    I have watched many of your Trail hiking videos. You say I should follow my dream. You are my dream. I've done long-distance bicycling but I'm too old for you. I'm 71. Keep up the good work

    Great installment of life on the trail in MA! More trail magic. Cookie Lady/Cookie Man, what great people! "Bison" doing the chicken walk and also showing us what hiker legs look like, muscles! Picking blue berries! Dalton MA for shower and laundry. Temps dip, requiring warm bag. Tom's house where hikers camp in the back yard: hope they are polite and gracious so I can stay there too. And Dixie: thanks for the inspiration and encouragement that you give us!
    So if you have read this far ...
    I want to give a shout out to those young men and women with jobs, children, schedules, routine, and circumstances preventing them from doing something as expensive, non-essential, and off the radar as thru-hiking. Know that you will be blessed with happy days, perhaps with children, and grandchildren, and certainly with a life well-lived. Your time will come.

    I’ve only done day hikes up until this point. And have been watching your videos for a while now. After watching this particular video, you have given the inspiration to start planning a backpacking trip. I’m a single mother with full custody of an autistic child. So hiking the AT isn’t realistic for me right now. But it is a possible within the next 6-8 years when my son gets older. Can’t tell you have much I’ve enjoyed your vlogs. And I learn something new from each one. So thank you!

    After watching your amazing PCT hike last year, I am now catching up with the AT adventure. Yes, you've inspired me, too, and I have been slowly accumulating equipment for some hiking along the Colorado Trail and smaller trails scattered among the mountains. Yesterday, I purchased a bear vault. That made my day and was a real, tangible proof that the dream of getting back outdoors is becoming real. Thank you!

    Hey, Dixie, I really love your videos! I've been watching them on and off for a couple of months now and am still inspired by them. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Lately, I've been going through a hard part of my life and have recently overcome some obstacles (still a few more to go). Now I've finally decided: Spring 2018, I am hiking this trail!

    @6:04 mark, Johnny Cueto on TV vs the Red Sox! Love it. The year KC Royals won the W.S., 2015!!! First since 1985. ...
    I'm going backwards btw. I watched CDT first, PCT second, & now this one. The Mount Whitney & the immediate following, 17 & 18 of PCT are my favorites! I think ive heard you reference "The Sound of Music" three or four times on this trail. I think when you referenced it in Washington State or Oregon, it was the most fitting with the flowers & snow. Keep hiking & stay safe! Will

    That is so amazing that you keep running into subscribers. Alas I won't ever make it to the AT, possibly the PCT but that is when my kids are grown. Until then I moved my PCT dream forward today by working on program stuff for my 9 year olds cub scout year. Start them loving the outdoors early and when they are grown, maybe we can do the PCT? Really nice people on the AT.

    I spent a summer, in the Berkshires. It was the best time of my life. I am trying to save money to hike the AT, 2021. I drove to the top of MT Grey Lock, but it will ve nice to hike to the top. It’s so sad to see people open their home and have hikers being rude to their host.

    Dixie, I have watched every vlog up to this one and had to say...I grew up in Cheshire, MA and the AT I believe goes right thru Cheshire. When I was a kid I remember hikers stopping for the night at the church we attended (St. Mary's). I remember seeing many of them at different times growing up as our little league field was right behind the school which is behind the church. I hiked Mt. Greylock every year for about 12 years growing up (until I went into the Air Force) as we had a climb every Columbus day called The Ramble which is from the base to the top and took about 4 hours. In 2012 I moved to Florida and became a Born Again Christian. I spent the last 4 years serving in my church (Calvary Chapel of Melbourne, FL) while working full time and changing my life completely from what is was. I now live in a tiny town in Tennessee about 45 minutes from Roan Mountain. Looking back on my life I see so many times and places where I believe God was pointing me towards doing this hike.
    Then a few months ago I received a book from my son for Father's Day called Hiking Through by Paul Stutzman which I am 3/4 of the way through. I then did a search on thru hiking the AT on UA-cam and found you 3 days ago, now I am on vid 31. After watching the first 15 vids I went to the local outfitters here in Johnson City and bought The A.T. Guide 2016 and am looking at a possible hike in 2017 or 2018, not completely sure yet but you have definitely helped inspire me to do it. You are a wonderful spirit and I am so happy to have found your page.

      WOW! Thank you so much :) It does sound like you are meant to do the trail. You should definitely go for it! You've been fortunate to live in some beautiful places--how awesome. Let me know when you decide on a year! I'll be cheering for you.
      (On a side note, I was born in Melbourne, FL--small world!)

