What I love about the world GRRM has created and the way he writes is that we get the sense that the Seven Kingdoms and the war for the Iron Throne feel like an entity in themselves. It's a huge, dynamic, ever-changing web of motivations and allegiances, and a lot of people in this story exist at the mercy of it unless they know how to "play the game". To me that's what makes ASOIAF stand tall in the fantasy genre--through these many perspectives, we get a glimpse into that terrifying, cold, brutal machine that serves as the heart of the story
He seems like such a cool, down-to-earth kind of guy. Really easy to understand, whatever he's talking about. I can, (and apparently have been,) listen to these clips all day. 👍
As an aspiring writer, I dont think I've ever heard so much useful information from an author other than R.R. Martin. Man has a segment to help you thhrough every moment in which you feek stuck.
I am just happy that he is a fellow alumni of my school. People fanboy about meeting this and that actor or singer. I am happy that was able to attend when he came to Northwestern when I was going there. I would not forget the interview and Q&A session.
I love this man’s mind and how it works. I admire anyone who makes as much sense as he does in these nonsensical times that we are in. Definitely my favorite book author.
This interview confirms the meaning of the tittle “A Song of Ice and Fire”, this is about Jon and the threat from the north and Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons from the East. This is their story.
Well every character has equal importance in the story .in a leaked conversation of George with his publisher he said main characters of his novel are Tyrion Jon dany bran and Arya.In this interview he means that a song of ice and fire means ice (others) which are coming from North and dany with Dragons coming from meeren (fire) .George have previously said that a song of ice and fire is not a one man's story
I'm so immersed in this series I will literally read a chapter, take a youtube break, and watch one of these interviews during my break then feel motivated to read another chapter. and so on and so forth. i haven't thiught about anything else in days.
And that’s it ladies and gentlemen... the peripheral threats ARE the most important ones; from the horses mouth no less. Part of the reason I feel D&D so totally messed up this last season of GOT.
Your channel is amazing! Thanks a lot for these interviews, it's a great source of information and entertainment regarding this gigantic universe of George Martin. And no one better to listen to about the creation than the creator himself! Keep it up!
He needs to finish his book. People say In his “blog” he doesn’t like being asked about his book but he’s guaranteed millions of dollars in sales. Not that doesn’t mean he can’t take is time but still.
This finally proves to all those people that George also thought that the fight for the iron throne was petty, and that the real threat was from the white walkers (and Dany). So why kill the white walkers (and Dany, but more the white walkers) so easily? Literally 1 episode. they couldn't even kill Samwell - how dangerous could they possibly have been? Such a rushed and disappointing ending
Yep! I mean it's been established already that D&D just wanted to be done with GOT and rushed the ending. They were offered money for 10 seasons. Initially they the show would only be 7. Then they caved and did 8.
No wait...I need a little help here, we got Ned Cat Jon Arya Sansa Bran Tyrion Cersei Jaime Theon Aeron Asha Victarion Arianne Areo Quentyn Samwell Dany Barristan Melisandre Davos Jon Conington Arys oakheart Brienne And they're 24 If we add the 5 prologues and the two epilogues ( though I usually don't think them as povs ) we reach 31. Am I missing something ????
In hindsight hearing him describe it this way seems like a dead giveaway that Dany is an antagonist along with The Others/The Night King. She has depth as a POV character but ultimately she’s a looming threat to the 7 kingdoms.
He shouldn't be too worried about those outside threats that threaten us all, like the others. According to the show, they aren't too difficult to deal with.
Its not really a video about "How" he manages that many characters, but rather WHY he created so many of them. edit: The title of this video before was "How does George RR Martin manages so many characters?".
And to keep track of every single character smh the beauty about his writing is that you get so immersed in the side characters you are left wanting more yearning more .
GRRM doesnt forget and thank god for that. so looking forward for these books.. take ya time g.. i know youre not gonna do us wrong so take your time 😭
He wrote himself into a corner with how many side stories there are. This is a major reason as to why he may never finish the story. Tolkien told a masterful epic story that focused on only the most important aspects. George has spent so much time on details not needed to tell the story. He should have saved some of these sideplots for novelettes published after ASOIAF.
What is crazy is that he still writing those side things, like the fire and blood that he wrote, which he says he has a second he is writing. Also, I think his answer in the interview pretty much sums it up. You can't tell the entire story of WW2 from one perspective. Yeah, and you also can't tell the entire 'complete' story of WW2 in a 5 book trilogy. You could in fact write an entire 5 book trilogy on WW2 from the perspective of a single person. He definitely bit off more than he could chew.
