M. Shawn "Clown" Crahan of Iowa metal band Slipknot was on hand Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Dayton Oaks campground in support of anti-bullying activist Kirk Smalley of Stand for the Silent.
Slipknot was my outlet throughout my middle and high school years with all the anger I had dealing with bullies and douchebags. Now looking back at it, I've become a stronger individual to fight back whoever is trying to bring me down. Thank you Slipknot for being there for me when I had no one to talk to and your music was my outlet for all the anger I had inside.

It's not terrible and some of them have talent, but they lack the certain image that bands back in the day had that oozed charisma. I mean bands like Slipknot, Korn, Marilyn Manson, and Rob Zombie felt alive and like their own creation; now it's too much of the same. I don't even really listen to the radio anymore, but when I do I feel compelled to thrown in a CD. Back then it wasn't like that with them or Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. Of course it's partly nostalgia talking, but someone should breathe life back into the mainstream music scene.
ShadowFoxZorua I'm glad it's no longer a major part of the mainstream music scene, now they're exactly where they need to be, with those that they've touched and they've helped get through the darkest times in their lives, I'm glad I can still go out in my now out of date jncos and kikwears, my ball chain wallet chain and my KoRn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot or Fear Factory shirts and be completely comfortable in my skin it's taken so many years and finally at 28 I'm comfortable with myself after these guys have helped me through the bullying, the teasing, the profiling, the violence towards me and the ridicule, now I can say fuck the world and let it burn because I am who I am and the rest can go fuck themselves.

I was bullied like hell at school. I would consider high school some of the worst years in my life but I heard it could have been worse, as there are schools that have worse bullying. I was attacked verbally by unbelievably sharp tongued idiots, threatened and beaten a couple of times. So of course I obviously had a lot of rage built up, where I can go far as saying Slipknot helped me release all that frustration I locked in myself. Keeping it sealed is unhealthy and fortunately I discovered them. Clown understands how it feels and appreciate what he said in the video.
Awww I'm sorry :( I know what bullying is like, it happened to me too where I was ganged up on. But you know, some people have low self-esteem! Especially when you're a teenager. And a lot of times when you have low self-esteem, you might like to find a flaw in someone else and use that to your advantage like someone else is worse than you, or you might like to point that flaw out to that person and make them feel bad about it, or make another person laugh by putting someone else down! And it's really ignorant I mean come on if you have low self-esteem don't take it out on another person! Do something about it! Talk to a doctor or something!

It was rough to be a metal head in a school in Miami where 98% was hiphop wanabe gangstas thanks God he made me a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than your normal thug. Had to protect my fellow maggots. Now I have pains everywhere and neck problems for all that head banging and mosh pits when I was younger. Worth it!

Like I tell a buddy who is also a metal head: If you like this music and understand it, it makes perfect sense. If you don't it likely sounds like total chaos. Slipknot is total devastation. Seeing them live is like being able to witness a Supernova and live to tell about it. Respect.
And people say metal's the devil's music. I love the amount of love I see from the members of Slipknot for the art, for the people, for everything. It's great.

I just love the Slipknot family. Feeling alone, isolated, different from everyone else and singled out because of it, I feel like I have some sort of belonging and family being a maggot. And people still think that Slipknot's nothing more than noise, screaming and aggressive pointless lyrics. They have no idea.
Bullying sucks. I've been bullied my entire life, because I'm quiet, awkward, and just don't fit in. I've always tried so hard to fit in with the crowd, then high school came and I was like "wait, how is this benefitting me?" And now, I'm trying to be who I want to be, not a copy. I've even come out to my parents as transgender. It's made me more confident and brave.

I was viciously bullied and now my bandmates and myself are on stages at some of the best venues in my state and we're due to play in 3 states in 2024 Never stop believing in yourself. I met Slipknot back in 2005 and they told me to chase my dream and go for it. I NEVER gave up because my heroes wouldn't. I am 32 years old today and Envoys from Taunton MA is now playing The Worcester Palladium on a regular basis and we're aiming to move to the next level. Slipknot saved my life and gave me a new one. "Gently my mind escapes to a relaxing world of pleasure. A pleasure that could take my mind off the reality of my life. My past life. Life as I know it now" Gently is my favorite song because it perfectly exemplifies what this band always was to me and continues to be to this day. My escape from this world.
I'm glad Clown really passionately wants to make a change for people who are or have been bullied. He is one of the first and founding members of Slipknot, and i believe was first to wear cover-alls and a mask which is the Slipknot trademark. I myself have been bullied for my short/small size all throughout grade school and always fought these bullies. Now i'm a pretty good height and size and wouldn't even think of bullying someone..!
Ive been bullied for a month for listening to slipknot and other bands like suicide silence , bullet for my valentine , a7x etc etc I used to listen to mainstream music till i listended to slipknot and other bands i was called self cutter , emo when i got piercings etc but my friends supported me though and im greatful to have loads of freinds to support people

