My thoughts on big Jacob: the big lad is BACK! He made a real impact coming off his wing into midfield, and if some of his supposedly more illustrious colleagues could pass, he was itching to let fly. Hanson butchered chances to give both Jacob and Cormac a score. Maybe I'm being hyper-critical, but although Aki rightly got MotM, there were at least two occasions where Jacob was steaming up on his left and Aki chose to go inside and take the contact, when Jacob only had one or two to beat had he received it. That's not a problem when his dander is up, as it clearly was. Particularly in this sort of match, just going into contact rather than rolling the dice to give it to a true strike winger; I thought those were real missed opportunities. I was left wondering, would Aki have made those passes if Lowe were outside him? Was there a lack of trust or familiarity? First time for new players. Just remember Johnny Sexton wasn’t really good on his Ireland exposure. Players will be phased when playing international rugby. What a brilliant place to do it. Well done AF! Ageing Ireland team refresh absolutely needed.
I think the Prendergast/Crowley debate is similar to the England Smith/Smith debate. Why not both? They're both young, talented and simply offer something different. Neither one is better than the other imo, just different styles.
That’s the issue with out half’s though, it’s hard to expect every other player in the back line to totally change out their style to suit during the game or week to week.
Crowley currently has bigger games under his belt including a URC final and a regular for Munster. As a Leinster fan, Prendergast needs is not at that level yet.
My thoughts on Izuchukwu: not sure what to make of it. He did OK and he didn't make any significant mistakes, so he didn't do himself any harm. But for the most part, the game just seemed to pass him by. I was getting frustrated by his lack of involvement as he has been a major ball carrier for Ulster, but then the light dawned: whether by design or not, the ball was hardly ever given to him to carry. Was this again, a subconscious result of the experienced players preferring to stick to the guys they normally play with? His carry stats will probably look poor, but it's hardly his fault if he's never picked out.
I think he played reasonably well in his first international, I would hope he is happy with his performance. I don't think that the coaching team would feed him to the wolves, by asking him to make the hard yards. The X factor is always there & available. I think he needs to keep improving on the basics to get into the matchday squad. There are some serious athletes competing for a few places (including Lions, world player of the year nominees, Ryan Baird, etc.). Hopefully he keeps improving & has many more days in Green.
@@alanmulcahy7749I wouldn't argue with many of your thoughts, but why not let him try to make a few hard yards in a game like this? It almost felt like they were keeping him in cotton wool at times. He doesn't need that. Maybe it's his body shape. He will get physically stronger as he matures, but despite being 6'7" and 18 stone, he somehow doesn't look like a proper beast. Maybe I'm over-analysing, but he, like Henderson, doesn't have the broad, high-set shoulders of a Brodie Retallick that make others look more imposing, nor does he have the square-set jaw of a Richie McCaw or a JVdF. But judge him on his actions. That'll all that matters.
@@RossoVerdeNero The Irish coaching team's man management is excellent. For every player's first cap, they try to keep the pressure off & allow them to ease their way into international rugby as gently as possible (not easy, given the pressure & hits !). They want people to concentrate on playing well - not trying to prove anything to anyone - "you deserve to be here, so just be yourself". He has that out of the way, so I reckon the coaching team now know they can bring him off the bench (a couple of points down with 10 minutes to go) & run a match winning strike move with him breaking the defense & Doris running a dummy line. His challenge is to get on the bench for the 6N...
Was most impressed with Sam P's passing. He will beef up as he has a big frame and will add muscle in the next few years. I think we see him as number 22 next week. I think Crowley will start.
@@x-latetv-x6816atrocious give me a break , take your head out of your arse, some forward passes “just” but some sublime passing. I suppose you think you get to score 8 tries passing atrociously 😂😂
@ yes they did but equally they scored 8 tries with some sublime passing. There was a totally different Irish team out there and many early injuries lots of position changes. There seems to be an ignorance about Ireland going on , but they turned up today and beat another tier 1 team easily. Fiji had won 6 of their last 7 games. Scotland beat them by a similar score with all their first team out and it was seen as a great win.
@@davidwalker2402 Scotland celebrate losing by a couple of tries at home to SA, that's not where we're at. It was a good performance and great to get minutes in the young guys.
My thoughts on the Young Prentender: he had a shocker at the start. A stupid shoulder to the head, rightly a yellow, could have been a red. As soon as he got back on, he kicked the ball dead while going for the corner, then 2 minutes later he kicked a straightforward one out on the full under no pressure. But, to be fair to the lad, he regrouped and looked the part for the rest of his game. Nothing special, but good experience for him. Perhaps the Dublin media will ease off on anointing him for a bit while he gains more experience.
@@SBSchwift You can sense the gritted teeth thru which it was typed. called out every tiny error and baying for a red card."nothing special"...these clows will be very very confused when they see him starting ahead of Jack very soon. i love it.

