😂
I'd keep the Seiko 5 .
you’re paying for the spring drive on grand seiko
Paying for marketing bollox as well @@todwstam
Grand seiko hardly markets, a lot of hand work goes into these watches and the engineering to make the spring drive blows my mind. @keefw361
For the price - seiko 5 but….. GS just produces watches you could stare at every day for the rest of your life.
Real
@@notaulgoodman9732Illusion
It looks boring
i dont own a GS so i cant speak about that, but i catch myself staring at my SNXS79 everytime i wear it
I have budget for self-esteem present to myself.
I'm impressed GS Springdrive.
I just realized I would store it in a vault.
It would be a huge waste of art.
Watch reviews also started to remember me to Andersen's tale about The Emperor's New Clothes.
Moonphase, second hand, lume, 'swiss made' and many other features are not important to me.
So I just bought a Casio A500 and use the budget to something else.
But I respect every kind of other decisions.
Seiko 5, all day long. I have one sinds 1991.Dark blue dail. Never had a problem. Never going to leave my collection.

Broke mentality
That's fucked up
You wouldn't if you could afford it, but of course not be stupid and wear it in situations that requires a rugged watch
You only live once
@@christianbautista321 it really depends on the watch. A Rolex sport watch, such as the Submariner and GMT Master, are very tough and can handle anything. I wear my Submariner while working on cars, big trucks, skiing, woodworking, etc.
It is built to be worn every day, in extreme weather and during all sorts of activities.
The GS is very accurate more than Rolex from what I read.
Depends on the movement, but certainly possible. My GS here is a hi-beat that’s on par with my neovintage Rolex, around +2/-2s per day. My hand wound mechanical GS is closer to +8-10spd. I’m hoping to get a Spring Drive next which would be more like 0.5spd!
@@everydaycarryif your GS is nearly 10 seconds a day, it needs servicing.
My Spring drive gained 13 seconds in 6 months. My GS quartz gained 3 seconds in 9 months. Both are magnitudes more accurate than a Rolex.
My 53 year old GS is -1/2 spd. My next is going to have a 9f movement with +\- 5 seconds a year. No Rolex will come close to that.
Your Spring Drive is quartz regulated. Your quartz is, well, quartz. When you compare Grand Seiko automatics to Rolex automatics, Rolex wins.
Seiko 5! A legend for already 50 years!
Very good readability and price-worthy!
It has a simple, self-developed movement of Seiko without Chronometer Certificate. But if you're able to open the watch by yourself and adjust it you can tune it down to +/- 3 seconds per day or even less. It's incredibly accurate! 😃👍
That snxs can be that accurate ? For real ? I had one and I love it but it’s not accurate at this moment
@@jeff346 Under certain conditions: yes!
When you have a mechanical watch storage it over night (8 to 10 hrs) in the 5 standard positions (12 down, face up, face down, crown down etc.). Find out the most extreme advances and retards. Mechanical watches run in advance in winter when the balance spring is shorter and in retard in summer when the balance spring is longer.
If you compare every few days the time of your mechanical watch with a reliable source (for example a radio controlled watch) and you storage your watch over night in a position accordingly you can achieve a very, very high accuracy of your mechanical watch, even of a Seiko 5!
It will not happen by itself and out of the box. But if you make the fundamental reglage by yourself and keep an eye on your watch - it is possible! 😉👍
What's the difference? Well apart of a dial that is stunning on GS you forgot to mention THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, and that is movement. While Seiko 5 has ordinary automatic movement the GS has a spring drive which is a hybrid between quartz-mechanical/automatic movement that basically overcomes mechanic/automatic watch accuracy problem (gives it a quartz watch accuracy which is INSANE) and YET it still has the most clean second hand sweep in the history of horology. That is the difference that 6 850$ gets you...
Normally, yes. But this specific GS is no spring drive

@@sebastiankraus9131I paid £40 for my 5 back in 2016 haha. Crazy to see how much people are happy to pay for them now!
