I saw Lou at a comic con in the late 90's. He was at a booth in a random corner, and no one was at it. I got up the nerve to go over to him. I told him about my Dad and how we loved watching The Incredible Hulk together. He was So kind and nice. The conversation switched to weight lifting . Being a 20 year old bean pole, I was dismissive of lifting weights. He told me to start small and don't set unrealistic goals. I thought about that conversation that night and bought my first bench and weights. That man changed my life. Thx Lou.

Dr. Mike is getting really creative with placing sponsored stuff in the video. Did not see the Versa Grip coming and did not mind it while it was there. Well played, sir. Also, it's always great to see Dr. Mike pleased with a subject instead of enraged by bad technique.
I grew up watching the incredible hulk with Lou Ferrigno. As a lil skinny kid living in BFE I was blown away at the size of him. Over the years I have seen videos of interviews with his dad, him talking about being bullied because of hearing loss, I don't believe I've ever come across anything showing him being anything other then polite and fairly humble. He may not be the biggest or best bodybuilder ever, but I'd say he's done a helluva job at winning at life and he deserves all the good things that come his way.
I was explaining something like this to my girlfriend. We have basically known everything needed to understand how to get in incredible physical shape for decades. We are still learning a little bit but once you know the basics it's just getting in the gym not eating to self abuse and doing that over long periods of time.

I think I'm realizing that Dr. Mike is really great to watch, not only because he has an incredibly solid range of knowledge and applies pragmatic wisdom constantly, but also because it feels like we're being consulted in private by a Jewish mafia don xD Don Mike, thank you as always for your impeccable analysis. I never heard more praise for any bodybuilder than I did for Lou, he was like MF Doom, he was your favorite bodybuilder's favorite bodybuilder.
I was listening to Jay Cutler talk about dumbbell pullovers and he referenced your hand grip. For back have a close hand grip, like you're pulling a rope. For chest have a spread hand grip, like you're pushing the weight. I still find back easier though, and need to really focus on the mind/muscle connection for chest.
Lou Ferrigno was a BEAST and a really smart dude. His limiting factor was that he was just TOO tall for bodybuilding and its an absolute shame. BTW just like weight classes in MMA I think there should be HEIGHT classes in pro Bodybuilding. You can't get a 6'4 guy to EVER have the muscle pop of a dude that is 5'9. The longer a muscle is the less impressive it looks on stage. I do pullovers A LOT. Been in my routines for at least 5 years straight. It is a compound lift for me. Never a main event. So Its getting another set in for pecs, lats AND triceps without adding 3 exercises to my routine. I feel like the pullover is like the deadlift for the upper body. It gets a lot of muscles involved.
@@rovan8348 haha I think your right, Mike could talk about CGI Hulk's genetic potential and take him through a workout where he uses less weight than he normally does
I saw him at my local Five Guys last night. I love him. I grew up watching The Incredible Hulk and he was amazing! My favorite thing to watch, Hands Down, are the World's Strongest Man Competitions! He was always one of the best competitors that I remember watching on reruns as a kid. I love this video... Funny and informative. He was so advanced in his techniques. Interesting though that in the beginning when you say what he has been in and his name multiple times, no mention of his multiple Mr. Universe titles or his Mr. Olympia title.. I feel like a spokesperson... THANK YOU for the video! You are no slouch - good sir! DAMN!
What a great episode! He was always a favorite of my friends and I since as kids in the 70’s and 80’s trying to be athletic and “built”. Big Louie’s frame, slightly underrated (IMO) muscular development, and life story made it impossible for us NOT to wish good results no matter what he does. I was lucky enough to meet Lou at a Mr. Olympia expo in Vegas, and though he was super busy with people around him, he was patient and talked with me a bit. His challenge with hearing made it difficult for some to understand his direct and serious tone. He is nice than some realize. I figured he was probably serious about getting the science right, but it was extra satisfying hearing the good doctor endorse it. And doc! 120 pound dumbbells for 20 and you’re not a giant dude?! Impressive sir. Whether the weight doesn’t matter or not (I was listening LOL).
Lou is one of my favorite bodybuilders. His size and symmetry are insane steroids or not. Takes a lot of work to get that big in contest shape and he was terrifying to me as a kid in the nbc hulk reunion movies

