Hey Larry! What a year! I turned 17 in 1973, so I bought almost all of these (no Lou Reed) as they were released. Hard to argue against this being the best year for rock music. One glaring omission is the Montrose debut. Cheers!
Excuse me, havta hang out with StudMuffin!!😻
Always great hearing your opinion, Larry! Been giving several artists a renewed listen thanks to your recommendations.
Btw would you consider making a new CD collection video where you show all your stuff?
Hi larry my favorite albums from 1973 are : Moontan golden earring, the who quadrophenia, pink floyd dark side of the moon,Queen debute album,Genesis selling england by the pound, yes tales from topographic oceans, Jethro tull a passion play, Led Zeppelin houses of the holy,Black Sabbath Sabbath bloody Sabbath, deep purple who do we think we are, rolling stones goat's head soup, elp brain salad surgery, the kinks preservation act 1 👍✌️
Todd Rundgren that you mentioned with Grand Funk Railroad is a name that comes up everywhere. Much music and done things with many artists. Like here with Grand Funk Railroads maybe most famous album. How is Todd Rundgren not more famous? He is like Quincy Jones of the rock world!
Lovely to see Queen at S-Tier with that album. It seems to me like that album and Queen II get mentioned a lot more today and in recent years than earlier. Before it was all about Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen and Another One Bites The Dust. Now I see Queen and II all over the internet.
Yes, he also produced the very first Sparks album. Todd is a musical genius for sure.
Great tier list Larry! My favorite albums of 1973 are Closing Time by Tom Waits, Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin and Selling England by the Pound by Genesis
1973 was unbelievable and just absolutely loaded with the one legendary album after another. I was only eleven years old then, but it was actually the year that initially woke me up to the edgier side of rock music. And then, I couldn’t have possibly imagined just how musically dynamic and diverse ‘73 really was, until many years later. It seemed as though nearly every band who had already made a name for themselves, put out their finest work. Great tier listing, by the way. Glad to see “ Moontan “ being up in the A tier, and BOC’s Tyranny on the top level. It’s their hardest, rocking album.
Great comprehensive list of 1973 albums. I agree with your Lou Reed Berlin pick. Amazing album that puts you through an emotional ringer, but in a good way! The recording industry was so much better, more creative and more inclusive back in the early to mid 1970s.
Excellent!, definitely one of my favourite years for music. The Dark Side of the Moon is my favourite from 1973, I adore that album! 🙂👍xxx.
Not only was 1973 the greatest year for solo Beatles albums, but also the year that the Red and Blue albums were released.
🥇Dark Side Of The Moon
🥈Band On The Run
🥉Houses Of The Holy
Good list. The ones from your list that I’d have in S are Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Aladdin Sane, Houses of the Holy and The Dark Side of the Moon. I would add Catch a Fire and Burnin’ - Bob Marley and the Wailers, Raw Power - Iggy and the Stooges, and Tanx - T Rex.
You're right, you know.
Love Lou Reed, but could never get into Berlin, until I heard the Live at St Ann theater recording. Obvious S tiers for me are DSOTM and Quadrophenia and the New York Dolls debut which wasn’t on the list. My favorite album of the year is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Great channel! I enjoy these lists
Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells" is another possible S-tier from '73.
S Tier not on your list for me would be The Captain and Me by the Doobie Brothers which is my favorite album of 1973. Other S tier not on your list for me would be Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan, Pronounced…by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Innervisions by Stevie Wonder (as good or better than Songs In the Key of Life IMO), Brothers and Sisters by the Allman Brothers. S tier for me on your list would be Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, Selling England By the Pound by Genesis, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John, Goats Head Soup by The Rolling Stones, Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin.
I would add Manfred Mann's Earth Band "Solar Fire" and "Messin" and Spooky Tooth "Witness", but we must understand that Larry is doing fine videos capturing 90% of the essential rock albums each year which is extraordinary !!!
@@antoniodias4718 Agreed and of course taste and rankings are very personal and subjective. He had me right up until Yoko Ono! 😂 - and a double shot to boot! 😱
amazing video man . i enjoyed watching it
Thank you!
My Top 3
1.Tres Hombres
2. Billion Dollar Babies
3. Goats Head Soup
1 dark side of the moon
2 neil young times fades away
3 franck zappa overnight sensation
4 alice cooper billion dollard babies
5 stevie wonder innervisions
Wow, what a great year of releases! So many excellent albums: Bowie, Floyd, Tull, ELP, Zeppelin, Stones, Cooper, McCartney, Elton…
Another great list Larry!!! I don't agree in some ratings just as I know many people wouldn't agree with mine!! Great job!! keep up with the good work.
Thanks!
