I imagine grunty's curse concept closely to yooka and laylee and the imposible lair
Hell, Grunty's Revenge even reminds me of the top down portions of that game.
Do I even need to say that Yooka-Laylee was developed by people from Rare?
@@TheRezro I'm sure everyone who cares about Yooka-Laylee knows that.
Very unlikely as it was a Gameboy Color game; so basically a Nes game. Yes Games made for the Gameboy Color only and that didn't work on the Gameboy, were superior to Nes games but back then most Gameboy Color games were made to also work on the Gameboy and with that in mind, the hardware just wouldn't have been powerful enough.
Grunty changes her appearance each game as much as King K Rool did
12:25 I would have figured Banjo was referencing the game over scene from the first game.
I can't believe they used that font on official documents.
Ok I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought about how they used comic sans on official game concepts
Ha ha, yeah. But I remember, back in the '90s, Comic Sans didn't have the connotation that it does today. Most people didn't think of it as tacky yet; it was just something different. Very different from the serif fonts that people had been using for so long, so it seemed fun. It definitely looks funny now, though.
Being different or annoying people, either way sounds like something Rare would do.
They were internal documents after all, so they knew exactly who would and wouldn't be reading them.
And also on the game dialog subtitles...
@@LamanKnight when comic sans was made, anti-aliasing wasn't a thing. That's why it was very popular.
google "comic sans anti-aliasing"
It’s really a shame we have went so long without another Banjo game.
skankhunt 42 it might soon
2008 is pretty long alright
*have gone
God Gruntys Revenge was fantastic for what it was. Wish I had my copy of it still
I think I know how Grunty's Revenge ties into the middle of Kazooie and Tooie.
When Grunty's soul went into the robot, the husk of Grunty was still there. When Grunty was revived by her sisters, the body was just alive without a soul.
Bonjo?
like Bonjovi?
M3GA Music BonJovi Kazooie
Careful with what you say, he may bon you.
The first "Bonjo" got me pretty good, lol
Woah oh.. living as a bearrrr
The craziest thing is thar Sakurai even acknowledged this game and Banjo Pilot on the Nintendo Direct that talked about him.
Nice video Liam! Interestingly I seem to remember Bozzeye's sprite/animation files being named "Grampa Mole" during the game's development. One thing I'd like to add was the permanent struggle with the limited cartridge size, leading to limits on the amount of graphics heavy content that could fit in, especially when you consider every frame of every character's animation needed to be pre-rendered + saved in multiple directions (5 directions, 3 of which would be mirrored, to give 8 directions).
PS. Nice one using the modded / colour corrected DKC GBA footage :)
Now come to think of this, yooka laylee impossible layer’s hub world is like the gameplay of grunty’s revenge. Neat
I would have loved this I love the Banjo series. I hope they do something with it maybe a remake with modern graphics like crash and spyro
The game boy one really had a lot of potential
It had the looks of an 8 bit cartoonish game
MultiTarded what the fuck does psychopath have anything to do with this
That said I also love the finished product
@MultiTarded Here i'll fix it
I would have loved that idea of Robo-Grunty having her own Kazooie-esque partner. I'm always a big fan of fighting characters that are able to sort of match your own types of attacks. This was a really fun video, dude. Keep up the good work!
Banjo is my first game series, it hold a special place in my heart. That being said it's my birthday so thanks!!!!
11:51 -- so what about Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse
It already had Dracula. Pretty sure they figured it was a lost cause if they wanted to avoid offending the overly conservative parents
Castlevania is much darker than Banjo
Rare didn't make Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse and Castelvania is all about that stuff.
@@LiamRproductions right... but Konami used Curse in the game title and it still sold well. I'm sure the other games listed by others still sold decently
adventureoflinkmk2 Not the same, both are different series. Banjo Kazoie is more kid friendly so marketing wise words like curse aren’t the most appropriate.
Great, now I gotta go dig out my GBA SP and play Gruntys Revenge.
I like that nod to the original game shown at the end of the video. I was unaware of Grunty's Curse back when I played Grunty's Revenge.
0:13 is that project DREAM?
Half Project Dream/half Banjo Kazooie beta.
I guess you can say it's Project Dream transitioning into Banjo Kazooie.
@@awesomejacketdude awesome! Is some where I can see more about that?
@@ashthedragon In Rare's "Rare Replay" for Xbox One they have a special features of the old developers from the Banjo-Kazooie team talking about the development of "Project Dream" and how it became Banjo-Kazooie.
Or you can type into UA-cam's search bar and type "Project Dream". You'll bound to find some results of the beta of "Project Dream" as well.
0:06 I’m sorry..... *BUNJO* ?
It’s a joke, guys...
Yay. Another reupload/repeat of a similar Grunty’s Curse video.
... Did they really type their entire design document in comic sans?
There's nothing wrong with Comic Sans
@@GabePuratekuta
www.buzzfeed.com/sophiegadd/absolutely-beautiful-examples-of-comic-sans-in-the-wild
There is such a thing as a time and place to use Comic Sans. Inside the game of Banjo Kazooie? Yeah, sounds good. But in a Banjo Kazooie game design document??? You want a cleaner font for a lengthy read.
Not even my own opinion, it's long been a consensus that it's very unprofessional looking given certain contexts and not very comfortable to read at length compared to a more standard sans serifs font.
I know this video's been up for weeks now, and this info wouldn't be new regardless, because of how old Banjo-Tooie is, but that "ruins in the jungle" level and the "icy furnace" level were both later used in Tooie. I found it odd this video didn't mention that.
