Prince and the revolution should easily be on here, I mean the guy could play multiple instruments and was a master guitar player and could also sing, dance and produce! Dude was a Savant!!!!
I'd add The Turtles, The (Young) Rascals, Styx, Buffalo Springfield, Bread, War, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Jr. Walker and The All-Stars and The Everly Brothers (since duos are eligible).
I think I remember you also really liking Sunflower by the beach boys when you reacted on patreon. I think beach boys deserve number 1 😀 another great video Larry
Thievery Corporation is my favorite contemporary band. They're based in Washington, D.C. Not rock, but rather a hybrid of downtempo, chill, dub, bossa nova, and world beat. VERY eclectic, and possibly the best live performance I've ever seen. About a third of their music is instrumental, and they have a dozen or two different singers take turns on the vocal tracks (including Wayne Cramer of The Flaming Lipps, and David Byrne of the Talking Heads).
Tons of great stuff out of the US. Of course my favorites, in no order, are Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Beach Boys, The Avett Brothers, The Grateful Dead, The Wood Brothers, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives and the Byrds.
Not a bad list, I was pleasantly surprised that The Beach Boys are at the top, they have many great and overlooked albums after Pet Sounds! I'd be happier if Sonic Youth and Love were on the list instead of Kiss or Aerosmith. Also a huge Beefheart fan, he deserves to be higher!!!
The Beach Boys surfing music is great. But I think their most interesting period is from Pet Sounds to around the early 70's. There's some music there that approaches the same galaxy as the Beatles.
The word "underrated" is overused, but if there ever was a band that fit that term it would be Little Feat. Founded by two former members of Zappa's Mothers of Invention (Roy Estrada and Lowell George), they may not have had any hit singles, but they deserve way more recognition than they received.
The Doors , The Cars , Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers , Sonic Youth , Beach Boys , R.E.M , Steely Dan , Love , The Pixies & CCR my Top 10. Jefferson Airplane ✈️ & Blondie are my honorable mentions.
Also surprised Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band is not on here. Though the only ones really missing for me are Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young). Maybe they weren't included because Nash is British and Young Canadian??
I think the problem with the E Street Band is that Bruce released most of his stuff just under his own name (except for live albums), so it's more of a solo act than a band act. But what do I know, if they were on the list, they should be pretty high up there.
Only way to justify leaving East Street Band off is by regarding Springsteen as an individual artist with a kickass back up band (like James Brown). Perhaps CSNY, Monkees, Fleetwood Mac, etc would be considered international bands?
Let me just say I was 5 in 1970, and the first album I loved was Chicago 2. Out of 50 bands, I loved 13, only 2 were not mentioned in Kansas and Toto. I didn’t agree with how low their placements were, especially Chicago, Eagles, and Journey.
So many important bands missing, as you and others have stated. At least the Beach Boys are Number One. They influenced so many bands in terms of songwriting, arrangements, and production, even if their vocals didn't influence many groups. But no Grand Funk, Bread, Buffalo Springfield, The Monkees, Three dog Night... Baffling.
The Beach Boys 👍🏽 My favourite American bands are The Doors The Velvet Underground Kiss Dead Kennedys Ministry Nine Inch Nails The Stooges Metallica Megadeth Slayer Cannibal Corpse Guns n Roses Dio Public Enemy 🤷🏻 Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps 😊
I'm with you regarding duos such as Simon & Garfunkel and Hall & Oates. I would create another list for them that would include The Everly Brothers. Also, I am a huge Temptations fan. But I have always regarded them as a vocal group & not a band, because they did not play instruments on stage. And if you include them, then why leave out Motown's biggest group the Supremes? Although "prefab", the Monkees were important. Earth Wind & Fire is a major oversight. These lists tend to be very pop & rock oriented. Thus I did not expect to see any great jazz bands. If you wanted to name lesser known but important bands how about Love, MC5 & Blue Cheer?
Whaaaa?? No Bob Dylan, Prince and the revolution, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Mamas & the Papas, REO Speedwagon??? Who the hell came up with this list?? 😂
Decent list but some missing are BOC and G. Funk! And where in the heck is Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band? VH at #3? Nah. Only Journey record I ever bought was Infinity. Bands I was happy to see; CCR, Allmans n' Skynyrd, T. Petty, Dead, Cars, Byrds, Sly Stone, S. Dan, the Airplane, B. Boys and Chicago. The Crue and G. Roses but no Springsteen? Honorable mention, the Marshall Tucker Band.
The Beach Boys, the doors, and Van Halen are probably my favorite American bands. Apart from some omissions and a few weird inclusions the list wasn’t all that bad. Not sure if I would say good but I wouldn’t call it bad
Duos shouldn't be included IMO. Plenty of bands I'm not into but quite a few I like. I'm happy with Beach Boys, Tom Petty, R.E.M. and Talking Heads being way up there. I'd add Magnetic Fields, Buffalo Springfield and probably Devo ( Still considering Pere Ubu) to the top 50.
Well, if Hall and Oates can be on the list, Simon and Garfunkel can be on it too. Maybe the Everly Brothers should to be on it as well. Odd the Temptations are on there since I see them more as a "group" than a "band". Maybe the Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, the Ronettes, the Four Seasons should be on the list too then? Ha.
I was thinking the Monkees should be on the list although one member was British but doesn't majority rule? lol I can respect the Beach Boys being at the top, but they would not be the top one for me. Blue Oyster Cult and Grand Funk Railroad should be on the list. I mean for Pete's sake the latter did sing "We're and American Band!" With Aerosmith I too love the Seventies version more.
Not too many surprises here Larry. A lot of older acts in here which kept out perhaps some of the newer brigade. Agree with you about S&G/H&O etc. These are good videos - hope they are doing well for you and the channel
Followup: Even though those bands weren't on the list, the list itself turned out to be surprisingly solid (even if I can't stand half of them--Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam. . . .).
America (how Ironic), Three Dog Night, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, The Monkees and the Four Tops are much better than some of those who made the list. I wonder why Grand Funks gets no love?
Amazing how many one can agree with on this list, and how many one can disagree. And no BOC or Fleetwood Mac?!?(can count them as 1/2 American😄) Sacrilege!!
There's some good bands there but also lots of dross. If S & G are included where are the Everlys who influenced so many top bands including the Beatles. Also to have the Doors at 6 but no mention of Love is a complete travesty. (In my opinion)!
No Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band!! A glaring omission. Yet they had Simon & Garfunkel and Hall & Oates. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were rightly included. When I saw Springsteen in 2012 there were 20 band members on stage, and they were all fantastic. Go figure. 🤔
@@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffin yeah but all these "solo artists" had backing bands. I don't know there's kinda a grey area when it comes to lists like this.
Yeah this list is horrible! Lol no Bob Dylan, Prince and the revolution, Bob Seger, Mama's and the Papa's, REO Speedwagon. A lot of legendary bands missing for sure lol

