I watched this game live. I remember hearing about these kids coming in so I wanted to see if they were any good. As good as duke was to see the fab five play them tough and almost beat them I remember thinking something big is going on here. It was an awesome ride those two years.

Laettner was such a smart player. He would take the younger Howard to the Box. The bigger Eric Riley outside. Meanwhile Chris Webber seemed to have issues with out let passes off a defensive rebound. Fast forward to the championship game the following year he had the same issue vs UNC leading to the fatal TO
This game also was part of a CBS NFL/NCAAB doubleheader Albeit the football game was not as competitive as this (Chicago’s Bears shutout the 1-13 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-0)
Ultimately this game was much closer than the rematch a few months down the road. However, when Michigan was up going into the half of the NC I thought about this game and was very worried. Great matchup and it felt like a changing of the guard moment in CBB, thanks for sharing!

The Duke-Michigan games at this time were all pretty interesting games! And Duke going undefeated against the Fab Five is always worth remembering.