I missed the first twenty minutes, so I may have missed something, but I think Hollie Davidson had a really good game. More consistent and attentive refereeing than I've seen recently. She needs to be careful with her positioning though, she'll get knocked out
I don't know the laws well enough (who does?), but O'Driscoll's point was that the mitigation of "not a high degree of danger" shouldn't have applied as it was deemed to be deliberate foul play. If that's true, then, even as an Irish fan, Im would have to wonder did he get a "home town big nation" benefit of doubt.
Could have been a red, it was a lazy tackle. Other than that there was a few times where he was undecided what to do, a sharper team would be all over him.
Ireland fan here and this was a much better game today. I felt for Fiji, were they just tired? Agree with you Tim we left several tries out there that went begging.
😮Im not looking forward to the incoming Irish 😕 hate on here.I thought Ireland deserved to win despite what the trolls will say.I think Figi are an exciting and really strong team.Great respect to Figi in the prelims for their courtesy 👏
The Fouling Fijians really sabotaged any chance they had with penalties. Ireland meanwhile had much better discipline. Shows you how critical that part of the game is.
The Fijians taking the knee for Mickey D would bring a tear to a glass eye.Lovely fellahs altogether. Only seconded by the performance of Gus McCarthy won't be long before he is pushing Dan Sheehan
I thought she had a decent enough game, although I do wonder about the experienced Irish legends saying that Prendergast should have had red. Sounds like she got that one wrong.
@RossoVerdeNero personally, I thought it was a yellow. However, she can't be faulted. She gave the yellow with an off-field review. Upon review, it remained a yellow. She did everything exactly right.
I also believe a yellow was appropriate, but that where we stop agreeing. Quinlan and Irish pundits were saying also that it could be upgraded and the ref was great. I’ve never found him remotely near as biased as the English commentators commentating on English games. It was knocked on. Good performance from Ireland but even with 8 tries, you were left feeling that the left 4 more behind. Irelands defence had more to do with the lack of Fijian attack than their efforts in trying to do so.
@ tbh I groaned when I saw Hollie was reffing the game BUT we have to give up and coming refs games like this to develop and she will improve over time. She’s very new to this level and I’m not sure Sam Grove white was a great refs assistant. I think some experienced refs on the line would have been more help to her.
@@hanoitripper1809 we could say the same about a few other refs as well. It’s tough as we’ve had a number of really good refs retire recently and the quality isn’t as good and as widely spread as it once was in my opinion. Plus I think the game needs something more than one ref at the professional level. It’s far from easy.
Short and lost forward was what was said. Hollie had a great game. Shes getting a lot of unjust grief online purely because shes a woman. Top young ref
You are correct It is Alan Quinlan on commentry on Virgin Media in Ireland... But he also thought that Sam Prendergast yellow could be upgraded to a 20 min red and nobody could complain.
Just a note: when you asked early on, "Why are you here?" referring to anybody who hadn't watched the match- I can't afford to watch the match, so im dependent on radio coverage for the game followed by your analysis afterwards. Then the next day i see snippets of the action on youtube. Like many fans who are only interested in rugby i cant afford these £30 a month sports channels. Keep up the good work and remember how much some of us fans depend on you!
Hansen’s non-forward pass hasn’t stopped Munster fans hammering him for it because they want the extremely one dimensional Calvin Nash ahead of him in the pecking order.
If roles were reversed and that was a Fijian... red for sure. It's the little things that can change momentum. For sure, Ireland was the better team and deserved the W. 4:53 I also feel they brushed over that vd Vlier finish... in the highlights, he definitely tries to dot down after 'losing' the ball.... TMO said,'It's fine...without the ref taking a loo
😂😂 yeah it's crazy lad, especially when some lad called Mbonobi starts giving Ireland shit... Hang on there for a minute Mbonobi, Ireland were fighting for your fucking human rights while that same team you support did apartheid to you... Those Mbonobi lads need a history lesson 😂