I’m glad to see DH & JO made the list! Celebrating my birthday today. It’s a beautiful day. I’m enjoying these lists, Larry.😊
Happy birthday! Hope you have a very nice day, Mary Ann!
Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!! My birthday is Monday!
@@piscesempress1978 Happy Birthday to you on Monday! 🙂

The White Stripes aren't on here? Now, there's a duo that's definitely a band!
The New York Dolls.

Yeah, The Turtles and Styx, definitely.
Neil Young - 🇨🇦

Larry really needs to check out the Pixies' album _Surfer Rosa._

Yes the Beach Boys were great Larry,I always thought of them as brilliant nerds, they just weren't cool but man their vocals were incredible! Bob
Too be fair if Steely Dan and Hall and Oats are on the list it makes sense Simon and Garfunkel are also included. All three are duos more than a band.

Hi Larry. I am a fan of many of these bands but the ones I have seen live of these were Frank Zappa and the mothers, Santana and Aerosmith

The Tubes, Utopia, Kansas, Jelly Fish
The Beach Boys 👍🏽 My favourite American bands are
The Doors
The Velvet Underground
Kiss
Dead Kennedys
Ministry
Nine Inch Nails
The Stooges
Metallica
Megadeth
Slayer
Cannibal Corpse
Guns n Roses

Public Enemy 🤷🏻
Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps 😊
The Beach Boys are my #1 American band as well. And the Eagles, The Doors, CCR, and Nirvana, to round out my Top 5.

It's sad so many rock artists get destroyed by drugs...thrown away what could have been.
Just thought of another one, where is Pantera?!?!
where the hell are CSNY, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, at????
Sir, maybe it’s because The (original) Jimi Hendrix Experience were two thirds English - that’s Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums.
The Beach Boys, the doors, and Van Halen are probably my favorite American bands. Apart from some omissions and a few weird inclusions the list wasn’t all that bad. Not sure if I would say good but I wouldn’t call it bad

Any list that doesn't include Blue Oyster Cult in the top 20, never mind the top 50 of U.S.A. bands is an insult to intelligence.
Wow no Grand Funk that's a shame. So much for these list. I don't agree with critics often. Another good video Larry tks 😎👍
God loves the Stooges'
Seen stranger lists on your Chanel🙃
I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for leaving Steppenwolf off this list because they probably knew 3 of the members were Canadian!
If DEVO , The Cramps, and The Stray Cats aren't on this list, then it is officially illegitimate.

It’s funny, I always think that Blue Oyster Cult is British.
Yep another incomplete list, like no BOC no Grand Funk, and several others that should be on this on the top 50.