I was a kid In the 70s. I really believe Lou was thought to be disabled and or low functioning , which is absolutely not true. In fact he heroically pushed himself to become a top bodybuilder despite his hearing problem and public perception. The film Pumping iron also didn't present him in a favorable light. Very sad because he should have dominated bodybuilding throughout the late 70s and early 80s. I imagine though he made way more money playing the Hulk. His 1990s come back at almost 300 lbs featuring fantastic muscle maturity and a flat waist had to be the greatest comeback in the history of bodybuilding.
Lou is also deaf. Ferrigno attributes his profound hearing loss to a series of ear infections he suffered in his infancy that resulted in nearly 80 percent hearing loss, diagnosed at three years old. Since 2012, he has improved his hearing via a fully implanted cochlear stimulator.
Lou F. scared me shitless as the Hulk. I remember hiding behind a couch as a kid as my brothers watched the transformation into the Hulk. Looking back, he was in some strongman competitions as well. The guy can do anything.
If you remember "Pumping Iron" you might remember a scene when Lou is doing shoulder presses with his dad? I think his dad asked him if he wanted more weight on the barbell. And Lou yells and vis voice goes really high pitched. I think he said "MORE WEIGHT! GONNA BEAT'EM!" Talking about Schwarzenegger. My friends and I used to yell that at each other all the time.
This was def the best review to date, Dr Mike didnt disagree or have to correct anything he did or said once! Really cool, would love to see some more lou workout reviews! Mayve even his parts in pumping iron!

I did take your videos on hip thrusts and tweaked my program, and have less hip and back pain, I switched to doing single leg glute bridges for mind-muscle connection, and doing very slow deep bulgarian squats and that's been great so far.
@@KateWandless His best Mr Olympia placements were in the 70s, whereas in the 90s he placed 12th and 13th. Unless the competition improved that much more since the 70s. His prime was more in the late 70s (and probably 80s if he was still competing).

Dude killed it as The Hulk and his role on The King of Queens. 🔥🔥🙏🙏
After watching your videos and having the rp hypertrophy... I'm finally getting gains in the late 40s without getting injured like I used to. Great info always
Lou Ferrigno critiques exercise scientists head shape 🗿
💀
Nooooo 😂
Like a devil who's been de-horned
Dr. Mike is getting really creative with placing sponsored stuff in the video. Did not see the Versa Grip coming and did not mind it while it was there. Well played, sir.
Also, it's always great to see Dr. Mike pleased with a subject instead of enraged by bad technique.
THE HULK HAS HIT THE BUILDING! Hearing Lou Ferrigno is slept on leave Dr Mikes mouth is the most gratifying thing I've received from this channel.
Depends on who this "We" is.
Because technically someone always predicts the future.
It just takes time for the research to disprove all the others.
@@JdotCarver "We" meaning humanity has the information available. And yes I know and agree there's a lot of disinformation.
But people who seek the information it's there.
It's not like cold fusion where no one knows how to make it work.
That Versa Grip advertisement was next level, Dr. Mike. NEXT LEVEL. So ingenious. THAT is how you sell an ad!!!!
Versa grips..how r they different to the gymnastic aids they use?
@@nikitaw1982 the versagrip is 45 dollars more expensive
Insane glazing
All I want in life. Are Lou Ferrigno's pants.
I mean... to buy a pair of those pants.
A new pair.
Same. If I find them, I'll let you know 😂
I believe one third of your comment. The first third. Not convinced you’re looking for a clean new pair
@@11jerans You can't prove that
@@ElinMai I looked and couldn't find a matching pair; if you can, send the link immediately.
Beetlejuice pants 😂
Not only are your videos educational, you’re always funny and down to earth. Keep up the great work.
He was also one of the best looking Hercules portrayals, to this day!
Who was stronger his Hercules or his hulk?
As a physical therapist and athletic trainer I have to agree with you on Lou being very wise/intelligent. I wish I had of done that in my younger years bc I wound up with one shoulder injury, three knee injuries and eventually a torn pectoral muscle. So hence what led me into the field I’m in. I tell all my student athletes your only competitor in the gym is yourself.
Re: 3:30. I know that a little self deprecation is part of the humor for the channel, but I just wanted to say that when you spend your life and career around the top 1% of the 1%, it can give you a warped view of your own body. You've worked hard for years and built a very impressive physique, and I'm sure most people would agree.
well said. surprised no one else is really commenting on that part from what i can see
I think I'm realizing that Dr.