You got screwed.
The newer Seiko 5's are a lot more expensive than the one shown in the video. Back then, Seiko 5's costed less than 100 euro/dollar new, nowadays they are at least 300 euro/dollar and are now called Seiko 5 Sports.
You can't compare a entry level seiko 5 to a hand crafted grand seiko... but I'll take the SNXS79 any day over an over priced watch.
That Grand Seiko is absolutely not hand crafted, what are you talking about?
@@kresimirpleic all gs are handcrafted to a certain degree. Movements, polishing, etc.
@@SadatKR GS movements are machine made and mass produced. They are absolutely not hand crafted. Tin plate polishing (Sallaz or Zaratsu as they pronounce it) does not make a watch hand crafted. Do you people know how rare hand crafted watches are?
@@kresimirpleic GS movemenets are hand assembled.
@@SadatKR You have no idea what you're talking about. You started off with hand crafted and now you're already at hand assembled. GS is a mass produced luxury watch. They feature machine made movements that are also machine decorated. There is literally nothing special about GS that would set them apart from other mass produced luxury brands. Apart from their marketing department, which is the best in the business. GS is not high horology, forget about hand crafted watches.
Watch vs Jewellery
They’re both superb for their own reasons. The Seiko 5 is insanely good value. The GS has nothing to do with value, and everything to do with hand crafted artistry, spring drives, amazing complications… why are people here trash talking either of them?
Maybe saying it has no loom is misleading. Sometimes the hands and indices have a sheen so that any light, even moonlight, can be caught. This way, you can see the hands with even that little bit of reflection. Honestly, I wish more watches did this. I have a Seiko I got in a pawnshop, and it does this. It is the 7N32-0B00.
This. I have 2 Grand Seikos and what you say is true. The dial hands and markers reflect everything.
In the dark means no light. So what do you do on a cloudy night? When the moon is a new moon? Watches have lume for a reason.
@@bigdreams5554 You’re saying I don’t know that reason?
Dress watches often have no lume. Otherwise you need big indices.
The Grand Seiko is mesmerising! I got it too! It’s better than any Rolex Datejust you can buy 😌😌😌
Seiko 5 for every day at the office.
Grand seiko for formal events. Springdrive is awesome to behold. Buttery smooth movement. No loom means hands highly reflective even in little light.
Spring drive my man! Don’t forget about the spring drive movement.
This particular one is automatic, not spring drive. But they still make some of the tightest, most efficient mechanical movements money can buy.
Even their quartz movements have more separate parts than most mechanical movements, are made entirely in-house down to the screws, and are accurate within like 5 seconds per year and thermoregulated lol there's no bad grand seiko
The gs skyflake is the best watch ever with its springdrive movement and beautiful look
Seiko GS is the best. Perfection in their line-up. Also at an angle the dials looks like it has a mountain range as an image.
Missed the boat on skx, wanted a 7s-26 movement, bought a seiko 5 snke, love it.
The dials on all GS are mesmerising……I’m seriously considering getting one, the cherry blossom or snow flake maybe. ❤
I have the seiko 5 with Arabic dials. I’m in love with this watch. Maybe when I win the lottery I’ll get a grand seiko
Grand Seiko is the best watch on the planet.
by far... perfection!
Agree 100%
Objectively not but they’re pretty great nonetheless
Lmao no
Grand Seiko is nowhere near being the best watch on the planet. What a silly statement!
That GS is the newest on my wishlist. Love that cloud/river dial. Even at 37mm, I would rock it on my Swiss wrist.
Seikos are good “for the price” they work, they’re reliable and they look decent. It’s like buying a Toyota or a rolls Royce. Both cars but that’s where the similarities end.
That GS is gorgeous!
Both watches are nice but what it comes down to is the movements inside the watch, the hours of craftsmanship, materials, and the brand’s history/status.
I like Seiko a lot . I bought a Presage 140th anaversary 300 meter professional and its beautiful however the lume is far behind my Tag Professional 300 GMT. But I really dig both.