My 'fuck 'em' advice was something I told him to do mainly because some people can just not care... I envy those people. I got through most of it pretending not to care and laugh and joke which people ended up liking so I became the clown but they say behind the clowns masks there are many tears. Trust me I agree with you one hundred percent. i was suicidal at a young age because of bullying and domestic violence (against me), and i would have died without anyone ever telling me that they loved me or cared for me if it wasn't a failed attempt, and i just want to say that this is absolutly the best thing you can do for someone that is suicidal, talking to them comes in at a very close second. Little did i know that i would grow up to be loved by most people i meet and turned into a pretty good musician aswell, so i guess in the end my hardship gave me character and something to say, which i can't be mad about but i only have myself to thank for that. When I was in school, my nickname was Scary Mary or Emily Rose because I liked Slipknot and they thought I looked like the girl from The Exorcist movies. They also use to annoy me with silly questions like if I listen to Slipknot in a cave or sacrifice lambs on the weekend, just so dumb. -__- But Ive experienced WAY WORSE than that like being called weird and retarded for not talking much and Ive had food thrown at me, footballs kicked at me, things thrown in my hair and my voice made fun of.
Well I've never been bullied and I thank God for that but I love how slipknot speaks for people who have a hard time speaking up for themselves it's kind of a medium to helping them out in a way. Again like I said I've never been bullied but I am a major maggot and love everything slipknot does.

He was in a band with Joey. Also in Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat he is the guitarist. He mixed all of that disk samplers, besides being the author of the samplers that are heard in the 4 disks later

But if you just admit you do no one can say anything about you because you agree that you are what you are and if they don't like it then that's their problem. I knew Ty when he was still alive, and we was really good friends! We was still in 6th grade before he took his life. It was definitely a life changing day when I found out he did what he did. He ALWAYS had root beer and beef jerky on him all the time lol. All he really ever wanted to talk about was hunting and baseball, and we talked all the time about it lol. All this time I never would have thought that an Iconic figure (in my opinion) like Clown would ever become friends with somebody from the small town of Perkins, Ok. Its really funny cause my history teacher looks alot like clown. Still miss Ty to this day, and we would be juniors in highschool together right now if he was still with us. Now hes upstairs probably hanging with paul, Randy, and Dime! R.I.P buddy!

Please don't take this as an attack as it isn't mean as a supercilious assumption as to your opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own, but the bullies I'VE come into contact with are not only insecure, but deeply disturbed...they just don't show it all the time. In fact, to actually back your point, one of THE biggest bullies I knew in HS was a popular, seemingly secure, intelligent (fuck the SAT's lol) varsity baseball player. Later on, after HS, he stalked and nearly killed an ex gf. So you can never be too sure. Secure? Nah...in my book, anyone who takes pleasure at the pain and degradation of others is not adjusted nor secure and spiritually enlightened, in any way, shape or form.... ...but to each their own-opinion and theory.

Slipknot are indeed one of the greatest bands in the world. The sheer aggression and emotion in their music isn't promoting violence and self-harm. It's just by making music about these things people can express their emotions in a healthy and effective way. Especially in songs like Disasterpiece, the raw violent lyrics in that song will calm me down whenever I am angry as fuck. Thank you Shawn. Thank you Slipknot.
Corey told a story on that was put on here how the members fought the fans of Mushroom head after they threw stuff on the stage at them. You would expect Jim, Mick, and Clown to be in the front fighting. I would expect Jim to be neat. On the video of his equipment it was very neat and boy he had a lot of sound stage stuff on his garage. It just goes to show that sometimes when someone like Paul dies you have to look inward and not go down the path to destruction that Paul sadly went down.

