- The sound of the whistle of the RMS Titanic and the RMS Olympic
The original sound of the whistle of the RMS Olympic is probably even sound that the whistle of the RMS Titanic would issue also, knowing that the two were built by the same shipyard.

Titanic calling out to the world with a bellowing roar from beyond the grave. A haunting, saddening yet beautiful sound.
This always gives me the chills. It's like taking a dead person's voice box and making it speak again. Just eerie
A replica should have been created and blown at full pressure with steam.
I read somewhere that a replica was available from Kahlenberg for $28,000 - I don't know if it's true though.
I'd rather here the sound coming from the ACTUAL WHISTLE from the TITANIC ITSELF! Not some fake "replica".. To hear it come from something from the ship itself is eerie, but golden at the same time.. how can anyone ask for anything else!! ? Full pressure (or close), if restored right.. could have been put to the real deal.. but either way, like I said.. to hear something that was from the TITANIC is amazing.. and we are to spoiled these days.. we are lucky to get what we get!
the one in the video are the whistles that were recovered from the wreck
@@titanicwhiz yup
@@titanicwhiz If you don't have full steam pressure running through the whistles it's not the actual sound as it was in 1912. The attempt with compressed air was certainly an interesting moment however.
The point is, replicas made of the whistles would allow us to get closer to the sound of the real whistles because no one is going to put 200psi of steam through such an historically important artifact that we're even lucky survived the sinking and subsequent 75 plus years in salt water.
it's pretty heart warming that you can still hear the titanic
I agree!
For an inconspicuous reason, I imminently compared the reanimation of the Titanic's whistles to the time a Soviet scientist brought a dog's dismembered head to life in the 40's.

It's amazing how large they are. They probably would sound better with steam through them.
Most likely, yes. It's like how you blow into a wind instrument in various ways forming different sound. Would love to hear alternative sounds to this through replication and such.
g bridgman
but titanic's whistles are now brittle, and steam could damage them more
@@anormalcommentor9452 AGAIN HOW DID I FIND YOU???!?!!??!?!?

That's TITANIC's voice. She never got to prove herself to the world or meet her sister BRITANNIC. It's no wonder she sounds so sad. OLYMPIC saw both her sisters die, the merging of Cunard and White Star, and would be the only one who got to see "retirement" (scrapped) in 1935. Really sad she wasn't saved for future generations. Modern day ships just don't have the souls like the classic ones.
Robert Aviles sounded sad because they didn’t use steam or the same amount of pressure because of internal damage. I reckon it would have been fine.
i agree with you...sometine i hate cunard withe satr for let scrap olympic...she could be saved as the SS Nomadic...Nomadic actually is safe,Clean,restored...alive..she is the only alive that meet titanic and probably olympic and britannic...withe star line is alive just because SS nomadic....but Titanic andnher sisters will be remeber forever....R.I.P Olympic class and everyone tgat died bilding or Traveling on they all...
Agreed but if it wasn't scrapt and made into a hotel or museum then it would cost millions, it's going to take 23 million dollars to keep the queen Mary 1 up so just imagine the Olympic
That expensive.$$$
Dominik Kadlec Hostile aren’t we?
It’s incredible to think they actually got her whistle to work again after 100 years at the bottom of the ocean. It’s quite incredible as well to think it survived in such a good condition, I mean if you think about it it not only survived hitting the ocean when the funnel collapsed into the sea during the sinking it then endured its long journey to the bottom withstanding the waters crushing depths to lay on the bottom waiting to be saved. It’s mind boggling😵💫
They said Titanics horns work on the same principle as "blowing over the top of a bottle".
Titanic now has a chance to speak. That's so cool..
Titanic's sounds like a calm whistle of happiness. . .
Olympic sounds like she's crying for her sisters death. . .
Edit - y'all I made this comment like 4 yrs ago now. _I know bc I was hyperfixiated on the Titanic in 2019 when I was 12 yrs old_
Titanic's was blown with compressed air, not steam. Titanic's whistle would've sounded identical to Olympics when in prime condition blown with steam.
You need to have in mind that olympics horn was 25 years old and worn out when the recording was made... Titanics had 5 days of service (before sinking... And yes its more older the the olympics ever got to be but still...)
Plus the audio was recorded in 1935 its not gonna be the best
@@thehunter473 Yea it was the 1900s xD. Way before better technology.
Yeah titanic whistle would of sounded like olympic
Maybe olympic horn like titanic when her maiden voyage

