One fact about the LOW album by David Bowie is that when Bowie played it in full live long after it came out he always said LOW was a 1976 album as it was suppose to come out in 76 but the record company said no and did not want to realese it but finally did tho in early 1977
Good day Larry, tks for today's show. Some interesting choices and I appreciate that our tastes and rankings are fluid and very personalised . I am enjoying this format. Cheers Brian
Pretty good selection considering this is the time when disco started taking over. But there was still a lot of good rock music out there. Looking forward to the next one, Larry.😊
Love you being ranked was a welcome surprise. I remember a little while back when you had a poll between that and 15 bigs ones to be included on the does this album suck series lol
Pleasant video. The S tiers for me are: Let There Be Rock (Aust ver - which is the one you had for the list) Animals Never Mind the Bollocks The Clash Heroes and Low Love Gun Three more for the list are Sin After Sin - Judas Priest, Exodus - Bob Marley and Legalize It - Peter Tosh.
Top 10 from the albums on your list but it's my list. So many lists Larry! 10. Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel 9. UFO - Lights Out 8. Queen - News of the World 7. David Bowie - Low 6. Blue Öyster Cult - Spectres 5. Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever 4. Billy Joel - The Stranger 3. AC/DC - Let There Be Rock 2. Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood 1. Pink Floyd - Animals
Like you, I was alive and buying records in 1977, but I couldn't name 50 albums I bought that year, let alone rank them. So, a tip o' the hat on a job well done, that I'm sure took some effort.
My 77 top 10 (in no particular order): Jam-In the City, Vibrators-Pure Mania, Ramones-Rocket to Russian & Leave Home, Clash, Sex Pistols-Never Mind the Bollocks, Eddie & Hot Rods-Teenage Depression, Dead Boys-Young Loud & Snotty, Dave Edmunds Get It, Runnaways-Waitin' For the Night. Best year for music since the 60s.
Hi Larry the Rough Mix album was a favorite of mine back then it was a very good one. Kiss at the time I didn't like them they looked ridiculous Now they are one of my favorite bands I haven't heard an album I don't like by them yet. I have quite a few of them.
Very strong showing for Love You. I know those Pete Townshend albums were just reissued on vinyl, I'm a big fan of anything he's done. Those early Ramones albums are so good!
My 1977 S Tier List: 15 - Weather Report - Heavy Weather 14 - Jackson Browne - Running on Empty 13 - Ian Dury - New Boots and Panties!! 12 - Iggy Pop - Lust for Life 11 - Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77 10 - Steve Miller - Book of Dreams 9 - Billy Joel - The Stranger 8 - Eric Clapton - Slowhand 7 - The Alan Parsons Project - I Robot 6 - Yes - Going for the One 5 - Supertramp - Even In the Quietest Moments 4 - Steely Dan - Aja 3 - Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (Debut solo aka “1” aka “car”) 2 - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors 1 - Pink Floyd - Animals (Their best album IMO)
Wow, this year is probably where we disagree the most. Marquee Moon is the top S tier album of the year for me, along with Animals and Songs From the Wood. I agree with you on Pink Flag and Clash debut, both S tier. I enjoy these lists!
I'd put Nugent and Styx in "D" and Townshend/Lane Tough Mix and Yes' Going For The One in "A." I would add Grateful Dead's Terrapin Station to your list and put it in the "A" also. Terrapin is a somewhat slick progressive-rock album produced by Keith Olsen. Olsen produced Fleetwood Mac's eponymous 1975 album. Outside of that, 1977 was a great year for rock music in my opinion and you did an excellent job of ranking your selection of albums released in 1977 that you like.
Off the top of my head, three more 1977 albums I could recommend.. Diamantina Cocktail by Little River Band, ABBA The Album and I Robot by The Alan Parsons Project.
My top 5 albums from 1977: 5. The Clash - The Clash 4. Out of the Blue - E.L.O. 3. News of the World - Queen 2. Low - David Bowie 1. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac An album that isn't on this list, that would be in S Tier for me is Aja by Steely Dan 👍xxx.