Lou is my Favorite Bodybuilder because of what he dose outside the gym ! He is a Good man and dose good for the community!
The time you take to make the ad reads entertaining is greatly appreciated
He was way ahead of his time.
Lou is giving advice light years ahead of its time...that ppl still ignore
Here is the real question, would Lou Ferrigno have benefited from the RP Hypertrophy app? jokes on you, he is the RP Hypertrphy app!!
This was a great episode, I'd love to see more of Lou and Mike
Don’t blink at me like that Mike… (don’t stop I’m almost there)
hearing the intro music to this segment just makes me so happy
I was listening to Jay Cutler talk about dumbbell pullovers and he referenced your hand grip. For back have a close hand grip, like you're pulling a rope. For chest have a spread hand grip, like you're pushing the weight. I still find back easier though, and need to really focus on the mind/muscle connection for chest.
One of the very few channels where I look forward to the ads haha. Outstanding job guys!
Lou is the Man. Nothing but respect for him.
Exercise Scientist critiques the Hulk next
Didn’t he do that in this video?
@@tieiatalks I meant the CGI Hulk....like doing the Hulk Smash, and throwing around Loki
@FitOneswithVarun sounds more like a Mitch Hooper video, feels more like strongman territory than bodybuilding
@@rovan8348 haha I think your right, Mike could talk about CGI Hulk's genetic potential and take him through a workout where he uses less weight than he normally does
@@FitOneswithVarun "Hulk, instead of throwing that semi-truck, maybe instead throw 2 or 3 suv's, and REALLY feel that stretch before you let them go."
DAMN!
Dr. Mike co-signing your gym advice is like Gordon Ramsey calling your food delicious.
I was just introduced to your work thanks to the podcast you did with Steven Bartlett -- thank you for such a wonderful interview! At the end you mentioned you would love to talk about body dysmorphia, so I wanted to write and ask if you would consider making a video on this subject. As a professional ballet dancer, I am only just now really realizing that I've dealt with body dysmorphia since I was very young. I would love learn your thoughts on the subject. Thanks for doing what you do!
Never really been into the gym stuff but I ended up on deaths door after a severe blood infection and a 5ft 10” guy became 69kgs! With clothes on and soaking wet!
I’ve joined myself a gym and watch RP religiously.
This is gonna suuuuuck getting myself into some semblance of “jacked”. Lol.
Big fan of the Channel Dr Mike and Scott the video guy. (Keep up the phenomenal work) all the best from Scotland guys. 🏴