Thanks for the up load . A far better movie than I thought it was going to be .
I dunno... I love my $150 Seiko 5 (made in Japan model).. it's a great little watch, and keeps great time averaging +/- 2 s/d. What more could I want to justify the huge difference in price?
Have that same seiko 5 in blue, swap the bracelet out to a decent jubilee (20-40$) and it will look better than the rolex OP. No better value in market rn, and due to them being discontinued and replaced by a 400$ remaster, you better be quick.
The Seiko 5 is something I could wear and enjoy. The Grand Seiko is something I'd worry about & wouldn't dare to wear.
i love sunray grey dials. i have the spb143 and sje093 they’re my favorite.
Beautiful watch you are wearing in the video. What is it?
The movement in the Grand Seiko is also waaay more accurate, has a smoother sweep, and a longer power reserve. Plus it was probably handmade by an artist, if that's something you care about. They're both great depending on your interests and budget.
The Seiko 5 is my most accurate mechanical watch. And I got it for only $100. I'm satisfied lmao
Accuracy and seiko 5 do not go together.
Nice review, is it Seiko 5 good for big wrist/hands ?
Depends on what you're comfortable with, but both watches shown here are 37mm. That's considered "midsize" these days, or potentially even small, but with such classic styling I think it'll work on any wrist honestly.
Ill take both. Beautifully simple
Seiko 5 because I wouldn't be scared to wear it.
Why be afraid to wear the GS? There's not really any elevated risk of theft because nobody will recognize it for what it is. My go-to 'lazy' watch is a GS quartz for when I don't feel like winding and setting an automatic.
@@Sporkmaker5150 Damage! All my watches have dings and scratches on them because they're 'working watches.' I'd be mortified if I damaged a Grand Seiko. There's no need for one anyway other than vanity.
@@johntate5050...Watches are made to be worn and they all will show signs of wear after awhile
@@johntate5050I’d prefer more scratches that shows I actually wears that watch , to me it tells a story of me
You can easily see the GS in low light because the finish is perfect on the indices.
The fact that I prefer the simple, clean, crisp look of the cheap Seiko as opposed to the overly busy Grand Seiko makes me thankful I don't have "Expensive taste".
Yes it looks generic, but I far prefer the clean and crisp over the needlessly busy look.
I have the Snowflake. It is my favorite watch and I have some expensive watches.
Can you show us all your collection of watches you are really very inspiring
The Seiko 5(and the GMT) are fantastic watches. Especially for the price. Grand Seiko are all really good for the prices too but i would almost advise to never buy one new. Used ones are like half the price and honestly while they are beautiful they have the same problem as all luxury watches in that they arent worth the money if you dont have a thing for being able to perfectly look at every detail of them.
If you want a walking around watch, get a seiko 5, if you want to show off a suit watch in a board room, get the grand seiko.
The movement is the difference gs also usually has some of the nicest fine art on that movement
Or you can go for the Seiko 6N52-00A0, is almost the same Grand Seiko but under 200 dollars. For me it just does not make any sense buying a Grand Seiko...
Honestly, I like the 5 better. While I can appreciate the GS dial as a neat thing to look at once, it doesn't feel like something I'd want to wear on a regular basis. The only thing about it I prefer is the hand set, and that sure as hell ain't worth nearly 7 grand.
True that, Seiko announced a presage "classic" series, looks beautiful but it is probably closer to the Seiko 5 in price which might be something I would be more comfortable wearing more often.
@@ArtyMcMuffin Just copied from the announcement: " The three new Seiko Presage Classic Series references have a retail of $950 and will be available beginning in June."
Doesn't sound very close to the 5 to me.
@@dustinhertel7261 thanks, good to know. Closer to the 5 than the GS but still...
@@ArtyMcMuffin Ah. It sounded like you were saying they were closer to the 5 than the previous Presage releases (which are about 1/3 of that price).
