The parallels between the Superstitions and the Nahanni are really bizarre. They both have Dene/Dena Indians, legends of lost gold, mysterious beheadings, vanishing white wolves, and tales of ancient cavemen. In fact, a lot of old magazine articles referred to the Nahanni as the Superstitions of the North. Great episode. Thank you for the kind words and the generous shout-out!
Glad you dug it, Hammerson! The more I looked into the Superstition Mountains, the more it echoed with Nahanni. I figured you had to have mentioned it in your book on Nahanni. That book is a thick stew of delicious stories and history that I'm sure we'll be dipping our research ladle into for a long time to come. Cheers! 🍻By the way, we recently did an Expansion episode on the Portlock mystery and found similar parallels in that legend.
As you probably know, the Nantiinaq which is partly blamed in the legend for the abandonment of the town, is used in the Chugach dialect of Sugpiaq Alutiiq, in the Kenia Peninsula, Alaska. But the interesting connection is the word "Nantiinaq" is apparently borrowed from Dena'ina nant'ina, literally "those that steal people"., translated in the Dena'ina dictionary as "nakani, bogeyman, 'woodsman. Maybe just a linguistic connection, but from Portlock to Nahanni we see the same legends of disembodied miners, disappearances, and powerful hidden creatures adept at lurking in the wilderness. Anyway, keep up the great work on the channel and the books, brother!

I’m sad that I found this episode so late. I have a small thing to add to this crazy legend. When my dad was a kid, in the 60’s, his dad went into the Superstition Mountains in search of treasure. He came home empty handed but he was a dead man walking. Somehow, and we may never know how, Grandpa came back with radiation poisoning and died horribly soon after. It was such a bizarre tragedy for the family. He left behind his wife and four kids. Please don’t go into those mountains. It’s not worth it.

Ectoplasm in pics is a thing. I was spending the night at my best friend’s house, which is over 100 years old and overtly haunted. We were sitting in her bed while listening to two ghosts in her bathroom speaking to each other in Cajun french, when a black mist appeared in her parlor just outside of the bedroom door. I watched it glide smoothly around the furniture. It was low to the ground and moved like swirling fluid. She was somewhat jealous because she couldn’t see it and I did 😂 She started snapping pics of the parlor with the flash on, and I was sitting where I could see the mist and her phone screen simultaneously (nothing was showing up in the pics). After about 2 dozen attempts, one of them FINALLY caught the mist in the shot. I have no idea why so many pics didn’t catch it, but when it did, it showed up as being white. What I was watching was blacker than black. But its shape at the moment she finally caught it was identical to what I was seeing, so it was the same thing 🤷🏼♀️
I grew up in Apache Junction Arizona, and lived at the base of the superstitions. I moved when I was 22 and my whole life growing up. I felt that there was something evil about that place especially the closer to the mountains. I always used to say the Indians cursed this land, because we stole it from them and killed and killed their people I told that to everybody I used to have nightmares that there was aliens that lived in the superstitions, and they would come out and attack me at night, it was always strange there

I used to live no far at all from those mountains many years ago in my youth & passed by them numerous times.
Those mountains got a weird "vibe" to them and was never in the thought to wander around them,I just admired them from a distance.
And hellyeah there's a whole lotta weird & strange stories about them,that I'm sure got some part in truth.

I have been in the Sups countless times. From Geronimo's Head to Miners Needle. Many times off the trails. I am not a fan of taking trails...whatever out there it's not on a trail. I never saw or heard anything. Only once did I feel off or on edge. On that time I was trying to take the short cut off Geronimo's Head and came to a 200 foot waterfall. I felt I cant go back the way I came. I feel something is coming behind me. I was not going to hang around or double back to find that out. So, I re-routed 200 feet away and climbed down the mountain face free handed and full of brush. I used to rock climb and I made it and by the time I got to Tortilla Flats I was thirsty and hungry! I never felt so impressed, enamored and seen such a majestic range. But it felt like the Bataan death march getting out of there. Getting off Geronimo's Head was my only time I screwed up and ran out of water. Other than that nothing really to say other than chasing mysterious rock skull/markers/drill holes/rock horse-head and other supporting carvings, but thats another story. And that one is mine!
I've hiked them many times, had a few weird experiences such as strange animal sounds up in the mountain, I am well aware of the spirits and crytptids in this location as I grew up close to these mountains in Mesa Arizona. Legends of reptilians, gnomes/dwarves, demons, are common, the mountain range is huge and its easy to explore but easy to get lost as well, tons of caves. No doubt this mountain goes very deep underground into the abyss. Some of the rock formations have legends behind them, such as giants being turned to stone escaping a catastrophic flood.

