When Magnus lets the knight get to b4, it gets lost in the position. When I let it get to b4, it eats all my pawns and then I get forked and lose my queen.
It's always fascinating to see how the board changes over the course of the game. Looking forward to more deep dives on chess games, especially featuring more of Magnus and Ding.
He isn’t back he’s drawn most of his games he was beaten by Rapport today he’s at the bottom as far as Grenke tournament going he needs to start winning to make people believe in him again I hope he does
Ding was burnt out so it's possible he chose to focus on defending his title. Honestly Ding doesn't need to start winning to make ppl believe him because everyone thinks he might lose his title so all he has to do is defend it. I mean, if he's burnt out from chess, he shouldn't try to win everything, he should just try to defend his title (else he'll certainly burn out). Ofc, maybe Ding wants to lose his title if he's really hoping to quit chess.

I think this is the kind of chess we need to see for the WCC. A “fast” classical game could be a compromise to a more marketable game while keeping the same quality and similar length of game seen previously with the 90 min format. Then, a transition to tie breaker rapid wouldn’t be such a huge jump in time controls

27:35 Only an obnoxious person would obliviously crack his fingers into the microphone like that. So annoying. In the tranquil embrace of the forest, our family's annual camping trips were a sanctuary of laughter and warmth. But amidst the crackling fire and whispered secrets, an unwelcome intrusion shattered the serenity. My cousin, Mark, possessed a peculiar habit ‒ cracking his fingers with unabashed glee. Each snap echoed through the stillness, like sharp cracks in the delicate fabric of our peaceful night. With each pop, my skin prickled with discomfort, as if the very air recoiled at the intrusion. I mustered the courage to speak, pleading with Mark to cease his unsettling symphony. Yet, he dismissed my plea with a careless shrug, his laughter drowning out my unease. Oblivious to the disquiet he stirred, he continued, each crack intensifying my discomfort. As the years unfolded, the memory persisted like an unwelcome guest, refusing to fade into oblivion. The sound of cracking fingers haunted my thoughts, evoking a visceral reaction that I struggled to suppress. The memory became a shadow, a constant reminder of that unsettling night by the campfire. Though time has softened the edges of that memory, the discomfort lingers ‒ an echo of childhood aversion etched into the very core of my being. Reflecting on that discomfort now, I am compelled to make a heartfelt plea: let us be mindful of the sounds we create. For in our pursuit of personal joy, we may unknowingly inflict discomfort upon others. Let empathy guide our actions, sparing others from the echoes of discomfort that linger long after the sound fades.
“Chess is not all that difficult “ Levy while he has not become a GM. Chess is ***** Hard af imho. I 😂 so hard at the 400-700 games he covers bc I’m “that guy” making 6 blunders straight thinking I’m at 80% plus accuracy till I see it’s 41%…
Ding is obviously still a strong player, and is improving compared to the start of this year. It will be interesting to see if he improves enough to defend his title.
The Grenke Open and Classic was a magnificent Tournament. I was there playing the c-open (c is for chaos :D) while watching the classic that happened at the same time in parallel. If you have the chance come by next year.
Karlsruhe pronunciation tutorial: Karls -> Carls ru -> take the ru from rude he -> take the he fromhesitation Now just heavily lean on CARLS and you are fine :)
If you plan to cover more games from Grenke, Arjun Erigeisi played an insane game in the open against a 12-year old kid that went on for 136 moves and the kid (rated hundreds of points lower than the world number 9!!) drew him! Because everyone else in the open was finished, we all just stood there, hundreds of people watching this game, and when they shook hands everyone applauded. It was something I've rarely experienced in a tournament. And a super crazy game at that.
I don’t think Magnus not being the world champ of classical while being #1 is a big deal. In a lot of sports the best player doesn’t always win the champ. Ik in this case it’s bc Magnus didn’t play but still. Not that crazy
I think 45 min per player is a decent format for the audience and have no idea why it's not used more often. You don't get these endless stretches of dead time when no move is being made in the more typical classical chess games and sometimes you simply don't have several hours to spare, but it's still not as sloppy as rapid chess can sometimes be.
I live just down the road from Karlsruhe. I was gutted when I heard this match happened and I missed it. Would have been great to watch the world champ by proxy against the undefeated world champ.
really love your video.. nice format very easy to understand no nonsense... nice intro aswell.. very relaxing and non stressful because its chess and i tell my brain that it is not that bad... thus very helpful.. i have my entrance exam on 5th so nice breaks in the form of your videos thanks..
I agree about the knight fact you stated at the end of the video. Somehow the wording is very mysterious and spooky to me, "the black knight wanders over to that side and frequently gets lost in the position." Somehow the fact that Magnus can just... TELL that that's going to happen and the fact that it's so random yet so predictable is kind of spooky to me. I'm not explaining myself well.