4:19 "People being so consumed by their petty struggles for power within the 7 Kingdoms, within King's Landing (...) that they're blind to the much greater and more dangerous threats that are happening far away on the periphery of their kingdoms" Note that he says "periphery" instead of "up North", and after having just pointed out Daenerys and her dragons... she has always supposed to be a threat to the 7 Kingdoms
he's so fucking interesting, i could listen to him talk all day .. drawing inspiration from WW2, hundred years war, war of roses with environmental issues so seamlessly and entertainingly, what a brilliant MIND!
His books and The One Piece Manga have so much in common, as far as the structure to the story goes. There are so many different stories doing on at the same time and they intertwine in someway. And even when you are not following a main character there is always something happening in the background so the world itself feels alive. It is remarkable.
I'm writing an action-suspense story current day into the future...He just hit the nail on the head about politicians using global climate change as a political football. Also listening to Fire and Blood on audio...So many characters to keep up with. Film scripts are a different animal than novels and cannot be written with so many characters...The audience would be lost, confused and would tune out.
Well, kinda. The third person he uses is super narrowly focused on the thoughts and senses of the character. It's as close to first person as third person gets.
And here it is, Game of thrones was about the petty struggles of the politics of the 7 kingdoms all while 2 major threats grow and set their sights on the 7 kingdoms. As I and many other people have said since day 1, it is abundantly clear this is what the story is about and yet there are people that swear the story is about purely politics and the White walkers/ others were an after thought. How can people miss this detail? I suppose that is the point of the story, some people miss the bigger picture. "But the title of the show is Game of thrones! Not Game of White Walkers"!!!! Are these people dense or something? Season 8 was a sorry end to its two major story lines because it was rushed and the white walkers ended up not being anything of consequence. We should have had an ending of apocalyptic or near apocalyptic proportions from the white walkers and a properly paced out cautionary tale of the corruption power brings from Daenarys. Instead we got a rushed mess when her personality suddenly flipped and the white walkers went for a evening stroll past the wall and didn't make it to the morning.
You do realize that the walkers or others will be dealt with in Winds of Winter and then Dany will be dealt with in A dream of spring. The only difference will be minor characters and more detail as there will be about 1000 pages per book...possibly more to end the story
I would love to have seen a great winter retreat of all the lords and men of the north to the south like Napoleons retreat from Russia. And instead of generic all out large good v evil battle to determine its fate, a great sacrifice is made for a pact with the others or something.
if im wrong then tell what's right but I feel like more characters can explore and expand the world and the story a lot more like if its a small story, then 1 or 2 characters, but if you got this massive complex world, then you gotta need more than 10 or 20 to explore it all, it just makes the story a lot bigger.
I regret watching the shows before reading the books though I am writing through them right now and trying to let my imagination do the work in making out what Westeros would look like had I not seen the show. It's so easy to get lost in his writing (in a good way).
People will probably accept more in the books, since hopefully it will have more story added to the whole mad queen event and not just the simply rushed bit in the series finale.
Actually in the book it is more onvious and will make 100% more sense than the show(awkward staring and burning evil people doesnt count as burning children for fun, the Mad King madness was not due to just him being evil and cruel but him having a severe case of paranoia being worsen by Varys whispering to him that even his son wanted to betray him). For the insane path of Dany, her wont go off with like a click of the finger(or some bells) but by either an increasing paranoia of everything due to being betrayed multiple times, false propaganda that would make be seen as the evil incarnate or by just loosing herself to impossible plane of existences and no longer being able to rule due to traumatic events. From all the Targaryen that gone mad, none just became mad for no reason, in fact, theres lots of proof that none of them were really mad except the mad king which was more due to a paranoic king being filled with more paranoia by his close aid.
GRRM literally says she is the title of ASOIAF. Going mad will not gonna happen Danny is antithesis of her ancestors she uses her dragons for sake of dragons while Valerians only used against slavers

@@michaeltrumph121 nah m8, as long as he shows a pattern/path of Dany becoming the Mad Queen I think it's fine. Also he's established that when Targaryens are born "it's a coin flip". D&D still suck though
Michael Trumph no he didnt he gave them super brief spark notes please dont comment about the ending of the books if theyre not out or even written you dumb fuck.
@@michaeltrumph121 the only reason it was shit was because of the journey of us getting there. The red wedding is shit writing if you butcher the character building and actions and plotting because it becomes a shock just for shock rather than a story building moment that trajects the characters to do the things they do and afterward leaving you wondering 'what now' in a satisfying way instead of saying 'that was pointless'.