A Vor(Tex)as connects two areas similar to a friendship.
Maybe humans are not allowed to cross these doorways. Maybe that's how all the headless bodies are explained. They stuck their head through to see the other side and the door shut. 🤔
The simplest answers are often the closest to the truth, I haven't heard that 1 but I think that just as close as any other guess.

@@sarahoshea9603 Consider this as well: Within the vastness of the Mojave and Sonoran country, it absolutely plausible that Native americans were able to construct fake rocks/boulders that could easily and effectively conceal a cave entrance virtually anywhere never haven been discovered, and perhaps the specific locations are known only to certain chiefs and/or tribal elders that handed it down through the generations in secret.

I have lived at the base of the Superstition Mountains for 20 years this whole area Eastern Arizona is very strange I can't tell you all the weird anomalies I have experienced we just don't talk about it much because people think you're nuts

Jacob waltz died from pneumonia after a bad flood came and washed away his home. he was in a tree for 2 days and spent the last few days at Julia Thomas home. he died while her and another friend was looking for the a doctor. one of the gentleman that sat with him was Brownie Holmes. he got the 48lb of gold ore that was under Waltz's bed. I never heard of him dying from a stroke

I live very close to these mtns, first time i ever saw a UFO it shot out of the western facing wall stopped very abruptly split into four lights back into one light moved abruptly again split again then back into one and shot off into space like WOW it was incredible to witness.

I just found this channel but you guys are killing it. Covering so many subjects and locations I've personally researched and find curious. I am hyped for this episode, I went hiking out there in awhile back and its definitely a very different vibe, like an audience watching you from afar and energy bursts that make you uneasy or it demands anxiety on that primal level. I can see why many refuse to go out there alone. An ancient and interesting place for sure that demands respect. Even in broad daylight, it just feels 'different', stories and pictures alone don't do it justice.
Hi Fen.....I too research the strange & mysterious places all around the world. The Superstition Mountains is my favorite place to research. I've never been there before but would love to visit one day.
These mountains and the surrounding mountains are beyond mysterious & strange oh & mystical, and the things I've found/seen are jaw dropping, even to the point if i hadn't seen them for myself I never woulda believe it either. But nowadays ya can't just bring up this kind of topic matter and not be looked at as cuckoo. Even with this topic being so widely spoke about online, that's about the jits of it, it's a big thing online that's it, go ahead and try talking about it to your spouse or friends that claim they have an open mind yet don't really care to listen to what you got to say. It's quite sad actually.
Regardless, I love doing what I do. I consider myself 'awakened' & I'm learning more & more about what kind of planet I'm living on, who's else is living here besides us, the beauty of all the mysterious things that actually do happen all around the world that people know nothing about because they /we/I never was taught this in school and unless they've had an experience or encounter themselves, like I have, as well as many others, they would never know what to even look for or understand why their doing it.
@@bumblebee0369 Hi Poppy, indeed. You can feel the resonance of many strange places through pictures and videos, but nothing can replicate actually being there and absorbing the ambiance. That is fascinating you doing your research. I learned a long time ago, if you cannot mention or talk about certain topics with some people, they're not exactly interesting company to begin with. It pays to have a open mind, but a skeptical restraint to augment your truth even further. Too many are driven by fear or environmental exposures, its a very old world to allow modern societal restrictions to lessen it. I say its lonely being awake, but I would rather be alone with my eyes open, than have them closed comfortably with the many. You have an awesome channel by the way.

