Sam I was thinking about you on my last ice time. I have been suggesting a new glove for you and then last ice time I couldn't catch a cold! You keep it up. These tips helped me and they look like they helped you too. Next ice time I'll be a windmill machine. Cheered bud!
@@marklockwood5641 nice! And yeah I don’t think it’s the glove, it I really think it’s just how I’m trying to catch a it. Once I get that sorted I’ll be good to go 👍
I agree, it is easy to just move on from something if someone is not getting it, but I liked tat he actually cared about me doing everything correctly.
I wish I had a goalie coach like him when I played. Everything he said and showed you made so much sense. Everything you learned from him can only improve your game
100% and I loved that he showed me the basics and made sure I got it right before going forward. Rather then trying to just get through the drill. It was a great session.
Goalie coaches are really life changing. I was lucky enough to have access to one in high school as well as ice time 4 times a week, I started off as a B or A level goalie. By the end of my high school career I was a starter in Div1 Varsity as well as playing AAA Midget. Watching videos also helps but that physical coaching is life changing.
Also yes the main skill gap in goaltending is skating and fitness. Goalies that are great with their edges and skating as well as their conditioning are basically set to be elite goalies.
Couldn’t agree more. I can’t wait to get on the ice with Nick again to continue developing my footwork and skating as well as practicing simple save selections and movements to to reduce the amount of energy used throughout the game.
To be honest, I had no idea how much of a difference edge work was needed and the reason why he asked you to sharpen your skates. A lot of my past comments have been about your rebound control and those loose pucks; but DANG! What a huge difference it was when you put more focus on the edge work. It was explosive and your reaction to saving pucks resulted into better control of those pucks. Those C-cuts definitely looked like a huge improvement. Can't wait to see you put this altogether in a game and show off the new stuff!
Me too! Super excited to continue to work with Nick and to see how it effects my game when I start playing again. Hopefully sooner then later but for now, I’m going to focus on getting as much time with Nick as possible.
Hey. It’s me remember me? It was like two years ago but I used to be named Bd. Lyle. I’m pretty sure. Your channel has progressed so much in the past two years and so have you. As long as you keep working you’ll make it to the big leagues. I remember when I was watching you at 10 yrs old and commenting dumb stuff but now I’m 13 and it’s insane how much you’ve grown! Keep up the good work.
I have just started watching your videos and I love them!! In fact it’s inspiring me to creat my own channel. I play roller pick up hockey for fun, havent made the ice switch yet. But watching this video alone and learning to put my glove further out has helped me out so much! Tuesday night I had 32 shots on and only let 4 in. Love the videos and content!
Hey Eric, that is awesome. Luckily the position is the same regardless if you are on ice or roller minus a few of the technical details since sliding is a bit harder on roller. But keep it up and I hope my past and future content will help you even more! Thanks for watching :)
7:30 Aspect or small detail of what he isn't telling you the reason for this is if you bring your glove or blocker back you are twisting your body. So the 90 or 180 save does have it place but not in a controlled manner when the save should be made at 45 to keep you squared for the next shot should a rebound come off. This difference between when I played as we made save at 90 so that we directed the puck to the corners more. This is trapping or controlled game style. Great review at the end and a lot of truths. This is why the work off the ice in the gym, dry land and video time are more important today to understand the small details that can really drive you game forward. Understanding is only half the battle but getting body to be able to put the understanding to work is the other half; not to mention understanding when to throw the book away. Good Video and Good Goalie coach from what I seen from this video.
You are 100% right and he did explain this when we were doing the warmup outside, I just didn't want to make the video so long but you are right. And I agree about the body being able to do it is just as important as understanding what to do. I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Some of those saves were so awesome!! You could definitely tell the difference in when you were getting tired. I love these videos and Im not just a viewer saying that. I mean it!!! Great video!!
Just came back from a match. Watching your résumé in the end brought me back 12y to the first training with the coach of MB, just 4 days, 3 consecutive years. Man those trainigsessions were heaven and hell. But worth it every damn second. After 20y of playing still learning. Great sport, definitely best position.
I’ve subscribed and have been watching your videos for about a month or two now. They have been incredibly informative and entertaining. Thank you for taking the time to produce these and with such good quality!
Fitness and endurance is key. You can know what to do in any circumstance, but if your body won't get there efficiently you'll leave a hole, fail to focus correctly etc. Speaking from experience.
100% agree. I think that is my biggest obstacle right now. Yes I am learning the technique but if I am to tired to apply it, then it doesn't matter. But it's funny, if I focus on the technique more, I work less which preserves energy. So it also has to do with making the technique subconscious so you do it naturally when in a game.
I loved this video! I was unsure at first because it wasn’t your normal groove, but as someone who’s never really been on the ice with a goalie coach I found this both entertaining and very educational. It was entertaining in that it’s hockey so that’s obvious, it was educational in that he went over small basic changes that as a beginner myself found made a world of a difference, and it was also very funny. I laughed out loud when the coffin dance thing came up and when you were explaining in short breath the difference between beer league and elite goalies. I hope you do more things like this, thank you Sam!
I’m glad that you liked it and I will be doing more of these videos with Nick especially now that my current winter season is on hold. So hit that notification bell so you don’t miss them 👍
Yeah, I feel like the more I work with Nick the better I’ll be at controlling those rebounds and just stopping the play after the first shot. I’m glad the video helped you too!
Super interesting! Just the advice on how to properly capture the puck with the glove, in front, for me it will be to put into practice. I catch the puck often parallel to me and without even looking.
Hey man, new to hockey and new to goalie here. It would be really helpful if you made a, "So, You Want To Be A Goalie," series where you cover some of the more basic and beginner goalie aspects, including like, off ice training and drills and what not. It could start at the new/beginner level and work up to intermediate and eventually advanced! Thanks for the vids man been enjoying them!
Great timing with this video, Sam. I've been struggling with a toaster glove lately myself. Thought it was only because I'm struggling to work it in fully still, but it could also be where I'm holding it when I'm trying to make saves. Lots of good info there. Thanks!
Great job, I notice towards the end of the video when t-pushing, you were looking at the crease and then the shooter. I would try either just looking at the shooter and t-push to him, or have markers like the blue line, face off dot, or red line to check you angle
That’s great advice. I think I was just try to not fall over at that point because I was exhausted. But I do agree with you and I typically don’t use my crease for reference like that. But I’ll be more aware if I am doing it next time I am on the ice with him.
I was a baseball catcher. Keeping the puck in my glove was never an issue. It’s hand-eye coordination learned from an early age. Skating was the issue for me. These days, though, conditioning is a huge issue, and efficient technique helps that.
So the one thing that really improved my kids game catching the puck is this. Every single drill we do is with his glove on. We noticed when he caught things bare handed that’s actually the palm of his glove. Once we made that change his glove is like a vacuum. Just my thoughts. Great job and nice workout.
I agree that is a great idea, for the warmup it was more designed to get my chin activated and to just get going. But I agree, if I was doing this as a drill then I would also use my glove. 👍
Juggling is a super great tool to improve catching abilities. It help a lot coordinate the hand-eye. It something I will always say to young goalies, juggle all the time with everything.
I am an tendy too. I know how stressful these exercises are. I have twice a week training on the ice and we play sametimes 3v3 on the little field with kindy no pause. Thats heavy. But i love it :D

