I'm looking at the sound devices 302 to use with shotgun and wireless system. How does its preamp compare to the newer sound devices mixpre 3 and 6 and other current options? Is it too old for 2018?
A bit late answering, but if you're asking about 3 XLR output with separate with each of the channel, it's not possible. The only way you could do it would be to have 2 channels going to left and right respectively, and the last channel would be to set the fader for it 0 and use the headphone output to monitor that specific channel and you would use the monitor output to feed another system (but you would need to be careful since this isn't an actual line output so you would need to be careful of the output level and there could be an issue with impedance). The monitor output is pre-fader, but post-limiter and post-high-pass. That would mean you can leverage the key parts of the unit for this 3 channel, but you can't monitor the other two channels which could limit how this could be used.