Hammerson Peters also has one of THE best channels relating to paranormal stuff on UA-cam. Though it does deal mostly with Canadian folklore etc etc....it's addictively interesting and that's one of those super unloved channels that deserve so much more coverage.
I'm assuming that whoever loves THIS podcast and the subject matter it covers.....you will also LOVE Hammerson Peters' channel....definitely go and check it out. The illustrations and animation is awesome and his narration is absolutely brilliant....as well as the background music, that's written and performed by Hammerson as well (not 100% sure about that but almost certain).....you can use it to fall asleep to or watch it closely, coz it covers some absolutely fascinating subjects....there are some great full length cryptid documentaries (as well as an interview with very old school cryptozoologist, Frank Graves, about the Nahani Valley)

I lived in Arizona, 1965 1970 . The last Winter at the base of the Superstitions Mountains. I miss that Mountain. Spirit beings and all, I love it's beauty.

Used to fish at burro creek very creepy place and I’ve heard him tell that story before. Very scary story! I’m a native of southern Arizona and I’ve had many paranormal experiences including rocks thrown at me at 2am in the middle of the desert not too far from the superstitions.

The actual Sky Islands sit in southeastern Arizona, Coronado National Forest, the Graham Mountains, (The Pinaleno’s), 10,700 ft. Mt Lemon, (The Catalina’s), the Santa Rita’s and The Chiricahuas, among others.

It has nothing to do with the "Dustbuster". There was a Saturday morning kids show in the 1970s (long before the advent of the Dustbuster) called "Ghostbusters", staring Larry Storch, Forrest Tucker, and a guy in a gorilla suit, tooling around in an old jalopy zapping ghosts and such.
The same series was continued in the 80s as the animated 'Filmation"s "Ghostbusters" ' which was about the original characters' sons taking up their mantle. Which is why the "Ghostbusters" cartoon based on the movie was called "The *Real* Ghostbusters" to distinguish it from the stupid one with the gorilla.
I had to search forever to find a torrent to download the real ghostbusters for my son. We named him Egon, after the Ghostbusters.

I hiked out to the needle with a friend …took 6 hrs to get there it becomes very desolate about 2 hrs in …very creepy hiking back as the sun started to set …the rocks take on a life of their own ..we felt pushed and followed back down to the base of the mountain..it glows at night ..
These sit out my back door. So many weird things reported by the neighbors.

160,000 acres is 250 mi². That's larger than Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, etc.
Acreage is hard to visualize, unless you have a lot of experience on ranch land, farmland, or other large plots of property.
My parents have a 90 acre ranch, and while it's kind of shaped like a slice of pie and not perfectly square, the second longest of the four sides is half a mile long. The longest side is probably closer to a mile.
I've never walked the entire border of their property. It would be a hell of a walk, especially because the land isn't flat, and it's at almost 2 miles above sea level.
I'm trying to picture something that is more than 1,600 times the size of their property, and I'm having trouble comprehending it.
Yeah exactly! it’s a massive area. And very difficult terrain in some places. It’s not a wonder why people are still searching for the lost gold mine. From my little knowledge of the area, it seems like there are still many caves in those hills not marked on maps or yet to be explored. Who knows what else could be out there. Definitely a place for the mind to imagine incredible dark things.
@@BeliefHolePodcast despite the creepy factor of the area, I would love to be able to go out there to explore for things like lost settlements or civilizations... but given how drastically large parts of the Earth have changed over the past several millennia, it would be impossible to even guess where to start looking.
Like how the Sahara used to be lush grasslands. I bet there are settlements all over, but they are buried in desert sands; unless you could figure out where ancient rivers or lakes were, I think it would be incredibly difficult to even get started looking for something like that.
Or, like how large settlements used to be all throughout the Amazon but were swallowed by jungle, and only discovered by the luck of intrepid explorers later, and now with things like LIDAR and satellite imagery.
I’ve witnessed some crazy stuff on solo hunts deep in those mountains. Im convinced I once had a camp that was stalked by something like a skinwalker.

