  • Hey folks! Today's video is the first in a I-don't-know-how-long-series discussing what I'm looking for in Age of Empires 4. Pretty much anything is fair game - gameplay design, balance, community management, graphics, and so on.
In terms of my background, I've been playing the Age series for more than 20 years, stretching back to Age of Empires I. I started playing online in Age of Empires II, started playing competitively in Age of Mythology, and was one of the top-ranked players in the world in Age of Titans. I’m probably best known for my competitive performance in Age of Empires III, where I was a finalist in the World Cyber Games.

I can't agree that pro-gamers should be their focus, in fact, I feel like one type of gamer over the other is not the way to go: game modes should be the way to go. Then you will please everyone and see what sticks.

I agree with you 100 percent on every point you made. Age was the game, along with Dune 2, that got me into gaming.
About a year ago I took a survey from Microsoft about what I was looking for in an Age game, and what concerns me is the questions they were asking. They already know how to make an Age game, I think they balk because of Age of Empires Online. But aside from Age Online, all the entries into the series have been really good. I hope they don't try to make a game cater to the modern gamer. And Age 3 is extremely underrated, I didnt even play it until about 5 years ago. I was blown away for a game that came out in 2005.

For the competitive players, maybe make static maps and make match making separate from random maps.

Would you be comfortable with naval play being an update or an expansion? I say this mostly because I’ve had the opposite experience with navy in aoe 2 it always felt less fleshed out than the rest of the game and even now when it’s arguably in its best state is a very simplistic Rock Paper Scissors system between fire ships, galleons, and demos.
I think giving the devs extra time to develop a robust navy system that fits in the fans rather than being an afterthought seems important. Focus on core gameplay on land maps then release navy alongside an expansion that adds say the Spanish and Vikings as core naval civs. A free update can provide the naval system to the core civs thus not fracturing the community.

AoE2 style is how I think they should do aoe4. I’d say it’s currently the most prevalent Age game, and Hidden Cup just had a $58k prize pool or something.

I think a look into the revival of the AoE2 comp scene would be a cool video

from my more casual unimportant way to see things.
What I would like is age to go from Colonial to maybe WW1 or at most WW2.
I know alot of people want to go medieval for Age 4, but feel that age should go forward.
So you have the supposed Definitive Editions for their respective ages...
But I know that is probably really hard to have the more modern theme with the AoE formula.

To me it wouldn't make any sense to even go back to medieval Aoe1- Dawn of civilization ,Aoe2- Medieval, Aoe3- Colonail ,AOE4- Medeival so basically I waited 5 years just to get a Age of empires 2 clone.

@@JcoleMc I don't think people want another company of heroes game, this is age of empires and ww2 would completely ruin that

Jonathan Cole they’ve already said it will be more focused on the medieval period maybe like late classical to early renaissance.
If you want company of heroes play company of heroes.

    Nice analysis
What do you think about the AoE 2 DE overall?
Are you going to make a review on that one?

    • @OpiatesAndTits
      @OpiatesAndTits 4 роки тому

DE is worth every penny. It really modernizes game and makes it much more playable. Simple things like auto reseed, multi queue, and improved hotkeys like select all barracks/stables/ranges really make the game more accessible.
Combine that with a real match making system, A tutorial system for MP, new civs + campaign missions, all the previous expansion content, an easy way to manage mods, and the fact it has AoE 2’s awesome core gameplay with 20 years balance really make AoE 2 DE the best RTS product released in the last decade.
Honestly I’ve barely touched the new features either from colorblind modes to the awesome new graphics. You couldn’t possibly list them all. Frankly it’s a good sign for AoE4 how good DE is.

In one of the recent MK games, every character had 3 versions to choose from, each version with their own unique abilities. The same could be done in Age of Empires IV, with each version of a civilization having their own unique age tree and cards (if they stick with the cards).
If Age of Empires IV is indeed based off the modern era, I really hope they introduce missiles and aircraft into the franchise. It will definitely change things up.

I'm assuming that by now, you know it's indeed NOT based on modern era but the same as aoe2

No one ever talks about symmetrical procedural maps (and to be fair, I don't think I've seen a game which features them) as a potential solution for map design. This would give both players the same access to resources, but still change the map layout to keep things fresh and strategies varied.

As a more casual profile this is what I'm rather interested more in anything that gives the game a longer lifetime especialy in solo. I hardly ever play multi.
    What I'd dream of:
    - Going through all the ages from nomade/prehistorical to at least renaissance. (I don't care much for XX and XXI century or futuristic content)...
-Because of the above I'd see a system that could mean upgrading from one civilisation to another. This would also mean that we could not need to select a civ in the beginning.
Everyone would start as prehitoric men then upgrade to a choice of civilisations. Your choice would influence the possible choices you do further. Extra surprise. =D I don't know if it is historically correct but for instance from Hittites you could become Turks or Persians. From Yamato you're going to become Japanese...
So either studying what civilisations gave what others. Or broadly say Europeans, Africans, Asians, you name it and then you can become French, German, Italian, Egyptians, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, you name it...
    - Gamification aka game outside the game. In other words a crap load of achievements that are interesting just like they did for Age of Empires II HD.
    - Levelling
    - Building your civilisation and your city kind of what we have with Age III but extended. I like that from Age III and that's why I play this one the most to date but you reach lvl 40 too fast. And after lvl 40 the fun is over.
    - Map generation to add more variety. Yes each map is different but somewhat very close too. Or maybe I have some setting that does this. I love exploration myself and that's also a big one to me.
    - A more interactive IA that's not literally asking for wood every 2 minutes should you even give them 10K wood. That would be more likely to react to actions such as gifts to become allies or so.
    - A nice good old campaign.
    - Perpetual Farms just like in Age III.
    - Love building my own city and take time on this. So If I could pick what model of house and what direction it is installed that would be nice.
That's probably just scratching the surface and some of these are just ideas that would need to be refined but to sum up I'd love to have a feel that it is evolving at its own pace.
Well it is very drafty as is but I don't have that much time to think about it right now. I loved all the AoE games except maybe Age of Mythologies and I did not have the chance to play AoE Online and other instalments too much. To me there are great ideas in every version of the game. There are things that improved over time. For instance tiny buildings from Age I are stupid. Would you sleep alone in a half sphere thing where you need to fold your members to fit in ?
Also I'd be fine if the game is released with a nice skirmish mode and a small campaign to begin with and then have it completed over time.
I'm a hardcore casual AoE player but I think we should serve both worlds and find a nice compromise. I had however seen how hardore gamers can be selfish with no will to even understand they are not alone on other games communities. I'm happy to hear you're more balanced on that.

The most interesting thing I think could happen is what They Are Billions did with Food and Houses, where Food replaces population and Houses make Gold. Would definitely be really interesting to see what would happen when people realize that they could theoretically have infinite population space, provided that you have the space to place down farms and how that would impact even the lowest ranks of the ladder. You could even make population space its own sort of resource with certain higher tier units be inefficient resource wise but VERY efficient in population space.