I own and love both.
The difference is the spring drive movement.
Dude!!! Care to mention the spring drive in GS?
I don't think that watch has a spring drive movement
Great video
What I like about Seiko is the fact that for under 200 dollars you can have a reliable, accurate, automatic watch. I threw out my herd of cheap Timex quartz watches when the batteries gave out.
This watch will run for the rest of my days
As an owner of that seiko 5 snxs79 i would not spend 6k on a grand seiko but by a speedmaster
I own a speedmaster and seamaster, and I'd choose grand seiko any day.
@salhudson6497 I own a snowflake and speedmaster and snowflake details are crazy. If you try a snowflake next to something like rolex op, you can tell the GS is better.
Comparable. The other is a day date rolex but with cheaper materials but gives same time abit inaccurate than a quarts watch which is so far the most closest movement near to atomic clock. The GS comes close to the quarts accuracy but adds 6000$ more to it. Who cares as long as it makes you happy it is what matters. I rock 50 seikos on rotation to avoid paying single GS or rolex plus I use the change and now I own a 🏡 is just the bonus. Lols My house is also hand built
Both are great, but the GS is a different beast altogether. Movement!!
Don’t forget the Shunbun is a titanium case which is more expensive than stainless steel and the movement is far more accurate (+/- 1 second per day)
The Grand Seiko is a great buy, but this is an unfair comparison. The SNXS79 is the epitome of the every day watch, I'd argue that it wears better than most watches within $500-700. I have an SNX799 and I always get compliments on it. Seiko took the design from Rolex and made the best "beater" mechanical self-winding watch in history. The SRPK87 btw is the continuation of the SNXS.
Both awesome watches. I love my GS.
Great vid. TBH, I'll have a lumed watch any day over one without lume. While GS may think that their Zaratsu can make their watch legible in low light... it can't do anything in no light though. 😢 Much like a diamond can be beautiful - but still cannot be seen in the dark, can it?
This watch was bought fifty-five years ago, but I did not see a sample of it anywhere, and I did not see a sample of it in the collection. Can you explain about it?
For the price the Seiko 5, obviously. But for $200 or under I’d rather have a Casio Edifice with a quartz movement and better accuracy than the GS. Citizen, Tissot, Bulova, Casio, are all better with a quartz movement in my opinion than what you’re getting in a GS Automatic. Casio Oceanus S100 would be my pick over the GS.
For me huge difference between those watches is in movements. Other is a cosmetic.
Yeah sure there is a difference, but is it worth the extra money? And this is someone saying owning both Grand Seikos limited editions and high end seikos
Well, from what you've told me, the difference is in the adjectives used to describe them.
Grand Seiko is a God-tier-level and a must for all watch enthusiasts with money like that who earned the right to wear this beautiful timepiece because of hard work. As a below-average lazy person like ME who has not yet earned the right to wear GS, I'll take the beautiful Seiko 5 for $150, invest the $6,850 & enjoy a nice, memorable vacation in Southeast Asian countries for an affordable trip wearing my Seiko 5. Even if it got stolen or lost, I would be ok to get another 😉. Plus, I would have some leftover money to buy more Seiko 5 or Casio digital retro watches like a Casio Royale, F91W, A158WA, A168WA & more.
The difference is that you pay more money just to have the word grand in front of Seiko in the dial.
The dial, the polish, and the bracelet looks better connected/built
Hands-down!! Seiko 5 is a much better looking watch and conforms to the old adage, less is more.
Seiko 5. Paying thousands for a watch that you only need to tell you the time of day is crazy but if I was rich and had nothing better to do with my cash I’d probably buy the GS as well
Hey man, I don't care what you see on the websites, but that's just a black dial on the Seiko 5. Not anything like a sunburst colour scheme 😅
Nothing beats 5 for its value
One is a tool, the other is art.
