Excuse me Nero's "Devil Trigger" is easily the best song on that OST. Until Bury the Light hit at least. Now they fight each other for dominance.
I'm so glad that Metroid Dread resolidified Samus Aran being the badass she was before Other M. I really hope Aya Brea gets a similar treatment in the future, it's what she deserves.
Unlikely. Books author co owns the rights and he's doesn't want anymore.
I also doubt the novel author is willing to sell the right to Square, or anyone.
@@makeitthrough_ the books author owns the ip name of parasite eve and the whole premise of mitochondrial eve. The game was sequal to the book and He didn't want anymore adaptations after PE2 so square had to do a spin off much like what you described with little to no connections to the pe1 and 2 apart from the characters. Hence the 3rd birthday.

"The 3rd birthday" was my first game in the trilogy and i never knew that there were games before, it sounds so disconnected from the past games tbh
This is the same for me. So I suppose because it was my first one, I find myself not disliking it as much as Parasite Eve fans might.
It's like Resident Evil games. I start on 5 and thus had a great time with it. Yet RE vets disliked it because it was so action packed and less survival horror compared to what came before.
But since I start one 5 I love the action AND the survival horror. Have yet to play 7/8 so I don't have strong opinions on 8.
Anyways back to Parasite Eve. I'm sure I'll love the first 2 almost as much as I enjoyed the 3rd vs a PE vet.

I think you can justify this due to her losing her memories. I mean, she's essentially somewhat closer to a rule 63'd Roxas on this game.
I laughed. I laughed and I clapped.
Parasite eve doesn't change any characterization of Aya, it's explained in the story and having played the last games it makes sense thematically, if not narratively
"with adult themes" is an instant red flag for every game in development. P.E. 1&2 were entirely adult, they both handled several adult themes and established fully grown characters in interesting ways. every time a developer says that, the game is almost universally guaranteed to be trash.
I mean, definitely. Sex and pregnancy is at the core of the original game.
"Adult themes" is male dev speak for "TITS!!!!!" and often sexual assault being dressed up in way to downplay it or even try to titillate.
@@darthizzleI think across the whole of gaming it has less to do specifically with male devs, and more to do with crappy writers and braindead investors.
Take Obsidian's "Pillar's of Eternity 2" for example. The first game was well written and interesting, though definitely not perfect. The second game's writers proclaimes the story would be more "mature" yet what this boiled down to in the end was a large number of NPCs randomly being horny for the PC, regardless of the PC's gender.
The conflation of mature themes with sexual themes is really annoying, and way too prevalent across all media

The scene with Kyle where you pointed out how weird his lines are, him speaking like a lover to a woman who has no idea who he is- my eyebrow just raised a little bit more with each line. It was coming off my face by the end.
It gets worse when you realize what the ending means for that scene in particular.
He’s voiced by Jensen Ackles though so that’s pretty cool 🤷🏻♂️
Creepy is an understatement
If they wanted a weaker protag, they should have chosen EVE legitimately... no twist. She's relatively unskilled (set this slider wherever you want for a different story) but let her borrow power/skill from AYA. Hell, let there be two protagonists and just switch between them. That makes for some fun level design.
Agree, the whole Team based combat should been more Final Fantasy Tactics than Whatever the Hell they were going for in this!
That would have been way better. Have Aya missing, and a teenage Eve and Daniel (or an older version of Ben) are looking for her while all hell breaks lose. All the while we see Eve develop into her own.
Can we just retcon the entire game into being just a fever dream so we can use this idea Instead? Please and thank you!
Also, Kyle technically said all that creppy stuff to Eve... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
That takes creative effort.
The final little monologue is legitimately hard to listen to, not because it's bad, but because you can really hear the pain and exhaustion in Suzie's voice. The fact that this game was greenlit, written, programmed, animated and voiced in both Japanese and English without anyone stopping along the way to question whether it was in any way bad is mind boggling.
The worst thing about any bad executions of anything is the realization of why didn't anybody stopped to think about what they were doing at the time. Let me paraphrase a quote from a movie: "Your Developers Were So Preoccupied With Whether Or Not They Could, They Didn’t Stop To Think If They Should.'"
That last segment where you talked about how much Aya meant to you as a role model was super powerful. I'm glad Parasite Eve helped prop up the self-efficacy of a generation of gamers even if the series ultimately did Aya dirty.
Turns out you're the new Aya. The Aya was inside us all along. :0
OMG what did they do to Maeda! I'm irrationally upset about this.
I stumbled across Parasite Eve on PS1 from a friend's yard sale. The first game was the most pleasant surprise of an RPG when I popped it in...but I'm definitely glad I didn't pursue any kind of payoff with the trilogy, yeech!
It is not really irrational to be upset that SE did our boy Maeda so wrong.
From a somewhat stuttering to a complete creep, not just Maeda tho almost all of the characters got a stupid 360 changes. What they did to Aya is the most unforgivable and a big fuck you SE by shooting her at the end of the game.
I never played the original games to a point where I saw him and I knew they had fucked up a classic character when I saw his scenes.
It's odd how similar to Hojo they made him look for this game.

