    If you have the Canon R5, what are your pros and cons? If you are thinking about buying one, what do you plan to use it for?

    I actually just switched from Sony to the R5 for the purpose of landscape/wildlife. Great review! I had an A7RIII but man the R5 is nice. It just feels so much better to use than my Sony ever did and so far the image quality is great. Looking forward to using it a lot. Awesome video!

      I really agree on the feel part. Sony is making great cameras don't get me wrong, but the ergonomics/usability are just not up to the level most other camera brands have.

      I also switched, but from Nikon Z7 and sold all my lenses. I love the R5, ergonomics are best have ever used. I shoot lot of wildlife and I'm sure you know that autofocus system is amazing. I also got the new RF 70-200mm f/4L yesterday and Canon really out did themselves with that lens. One of sharpest lens I have used in my 21 years of photography.

    I wanted a camera that preformed well across multiple genres and the R5 was my choice. It’s a Swiss army knife. Maybe the dynamic range isn’t as good as some other cameras, but compared to any other camera I’ve owned it’s pretty amazing. Great honest review.

    It's great to watch a review from someone who has used other brands full time. I've seen a lot of gushing reviews, but then the reviewer states that they've always loved Canon and only shot Canon. It's hard to compare if that's the only brand you've used.
    I have an a7RIV and tried the R5, but there were some issues so I returned it. But the R5 just felt better. Not just the size of the grip, but the haptic and the shutter sound and even the feel of the material used in the grip. That said, despite a few issues with the first try, I liked it enough that I ordered it again.
    I'd love to see a landscape shooter go through their settings and any other gotchas. For instance, eye-af on the Sony is a vastly different bird than eye-af on Canon. Also, Lightroom has some known issues with the R5 and noise and lack of profiles. Stuff like that would have made it a lot easier for me when I first got my camera.

    I'm an R5 owner as well but have used other cameras. I think from a landscape perspective The Nikon Z7 II is a better landscape camera with native 64 ISO, better dynamic range, time-lapse features, and good colors.
    I bought the R5 for the video and AF performance. I wish it had more dynamic range in video but in reality the video still looks spectacular. Colors look fantastic. Easy workflow. DR in photo mode a non issue for me, so many tricks to get around it.
    Canon please give us CLOG3!

    Love the R5, I just got the new RF 70-200mm f/4L yesterday and that lens is the best 70-200mm lenses I have ever used, if not best lens period. It's that sharp. I thought my RF 24-105mm and RF 100-500mm were great, which they are but the new f/4 version of 70-200mm is even better. Awesome lens for landscape being so small and light, great on those long hikes.

      the 70-200 RF f/2.8 is sharper and a lot faster lens. i have both. the f/4 is good for throwing in my bag. not even close to the sharpest. u need to try the RF 85 1.2. now that is sharp

    I had the A7r IV..did not like the quality and colors in images. The R5 has better contrast and better colors. Going to Iceland this Summer and having the 15-35 and the R5 with me, so then it will put it to the test. However, if Canon doesnt come out with something spectacular in the future, I will probably buy an Sony A7r V as an landscape camera, while keeping the R5 and the awesome 85 1.2 rf for portraits. Best of both worlds. :)

    One minor “feature” with Canon is its color. I’ve shot both an R5 and a Z7II and think Canon colors look a bit more saturated in the red tones, while Nikon colors are more muted, but also more true to life. I find I spend more time tweaking Nikon colors to get them to look more lively.

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  3 роки тому

      Great comment! I agree with you here... I wanted to talk about it more but wanted to avoid the “Canon Color” debate that always flares up. But perhaps I should consider doing more of color deep dive at some point. It’s definitely a real factor with the different brands.

      Also, would love to know your thoughts on the z7ii overall! Do you mainly shoot landscape?

    • @c141charlie
      @c141charlie 3 роки тому +1

      @@summitbid Landscape only. The Z7II is marvelous for that use. In terms of the ecosystem, I'm not a fan of Nikon's 14-30 F4 or the 24-70 F4. While lightweight and sharp, the overall rendering of these lenses falls short when compared with the beautiful rendering you get with RF glass, or Nikon's 2.8 zooms. Canon's RF glass is amazing. I have a Leica Q2, and I think RF rendering is on par with the Summilux that the Q2 comes with. From that perspective, RF glass is a bargain! If I had to do it all over again, I would go Canon all the way.

    • @jhellier
      @jhellier 3 роки тому +1

      I find default Canon colours are too saturated for my liking, and this is using the best raw converter (DPP). I always reduce saturation 70 to 85pc.

    nice vid man. One question, compared to the sony a7III (as a hybrid) what do you think about the dynamic range?

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  3 роки тому +1

      I don’t have a ton of experience with the a7iii but I do with the a9 (similar mp) and I would say the dynamic range is similar but you have a lot more resolution on the r5. In video the r5 stomps on both the a7iii and a9 for dynamic range. The iSO performance on the r5 was really good. It felt similar to the lower res cameras but again you get more detail at 45mp

    Thinking about upgrading from my Canon Rebel Series DSLR. Plan to not only use it for Landscape photography but also a bit of portrait work as well. For sure the bulk will be landscape and I really appreciate this review from this specific side. what shutter mode do you use the most for landscape and general. E-first curtain or Mechanical. I just picked up a R5 and RF 24-105 f4l coming from 5DMKII. will slowly update my glass

    I am a drone person first, but am going more to landscapes. I love my Canon RP and have the RF 24-105 f4 and EF 16-35 f4. My dream is to get my images printed large. I am having trouble pulling the trigger on the switch to Nikon Z7 and spending $4500 on this new system that would include two comparable lenses. I love Canon, and feel like I should spend the money on the R5 upgrade instead. I do shoot in areas that dynamic range is a real issue. Thanks for your R5 review. It gives me a lot to think about. I probably should by the R5 first, because it would be the best to resell if I am really unsatisfied.