The Seiko 5 is a rite of passage for watch enthusiasts. It’s great for the price. But the closer you look at watches the more you understand the value of more expensive ones. And once you start buying better watches you quickly get annoyed with the shortcomings of entry level ones. The GS is in another galaxy from the Seiko 5.
It's not all about Dial difference the caliber 97 spring drive and 7s26 is also a huge difference
Toyota or Lexus? Seiko or Grand Seiko? All differences and similarities aside, doesn’t it come down to value vs. vanity?
The Lexus compared with a Toyota … no … Lexus IS a really nice car…compared with a good car but more a workers car. The grand seiko compared to seiko 5 is less different but 40 to 50 times the price. Whereas the Lexus very nice car but is not 50 times the price of a Toyota.
Seiko misled me in the 90’s with my nice looking titanium kinetic watch that never needs a battery, but every 5-7 years needs a new capacitor for $80.00 to $100.00 including shipping. Never again will I spend a lot of money on a Seiko.
The dial aside… The Hi-Beat movement of the GS is mechanical perfection, with gorgeous craftsmanship. They’re a bargain for the price. He should’ve shown the exhibition case back…
Get a Seiko 5 with the 4R36 movement and you'll pay a bit more and have crown winding and hacking.
The DressKX is nice!
“Which do you think is better for the price?” Proceeds to compare a scooter to a Porsche 911.
You and 7 others evidently fail to comprehend the very basic question. 😂
I would more compare this as an old Toyota Corolla to a Porsche 911
Both are cars that take you from point A to point B
Both watches tell you the time (because let’s be honest; watches are a luxury items we indulge in but at the end of the day their main function is to tell time lol)
For the price: a used solid reliable car that I use to commute to work makes more sense
Just like for the price, a solid Seiko 5 that looks good, has lume, mechanical and reliable makes sense
Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion.
@@MusicNTempo Corolla & Seiko 5 get my vote.
The Difference is the price and movement.

Does anyone know the reference number for the Seiko 5 ? Thank you.
SNXS79K1
GS is better value
Chronometer grade
Case is more refined
Bracelet is more refined
Can be argued its better than a Rolex
Seiko 5 great beater and bang for buck but if I was given choice GS every time
Seiko five for the win😮
The only way it wins is its the only watch in the race
Which one tell the better time ?
I don't think a short really does justice to the differences between these watches.
The GS isn't 30 times the price just because it's more beautiful - but also because of the extra build quality and effort and time that go into it. Of course, you can't go into all that in 30 sec, but it's a shame.
The difference: the Seiko 5 is 100% made in China/Malaysia, etc., lacks any strictest production and quality control. It's a mass product.
Grand Seiko is 100% made in Japan, from the single screw up to the watch case, it has to pass strictest manual quality checks during the entire production process.
And it is manually assembled by Seiko's best watchmakers.
The 2 watches cannot be compared.
Those who can afford to buy Grand Seikos do not need lumed dials and hands....
I’ll get the 5 well it is made by the same company, to say is comparing a Chevrolet with a Cadillac or a Ford with a Lincoln.
The only thing I don't like taht much on grand seikos is the font in the date window
Anybody who’s owned a GS knows that the lume is not a concern due to how the indices and hands reflect the light back.
I've noticed that even GS uses the same marketing tactics as Seiko by purposely not making a "perfect" watch. In this case, the best-looking dials on GS usually don't come with a spring drive.
they both are reliable and tell the time. The difference is...price.
Aren’t theyshould have different mechanisms?
I prefer the look of the Seiko 5
I love my seiko 5 🔥🔥
Its like school football match and world cup football match.
So basically the seiko 5 is like a C class and the Grand Seiko is the S class Benz. Yet the old “English” G doesn’t do it for me, that’s like what gangsters from the west coast use to tag and put tats on their bodies back in the 90’s.
The difference, besides the hand crafting, is the movement.
GS is out of my league, so i went Orient Star.
Just forgot to mention the movement that is out of this world... Tiny detail..
There’s definitely some diminishing returns when you go up in price with watches
