    Hand Engraving Videos- • Hand Engraving Basics ...
    This video shows the basic steps taken in hammer and chisel engraving. I've been learning over the past years and this is a way to show my progress and just what hammer and chisel engraving is. I start with taking a pull from an engraved firearm and transfer the design to a practice plate. The cuts are made by striking a small homemade handle with a carbide chisel. Once the main cuts are made I add shade lines and the background is punched. I have posted several videos on the topic so far and will be posting more in the future.

    People wonder why engraved guns were so expensive back in the day. Little do they know many people had to engrave with perhaps even more “crude” equipment than you even have in this video. It’s really incredible.

      Well thank you, it's a bit much to get around to to be honest. The vice is a big barrier, it's $700. The other tools are not that bad as I made mine and just buy the carbide blanks and shape them into chisels.

      The Homestead Craftsman thanks for the heads up! Knowing that, I'll probably use my pitch bowl for practice and then step up to a vise only if I really get into it. More messy and less convenient, but cheap and already paid for haha.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому

      A lot of engraving is done in pitch bowls, it'll work just fine. Also, take a look at "bowling ball engraving vise" it's a little makeshift but a cheap alternative.

      Getting started hammer and chisel engraving makes you look like you have zero skill.....takes days or a week just to be able to consistently hit your chisel.....then weeks of not being able to control the depth of cut to any degree and then months to get basic control a so on. But it's like riding a bike, what skill you gain sticks with you pretty good, even if you take a break from it. For me it's been an off and on thing, but now I'm spending time and focusing on it to open up a new source of income as well as more options with projects.

      Thanks. It's kind of a daunting thing to "try" as it makes you look like a fool for quite a while before you can even gain the slightest control. It's like trying to ride a unicycle when you can't even ride a bike........and that's just to be able to cut a 1/2 inch line or simple curve that looks bad! But once you get the basic feel, you slowly start improving then get to a point where you improve much quicker. With that said, it may be something your interested in doing as a hobby long term. Do some googling on the topic for more. I also did an article on my site, here's the link www.thehomesteadcraftsman.com/2017/02/hammer-and-chisel-engraving-traditional.html

    When you engrave guns, do you use carbide gravers or Hss or what? i suppose some guns have hardened parts so how would you engrave those and with what material of graver? Do you ever dub the tip of your graver? Do you Break the tip? So many questions sorry but i really want to learn as much as posssible. Thank you, great video and deserves a thumbs up! Cheers!

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому +1

      Carbide on everything as it holds an edge good. It is brittle so it can chip, you just resharpen. I use a ez lap diamond stone and then ceramic stones to hone, all by hand. You can use jigs as well. Guns vary in hardness due to different metals, some are machined, some are forge cast, stainless, brass parts, etc. All have there different properties. Case hardened parts can be annealed. HSS can be used as well on certain things, it just won't last as long.....but on softer metals, brass, silver, gold, copper, etc it is fine......but again, if you have have the carbide there's no reason not to use it.

      This one is for smaller gravers but it will give you the idea of what to make www.engravingschool.com/private/Lindsay%20Sharpener.htm All mine are shaped on a grinder then final shaped and honed on diamond and ceramic stones. Do you have all the other equipment?

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому

      Thanks, with filming it, about an hour. Less when your just doing it, but it's only two inches long and not very detailed. So while this is relatively quick it is only a small part of what would make up the engraving from the gun, and there's both sides of course, the hammer, trigger and cylinder......so it's time consuming. Thanks for watching.

    Curious after the scotch tape pencil rub, what was used to actually transfer the design to the metal without smearing? Great vid!

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому +2

      I'm just using a soft wax cut with lighter fluid. I haze up the metal and the black chalk from the tape sticks in the wax, leaving a duplicate image. You can also just draw out the design, but if you are doing the same job over and over you do pulls to save time and keep things consistent.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому +1

      Well I did make the one I'm using but I did not make a video, but I may in the future. I did it on my metal lathe, the head that is and the handle was roughed out on the band saw, then turned on my wood lathe and then finished up with rasps and files. I've been wanting to make a really nice one and engrave it, so I may end up doing it soon than later.

      The Homestead Craftsman you inspired me to try engraving, I weld by trade and love working with my hands and I am making the chisel you made and would like to make a hammer to match I would like to make all my tools.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 років тому +1

      If your skilled enough to weld and do other things the hammer won't be hard. For reference, mine has about a 1 inch face on it and around 2 inches long. It's stainless. Usually hammers are made from some sort of tool steel so that it can be hardened. It's fine for striking wooden handles but when I use my punch it gets little dings in it, but nothing that bothers me. I also have other hammers that are hardened that I can use for lots of punching. The tricky part is the vice, the real thing is nice but cost around $700.....you can make your own from a bowling ball and drill press vice, look up bowling ball engraving vice. But again, having the right tools is nice and makes a difference.

      The Homestead Craftsman I wanted to start with coins and work my way up to knives that I make (well at least I try to) I have thought of using a large piece of scrape round stock(6in diameter) from my work and a pipe for it to sit in and use hot glue to adhere the work piece to the top. Any thoughts?

      You need a way to position it as you cut. Also, just practicing on cold rolled mild steal would be the most efficient way to learn. Check out my other video on what to cut first, it will show you how to get started.
