NBC Daytime Serial, set at Hope Memorial Hospital, produced by Colgate Palmolive for most of it's run. Here is a reimagination of the credits from about 1974
This is the only soap opera theme song I fell in love with. It invokes such sadness at all the grief ,trials, tumoils and problems the characters had to face. When I hear it I can't help but see Matt Powers, Mona, Maggie and the rest. I wish I had the full orchestral theme on a disc where I could play it in my car. This ending theme was the part I always waited for, to strain my ears to to hear every chord. It is a BEAUTIFUL piece of music that envokes so much sadness over the troubles of life.
You may not be able to obtain this full track on a disc. However, there is a newer version of this on UA-cam. Go to search and type in The Doctors 1971 closing theme. It'll be brought up.
The slow version of this is even better. Plays on YT after a 1979 clip. I agree a beautiful theme. Maybe the best. DOOL theme doesn't come close to this. A very close second is the theme form Another World pre Sept 1981.
To this day, I truly love the beginning where it went like this; "the doctors, the emmy award winning program, dedicated to the brotherhood of healing". Even today, those are words to live by Too bad today's "doctors" don't have any compassion for patients anymore. I was about 9 or 10 years old at that time. It still sounds timelessly beautiful today!!
This was a very special soap. I have enjoyed watching it even though it is over 35 years old. It is still relevant and holds up. I loved the characters and cast on this show. All fine actors.
and he was also the same announcer who did promos to such other nbc shows such as "Days Of Our Lives", "Adam-12", "B.J. and The Bear", "Emergency!", etc. and that nbc daytime soap opera lasted on nbc daytime from 1963-82
I love The Doctors as much as Days of our Lives and Another World. I currently watch the old reruns that are shown on Retro TV. I wish they would show classic AW and Days!
In The UK there's also a Soap Opera called Doctors and Elizabeth Hubbard (Ex-Althea) has a recurring Role on the German Soap Opera Verboten Liebe. When she was on a Talk Show the fans were stunned at her US Soap Legacy.
What year was this? God, I adore these classic soap opera themes. Some of them were so sweetly melancholy. Thanks so much for posting these, jsellison! They're a treat!
This could NOT have been from 1974 as indicated. Jada Rowland did not join the show until 1976. She was just coming off of THE SECRET STORM, which ended in February, 1974. Hector Elizondo's wife, Carol Lee Campbell (for whom the character was named after), played Carolee Aldrich from the 1967 to 1976, when Rowland took over.
I have a great audio recording of the very next Dr's recording, the one with this exact melody but slightly more modern. the local albany NY station used to be Ch 6, which you can record off of FM 87.7. I have excellent audio for all NBC late 70's soaps. Love to have you do credits like this for them.
My guess is he's still running Score Production in NYC. I wrote to him when I was 13, and mentioned how much I enjoyed his game show theme songs and other works. He wrote me back also! He was very appreciative. That was 12 years ago.
I really didn't get into too much to viewing The Doctors, but I remember being a kid and changing the channels just hear the themes. This is too beautiful, at the 1:25 section of this theme it gets kinda sad sounding. But still beautiful ! ! Too bad this is period in time is past. We kinda need an era like this to be revitalized. again.
mel brandt the nbc announcer was the announcer of that long running classic soap opera and doesn't he also announce promos of other shows on nbc during the end theme credits?
@jsellison seriously--i won't forget. This was so nice to see. I'm searching my old audio cassettes and transfering the good stuff to cd. Once I find a Doctor's theme that is long enough, I'll get it to you. Email my in-box so I have your address right there. We need to preserve this artform, as it seems no one else will. Today was the final ATWT--sob!
Mel Brandt also announced the NBC Peacock that opened NBC shows from 1962 to 1975. He may be best-known for being the announcer for SNL through the 1981-82 season after Michael O'Donoghue "fired" Don Pardo from the show in 1981. Don was back in fall 1982 and has been back for the most part since then.
myles - This was my favorite - used to watch it during my summer off from high school - about 9th or 10th grade- 1973 or 74? Does anyone recall that Armand Assante played a very handsome doctor that came back to reclaim the love of a past wife/girlfriend, who was married to (I think) another blonde doctor.
Wish there was a classic-type soap like this to watch now - I think a lot of today's soaps began to fail when they became too flashy, and had unreal story lines and sets.
Wish there was a CD of these themes, they're so beautiful. Not like they are today.
My late mom was a fan of this and "Another World", another 1960's soap.

Hey these are splendid and splendidly done! It's as if these shows hadn't ended at all, and would be used today! :)

Elizabeth Hubbard is LUCINDA WALSH ON THE WORLD TURNS

Colgate Palmolive produced this like Procter and Gamble produced their. Soaps so the Doctors was sponsored by Ajax and Palmolive dish liquid
Wasn't Julia Duffy on "Newhart"?
Would anyone know whatever happened to Robert A. Israel, the composer of thus lush and gorgeous closing theme?
My guess is he's still running Score Production in NYC. I wrote to him when I was 13, and mentioned how much I enjoyed his game show theme songs and other works. He wrote me back also! He was very appreciative. That was 12 years ago.

I haven't seen any more episodes of " The Doctors" lately. The last one was July 1977. What's happening?
Does anybody know if this soap opera is available on dvd??
If not it should be. In fact all the available tapes of soaps should be!
Was the last soap opera that owned by Colgate Palmolive.
I totally agree!
That sounds great. I'd love to do credits for them.

The rest, owned by Procter & Gamble.