Was there for the game, have to say I did feel the ref was giving a lot of calls irelands way that shouldn’t have been. Lots of instances I saw Ireland players diving into rucks from the side or being in offside positions that weren’t called at all, and the ref told Hansen not to run after one breakdown as she wanted to stop play, but he ran and scored and she didn’t do anything. All this coming from a neutral fan too
@@GoldenbanjoDJbased on the rules he was lucky not to receive a red. Once you tuck your arm like he did it’s deemed as always illegal. There was no malice but he was fortunate not to receive a red
Irish commentary said Prendergast could have had a red card upgrade. No bias there. As for Alan Quinlan, I've heard he's a really good fellow from someone I know who met him, but I get what you're saying Tim. I rarely listen to him as it's uncomfortable. Somehow, he always brings it back to, "When I used to play for Munster in the good old days". The match could be Mongolia v Bangladesh, but Alan Quinlan will end up talking about Munster back in his playing days😂
I find Alan Quinlan to be reasonably fair. He thought Prendergast was luckily not to get a red. He was indeed lucky. Very foolish. He showed that he has some outstanding qualities - his passing that you referred to and his heads up rugby is very promising and he stays calm. Far from the finished article and needs more game time. The missed tries by Ireland were very frustrating.
Is it too early to say "we're back"? Probably. The test against the Aussies will give us a better idea. That said, Prendergast was more than competent at 10. Onwards and upwards.
Agreed. I think they made us look a lot better than we were. They really didn’t cause us too much hassle and I hope this team doesn’t thing they’ve solved everything and are back to their best.
Gus McCarthy such a freak. At times you thought he was a fly half. Actual fly half wasn’t bad either. What a delight to watch is Sam Prendergast. The true heir of Sexton. So creative and evasive. So composed and clean under pressure. For the Australians and other afl fans here. He reminds me of AFL star Nick Daicos. Also the sub bringing on a hooker for a 12. I love teams breaking the Rugby habits.
The hype about Prendergast and Daicos are definitely similar. Daicos is the AFL's second coming of Christ. In the AFL, it would have been a free to Daicos for the equivalent of that yellow card offense.
@ Haha. I am not a Collingwood fan you know and I agree that he is overprotected and the AFLs poster child. Still a terrific player, undeniable. The hype, the style of play, and even a bit of look. So much in common.
Prendergast is in the O'Gara/Sexton mould of not offering a running threat of his own. This is one reason I like Crowley, he offers Ireland a different dimension (Leinster fan btw)
Agree with this and it's the reason it won't grow outside a niche audience. the rules are very difficult to understand. Soccer, golf, tennis, even curling is so easy to understand TV viewers can engage with the drama unfolding. apart from a last minute drop goal or try, it's really hard to understand what's going on.
@deeperanddown "Interpretive" is in the application and attitude from WR and their ego is the problem. Son busy studying coaching and its been an interesting journey discovering just how inept and complicit WR truly have been, the rules are not the problem, its the story they keep selling to hide their ineptitude and the absolute absymal quality of refs they have been producing. The entire WR board needs to go for rugby, thats the real and ONLY change the sport needs, everything will flow naturally from there, a professional sport run by inept amatuers
1 set of rules for ireland and another set for the rest of the world. Ireland is where nz was a few years ago. Just do what they want and get away with it

1:30 Nail on the head. Of course you gotta get the fundamentals right, but it seemed like they just wanted to bosh through us. And they've the players to do that to a degree, but it fairly one dimensional from the usual chaos you got from Fiji.

Don’t worry he’s young. The plays just go with the tried and trusted Doris, VDF, Big Joe. I thought he was solid. He’ll get more chances.
Some brilliant offloads from Gus McCarthy. Hooker is not exactly a position where Ireland were lacking depth, but the future looks promising.
Was most impressed with Sam P's passing. He will beef up as he has a big frame and will add muscle in the next few years. I think we see him as number 22 next week. I think Crowley will start.
She stopped as she thought it was a knock forward, she said it live
Good moral boost BUT will need to be better next weekend against a resurgent Australia.
They need to work on their passing, atrocious at times
@@x-latetv-x6816atrocious give me a break , take your head out of your arse, some forward passes “just” but some sublime passing. I suppose you think you get to score 8 tries passing atrociously 😂😂
@@davidwalker2402 they butchered a few scores with sloppy passes
Great to see yoings kids playing u will learn much more playing than training 😅😅

Gus was awsome!
I missed the first twenty minutes, so I may have missed something, but I think Hollie Davidson had a really good game. More consistent and attentive refereeing than I've seen recently.
She needs to be careful with her positioning though, she'll get knocked out

Irish commentary feed were saying Pendergast was lucky it wasn’t a red too Tim.
Yep the commentary team said that and Trimby said the same in the studio afterwards.
2 years ago that's a red and a 3 week ban, but I think yellow was fair.
Could have been a red, it was a lazy tackle. Other than that there was a few times where he was undecided what to do, a sharper team would be all over him.
@@t3lurid3 Irish media are bunch of whining clowns .