Funny you say that right after I found out Paul Gray died I actually had a dream that several years later (2015ish) Slipknot went back on tour after a hiatus and introduced JASON NEWSTED as the new bassist...now I know for a fact this isn't going to happen but it was kinda cool in the dream to 'see' Jason give off this vibe with Slipknot that he gave 'tallica in the late 80s-early 90s. I don't think Slipknot's becoming Metallica but they are both great bands I frequently listen to =)

Thank you slipknot for being there for me. I went to a christian school in the des moines area, and i was bullied like crazy! I was called a satanist cause i listened to slipknot. Im not there anymore, but i still hav PTSD from that. But slipknot has helped me through hell and back. Clown is a great guy. never met him, but ik he cares. And also, at the end how he said to let people know you love them, cause you dont know what theyre going thru... I respect him so much for that. I am the same way. I'd rather tell someone i love them, and save their life, than to never say it and see people die. Sorry i have bad typing, im typing fast lol

Gently is my favorite song because it perfectly exemplifies what this band always was to me and continues to be to this day. My escape from this world.
I'm glad Clown really passionately wants to make a change for people who are or have been bullied. He is one of the first and founding members of Slipknot, and i believe was first to wear cover-alls and a mask which is the Slipknot trademark. I myself have been bullied for my short/small size all throughout grade school and always fought these bullies. Now i'm a pretty good height and size and wouldn't even think of bullying someone..!

I used to listen to mainstream music till i listended to slipknot and other bands i was called self cutter , emo when i got piercings etc but my friends supported me though and im greatful to have loads of freinds to support people

DimerNL Same here man I have serious anxiety and a 2 days ago have been put on anti-depressants (ironic you reply 2 days after I've been put on them) I'm 16. My 'fuck 'em' advice was something I told him to do mainly because some people can just not care... I envy those people. I got through most of it pretending not to care and laugh and joke which people ended up liking so I became the clown but they say behind the clowns masks there are many tears. Trust me I agree with you one hundred percent. I just wanted him and everybody to know that even though I don't know who you are and have never met you I support you as we are all going through life together.

i was suicidal at a young age because of bullying and domestic violence (against me), and i would have died without anyone ever telling me that they loved me or cared for me if it wasn't a failed attempt, and i just want to say that this is absolutly the best thing you can do for someone that is suicidal, talking to them comes in at a very close second. Little did i know that i would grow up to be loved by most people i meet and turned into a pretty good musician aswell, so i guess in the end my hardship gave me character and something to say, which i can't be mad about but i only have myself to thank for that.
So to whom ever is struggling in life; stay strong and keep your head up because you will make it through it some day.

This is pretty interesting to watch back when i was a teenager and even before that in my younger years I had a terrible awful life up until about 23 or so, and even to this day still can't get over some of the things that happened but what I can say is that bands like Slipknot, Korn, Disturbed, Metallica so on were the only things there for me at the time I will always stay true to these bands and forever listen to their music until the day I pass hope everyone out in the UA-cam community and elsewhere are doing fine I know their are alot of people struggling with hard times but it's only temporary push through it my friends. -Dracula
When I was in school, my nickname was Scary Mary or Emily Rose because I liked Slipknot and they thought I looked like the girl from The Exorcist movies. They also use to annoy me with silly questions like if I listen to Slipknot in a cave or sacrifice lambs on the weekend, just so dumb. -__- But Ive experienced WAY WORSE than that like being called weird and retarded for not talking much and Ive had food thrown at me, footballs kicked at me, things thrown in my hair and my voice made fun of.
I like how hes got a regular suburban type vehicle, i do too. Makes the humbleness more apparent

Well I've never been bullied and I thank God for that but I love how slipknot speaks for people who have a hard time speaking up for themselves it's kind of a medium to helping them out in a way. Again like I said I've never been bullied but I am a major maggot and love everything slipknot does.
and this is the reason i love clown, he is very aggressive and insane when he plays his music and then off the stage he is a family man and a good hearted person same goes towards the whole band.