so refreshing dude... waiting so long for a rad dude to be so self-deprecating and so rad. You rule. Gratitude.
2:22 Hulk's pants are Incredible 😂
It’s easy to tear a person down and be entertaining. It’s harder to be uplifting and informative and still be as entertaining. Dr Mike has the UA-cam thing down
I literally had a dream the other night with Dr Mike in it. He was teaching the basics of hypertrophy to elementary school kids… and that’s when I knew it was all just a dream
He's like me talking to my 6 year old daughter about why she should learn how to do proper push-ups NOW instead of when she's much older
@user-mn9wc5ru5w Hell yeah
We used to chant “AwNOLD!” every shoulder day😅
I remember him struggling on an exercise, his father telling him that it shouldn't be so hard for him, and then Lou telling his dad "YOU DO IT THEN"
This was def the best review to date, Dr Mike didnt disagree or have to correct anything he did or said once! Really cool, would love to see some more lou workout reviews! Mayve even his parts in pumping iron!
The OG Hulk
Mike thats your best video ever. Jokes on point, the versa grips ad was hilarious! laughed so hard the whole video - what a masterpiece! 👏👏👏
Most underrated bodybuilder ever
Yeah. He was so underrated that he got paid to be the HULK and is a living legend.
One day...one fine day, you humans will understand the meaning of words and how and when to utilize them.
Just because a saying is popular, doesn't mean it applies to every situation in every comment section. It's okay to not be a sheep and fish for likes.
Peace
@@AhtoRashied No need to be rude, he was stating that as a bodybuilder he was underrated of which he was.
Nobody ever mentions Lou, everyone mentions Arnold.
"He was so underrated that he got paid to be the HULK and is a living legend."
Who even then remembers him for being the Hulk and today? Nobody.
But OP was originally speaking about Bodybuilding and the Hulk is a movie which has nothing to do with bodybuilding.
@@AhtoRashied yeah but as in bodybuilding we speak, he is not that often spoken of, as is the case of other legends like Arnold, Ronnie, etc. when people talk about their favorite bodybuilders, Lou is not mentioned that many times
@AhtoNajeebRashied you'll understand one day that it is possible to receive accolades and still be underrated. As long as one feels Lou didn't receive the praise and accolades that one feels he earned, he remains underrated to that person. There is this thing called Google, I suggest you try it out some time and go read the definition of the word to help you understand it better. Hope this helps 🙏
He was too thicc like Mike. Smart like Mike. They should at least date.
I saw Lou at the Philly comic convention in early 2000's...I was yelling at him saying "Hi Lou!" My friend i was there with informed me he was deaf and did not hear me 🤦♂️
Lou Ferrigno and me share so many similarities: 2 legs, 2 arms, 2 ears, 1 head, 1 stomach... we are like twinsies!
unfortunately you don't share as much as you think as you have more ear for ear that him (he's born with a hearing impairment)
I remember when Lou made a comeback at 50. Being a gym kid, had the mag. What an impressive come back, absolute insanity. Still in great shape thanks to so many leaders in the game
20 mins of Dr.Mike simping for another man, dropping knowledge and being funny is why we are here. Love you mike, i found back to the gym, bought me some pink versa gripps and girls are talking to me again
Hi Mike! You give me inspiration with your videos, they are so scientifically interesting!
I did take your videos on hip thrusts and tweaked my program, and have less hip and back pain, I switched to doing single leg glute bridges for mind-muscle connection, and doing very slow deep bulgarian squats and that's been great so far.
Versa Gripps is getting way more than they knew from this sponsorship.
Just bought the versa grips… because you’re the man Mike
Thank you for the amazing content!
I need Dr. Mike to look at Ryan Humiston, feel like that would be an interesting crossover!
They hooked up back in college I heard 🏳️🌈
Fun to see someone way before my time articulating what I'm doing currently. I am on the way! Good episode!
YEEAAAAAAAAAS slept so much on ferrigno, at his prime vs Arnold’s prime I would dare to say he was better condition than Arnold by far
Different drugs in the 90’s mate, was very basic in Arnold’s time
@@KateWandlessLou Ferrigno mostly competed in the 70s. He faced off against Arnold as well during the 70s.
@@ireaditnerd8306 Lou’s prime was the 90’s comeback, he was soft as clarts in the 70’s and Arnold easily beat him
@@KateWandless His best Mr Olympia placements were in the 70s, whereas in the 90s he placed 12th and 13th. Unless the competition improved that much more since the 70s.