Painfully accurate
Classic situation where new director just given on silver platter a near-dead IP, a labour of love from others, given freedom to do whatever to it.
Game publisher, owner of IP, don't give a care. As long as it sells. If it flops, just pull a DMC, RE remake.
Thus final game is all about sex sells, gore sells, taboo sells, torture sells (game has souls-like difficulty).

Fun fact: The 3rd Birthday's bride and dive suite costumes were the source of inspiration of Nina William's default (with reduced blood) and story costume in Tekken 7. They even copied her pose in Nina's intro where she points her pistol like Aya did in her wedding

This is unfortunately a topic our world is incapable of having a good faith discussion on, and yet another casualty of the Nirvana Fallacy. Like many a thought experiment, it would be nice if we could remove ourselves as people from our inculcated societal judgments, but as long as emotion rules the day, that’s unlikely to ever happen in a universe such as ours.
Too bad too, as if suitably removed from the judgmental characteristics of our overly Puritanical society, it would make for a good topic to hone debating skills on, as well as questions about emotional maturity versus physical, instrumentality, agency, and beyond.
@Ghost_Troupe Did you really just try to justify pedophilia??...

For me, the Parasite Eve saga ended when Aya fired the last killing shot at the top of the Chrysler Building. She bravely climbed a tower of hell, completed her hero's journey, and went home as the saviour of New York City and a badass legend. Most importantly, she found true inner peace. "Let's go home, Maya. Let's go back for good." -- The End
I get extra emotional about this because I encountered this game when I was eight. After years of homelessness, I didn’t complete it until I was 26. It was like both of us got closure that night.
Parasite eve 2 was great though.
Literally count Parasite Eve as one of my favorite games… 3rd birthday hurt SO much. I will never forget the legitimate rage I felt at the ending.
Realism: When your clothes can get ripped off when you're in SOMEBODY ELSE'S BODY.
Don’t try to overthink it, the developers clearly didn’t. And when you realize that Aya with her clothes ripped off is basically an underage little girl in an adult woman’s body it just makes it worse.
That was the first thing that I noticed when I booted up this game. It's the one thing I couldn't get over. How is my thong showing when I dove into a giant male soldier?! I mean, unless that was his thing. Then I guess that's cool.
It's also made worse that Ayas Husband talks to the girl as a grown women and oh gosh it's terrible
@blackrave404 Sure, in some cases that could be justified, but again, Aya isn't even in her own body. She's in somebody else's at nearly all times. Her own clothes should be fine.
As for superman and supergirl, yeah, they should... but if I recall correctly, the reason they don't is because their invulnerability actually includes a thin force field around their body, nearly skintight, that protects their tight outfits as well as their bodies.
@@wadespencer3623 Superman’s costume (the main one anyway) is usually said to have been made out of the special, extremely durable kryptonian fabric used to swaddle him as a baby when he was put in the capsule thing that sent to Earth. It has gotten torn and damaged on a few occasions but as far as I remember that usually only happens when he’s fighting a really strong foe like Doomsday. @jose ramiro reynoso ruiz i agree. Yes the story is shit, but gameplay and exploration is so fun
What I loved about PE1 was that it was a normal city, starting with Aya being a regular dude going to a play with her date, and then rats start to turn into monsters in front of her and we unravel the story behind how a completely normal setting got so insane. I feel like they completely forgot what made the first game so cool.
Parasite Eve 2 did something similar with the small town of Dryfield but it didn't have as much impact as seeing the disaster start from the beginning. 2 also suffered from not having a central villain like 1 did. Golem there just...didn't fit the bill. He always just felt like a lackey.
@@palladiamorsdeus 2 had potential but we didn’t get any of the fallout or threat as we did in 1, there was less human casualties we saw in 2 vs 1.
For example : in 1 we had to put Sheeva down even though she was a good dog before the mutation and we saw 2 human tragedies tolling into the thousands: the play at the Carnegie Hall and then the play attempt at Central Park.
