- Pt 2. DIY, POORMAN'S ALOX Victorinox Swiss Army Knife [Alox means metal scales instead of their traditional red cellidor plastic). I make these for my keys and mini survival kit tins . . . . Hmm, BLING vs. Steampunk? I can't decide; I like both!
I realize I'm not the first person to use descaled SAKs but I've never seen anyone polish them.
PART 1 of this video: • Poorman's "ALOX" Swiss...
NOTE: Theoretically the exposed rivets can potentially catch on some key chains/clothing in pocket carry and at least one commenter (Bierz is) claims blades can unexpectedly become deployed. Ouch! In my limited use I found no issues. - Навчання та стиль
Man, did you try to hypnotize people? You succeeded with me. Thank you.
Thanks for all the great comments everyone.
Great idea! I thought that I'd ruined a full dozen SAK Classics in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. I can shine them up, and 12 ultralight gifts have appeared! Thanks!
Man, your videos never disappoint me!
I love the mini version of knives. I have now made it a point to EDC them most of the time. The right ones on the belt, key chain and pocket are perfect! The right size in the right place, preferably.
You need more subs!!! I spent an hour looking for an old Swiss air. Finally found it and taking apart now. I have done so many of your ideas. Thanks so much.
My favorite Gadget you tuber by far
Me too!!!!
Enjoy your videos. Very informative and interesting!
Thank you for another excellent video!
The arrowhead looking tool you asked about it for opening packaging. Formed plastic bologna type packs like for batteries. Drag it down the plastic and it is very effective and much more safe then a straight blade for that task.
Thanks for sharing. Great video.
I didn't know the Vagabond existed. That's a cool model. The Ambassador might be a good one to do this with, as it has a bigger blade and better scissors but is still really skinny.
Genius level, every single video
The Vagabond is my favorite too. As for the year when liners are solid, I am unsure, except I noticed your solid one has a finger nail file that has slanted rows, whereas the newer liners (with hole down the center) have a nail file with bumpy material on it.
Another great video.
Excelente ideia. Parabéns.
That cuticle pusher is NOT used as such by most Victorinox carriers. It has a variety of potential uses. Some call it a pharmacist's spatula. I put a slight edge on mine.
The rule is more a depth gage. Or for determining bolt length. For small jobs. No one thinks of it as a ruler like a 300mm or 12" ruler.
The orange peeler works! Basically, one ought to look at the mix of tools, and sizes, of the many models of Victorinox knives. The buy the one that best fits. Better than buying a model with unwanted tools. Or tools who's useage is not understood. SAKWIKI is freely available, accurate, and lets us all know about tool mix, size, locking blade or not. One-handed opening or not.
Cheers from the Middle East!
Great video,I'm a huge Sak fan myself
Very good video. Thank you!
5:53 you're a god damn genius
I have the midnight manager, with the flashlight n pen, great for spur of the moment needs for alight orpen ,i keep it in my 5th pocket along with alot of other edc gear I keep on me
great hack. might do that to my rambler.
That cut and pick tool looks like it might perform the same function as a similarly designed blade on my Gerber Dime mini multi-tool, which excels at slitting open that rigid clear plastic retail packaging without damaging the contents. Thanks as always for an interesting video!
thanks MeZillch
Did you try an 111 millimeter model without the scales? I wonder if a 4 layer one is a good idea for this...
I have never owned a 111mm Victorinox, sorry. Maybe some day.
@@MeZillch Maybe you could look for a second hand one for your tests.. In my experience, the 3 layer 111 is very comfortable at 18 mm thickness, but another layer with scissors (the Outrider model) would be nice, though those thick scales make it a not so friendly at 22 mm thickness...
this Cuticle Pusher it works fine as pharmaceutical spatula.mixing powder, paste ect.
I hear people use it as a Coke spoon but it must take an awfully long time to drink a bottle of Coke one tiny spoonful at a time!
It can be used to dig out earwax to.
