Wakeman released a sequel to JCE titled: 'Return to the Center of the Earth'. He performs there with equal brilliance; but alas, the whole album is not as musically creative. For the record, in this suite, we find a certain Ozzy Osbourne singing (!!!). Many thanks for giving us this exceptional listening experience. 🎆
[NB1: YES was not only made up of prodigious virtuoso musicians. They were also cultivated minds... and of bookish culture, in particular.]
[NB2: Have you ever listened to TONY BANKS' solo albums (studio and orchestral)? I have no doubt that yes! His first, 'A Curious Feeling' (studio, 1979) is my favorite, the most authentic. However, I cannot ignore the album 'Strictly Inc' (1995) and this, mainly because of the last composition "An Island in the Darkness"; a gem of musical intelligence! As for production with a large orchestra, in my opinion these are not his best albums; but if I had to nominate my preference, I would choose 'Five' (2018); the most and best developed.]
[NB3: We only need to listen to the albums of the solo careers of Hackett and Banks to be convinced that the musical and sound identity of GENESIS was them. I know, it's a fixed idea with me!]