Yeah, goaltending has changed a lot in the last 25 years so that advice is outdated for sure. I’m sorry to hear that your glove suffered because of bad coaching. That’s never good.
Actually I extremely advise and Maria Mountain points this out aswell that when you glove train / eye co-ordination to catch - always use your ‘Glove’. Not bare hand. Why you get pop off your hand is because your mind and hand is use to catching it there. Where do we actually catch the puck? In the pocket that is above our hand - slight degree and angle. Try this.
Not even gonna lie, I went to bed one day woke up the next morning and then it all clicked and my glove got really good quick. It just takes a lot of practice! Now I gotta work on my blocker a bit because I’m getting beat short side every time.

It all comes down to whether or not you want to get better and if you do, a coach will help you 10x faster then trying to learn on your own especially if you do not know what you are looking for.
hey. great video. one thing you're doing in that first drill is you're catching the ball with the palm of your hand, and that's not where the basquet part of your glove is, you're teaching yourself to catch the ball with the palm of the glove where the puck bounces off really quick. every time you do a hand eye coordination to improve your goalie glove skills...use your goalie glove and catch the ball with the net of the glove. check this video ua-cam.com/video/tH-Uy0cDLSA/v-deo.html

Yeah, it’s a habit we must work on to make it become consistent.
I’m gassed just watching this 😅
And you didn’t even get to see the full 50 minutes session. We started with like 10 minutes of skating lol
@@ThePuckStopsHere yeah id be a dead guy after all that
You tube actually made me a better goalie. So inefficient my way lol
hello sam
Hey!
OMG you replied
Wanna sell the set up?
Buy a sparx. That's what I did. Got sick of people not knowing how to sharpen goalie skates the right way.
No offence to you I’m a duster but that other goalie was just sooo good like his skating and stuff is perfect
I’ve been to Sam’s apartment"......... just saying
Haha, yes you have!
Man its hard to dig out of bad habits im teaching myself
mask yes
Cool 👍
@@ThePuckStopsHere also, GREAT video! I gotta find a goalie coach.....
I might get a mask, but I would rather something simple.
Like in terms of design?
I played nets my whole life, how can you not catch a puck its the first thing you learn
30 years ago, they would say get it out of your glove, today they say keep it in..wtf
I am a hockey player and idkw I’m watching a goalie video
This looks like the same for catching a baseball. You never catch a baseball by your ear
I want mask

hey. great video. one thing you're doing in that first drill is you're catching the ball with the palm of your hand, and that's not where the basquet part of your glove is, you're teaching yourself to catch the ball with the palm of the glove where the puck bounces off really quick. every time you do a hand eye coordination to improve your goalie glove skills...use your goalie glove and catch the ball with the net of the glove. check this video ua-cam.com/video/tH-Uy0cDLSA/v-deo.html
I guess sometimes the puck doesn’t stop here LOL
P
those mask would be sick
Cool 👍
buy a baseball glove and just pay catch.. that will help.
What about your lisp?