52-17 and some people still think the refs handed Ireland the match...
The Fouling Fijians really sabotaged any chance they had with penalties. Ireland meanwhile had much better discipline. Shows you how critical that part of the game is.

Ok that basis, France and Ireland are very good teams.
Sorry Tim, they said here on TV in Ireland that Prendergast was v. lucky (Quinlan himself)
Quinlan is famous for being fair towards Leinster players when he isn't trying to play opthamologist with them.
I stand corrected then! My apologies to Alan Quinlan :)
@@EggchasersRugbythere was no intent .
Quinny does not like Pendrergast cause he is not munster.
I often feel that Quinlan over-eggs it to be extra extra ‘fair’
The Fijians taking the knee for Mickey D would bring a tear to a glass eye.Lovely fellahs altogether. Only seconded by the performance of Gus McCarthy won't be long before he is pushing Dan Sheehan
In fairness to Hollie, she thought it was short and lost forward. She's a young ref and will undoubtedly learn from that.
Yeah she called it as short and a knock on from the beginning
+1 you're off the mark there Tim
She qs awful
You’re wrong on the short call Tim. She said it was short and then a knock on. She said that from the start. Listen back.
Fair enough. Wasn't a knock on though, was it?
@ tbh I groaned when I saw Hollie was reffing the game BUT we have to give up and coming refs games like this to develop and she will improve over time. She’s very new to this level and I’m not sure Sam Grove white was a great refs assistant. I think some experienced refs on the line would have been more help to her.
Her positioning can be very poor at times. Lucky she only got hit once tbh.
@@Ollyk1she can develop in 2nd tier or women’s tests if they want to go that route. She was condescending to the Fijians and poor overall.
Frawley with his forward passes... honestly he just missiles the ball to Murray because he didn't want to get minced again resulting in a forward pass
Probably right actually.
I thought that was harsh given the momentum rule. Hands went backwards
Short and lost forward was what was said. Hollie had a great game. Shes getting a lot of unjust grief online purely because shes a woman. Top young ref
She is the best referee in the URC and rapidly becoming one of the better at international.
I thought she had a reasonable game but spare me the victimhood. She can be criticised just like other refs.
I thought Izuchukwu was unlucky not to get the try. The pass looked very flat, could have at least checked it as it would have resulted in a try.
Alan Quinn was honest when I listened, he said “that easily could have been a red, he got away with it”, I think he was honest
Fair enough. I stand corrected.
The Fijian players showing a crazy amount of respect to the president. What a great team
Even the Irish commentary thought the yellow for prendergahst could have been a red
You are correct It is Alan Quinlan on commentry on Virgin Media in Ireland... But he also thought that Sam Prendergast yellow could be upgraded to a 20 min red and nobody could complain.
Good game. Must say Prendergast was lucky not to get red. Some lovely passes and mccarthy had a great game
LOVED his passing. So smooth
Me thinks you are a Munster fan.
Which McCarthy?
Why was it not a red card?
Yep, that was a red all day long. Total intent to inflict injury.
Good stuff as always
All this coming from a neutral fan too
Prendergast was very lucky it wasn't a red but he will know that himself, and Andy will remind him. It's only the beginning of his career so no rush.
Nowhere near a red card
It was dirty and cynical, if Andy doesn't beat that out of his game, he's not much of a coach.

Yeh he’s a good bloke and no doubt fine in real life but he is over-visible in the media - problem is he is just not a very good analyst.
As a pessimistic Irish fan, I am shocked at how bad Fiji were.
Agreed. I think they made us look a lot better than we were. They really didn’t cause us too much hassle and I hope this team doesn’t thing they’ve solved everything and are back to their best.
Your right
It was clumsy
Gus mccarthy, Ronan kelleher and Dan Sheehan share the love lads (munster fan)
One of them could end up at Munster for sure.

Rugby must be the game with the most inconsistent refereeing in the world…
Agree with this and it's the reason it won't grow outside a niche audience. the rules are very difficult to understand. Soccer, golf, tennis, even curling is so easy to understand TV viewers can engage with the drama unfolding. apart from a last minute drop goal or try, it's really hard to understand what's going on.
