    What is Hemifacial Spasm?
Many patients describe it as Face twitching, Face vibrations, cheek twitching, cheek vibrations, eye vibrations, face pulled to one side, involuntary movement of face, eye closing automatically etc What happens in Hemifacial spasm? Typically, Hemifacial spasm affects one side of the face. It begins with eye twitching, then cheek twitching, then mouth twitching, and entire face pulled to same side. These face twitchings or face vibrations or eye vibrations, cheek vibrations are brought on when these patients are in front of other people, or need to speak in front of others. This leads to anxiety, and anxiety increases the Hemifacial Spasm.
Does Hemifacial Spasm affect day to day life?
Most certainly. Patients are embarrassed to meet others, are misunderstood, cannot go out in society, find it difficult to read for long periods of time, cannot watch TV continuously, can become depressed, cannot sleep well, can become irritable. Personality changes occur and they lose confidence in life.
    How is Hemifacial Spasm treated?
The only possible permanent cure is by Microvascular Decompression surgery. Medicines do not work. Botox injections actually cause paralysis of underlying face muscles where they are injected, so the spasms are not that apparent. But they do not treat the original cause of the Hemifacial spasm. MicroVascular Decompression Surgery is the only permanent solution for this. Botox injection is helpful if the patient is very old, not fit for surgery or cannot undergo surgery for the next few months.
    What is Microvascular Decompression?
In this surgery a Teflon piece is inserted between the blood vessel (which causes compression) and the Facial Nerve. MicroVascular Decompression surgery for treating Hemifacial spasm is most effective when patient seeks treatment early and preferably before Botox injections. Hemifacial spasm can be permanently cured by Microvascular Decompression in a very large number of patients. It is a delicate surgery done using a very high resolution microscope.
