      Retire.

    • @descendency
      @descendency 8 місяців тому +34

      That's really not enough to retire at his age. The reason why most players want to win the WC (or get titles, in general) is to sell their content (books, courses, etc) at a higher price - and generally to accept big money to play in big name tournaments (like Tata Steel). I don't know what Ding is doing or if he even has such material to sell, though.
      It's weird to just disappear, but I do hope he's doing OK mentally. I don't think he was really as prepared mentally to actually win.

    There's a cool Chinese idiom related to this: 破釜沉舟 (pofuchenzhou), metaphorically meaning to cut off all means of escape in order to drive yourself toward a win. Based on a legend of a general preferring his army to break their cookware (pofu) and burn their own boats (chenzhou) to motivate themselves for a battle against the enemy.
    Liren sacrificed all nonessential material, save that needed to secure the persuasive victory over his opponent, balancing it all on a sword's edge.
    Great game, great commentary by Levy.

    Hey Levy, about the name thing. You almost had it right, but I just want to clarify. Bai is the family name, Jinshi is the first name. So Bai Jinshi is actually the correct way to say it in Chinese too. I think it's extra confusing because some people will follow the English convention of putting the first name first when saying their name in English, like Arjun Erigaisi (Arjun is his first name), whereas others will stick to the same ordering as their native language even when saying their name in English, like Viswanathan Anand (Anand is his first name). So it's tough for sure, and I applaud you for giving it your best! Hope you can take something away from my comment. Cheers bud!

    It was slightly disconcerting to see the end of the world championship. When Ian Nepomniachtchi realised he had lost he almost lost physical coordination and was stumbling around, and the main emotion Ding Liren showed was relief. Relief that it was over. No joy, no smiles. These championships seem truly quite the ordeal for the participants. I do hope Ding Liren comes back, but if he chooses not to then I wish him a career that brings him the joy he deserves. 💗