@Atlas Rise I sweated...from my eyes of course.
The interviewer looks like he could be Jimmy kimmels brother
Except he’s tremendously less obnoxious than Kimmel
Damn!
Johnny Bravo dude be rude now
Or one of Baldwin brothers
I love listening to interviews of George RR Martin, he's so interesting.
Game of thrones sparked my imagination again. I’m going to start my Novel soon.
Stannis is the one true King and will crush the bastard of Bolton
...Okay.
H H i just started watching im on episode 4 season 1, i think this Ned Stark guy is great hopefully he ends up on the iron throne after season 8
Ryan M he does sorry
@@Ryan-yo9go Well one of these two characters is still alive in the books, sooo...
Don't you call him that! Never call him bastard!
Even if he never finishes the series I am so thankful for the world and story he has created even unfinished I am utterly obsessed with it
Seven Blessings to you!
An interviewer who doesn't interrupt 🙏
He can write so many characters because he kills them off!😂😆
Love your books!Love Loved the GOT. Series I can't wait to see what you come up with in the future!!Keep up the good work. Devoted fan 😊

He seems like such a cool, down-to-earth kind of guy. Really easy to understand, whatever he's talking about. I can, (and apparently have been,) listen to these clips all day. 👍
"I'm biting off more than I can chew!" Yeah that's me too! I'm writing my own fanfiction and the family has grown pretty extensively.
Where can I find your work? :D
That last answer was so not expected. It shows the ultimate brilliance of this man.
4:12 He says threats - meaning more than one. It was never just about stopping The Others.
Yes.. song of ice and fire is about daenerys and jon snow
insert shocked pichachu face
Well every character has equal importance in the story .in a leaked conversation of George with his publisher he said main characters of his novel are Tyrion Jon dany bran and Arya.In this interview he means that a song of ice and fire means ice (others) which are coming from North and dany with Dragons coming from meeren (fire) .George have previously said that a song of ice and fire is not a one man's story
@@alphagamer9505 there was people who thought that Jon was the song of ice and fire, which this interview confirms it's not.
This man deserves respect and fantastic credit.
Great interview and interviewer excellent video.
I'm so immersed in this series I will literally read a chapter, take a youtube break, and watch one of these interviews during my break then feel motivated to read another chapter. and so on and so forth. i haven't thiught about anything else in days.
Not to make extra work for you but could you add the date of these interviews?
I imagine less people would click when they realise this is from 2012.
I was thinking 2015. I still don't care, I like to hear RR Martin talk about GOT.
George is a true Mastermind. Only a Mastermind can envision multiple points of view at the same time. In great detail.
He's actually honest when he says he may have gone overboard with the multiple characters/stories. Makes sense given his Winds Of Winter struggle.
And that’s it ladies and gentlemen... the peripheral threats ARE the most important ones; from the horses mouth no less. Part of the reason I feel D&D so totally messed up this last season of GOT.
amazing interview I was looking for this thank you very much
"having thrown the balls in the air, I do feel compelled to keep on juggling them"
just wow... that's a great sentence
With so many characters I just hope he brings each thread to a conclusion
Awesome answer on viewpoint characters.
Wish I could have dinner with George or have some drinks and just chat it up.
Thanks for this channel!
0:08 the first and last time that I'm gonna hear a genuine laugh from the george lol
Your channel is amazing! Thanks a lot for these interviews, it's a great source of information and entertainment regarding this gigantic universe of George Martin. And no one better to listen to about the creation than the creator himself! Keep it up!
ASOIAF is one of the only series where I can list the top 100 characters, and still feel I missed out on a lot of great characters
He needs to finish his book. People say In his “blog” he doesn’t like being asked about his book but he’s guaranteed millions of dollars in sales. Not that doesn’t mean he can’t take is time but still.
the author has an assistant to complete the book. I think he has completed his last two books but is still in the process
It's so weird seeing David Schuster interview Martin... Huge fan of them both
Such an interesting video, this guy is a legend
This finally proves to all those people that George also thought that the fight for the iron throne was petty, and that the real threat was from the white walkers (and Dany). So why kill the white walkers (and Dany, but more the white walkers) so easily? Literally 1 episode. they couldn't even kill Samwell - how dangerous could they possibly have been? Such a rushed and disappointing ending
Yep! I mean it's been established already that D&D just wanted to be done with GOT and rushed the ending. They were offered money for 10 seasons. Initially they the show would only be 7. Then they caved and did 8.