The voice of a sad dead ship rest in peace titanic
There's a video of Olympic arriving in New York for the last time where she blows her whistle. The audio is actually decent quality recorded in the early 1930s. It sounds much different than this due to higher pressure and being steam instead of air. Even though these are actually titanic's whistles, they can't sound to their true voice on air. Olympic's will give you the truest impression of what titanic's sounded like. Look up Olympic arriving in New York
I actually have taken the liberty of taking that clip, and trying to use spectral editing to try to isolate the whistle sound, removing all that other distortion and the like... not sure what to say about how good or bad a job I did, so I think I'll upload it (if nobody minds that I went and tried this).

It’s sounds creepy
0:01 ah yes my favorite ship *olimpyc*
0:55 *If this could be a game over sound*
it actually is
Hi elrond
Olympic, Titanic & Britannic have different sounds as this would let people know which ship was arriving or leaving. they have lock nuts on top of the chamber shaft that you can change the sounds for different tones.
Agreed ! Each "sister" their own "voice"! You want to know which one would be coming in, but unfortunately BRITANNIC and TITANIC never made it to New York NY to blow their whistles. New Yorkers only got to know the OLYMPIC's whistles!
You know, the stories of hearing dead people talk or ghost whispers are interesting.
But this, this is truly a spirit's voice. What was once made for warning, still sounded like a beautifully singing ship. That was then lost, but recovered long after its wreck. To hear it sing again is really something different.
Also, the difference in horn sounds could be caused by how film was captured back then, so the waviness could be a side effect of how sound was captured back then. Since James Cameron's Titanic whistle sounds more similar to the one in this video.
I'm not going to lie. That brought me to tears! It sounds like you understand what makes the voice in the video important! It had an important message. It had to be heard. It never got the chance to fulfill its role in the world. Thank you for understanding. I'm not always good with my wording, but I feel like you understand how I feel.
dude olympic and titanic sound the same but it would be olympics sound
That "Olympic" horn isn't right. The conversion from tape to digital has put a error in there.
The whistle is not Titanic's voice, Titanic's voice is a teenage girl voice (THREE SISTERS)
Someone should use the whistle to cast a replica, then blast steam through it at full pressure
Full pressure with steam instead of air would definitely sound different. The hot steam heating the chambers varies the tone immensely. This way sounds weak.
In the same way as metal musical instruments play better when heated.

I had the honor of hearing the voice of Titanic when our friends gave us tickets to the St. Paul Minnesota Titanic exhibit. They expected 2,000 people and 10,000 showed up. The line at the women's room was so long that moms were bringing their daughters into the men's room when they could not wait any longer. The exhibit was amazing with all the artifacts including the “Big Piece”. The days actively concluded with two 10-second blasts which was the first time that Titanic's whistles were heard publicly in 87 years.
It needs the full steam supply to sound fully authentic.
In this video you hear better the Olympc.I believe that the Titanic would be so also. Go to 1:00 minutes - ua-cam.com/video/6r0u5hhcU0U/v-deo.html
batyman lol it's good
It's amazing to hear their whistles.
Why did this make me cry? What the heck
Haunted sound...
The Titanic whistles blown here sound nothing like they did in 1912 because they did not use steam at full (200 psi) pressure. The steam expands and its heat affects the sound from the chambers greatly. Listen to the Normandie whistles blown with steam for a more accurate impression. The early audio recordings also fail to do justice in an accurate sound.
Wow. Such a travel back in time with the exact same whistles from two of the three sisters...
Imagine hearing those whistles in the Atlantic Sea... *at night*
...in the Fog.
Olympic and Titanic sound the same. They used compressed air instead of steam in the Titanic footage