    If you have Canon lenses and your preference is landscape photography would you not be using the 5DSR ?

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  3 роки тому +1

      5DSR is EF mount while the R5 is RF mount, so the RF lenses I talk about in video do not work on 5DSR. While you can adapt EF lenses over to the R5, the RF lenses are far superior (if only because they are newer and the RF mount is easier to to design for). The R5 does have 5 fewer megapixels but is also far superior in dynamic range.

    The Z7II and R5 reviews have both been helpful. I'm prepping to upgrade from my older Pentax K-1 and Sony A6300. Been really torn between which route to go. I primarily do landscape/nightscapes... but would love the flexibility to do wildlife photography also (which, in my experience is... you get one chance to capture a moment and that's it... gear has to be up to snuff). Decided to rent before making a decision. But appreciate the insights.

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  3 роки тому +1

      I'm in much the same boat in that I do mostly landscape but like to occasionally do wildlife. For me the image quality difference was enough to sway me to the Nikon z7ii... the Nikon has a higher autofocus learning curve, but is good enough for the occasional wildlife I do. One note since I filmed this video, the most recent z7ii firmware update significantly improved the af. The tracking is better and more user friendly. The Canon is still better, but the gap narrowed quite a bit. I feel by the time the Nikon z9 is released they will be neck and neck as systems.

    Great video! I am stuck between the IBIS of the Canon R5 vs image quality of the Sony A7riv. Quick question, what L-bracket do you use with your R5 and can you fully use the flip out screen?

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  3 роки тому +1

      It’s the small-rig l bracket and the flip out works!

    • @mverick160
      @mverick160 2 роки тому +1

      The ProMediaGear L bracket allows full use of the Flip Out Screen. It moves the Upright forward and the screen has full range of motion. It also has a QD mount that allows you to use a QD strap and when you remove it the camera has nothing hanging off it.

    See now i have a Z7 and seriously considering moving to the R5 instead. I need a proper articulating screen like on the R5 and i love the way Canon do the bulb mode timer compared to the extended shutter times on the Z7ii. The Canon way is much better/easier for me with seascapes. 🙂

    • @Uisci81
      @Uisci81 Місяць тому

      can i ask how its better for seascapes? i hobby landscape and enjoy taking wave shots but very new. Im looking at the z8 or the new R5ii for those exact shots. any advice is very appreciated

    • @carlb401
      @carlb401 Місяць тому

      @@Uisci81 I was going to get the R5 due to the flippy screen and how Canon implement a bulb timer mode. Unlike Nikon that only gives you fixed times to choose from in the extended shutter times. With Canon when in bulb mode you can set any time you want from 1 second up to 24 hours i think it is without needing a remote. But if you are taking wave shots rather than long exposures, then a remote release will still be needed so you can click the shutter button at the exact time you need for the incoming wave.

    Kinda strange.
    Just saw pictures from a A1 and Z7 compared to the R5. R5 was noticeably sharper then both. Also dynamic range on the R5 was better by just a bit.
    They also didn't use lightroom as it has been known to not be gentle with the R5 files. I use capture one. A1 had better Iso performance and Video performance. The Eye AF was the best on the R5 too. A1 was showing in focus during use and when pulled pics up they were not tracking the eye. A little front focusing on almost all of them. The Z camera's focusing compared to A1 and R5 was abysmal.
    One of the guys is a A1 shooter, one a R5, and one a Z. So it wasn't any hate towards a brand either.

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  2 роки тому +1

      So I actually own both an a1 and R5 and you actually are correct about sharper r5 files. I think it’s a combo of the ibis on the r5, the great autofocus and the fantastic rf glass. I also have not tried Capture1 yet but it sound like I might need to. The a1 is super dependent on the lens you are using. Honestly any lens older than a year or two has that front focus issue ( Sony also has a MAJOR issue with copy variance). I do have to agree that the z system is dead last for af. There are some af features on Nikon I like for landscape though. I will try the r5 in capture1 to see if I like the DR I’m getting better, thanks for the tip!

    Scientific methods of measuring the quality of sensors and their tonal range do not confirm your feelings about the R5 and Z7. Both sensors obtained the same results: 14,6 in DXO test. Sorry :)

    • @summitbid
      @summitbid  2 роки тому

      DXO doesn’t disclose how they do their tests so calling them scientific is speculative at best. I can only speak to my experience. I have shot and edited thousands of photos with the canon r5, z7, z7ii, Sony A7riv and Sony a1. My experience is that I do not have the editing latitude with the canon files I do with all the other cameras mentioned. Also of note the canon’s sensor is not backside illuminated (which means it’s not an apples to apples comparison) and they both have different base ISOs. So with those factors in mind, real-world usage is probably the best way to see a difference. Granted it’s just an opinion, but it’s not based on nothing.