Actually it was designed as a pharma spatula. Many years ago Victorinox made a limited run series of 58mm SAKs for pharmacists, featuring this, and what they call the small ''orange peeler'' (which you'll notice is totally different to the actual orange peeler on the executive) - this was used to extract cotton balls from very small pill phials. Because they had the tooling to make these components in the factory and didn't destroy it or get rid of it, when it came to make the Minichamp it was just decided to put every single 58mm tool they could make on it, which is what they did. They then designated the pharma spatula as a ''cuticle pusher'' although the thought of doing that gives me the shudders lol, and the extractor tool as an orange peeler. People joke that the pharma spatula is good for scooping cocaine and sniffing it but actually that is closer to it's original purpose.
I love the SwissChamp, did a video on it myself. Always excited when there is a new MeZillch video up.
PS....I like the non rectangular slotted version the best.
I am thinking of adding somehow a nail file to my Climber or Huntsman. Since you are very smart and creative person. maybe you have some ideas?
Maybe you could cut an emery board with a razor knife or heavy duty shears into the shape of the white plastic toothpick and substitute it into that slot?
If you are familiar with the nail file of the Victorinox Compact SAK, found on the back edge of the parcel carrying hook, you know that nail files need not be wide.
@@MeZillch it is a good idea about emery board. I should think about it. Actually, I had an idea of buying some metal nail file, cut it and glue it somehow onto either scales or remove scales and glue it onto my knife budy. I mean I didn't mean it to be removable. Also, if it is a Huntsman there should be enough space in between wood saw and scissors. Not sure yet what to do and how
i thought the poor-man's alox was pretty clever but not for me. i didn't think making a "bling" version would actually make it more appealing but as you pointed out [mostly referring to older saks] the mirror finish is actually functional, another essential/tool. and I haven't used the tooth pick for anything other than cleaning my chillum, and the tweezer were for holding small j's. its come in handy on more than one occasion but not enough to justify the bulky scales - considering the alternative you've got here.
EDIT: okay I just saw the hand-drill function of the orange peeler and that is pretty effin cool. you can have a make-shift steady-cam/counter-balance out in the middle of the woods, or even set up surveillance for a one-night site/camp, which is pretty fkn badass, sorry. i always figured just swap the thing with a hacksaw or wood saw but screw that, orange peeler just jumped way up on my favorite's.
So did you know that it is actually the simple dimpled plain SAK that is issued to Swiss army officers rather than the ones with the coloured „scale“? 😉
But isn't having a toothpick close at hand a critical tool for a solder? Ha ha.
@@MeZillch for an officer, certainly!
I thought you had a victorinox vagabond with a pen on it. Do you not carry it on your keychain anymore?
I have a bunch of Vagabonds and rotate what I EDC. Also now that I've discovered the Minichamp has a secret, undocumented screwdriver tip, as I demo at the end of this video, I'm liking the Minichamp more and more. I'm also working on an outboard pen project, BTW, so the pen aspect may no longer be needed making the Poorman's ALOX version fine.
Will the vagabond fit in an altoid tin?
Perfectly? No. It has to be tilted to one side slightly. This series of SAKs are about 58mm long and the interior width of Altoids tins is more like 56mm and change.
I’d cover mine with adhesive Swarovski crystals!
I tried this with the classic and found that the blades came out and opened up, including the scissors, in my pocket. Became dangerous in a pocket on a key chain so I stopped using it :( Beware of this as it can catch you out with some models. MeZillich often puts these into containers so may not have come across this problem. Keep safe :)
In my limited use I have not found this to be an issue with my key chain but as a precaution I have added the following to my notes under the video: NOTE: The exposed rivets can potentially catch on some key chains/clothing in pocket carry and at least one commenter (Bierz is) claims blades can unexpectedly become deployed. Ouch.
How many SAK's do you have?
I'd guess around 30-50. About 90% or more were bought used and lucky for me I don't care much about their looks, just functionality, so I often can get them for a song since most real collectors pass on the ones I pick up for sometimes under $10. They are the number one most confiscated item by the TSA so there are zillions of them sold on ebay.
Try tooth paste then Mother's polish it will shine stainless aluminium
Interesting. Never heard of that.