The betrayal that those influenced by “eve” could had been set up greater. I don’t think we got a proper cut scene of one of the bad endings in 2 involving Kyle. And maybe more backstory on golem no.9 and why the facility existed in the first place.
"1998, I'll never forget it"
Neither will Leon and Claire...
Neither will Gordon.
I'm 15 minutes in and I can't help but feel like... why Parasite Eve for this gameplay idea?
Squad control and squad gameplay just is so antithetical to the first games story as well as gameplay.
This game basically erases 99% of itself from canon with its ending. With Bohr gone the SWAT team never arrives to Massacre the attendants at the wedding. The Twisted never appear. And, there is a secret ending (4th birthday) that heavily implies that Aya (her consciousness) may still be alive.
So basically a Sonic 06 ending? 😂
I was thinking why don't they just make another game where she is reborn through fragments of memory left within some mitochondria cells. It would make a great sequel and I can think of a lot of ways where she can come back, either as a semi-final boss that turns good again to stop the bigger threat or as a surprise rebirth just in the nick of time to stop the player getting killed by the final boss. It literally writes itself!
Of course there is so if a 4th game was greenlit this flimsy ass excuse could be pulled from to include it as 'canon'. At this point a full reboot of the first game would be imo the best course of action. My fingers are crossed the reason Square gave Hunter so much shit about this video is because MAYBE they're working on something.
@@autobotstarscream765 Exactly.
@@wadejohnston4305 doubt it. There's a licensing issue with the author
Regarding the wedding massacre: Aya and Kyle were on a target list of the government after PS2. So I guess that's the reason?
Also the reason why noone is talking about it is because noone played it. I remember having my mouth agape, literally speechless during the ending. It literally killed the franchise, but it was already basically dead and buried at that point. But as far as I know Nomura only did designs for the game so don't put this on him. The writer was a certain Lightning-obsessed producer who made sure Aya/Maya was voiced by Lightning's Japanese VA.
Between Aya in this game, Aqua in Kingdom Hearts and how prominent Lightning is in stuff like Dissidia, I think most of Square has a thing for Lightning.
i was literally saying to myself "dafuq is she trying to be, Lightning or something?"

Parasite Eve: A deep engaging game full of challenges, secrets, and compelling story. It had an ambiguous ending hinting at a sequel. I am eager to see where this is going.
Parasite Eve 2: Character game play is actually improved a bit. Buuuuut, parasite powers are over simplified, battles are boring, and story makes little sense.
3rd Birthday: WHAT IN THE NAME OF ZEUS'S THUNDERING COCK IS THIS SHIT!?
Put it away Zeus, you've done enough damage with that thing.
Parasite eve 1 to 3rd birthday is the most jarring change of tone in a sequel ever
Parasite Eve 2 was not boring. Parasite Eve 1 was
I disagree. Her powers in PE1 were more over simplified and one dimensional compared to the 2nd game, tbh. In the 2nd game, there was more strategy involved since some spells could miss and some were very useful for damage over time, stunning enemies or even knocking enemies back. Definitely more strategy involved.
3rd Birthday is wayyy better, better graphics, better enemies, better combat and everything better than parasite eve... I'd take 3rd birthday everyday.
I went on a journey to play through the Parasite Eve series and I fell in love with both games. I didn't want to play 3rd Birthday due to its reputation. A friend said I had to because I need to feel what everyone else did at that time....I never want to touch this game ever again. Everything you stated is exactly how I felt. Tetsuya Adultman Normura is doing a videos game business.
It's like Tetsuya Nomura is a complete hack and the only thing he did that was worth anything were monster designs for the earlier Final Fantasy games. Why he keeps getting put into high profile games is beyond me, specially after its raping of Final Fantasy 7 with its shitty "remake" (and i don't even care for for Final Fantasy 7 much at all).
I'm researching Parasite Eve for an episode of my podcast (Retro Ridoctopus). My love for the original PE is worn on my sleeve as I'm known as Parasite Steve on the show. Unfortunately, I have no way of currently playing the game so I've been watching videos online to refresh my memory.