I didn't use to be a Clown fan. I stuck mostly to Joey and Corey, but man, listening to this guy speak, and following his Facebook has really gave me respect for him.
He was in a band with Joey. Also in Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat he is the guitarist.
He mixed all of that disk samplers, besides being the author of the samplers that are heard in the 4 disks later

That's awesome. I hate it when people bully someone for who they are. I've never really been bullied but I've gotten judged for the stuff I listen to like slipknot and the things I like. But if you just admit you do no one can say anything about you because you agree that you are what you are and if they don't like it then that's their problem. No one is gonna make fun of you for who you are of you admit it. They will make fun of you if you try to be who they want you to be

I knew Ty when he was still alive, and we was really good friends! We was still in 6th grade before he took his life. It was definitely a life changing day when I found out he did what he did. He ALWAYS had root beer and beef jerky on him all the time lol. All he really ever wanted to talk about was hunting and baseball, and we talked all the time about it lol. All this time I never would have thought that an Iconic figure (in my opinion) like Clown would ever become friends with somebody from the small town of Perkins, Ok. Its really funny cause my history teacher looks alot like clown. Still miss Ty to this day, and we would be juniors in highschool together right now if he was still with us. Now hes upstairs probably hanging with paul, Randy, and Dime! R.I.P buddy!

people pick on others because they're insecure, unhappy, miserable people. End of story. They're so incredibly unhappy w/themselves that they take their turmoil out on others and have to mean, nasty, miserable assholes. When they bully, they're really just showing the world how shallow and cruel and pathetic they are.
,,,not really, the bad thing is most are actually very secure and comfortable with who they are, they also have plenty of friends like them, they just don't understand anything that's not an exact duplicate of what they are, and it gives them divine power to harass others, especially with an audience around.
Solid State When you are young sometimes you just don't know any better. Not to justify the behavior an I was never a bully myself. But shit happens man, When the bully dudes get older I'm sure most of them regret doing the things they did. Its just going to happen and is apart of this life. Like racism but that's a whole other story.

Solid State I'm sorry but i have to disagree. They may seem to be secure but sometimes a false reality is a false reality. and if you've "never" bullied anyone yourself...so are false assumptions. Please don't take this as an attack as it isn't mean as a supercilious assumption as to your opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own, but the bullies I'VE come into contact with are not only insecure, but deeply disturbed...they just don't show it all the time.
In fact, to actually back your point, one of THE biggest bullies I knew in HS was a popular, seemingly secure, intelligent (fuck the SAT's lol) varsity baseball player. Later on, after HS, he stalked and nearly killed an ex gf. So you can never be too sure.
Secure? Nah...in my book, anyone who takes pleasure at the pain and degradation of others is not adjusted nor secure and spiritually enlightened, in any way, shape or form....
...but to each their own-opinion and theory.

I was out cast in high school . Written off as a distraction. At the end of the day most of my high school “ friends “ are dead or moved on with life . Yet I am still out casted and have 0 friends I can always rely on music to for get about the crappy world

Slipknot are indeed one of the greatest bands in the world. The sheer aggression and emotion in their music isn't promoting violence and self-harm. It's just by making music about these things people can express their emotions in a healthy and effective way. Especially in songs like Disasterpiece, the raw violent lyrics in that song will calm me down whenever I am angry as fuck. Thank you Shawn. Thank you Slipknot.

Corey told a story on that was put on here how the members fought the fans of Mushroom head after they threw stuff on the stage at them. You would expect Jim, Mick, and Clown to be in the front fighting. I would expect Jim to be neat. On the video of his equipment it was very neat and boy he had a lot of sound stage stuff on his garage. It just goes to show that sometimes when someone like Paul dies you have to look inward and not go down the path to destruction that Paul sadly went down.

Funny you say that right after I found out Paul Gray died I actually had a dream that several years later (2015ish) Slipknot went back on tour after a hiatus and introduced JASON NEWSTED as the new bassist...now I know for a fact this isn't going to happen but it was kinda cool in the dream to 'see' Jason give off this vibe with Slipknot that he gave 'tallica in the late 80s-early 90s.
I don't think Slipknot's becoming Metallica but they are both great bands I frequently listen to =)

Thank you slipknot for being there for me. I went to a christian school in the des moines area, and i was bullied like crazy! I was called a satanist cause i listened to slipknot. Im not there anymore, but i still hav PTSD from that. But slipknot has helped me through hell and back. Clown is a great guy. never met him, but ik he cares.
And also, at the end how he said to let people know you love them, cause you dont know what theyre going thru... I respect him so much for that. I am the same way. I'd rather tell someone i love them, and save their life, than to never say it and see people die.
