Canon R5 - Dynamic Range in the real World

  • In this video I show you some photos I captured during a hike in the Austrian Mountains back in August. For those photos I was photographing directly into the sun, so the scenes I captured contain a huge dynamic range.
    So how did the Canon EOS R5 hold up in such a situation. Is it really as good as Sony and Nikon now or even better? Well, I cannot directly compare it to their latest cameras, but I can at least tell you exactly what you can expect to get out of the EOS R5 now, when taking landscape photos.

    Thank you for this Michael. A proper real world test. This is just what I was looking for. I think it's very impressive. Great images also.

    In the past canon was better for highlight recovery, now it is better to underexpose as the shadow recovery is really good, ive done upto 5 stops at 50 iso and noise is easily removed

    • @mibreit-photo

      5 Stops is too much for me. I print large and it just falls apart in the really dark tones. I don't go beyond 3 :-)

    With my EOS R 3-4 stops pushed it was never a problem,acctualy the sweet spot for R is 4 stops +- depends on the condition,activating Dual Pixel Raw the dynamic range becomes + 0.8 EV...still a fantastic camera to use...its shame that so small number of people use Dual Pixel Raw to extract the second exposure and to benefit from that 0.8 more dynamic range into the highligts,which gives you more clean shadows :)

    • @mibreit-photo
      @mibreit-photo  4 роки тому +1

      I have to check the dual pixel raw. The extraction happens in Canon Software?

    • @L.Lyubomirov
      @L.Lyubomirov 4 роки тому +1

      @@mibreit-photo No,you should download DPR-Split,its free software,just type in Google,import the Raw file with activated Dual Pixel Raw and then just extract the second frame,its very simple and easy !

      @@mibreit-photo I have told plenty of people this,but most them dont believe,another part of them thing its HDR,its NOT hdr,its simply more headroom and still from single RAW which is pretty damn good :) 5d mark 4 and Eos R seems that have the potential but locked,and thank to Dpr split we can now unlock the full power.

    finally Canon has caught up with Sony Sensors (Nikon also has been using them for a decade).

    • @gergok
      @gergok 3 роки тому

      @@alphaandomega2709 this has nothing to do with the camera, your face always be dark when the sun is behind you and you expose for the sun, or at least not as much as you think. Try to shoot in raw and use post processing software such as lighroom, you will be able to pull back the details on your face.

    Thank you so much, very interesting! I am an hybrid shooter and am so on the fence between canon and sony right now.. difficult choices! I don't know of any groups, but from Munich it's just an hour down to Garmisch / Mittenwald. You will find a lot of photogenic places there. Just start with the Eibsee and the Kuhflucht waterfall. If you want a nice and easy mountain view checkout the mountains around Walchensee.

    Great 👌how are you finding the noise in LR ? I feel it adds loads of extra noise even at low ISO’s compared to capture one pro and DPP , so much so I can’t , won’t use it. C1 is just sharper cleaner , nicer files

    For some reason this really high dynamic range pictures seems a bit dark. Whys it look so dark? is it just because theres so few highlights that are fully saturated/white?

    Have you tried doing handheld EV bracketing with R5? I have heard that with fast burst speed some people successfully use handheld focus bracketing for macro. But you might need specialized program to get the best blending/ease of use 🤔. Thanks for the great video 😊!

      agreed. especially second hand the R is a 'steal'. i am selling my R (switched to nikon) at the moment and in germany the gap is roughly 3 or 4x between a used R and a new R5 (still high second hand prices)... unless you are a pro like Michael, does it really make sense to buy an R5? not sure, considering the R still produces great photos.

      If all you shoot is landscape then get a 5Dmkiv or the 5Ds/r. The mirrorless are more suited for portraits with the eye AF. The R has banding issues which the mkiv doesn’t have. The mkiv has better weather sealing.