No wait...I need a little help here, we got
Ned
Cat
Jon
Arya
Sansa
Bran
Tyrion
Cersei
Jaime
Theon
Aeron
Asha
Victarion
Arianne
Areo
Quentyn
Samwell
Dany
Barristan
Melisandre
Davos
Jon Conington
Arys oakheart
Brienne
And they're 24
If we add the 5 prologues and the two epilogues ( though I usually don't think them as povs ) we reach 31.
Am I missing something ????
Love you sir RR martin. You are the best writer to me.
In hindsight hearing him describe it this way seems like a dead giveaway that Dany is an antagonist along with The Others/The Night King. She has depth as a POV character but ultimately she’s a looming threat to the 7 kingdoms.
exactly.
The interviewer is like Jimmy Kimmel’s long lost brother
He shouldn't be too worried about those outside threats that threaten us all, like the others. According to the show, they aren't too difficult to deal with.
It’s a simple answer for George on how he juggles so many character povs… he slowly kills them off.
Its not really a video about "How" he manages that many characters, but rather WHY he created so many of them.
edit: The title of this video before was "How does George RR Martin manages so many characters?".
Oohh shut upppp
He does answer the titular question though. He makes lots of characters because he needs multiple points of view in order to show what he wants.
@@Haiiro87 no, he writes POV so so he can excuse all the inconsistencies.
Loving Fire and Blood! Can’t get enough of Westeros! Long Live GRRM!
What a legend
And to keep track of every single character smh the beauty about his writing is that you get so immersed in the side characters you are left wanting more yearning more .
For a second I thought that the interviewer was a clean shaven Jimmy Kimmel
4:19 "People being so consumed by their petty struggles for power within the 7 Kingdoms, within King's Landing (...) that they're blind to the much greater and more dangerous threats that are happening far away on the periphery of their kingdoms"
Note that he says "periphery" instead of "up North", and after having just pointed out Daenerys and her dragons... she has always supposed to be a threat to the 7 Kingdoms
George once said that people often interpret way too much into every single word he says. I think this comment is a good example of this
Exactly...threats...plural...no misinterpretation possible
he's so fucking interesting, i could listen to him talk all day .. drawing inspiration from WW2, hundred years war, war of roses with environmental issues so seamlessly and entertainingly, what a brilliant MIND!
Genius
His books and The One Piece Manga have so much in common, as far as the structure to the story goes. There are so many different stories doing on at the same time and they intertwine in someway. And even when you are not following a main character there is always something happening in the background so the world itself feels alive. It is remarkable.
Nice to see a fellow one piece + asoiaf fan
@@craz5634 A fellow Nakama I see 🤝🏽
This is why the Song of Ice and Fire will never be finished. It's become a juggernaut that even he can't get to the end of it.
Come on man please winds of winter!!!!
I really really wanna have a conversation with this guy
I'm writing an action-suspense story current day into the future...He just hit the nail on the head about politicians using global climate change as a political football. Also listening to Fire and Blood on audio...So many characters to keep up with. Film scripts are a different animal than novels and cannot be written with so many characters...The audience would be lost, confused and would tune out.
he literally gives you the vision of his ending here and D and D still made it underwhelming lol, and they fucking knew the ending..
4:19 makes me think so much about what's going on right now with politics, while climate change and the coronavirus becoming worse and worse
When I read each chapter is told from the POV of the character, I assumed it was told from a 1st person pov depending on whos chapter it was
Well, kinda. The third person he uses is super narrowly focused on the thoughts and senses of the character. It's as close to first person as third person gets.
I could listen to GRRM talk for days
JRR Tolkien: hold my silmarils.
I regret watching the shows before reading the books though I am writing through them right now and trying to let my imagination do the work in making out what Westeros would look like had I not seen the show.
It's so easy to get lost in his writing (in a good way).
"So many characters."
*Laughs in Malazan*
I like it how he refers to Daenerys as a threat here. It's gonna happen in the books as well folks, danyfans will cry in shock
I’d kill to have a mind like him
Never have to manage characters if you don't write any books *taps forehead*
"I forget real people immediately"
"Oh, so you're gonna forget my name later, huh." The thought reflected on the interviewer's face.
He takes time to write his books for a reason
Really? Did you like the last two books, the shitty last two that were the only ones to be published in 18 years.. and ppl still think his judgement is good? Lol. His insecurity reeks from this video.
@@doxasophosmoros Writing books ain't easy
He created too many storylines in the last books. So he is struggling what to do with them and to tie them properly.
The interviewer refers to the many conflicts and events in George's books as "King's Landing".
