100% improvised, so if I forgot things that you think important, feel free to write it :)
00:00-differences between photos studies and master paintings studies
19:10-why am i doing daily studies
35:29-look at the references of your own references
Notes from the vid:
### Pinterest photos VS Movie still VS Master study
#### Pinterest
- - studying from 2D image
- - scrolling- you take unnecessary amount of time to find the reference you want to work from
- - edited photos
- instead of "raw input" you're painting from a photo which someone already modified to be more appealing (at that point, just go do master studies)
- + forced to translate/interpret yourself
- + a lot of options
- + nice looking image for Instagram
- **you should not aim for this**
- doesn't help you learn
#### Master Studies
- - studying from 2D image
- + **knowledge of the master**
- + narrative
- + composition
- + technique
- + translation of light/values
- + a lot of options
#### Movie/Game Screenshots
- + knowledge (intentional use of composition/lighting etc.)
- + narrative
- because people are usually familiar with the original, you're more engaged with making it look appealing/detailed
### Why do Daily Studies?
- learning
- having fun experimenting/exploring
- freedom to do whatever you want to study
- **discipline**
- long-term growth
- motivation isn't going to cut it, because if you're feeling motivated is outside your influence
- this makes you dependant on outside circumstances
- "mastery" of drawing/painting takes years of dedicated practice- therefore doing dailies is a big help :)
### Sidenotes
- you should study specific painters who's work you enjoy
- to gain knowledge from specific masters is to dedicate multiple studies to a single painter
- to understand style of specific artists, think about their influences- who were they learning from/studying, what references they used
- **think about why you're choosing a specific reference, what do you want to learn from it**
thanks dude
sorry for the mic volume of Daniel, forgot to change my settings in twitchstudio
Great talk. I think you mention some very important points that I needed to hear myself.
I started using Pinterest extensively about a year ago and recently began to feel off using it. The way I "studied" (not really, lol) was the way I social media works.
- Cool image -> Like -> Copy. Realizing that really hurt me hah, but only for the better.
So asking myself what is my actual intention behind the painting helps me focus on the things I want to study.
Through the product/painting, we can see into the master's knowledge and tools.
Thanks for uploading this to UA-cam. There's a lot of valuable advice.
thanks for your comment,
that's also how I started daily studies, and now I know that's a bad idea in a certain way, but without it I'll not be doing daily studies probably, cause starting with master paintings studies is a bit boring for different reasons when you start.
you're welcome, maybe i'm gonna make more content like that, but more elaborate and clear
I did the same in the past without good fundamental, and it was a big Fail. And since the last year, I retry to paint "bad" photo with tumblr stuff (over flash, bad exposition/contrast..) and it's way more easier after lot of master studies.
"Why you would do this study, and not another one" is probably the key phrase of this talk for me :D The goal is not to just copy, it's to learn.
Thank you for posting it. It is always good to remind ourselves sometimes of these important principles.
Although I can add that studying photo is okay if you give yourself some twist. Craig mullins was giving some exercices such as paint from old Black and white photo to color, paint from a different point of view than your reference, or transfert the style of another image/painter or change the lighting scenario, mix elements. You change one variable or more at the time to make it more and more challenging. You will slowly get better at creating things from imagination after that :D
Thanks man! When I'll have free time I think I'll made a good video about all of this subject cause that's important in my opinion, and a lot of art student makes confusion. Yes Mullins, as the goat, gives you amazing exercices to do. I should do more of them, definitely
I allways liked this painting of leo tolstoy, I think both have advantages, in photos can build visual library of objects which can help in concept design and develop your own shorthands and abstractions which painters will have alrerady done for you. Of course the opposate is also true
yes i use it everyday for concept :))
what im getting studying master from life in a museum is the best and preferable compared to studying master from photo right ? also was this recorded froma discord call ?
