His Braves-record hitting streak. It single-handedly saved his season from being one of the worst in history to just being mediocre at best. It was the craziest thing. And it could have gone on longer had Darwin Barney not been such a defensive whiz when it ended.
I’m here because I’m a Braves fan and I was watching some baseball low light compilation and I hadn’t heard the name Uggla in forever. Your video hit the nail on the head my friend. Dude was either hotter than an atomic blast or colder than absolute zero. There was NO in between.
There is something sad but compelling about the stories of players who have “it” for a few year spell but who then just drop off to the point that they exit the game. Tim Lincecum is another classic example.
It’s weird to to read Dan Uggla. All through hs ball and post ball it was Ug or Daniel Uggla. Never understood why he went to Dan. He was a machine even back then.
I'm confused: How is this NOT a Hall of Fame career? The guy redefined what a second baseman could be and 6 years is one hell of a long peak, to be fair. Perhaps he didn't sustain it as well as many HoF'ers, but he definitely made history, and for that he deserves to be in Cooperstown.
I think its mostly the longevity aspect mixed with his really bad defense and how bad his years with Atlanta turned out. As the saying goes, he definitely in the Hall of Very Good, but he's not a Hall-of-Famer.
You must be joking? A .241 batting average and 235 homers should be in the hall? Go look at Jeff Kent's stats if you want to see a 2b that really should be in the hall of fame.
He played a total of four games for them in July, he may have ended up getting a ring for that, but to say he won one with them is a bit of a stretch lol. That's why I didn't say anything.

Quick note: you say "Instead of taking a chance on a free agent"... the Marlins DID sign Pokey Reese to be their starting 2B, but Pokey went MIA during spring training, so the Marlins THEN turned to Dan Uggla.
@@TheDiamondBaseball Id always figured he'd just come off of winning the world series with the Red Sox and was then shipped to a stripped down, presumably bad Marlins team and decided to leave on a high note, but would definitely be interested in knowing more.
I wish announcers did more unique home run calls for individual players tbh. Granted, most of them wouldn't be as good as that one, but it would still be cool to see
Because of the guaranteed MLB contracts and the fact that he signed a minor league contract with Washington, Atlanta paid the bulk of his 2015 contract. The Nats paid the MLB minimum and Atlanta paid the balance, his contract was Atlanta’s biggest that year.
There have been quite a few wannabes since Uggla - middle infielders with power that either can’t produce consistently enough at the plate or don’t hit well enough to justify having their glove in the middle infield. That being said, Keston Hiura is probably a better example from the Brewers, Gyorko was more of a poor man’s Uggla than a wannabe (a 104 career wRC+ is nothing to sneeze at)
Thanks for the quick comment reply!! For me, Gyorko came to mind initially because he was sort of just thrown in at second (from what I can recall) because his defense was very poor. After watching this video I learned that Uggla was also really lousy defensively. I haven’t followed baseball as closely in the past few years… it’s refreshing to watch videos on players I grew up watching!
"...longest hitting streak in Braves history." No, Dan Uggla has the longest hitting streak in Atlanta Braves history, surpassing the Beeg Boy: Rico Carty (a very overlooked player and someone who had a very odd career). The longest hitting streak in Braves history is Tommy Holmes's 37 game streak as a 1945 Boston Brave, which over 75 years later is still in the top-10 longest all time. I have watched a few of these videos. I surmise that you are trying to be the next Foolish Baseball. Maybe you will be. I like the topics you choose to make videos about, which is why I keep clicking on your videos. The Sports Oddity series has real promise. It is that prospect in the minors with good tools but some real weaknesses in his game. You need to do more research for these videos. I have never had to comment on a Foolish Baseball video correcting Bailey on a fact. And while I do not know everything about baseball, you will be hard-pressed to find anything about the Braves I don't know. Baseball is probably the most statistically oriented sport and certainly the one whose history matters the most to fans. You have got to get those stats and that history right for your videos to break into the majors.
"Uggla played at every level of dbacks except AAA and MLB". So just single and double A then lol? Or are there more levels than the main 4? JW. Great vid tho!!!! Fyi I also found your channel thru being recommended the million dollar Bell vid. Loved that one too. I stopped watching baseball for a bit so I was unaware of that story. :-)
Thanks for the support! To answer your question: kind of, but not really. At that time, most teams had a low-A and a high-A level, as well as instructional leagues and rookie ball for those just starting out. Uggla went through all of those, but surprisingly only ever played 4 total games in AAA during his career
wRC stands for Weighted Runs Created, it’s a metric created by FanGraphs that measures how effectively a player produces on offense. The “+” means that it is adjusted for ballpark factors and normalized so that 100 is league average. A player with a 110 wRC+ produces 10% more than average, someone with a 90 wRC+ produces 10% less than average. This and similar stats you may see (Like OPS+ or DRC+) are extremely useful when you want a single number that describes a players total offensive output
What is your favorite Dan Uggla moment?
I feel bad about it, but I always associate him with those errors he made at the All-Star Game
It makes sense, considering he never really made it to the playoffs that was probably the most exposure he ever got at the national level

Dan Uggla went 0-11 during his career with the Giants and earned himself a world series ring. What a legend.
Love that for him
Wrong. You have to play at least half a season to get a ring.