I have an old stone basement right next to an old mine and have taken many pictures of one wall and theres a big stone that looks like a portal or it doesn’t show up in the picture. Many weird pics until I quit taking them and blocked it out
The superstition are big mountains and it’s the most hard to hunt and it’s treacherous
I live out in the superstitious very close to the mountains and pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Can confirm that some weird stuff out here happens! Unfortunately they are going to build a whole nother city out here 😢

This is probably to old for this to be of use, but "German" "Deutsch" in the German language is pronounced something like "Doich" which to most Americans sounds like Dutch.
There's two young men missing in this area. Khayman Welch, and Phillip Wilson. There was three but David Muehl was located 4 miles west of where his vehicle was left. Oddly enough, with Muehl's case he would have crossed over the main highway there and gone another two miles west of it. Why he would do that makes no sense to us. None of these cases make any sense honestly. Thanks for covering this area in your podcast.
No, I don't reside out in A J. anymore but it is always nice to hear mention of the homeland once in awhile. Also if anyone out there thinks being a Prospector is easy, I can assure it is not. My Partner and I take some bragging rights in saying this, They cannot do what we do!! Also Sentinel 1. and I are very happy that there are all those people out there that have varying beliefs because they all seem to love crystals and nice looking stones. Have Fire Opal and Petrified wood this season, plenty of iron formed Quartz, bright orange, beautiful.
Anything strange or weird out in the Desert, you have got to be kidding. As for the Vortex, that is the Battery and is powered by the Elements mostly fast moving water, lightning and the ground that is laden with iron , composition Magnetite, various types of Quartz, all moving in a geometric pattern by star positions and that area appears to have been intentionally destroyed twice by man. The area is very interesting but never shown to anyone.

Been camping there for a long time off of e gold rush rd on the peralta trail and hiked up too the wave cave, beautiful mountains but very dangerous.

@@alejandrogn4 very rough terrain, very hot, lots of wildlife and alot of people get too comfortable and go further than what is necessary. And if your in az you should go it’s a wonderful place too camp and if you have the means I would recommend going too the superstition museum and goldfield.

@@alejandrogn4 no it’s an old mining town that was abandoned and is now sort of a theme park, it’s really small but very fun and you can see the mine from the town and get a really good view of the superstitions. Do you ever plan on going too these mountains?

The Superstition Range is only 10 miles North to South, and 17 miles East to West. I mostly go in the West Side.

For anyone who is interested there's a great UA-cam channel called Mysteries of the Superstition Mountains that covers the history of the region. It's mostly not about paranormal type stuff but there are a couple stories of high strangeness. One tells of some people who watch their cabin become engulfed in flames from a distance, but hurrying back find there is no fire. Another account tells of two cowboys spending the night in a cave during a lightning storm. A woman's apparition is seen floating above the ground outside the cave and so, naturally, they shoot at her. As one does. In the morning there is no sign of her presence.

The Dine' WERE an athabascan people from the Nahanni Valley itself, and in the time of the spanish pioneers, which is quite recent in history, these Dine's migrated down into Arizona, which was and is Hopi established culture. So in essence, the migration of the Dine' down into the U.S is a good example of how a people undertake an exodus across a continental expanse and basically re-establish a whole new culture, with language and customs primarily their own. they did NOT become the Apache, they became the Navajo.

I've listened to many stories told about the people that experience sleep paralysis and how they all have something in common and that's the scary figures within this sleep paralysis encounter. They say theres an scary old woman with long hair wearing something like a white gown or dress and also a man wearing a hat and that he's always in the corner somewhere or in the doorway (if im not mistaken) How can so many people that have these encounters all say there's an old woman along with a man with a hat. So I believe there's more to this than what Doctors say is happening.
No doubt. I've never seen the man, but I've seen the woman several times. Also I heard her talking and one time she leaned over and whispered in my ear. I actually felt her breath on my ear. My eyes are watering just writing this

I heard a story from a Cherokee woman, about these mountains.
She said that her son said, "Okay ( peyote god) show us what you can do!"
That was the week that there was an uncharacteristic Blizzard m, in the mountains,and 5 hikers got lost.
You don't disrespect the peyote God, by speaking his name.
She sid that she always offered a pack of cigarettes to the mountain, when she's around one.
i spend 100's of hours in these mountains i search for the missing hikers out here i also camp out here on weekends
