Welcome to dizzy studios, we definitely should put a warning and for that we apologize
Slavery was legal since the dawn of time when Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and the British Empire FORCED slavery onto the colonies. Pennsylvania and Rhode Island both voted to end slavery and King George III PERSONALLY wrote back that they had no authority to and reinstated slavery there. Plus slavery during the Founding Fathers days was dying out and was expected to until the invention of the Cotton Gin caused it to explode in the South. Also Georgia and the Carolinas THREATENED to leave the Union during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 if they outlawed slavery in the Constitution. A new, weak nation couldn’t have survived with three big states leaving like that.

Jefferson had a better and more consistent flow, but Douglas had way more punches.
"You let freedom ring but never picked up the phone" is a killer. Jefferson never had a counter for that and went on the defense.
The Jefferson battle is the best litmus test. Frederick Douglass brought nothing to be battle except calling Jefferson racist. People going nuts over it are always the ones not actually paying attention to the lyrics.
I mean, it's a very good point to hammer home, and Douglass does it *exceptionally* well in the first verse, which remains one of the best of the season, if not the series. The real problem with the battle is Jefferson's total lack of a second verse, which really takes it from less of a battle to more of an execution... Which is why it ultimately falls a bit flat as a video, despite being filled with great lyrics.