"As a scared little kid growing up in New York I found strength in characters like Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield and especially Aya Brea."
YES. While I am not from New York, very far from, seeing these badass women in video games growing up heavily influenced the person I am today. Aya Brea and Jill Valentine were my actual inspirations and I wanted to be like them so bad. Both of them have received absolutely awful treatment in games that came out when I was blossoming into a young woman and it devastated me. Perhaps it is over dramatic to say that it was devastating but these were my heroes; of course there were women in other games at the time but I was used to the precedent of seeing characters like Meryl Silverburgh or Tawna being saved by their love interest. While The Third Birthdays' OST was amazing I remember absolutely nothing about the game while PE1 and PE2 I can probably remember the game from heart. Sad really.
I remember as a little boy in California finding both male and female protags to be awe inspiring. Cloud Strife, Jill Valentine, Aya Brea, Regina from Dino Crisis, and so many more. I found the courage playing these games to stand up for myself, and not take the bullshit from anyone negative. Sure, I was still shy, but if need be, i could not hide behind someone. It's how I got my girlfriend later on in life.
I grew up seeing these women in video games, they are awesome, I really like the characters Regina, Aya, Jill and Claire, and the other resi character of course Leon and Chris.
It becomes suddenly annoying that the world wants to tell me I'm a misogynist because I'm not a woman lol, so I do find it funny how someone like me who played so many games as a kid, looking up to these characters, who has never had a problem with women, suddenly having a problem with women simply because of the weird assed political messes the world wants to get into for no reason, good job humans on creating the things you hated from something that was legitimately good.
It's why I don't bother with politics or the news anymore, it simply destroys what I see as good, or makes me dislike things I never had any opinion of beforehand, pointlessness at its finest.

The opinions on this game are very divisive, but I'll stay on the "That's what Square Enix is now" hill, because fuck 'em
Dissidia NT would have been fine if it took what made Dissidia and 012 good, improved it, and removed assists and Lightning. But instead, it took what made those games good, threw it in a bin, tied what was left with thin rope and hide it behind an "Online" wall.
FFXII Zodiac Age is good, because FFXII was good, it is just a remake. Also, it makes the game a whole lot easier, your finishing moves allow you to completely steam roll any bosses, so it's just fucking dumb.
As for Type-0.... I heard about the game twice: First because avatars in Dissidia, second time because it finally came out of Japan and no one could play it properly during release because optimization is apparently not a thing for Square Enix.
So to me, it just does not exist, not in the sense that I deem it too bad to be remembered. But in the sense that the world outside of Japan got fucked over, so I do not care nearly enough to have the information that is this game's existence print itself in my mind.
I have one small "easy" fix so they could keep the characterization they wanted here and not screwed everything up. How about show the wedding at the beginning. Its monsters or mitochondrial mutants... whatever. Eve is fatally injured in the attack. Aya somehow switches bodies saving Eve, but dying in her place. Thus we have Aya's body with its powers and legacy to uphold, yet with Eve's lack of well everything. Im not sure I can offer ideas up for the rest but....
Kind of like Nier Automata's 2B handing off her legacy, ie memory data/her main weapon and her battle pod to A2 before dying? Granted she remained who she is despite carrying 2B's data in her head - which is how Yoko Taro justifies A2 using basically everything 2B was using until the moment she died.
Except, those two are androids of the same production template (but of differing model generation) while Eve and Aya are human-ish.... Welp it fits. SE *have* been playing around with themes of genetic memory in FF7 and its spin-offs so they can actually do that and get away with it.
Of course freaking Yoko Taro have the solution to convoluted plot lines lol. His own Drakengard/Nier series have dashes of interdimensional/time travel in it despite being mostly behind the scenes.

I loved how there were so many options for customization in PE2; between the Armor, Weapons and PE Powers you chose you could build Aya pretty much however you wanted after a certain point, and the ability to pick a weapon to go through the game with as "your weapon" really hit a chord with me.
I hate 3rd Birthday so much that I forget it exists until someone mentions it. What they did to Aya and Eve's characters was absolutely criminal.