For a second I thought this was didn’tyou knowvideogames? for a second.
Microsoft single-handedly destroyed the Banjo series.
Microsoft had nothing to do with it, most of Rare's original staff had already left by the time they purchased them.
It was practically a new team, we were never going to get a game just like the old ones.
That's simply not true. They one-handedley destroyed Banjo, Nintendo was the other hand that didn't buy Rare when they had the chance.
@@danceswithmetroids162
So what is the truth then? According to past interviews Microsoft was very supportive and gave them a lot of creative freedom. So are we blaming them for meddling too much, or too little now?
Have you ever considered the possibility that Nintendo saw the writing on the wall and figured Rare wasn't worth fighting for?
I'm not going to crap on new Rare, but they clearly aren't on the same level as old Rare.
It’s was rare did it
Not Microsoft
I remember about Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge and also that was pretty cool when Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Curse was brought up although I don't think that there was any known gameplay footage of the GBC game.
The game never came out of the concept stage.
@@X2011racer So that's why
I can't believe an official project document is written in fucking Comic Sans
Imagine if Rare was told by Microsoft to remake Grunty's Curse for Switch? Or Project Scarlet? Maybe having a Banjo Replay on Switch with Banjo Kazooie, Tooie, Nuts And Bolts, Grunty's Curse, Grunty's Revenge and Banjo Threeia? Or even adding Banjo Pilot and Diddy Kong Racing to it? That would have also a great reason to bring back Stop And Swap. Doing it between GBC, GBA, DS, N64, 360 and a new title would be epic, even having Xbox achievements earned using the switch version?
That won’t happen
And nuts and bolts is threeie
An industrial level and jungle Aztec level would have been cool :)
nice to hear about this after so long
Great video,but there's a weird transition at 5:46.
I've heard of grunty's curse before. Interesting upload though.
Yes, I broke the story on it several years ago. This video has a lot more info.
Rareware wanted to make great games. Even if it is not in the form they dreamed of they still found a way to get it onto a Nintendo system.
They still great games on non Nintendo consoles
You just haven’t played any of them
The design documents have an elementary school's fall 1998 newsletter vibe.
Gruntilda ( *Mecha* ) has to advent to the Spirit Board.
There are more cancelled banjo games for example banjo x and banjo three
I honestly kind of like ideas of the time traveling and the witch possessing a giant mecha suit...It's very creative...It's to bad that they didn't do it! 🤷♀️
Of course the GDD was written in comic sans :D
1:56 Cars. It was meant to include cars!!
Cars...? CARS?? CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARS?!?!?
TCRF has an early beta.
Guh-Huh!
1:04 *Comic Sans*
my all time favorite video game characters and franchise. It’s nice to learn more about this gba game.
This should be interesting
Oh man, I love Bancho Kazoie!
Had this game.
Never could beat the final boss fight.
For GBA-standards, Grunty's Revenge was a neat game. Short, but sweet.
1:45 comic sans....
Factor 5 is gonna... factor in somehow.
gruntys revenge was an amazing game
Funny, I always thought that maybe this game had been rushed, turns out it was the exact opposite.
>bawnjo
off to a good start already
The only curse here is comic Sans.
"Bonjo-Kazooie" That's it's name now.
Nobody:
Liam: *bonjo*
6:28 sans at top of screen
who tf is Bonjo
I wonder if this is why the Impossible Lair went the 2D route?
No it wasn’t
Wait... Who the fuck is Bonjo?
Epic battles 🕹
Seeing those documents written in Comic Sans made me question their legitimacy lol.
So a British company though Americans would have a problem with a game with "Curse" in the title...
Let's not tell AntDude that. I think his head will explode.
Goddamn I love me some banjo and some kazooie
BANJO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6:27 That skull at the top looks weirdly like sans.
This was the only banjo kazooie game I owned.
Guh-huh!
I feel like I seen this before- e e
I'm hyped for this
The thumbnail looks like something straight from a nightmare
Watch this game be found like south park for the gbc
Bahnjo?
Bonjo?
Bonjo kazooie
So many corn balls in this comment thread
This is an awesome video, was not aware of all this
Edit: and i appreciate all your efforts to reach out to the 2- decades- lost development team to get this information to your viewers. Props
Ok, but where’s Fuckter 5?
That is just yooka laylee in the impossible lair
There not a single similarity
What the hell you on about
@@ShadowJinjoYu well idk i rushed comments a year ago to get top comment so idk what this means lad
That thumbnail creeps me out for some reason 😂
Already knew this
That sounds like a Good mobile Game
Do one for #TeamTrees
6:16 "dedails"?
Can you look at Yoshi's Safari🐉
The documents are in comic sans what
yey he smash
The game I didn't buy Because frogger was their
We almost got a Banjo Kazooie Sidescroller on the GBC!? Wow! That would have been quite the treat! Oh well... at least we still have the Donkey Kong Land games.
Kirby and the Rainbow CURSE says hi!
Robertsons
Banjo Ka2Di
Good one!
Hello
Why did they have to change the artsytyle for the xbox and smash? The old banjo looks so much better
If I remember correctly from the smash banjo direct, they were actually aiming for the original n64 design and even got the original designer on board. It's been awhile so I could be wrong and I guess they could have just missed the mark there.
I think it would have been better as a side scroller, like Donkey Kong Country
See, now this original plan could make such a great Banjo-Threeie. I really don't know what the heck Microsoft is waiting for.
You rly said “tedails” 😂
Banjo should have had a transformation where he turns into a man.
No
Ahh wonderfull 1.25x