OK, Larry! 21 minutes to tell me I should buy Lou Reed's Berlin CD reissue, an album I never bought. In other words, it is a great selection of albums and a very good ranking on your part. If you take the "C" list and put it at the end of the "B" in the same order as you ranked them, this video would be perfect, because 1973 was a great year for rock and (egg) roll. Your hard work really pays off here, "bro."
Also thank you Larry for introducing me to Sparks! So far Moon over Kentucky is my favourite!
Thank you and that is an awesome song for sure!
Ringo is a fabulous record. And the whole 1972/3 Beach Boys era with Ricky and Blondie is probably my second favorite period of theirs, just under Brian's wall of sound years in the mid-60s.
Ouch Larry! Putting Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in anything other than S tier killed my soul😅. I think I could have survived A tier but definitely not B.
My fav from that year is 'Selling England by the Pound'. Great that 'Grand Hotel' is in A-tier. I'm in the minority, but I think 'Goat's Head Soup' is an excellent album.
So good on you for putting Lou Reed's Berlin in S tier. But you missed John Cale's Paris 1919 which I actually think is as good (and similar). And I admire anyone who's prepared to defend Yoko Ono. I can't quite do that.
Quadrophenia & Band On The Run were two of the first albums I received as gifts 🎁 for Christmas 🎄 1973 .. 1985 seemed a long way away 😆 🤣
Great list, only one that I can think of that I love that was not on your list would be the debut album of Montrose.
Montrose was the best
The year before he played with Edgar Winter on They Only Come Out at Night. One of the best albums of 1972. Free Ride, Frankenstein etc.
Love the Montrose album. Still listen to it.
A great list as usual. I come here to see your take on albums. And I agree with you on the vast majority of these. Cheers.
if there's 1 Genesis album in S tier, it should be Selling England By the Pound. For me it's top 5 prog albums of all time. And Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is S tier too. Lots of great songs.
Great list Larry 👍
Appreciate it!
At long last, I've finally found a fellow fan of Queen's first album!
That whole record is criminally underrated. My Fairy King and Great King Rat are two of my all-around favorites from the band's entire discography. Progressive Queen is best Queen IMO
Great list, but "Soundtracks" from Can was not released in 1973, but in 1970. It was their second album, just before "Tago Mago".
"Larks Tongues in Aspic" by King Crimson is missing too. Sorry for being nasty, it doesn't mean a thing, still a great show!! Always!!!
I was recently gifted that CD but have only played it once or twice, so hard to rank. I saw them on their 1974, my very first concert. Golden Earring opened for them.
For me the #1 for me will always be Sabbath Bloody Sabbath my favorite album of all time. I could talk about how amazing it is for a week probably. Seeing all the other albums on this list reminds me how good 1973 was for music.
More high quality entertainment! 😊😊😊😊😊
A Wizard a True Star gets no respect and should be # 1
My Number #1 is Dark Side Of The Moon Number #2 Houses Of The Holy number 3 is Band On The Run
That was ‘Desperado’, not ‘On The Border’ (that’s from ‘74). Anyways, that album has an old west meets Pink Floyd feel to it. Great album (A tier) and probably their best, from an artistic perspective. It’s mostly deep cuts, which means most of it hasn’t been overplayed. ‘Quadrophenia’ (C tier) is an album I consistently struggle with. Talk about a long, boring, and melodically-inept album. ‘Tommy’ was a much more enjoyable rock opera with actual great songs. Controversially, it’s my least favorite of the Keith Moon-era albums. ‘The Who By Numbers’ and ‘Who Are You’ are both underrated and better to me. A or B for ‘Goats Head Soup’, depending on my mood. Side 2 brings it down quite a bit. S tier for ‘Band On The Run’, ‘Houses Of The Holy,’ and ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’. ‘#10’ (B tier) is a really overlooked Guess Who album. A bit more serious and less of the dicking around that filled up much of ‘Rockin’’ and ‘Artificial Paradise’. Always felt like they wasted their talents on so many ‘50s-styled rockers after Randy left.
Shows how much I love The Eagles, ha ha. Thanks.
Larry, So why do you fight that feeling in your heart?
For anyone saying Lou Reed isn't a great vocalist, listen to The Bed.
Yes Top Oceans an "S" tier? Whoa. Me personally, I'd make a special "F" tier just for this Yes disaster!
S for me. The Ancient is fantastic. My desert island Yes album.
An album not on your list (which is definitely not "classic rock") in my opinion the greatest 1973 release..."Spectrum", Billy Cobham's amazing debut!!!
jazz from queen from 1979 not1973
No idea what you are talking about. I ranked the debut album Queen which is from 1973...