they're speaking to us from beyond their graves now.
Too bad we couldn't have kept the Olympic like we did the Queen Mary. It would have been epic to walk around her deck.
we already have a titanic museum in Tennessee state USA. Titanic is basically the same as Olympic but with a few changes on the inside
Titanic horn: PSHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO olymic horn: HONONONONONONOONOOOooooOooOnONonAGH
It honestly is quite heartbreaking to hear Titanic's whistle, as if her ghost is calling mournfully from below :(. Such an elegant and graceful liner, she'll never sail again...
they used compressed air not steam this is not what it sounded like
@@viperfishlover8767 Well, even if they were unable to use steam, it still gives an idea of what her whistle would have sounded like when she was on the waters.
The whistle would have a deeper and richer tone if they used steam instead of air, steam is more dense than air and the whistle would resonate differently.
on a channel called aaron1912, he has a news reel with good audio of the olympic arriving in nyc after she hit the nantuckket lightship.
I love how close everyone is. People would never be that close to them when they were in use. They were mounted over fifty feet above the boat deck for a reason.
I've had a horn go off above me when I wasn't expecting it, must've been on a Mersey ferry, nearly jumped higher than it! 🙂
One of the most impressive whistles I have ever heard was on the HMS Invincible. It was a truly wonderful sound considering it was run on compressed air . As for steam whistles the old RMS Windsor Castle of 1960 takes some beating .
Is there any footage of invincible whistle

Beautiful sounds, really, and I’m very glad that Harland And Wolff made each of the sisters have a separate whistle.
Wonder what it would sound like with steam today. Becuase due to the audio back then the horn has a strange tone when blow.
ua-cam.com/video/yjQPJQb6xMw/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AviationBledsoeProductions
Since they didn't use Steam, they didn't get the true real Whistle sound. But they still got a great whistle from it. But, I feel like they should try to recreate the entire whistle with a sturdy metal, then use steam to blow it through it, and probably get a more accurate sound to the real funnel.
I simply don't understand why the TITANIC's Steam Horns and Steam Whistles were not used on the night of the TITANIC disaster in 1912. It can be heard at least 18 MILES TO THE GROUND. The STEAMER CALIFORNIAN was only 12 miles from the TITANIC. They only tried to send a Morse Distress signal with light signals, which meant nothing due to the COLD air caused by the Labrador current on the clear, calm OCEAN. The stars twinkled as the cold and warm air met and vibrated. This wonderful TITANIC horn sound should have been used as an EMERGENCY SIGNAL because the sound of the R.M.S TITANIC Steam Horn is beautiful, and it could have been heard for MILES as the water also conducts the sound brilliantly.
1:08 sounds so horrifying.. Sounds so sad..

This is awesome, like playing a wind instrument in various ways gaining various notes. They should honestly look into that replica so they can do actual experiments with it. Would also benefit various museums, movies, and that 'Titanic: Honor and Glory' game aiming for authenticity.

1:06 Olympic's whistle sounds more like a car trying to start. Probably because of the recording quality.
If Cameron heard this whistle before, titanic is saying "use this whistle sound for your movie retelling my story"

This video isn't how it would have sounded on the ship, steam whistles only sound properly on live steam.
Compressed air has a different density, meaning it will pitch differently

The only problem is steam ship whistles sound very different blown with compressed air. for example compare how the air blown whistle on the preserved liner Queen Mary sounds to how it sounds in archive footage being blown by steam. So you're not really hearing what the Titanic actually would have sounded like on these air blown tests. I do wish someone could build an exact replica and blow it on steam some day so we could hear Titanic's actual voice.
Wouldn't the sound have changed after being under the ocean for 80 or so years depending on when it was recovered

Actually titanic and Olympic had different whistle sounds. The one in this video is just titanic. Olympic had a more calm horn
I never knew they brought the whistle up from the wreck... my god is this haunting
olympic is just sad that both her sisters are gone and now its her turn to go
Gives me goosebumps to hear a voice of a ghost ship.
I sure wish they’d have used steam. Cold whistles never sound the same and pressure changes this tone as well, not just the volume. So that test sounded almost nothing like it would have in 1912.
As cool as it is, it's very cryptic. It's like its cries for help from beyond a watery grave among the other souls unfortunate enough to perish with it.
Imagine, somebody went to the depth of the ocean near to the wreck..& when they see the wreck of titanic they play this whistle sound.
titanic: hoooooooorn

The titanic's whistle on live stream would have sounded more like the Olympics.
I should really try making a reconstruction of Olympic's whistle honestly
That’s REALLY cool!!!!
We need a 1:1 replica of her whistles so we could hear her true voice with steam
They should have saved the Olympic and made her a museum ship to honor both the Titanic and Britannic.

These whistles sound really weird to me, especially since I am used to watching and hearing steam locomotives. I think that steam locomotive whistles are really cool, and they are some of my favorite sounds that are in the world.
Steam whistles only sound properly on live steam. Air makes noise, but it's not the same sound output.