The early Stranglers albums really deserve a good relistening. The sound is unique thanks to their deceased keyboardist Dave Greenfield. I love the Stranglers much more now than in the 80's. Their style can be quite brutal even thrash but extreme;ly good music. I wish I had bought more of their albums when they were released. Meanwhile I stream.
1977 was such a good year for new music. I would add The Jam’s debut, In The City, to my own personal “S” tier. The Modern World, also from 77, would be a “B” tier. And yes, Wire’s Pink Flag is most definitely better than Elvis Costello. 😁 Surprisingly, 77 was a poor year for Beatles fans, with no Lennon, McCartney, or Harrison albums. All we got was Ringo the 4th… “D” tier.
fleetwood mac rumors was huge and lynyrd skynyrd street survivors . kiss love gun album . 1977 was a good time l was in 8th grade. its when l got my first job.
Another Good ranking video. Introducing Sparks is a great album. Don't know why it is considered meduocre by so many people. And dig this. I still have copies of Propaganda and Insiscreet on 8 Track tape.
Songs From The Wood would be an S album for me, but only the past 5-6 years. I bought it back around 2005 and couldn't get into it. I tried and tried, but my mind just drowned it out. I put it away for a while, then a couple years later one night I couldn't sleep, so I decided to put headphones on and listen to it. Well it didn't put me to sleep. Instead when the album was over I thought it was absolutely brilliant! A masterpiece of prog rock. No idea what changed, but it became one of my favorite albums after that.
I’ve actually never heard any of these albums. Of course I’m familiar with most of the songs on ‘Rumors’ and ‘Book Of Dreams’, but never heard front to back. What I have heard is the S tier ‘Aja’ by Steely Dan, the very okay ‘CSN’ (maybe B) and ‘Chicago XI (B or C). I only heard ‘Slowhand’ once and that was so long ago. I can’t give that a ranking, but I remember liking it alright. I admit, this is the year I start checking less albums out. It’s still a good year, but the early and mid ‘70s are just stronger. Even ‘78 and ‘79 I like more.
Interesting that you and Glen aren't big on Animals. It's probably my favorite after their first two records, love the aggression. The remix especially rocks. Also, Love You at the top is beautiful 😂 Such a unique, quirky album. Still praying Adult/Child gets an official release.
Your experience with ELO's Out of the Blue is similar to mine -- very impressed at first, but tired of it quickly. I think it's because the songs lack depth -- Jeff Lynne was crankin' 'em out, going for radio hits and popularity, and he achieved it. But albums like Eldorado and even Time have more going for them overall, IMO.
Another way to say it: the songs weren't challenging. They were easy to get, easy to understand. But it's the albums that make one work harder that pay off more in the end.
Just another great list of albums!!! Animals and Songs from the Wood I would rate them A or even S Tier. I Think "Radio Ethiopia" by Patti Smith is missing (although I like more "Horses"). Your videos I rate them all S TIER!!! See you Larry!!!
Fleetwood Mack and Peter Frampton were huge in the seventies Larry and for a time I believe Frampton Comes Alive was the biggest selling album ever, ridiculously huge and My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello is a great album and I would put it higher in the rankings even though I tired of Elvis after that,he's just to wordy for me. Bob
Watched your “stop asking why this or that album isn’t on your list” video……and just to be annoying….. What?!? No “Ringo The 4th”?!?? Couldn’t resist and yes, I’m joking! 🙃🙃🙃🙃

I got some issues with some of your rankings Larry, but we can all agree that 1977 was a great year in music.

Nice to see "The Beach Boys Love You" get so much love. I think it's very underrated. Probably their last great album. I'd have it in "A" tier.
Ah memories. Letshaveago😻 Pretty sure Iggy's Lust for Life was 77.
Off the top of my head, three more 1977 albums I could recommend..