      Interesting. So Jessica is a Floridian by birth (Alabamian by the Grace of God right? ;-) ). I lived in Melbourne (Palm Bay actually) for 2.5 years after finishing my engineering degree at Florida State. Got my first job at Harris Corp. there. By the way I see you're an engineer too ... a fellow geek. :-D
      I now live in the northern 'burbs of Atlanta and am very accessible to the AT here in Georgia. I like your spirit of jumping in with both feet but I'm perhaps not quite as ... adventurous as you are. I think I'd probably do a dry run. Take a week off work and plan out a section from Amicalola as far along the Georgia section of the AT as I could hope to manage in that week and just try it out. I love your videos but nothing really quite compares to actually getting boots (or trail runners) on the trail. I think managing that week of hiking would give me a good taste for what I'd be in for over the 6 months and give me the confidence to actually attempt the thru hike someday.
      Oh, by the way, I loved your e-book! It's a very easy, can't-put-it-down, read and there is some very good information in it. For anyone who hasn't bought it and read it (I bought it on my Kindle), do it! Don't be fooled by it being an e-book, it's not a little 15-20 page pamphlet. This is a 130+ page book with a lot of good solid trail experience packed into it. Thank you for writing it!

    • @HomemadeWanderlust
      @HomemadeWanderlust  8 років тому +2

      +dajoker51 Small world man! I was born in Melbourne and my parents worked at Harris Corp. My dad was an EE there. Crazy.
      I think you should definitely do a week trip! It will be fun, allow you to adjust your gear, etc. I would've liked to have done a test run before my thru-hike but time didn't allow.
      Thank you so much for the feedback on the book! Feel free to review it on amazon. I worry about others thinking it's just a few piddly pages.
      Anyway, if you have any questions before your trip, let me know! :)

    • @Hiker63
      @Hiker63 9 років тому +1

      +mikkat50 I usually camp near the AT shelters and have to say that the last unruly people I saw were old enough to know better. They were older than me! What frustrates me are people who discard their trash along the trail and especially the shelters. Last month I spent about a half hour picking up a pile of trash left at a shelter in southern North Carolina. It's a real shame.

    • @mikkat50
      @mikkat50 9 років тому +1

      I really hate to hear that older people are acting irresponsible on the trail. I live in Johnson City Tn, and not far from the trail at all. The parts I have been on here are usually pretty clean and if they are not it's not from hikers, but locals just building fires and leaving their beer cans.

      @BuckeyeIn541 8 років тому +2

      +Roaming Gnome I live in the PNW and had done the PCT but always wanted to get back east and hike the AT. Finally happened a few years back. Other than the obvious vis a vis terrain and way more trail traffic, the biggest difference I couldn't help but notice was how much more trash I picked up along the AT.... I've hiked from Shasta to Canada and could fit in a front pocket the litter I"ve found along the trail. Granted, you don't see convenience stores and motels along the PCT...heck a lot of days you never see another human. All that said, however, I thoroughly enjoyed traipsing through the rocks and hollows of Appalachia and met some really genuine and kind folks.

    • @samstewart4444
      @samstewart4444 5 років тому

      @@Hiker63 I used to section hike the AT in the 1960s, and back then locals would use AT shelters as places to party (especially on weekends) and would leave trash. I would not be surprised if the same thing is still going on.

    With all the precautions taken to hang food in trees away from bears and animals what stops animals from getting into those coolers of trail magic? Seems like they'd be really easy to turn over. Are they somehow secured or locked? Also, is there some sort of unwritten trail rule to where hikers only take what they need and not just grab everything?

  • @RustyNail5856
    @RustyNail5856 7 років тому

    Hey Whitney just wonted to say you are going a great job. when you have something nice you can do like the trails , and then some locals come out and build fires and leaving their beer cans, and mess up the place. maybe one day a bunch of trail angles will walk up on them and straiten them out . I bet they will not be doing that again. it is a real shame that they will mess it up for ever one if its not stop..

    Great comments section below. Sounds like you really got people inspired, and I’m one of them. God has called me to do other things as of yet but... if He ever points me in a thru-hiking direction I’d love to go. Be part of the greatest love story ever told....
    God Loves YOU.
    He loves YOU soooo much He pays attention to everything you do.
    God Loves YOU soooo much He came down from On High (a place of infinite joy and happiness) to humbly take the form of a Human being. Walk through what it’s like to have to be cared for, eat, work, live.
    He then was wrongfully and painfully tortured, spit on and mocked. He was nailed to a cross and hung there... 9 hours... until His fleshly body gave out.
    He did all of that... just to get closer to YOU.
    God Loves you soooo much.
    But do YOU Love HIM?
    Admit to God that you’ve done bad things in your life. Things you can never take back. Admit to God you’ve thought things you know you shouldn’t have. Admit to God that you’ve said somethings you know you shouldn’t have. Admit to God you’ve done somethings you know were wrong. Admit to God that you have hurt people. Admit to God that you have done things that you know are wrong and you don’t have the power to make it right.
    Confess that Jesus Christ is God. That He walked among us as the Christ sent by God to bring us back to Him.
    Profess Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.
    Get baptized by full immersion in water. Die to your old self and be reborn.
    Pray to God for wisdom and Truth.
    Receive the Holy Spirit.
    Trust the Holy Spirit that will dwell in YOU and Listen to nothing else.
    May God Bless You and keep you safe.
