    I am a tech user for years. Never posted a comment on youtube. I'm not into this. But today I had to. You should get hired to make reviews. VERY IMPRESSIVE. Less than 9min and the range goes from newbie users to advanced tips that matters, all backed up with serious tests. Never seen a condensed review so good all categories put together ! Thank you

    Thank you Tech Guy for such an honest review! My favorite line: "Is the $300 tablet better than the $80 one? Sure. Especially if paid $300 for it and now need a confirmation that you made the right decision." Ha!... but in all seriousness, it was really helpful to see these tablets in action and now I feel like I can make an informed decision! Thanks again!

    tbh I'd like to see how newer graphics tablets from other companies stack up. I've heard they've improved but I'd love to see it broken down by someone who knows what they're doing.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 7 років тому

      I guess only the touch of the surface has improved, while the drawing quality remains the same, and might not be any less than a Wacom Intuos Pro.

    • @crimsama2451
      @crimsama2451 7 років тому

      What i meant was like a Huion or monoprice tablet compared to the wacom intuos and bamboo.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 7 років тому +2

      Crimson Lust Yeah. I guess the strokes those tablets can produce are as good as a Wacom tablet. The only difference is how the touch feels. I've used a tablet that the stylus is super springy, which might be helpful for in some situation, but mostly just doesn't feel like a real pen.
      The reason I choose Wacom over other tablets back when I get one is, the stylus doesn't require battery, and it feels more like paper when I'm drawing on it, rather than that the Wacom one has higher spec or something.
      If you are getting a pen screen then, well, Huion is way cheaper than Wacom. But, for entry level "off-screen" tablets, I would consider it worthwhile to spend the extra money on a Wacom one.

    • @curecure7128
      @curecure7128 7 років тому +5

      Like you I think it would have been much more interesting if the comparison was between Wacom and Huion..
      Now, I don't really have a problem with selling a graphics tablet with good build quality for an expensive price, but it's absolutely inexcusable to try to sell the wireless adapter separately like if the market is still the same from a decade ago and include bare minimum specs just to differentiate your products (pro vs non-pro)..
      Take Huion's Giano tablet for example, it is priced for 160 dollars
      The build quality is excellent!
      The active area is Huge!
      The touch sensitivity is double the bamboo (non-Pro intuos)
      12 keys
      Runs on wireless (the battery lasts for 40 hours per charge and the charging is simply plug the usb while drawing)
      And the only downside is that the pen has a rechargeable battery which lasts for 400 hours of actual drawing before you need to recharge
      it's simply astonishing to me that Wacom is still asking 199 dollars for the "medium" sized bamboo tablet, it's downright insane to go for it instead of Huion tablets (I've also heard of Ugee tablets, but the most well known with good support and drivers is Huion).
      There are plenty of reviews in youtube for the Giano graphics tablet if you're interested, I would much love to recommend Wacom tablet but the asking price vs the included specs just can't be justified with the current market.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 7 років тому +6

      Cure Cure Yeah, Wacom tablet surely is quite expensive, but, at least Bamboo CTL-471 is still the smallest tablet available. I guess the size is also just a personal choice. I'm fine with small tablet since it's easier to draw long strokes with.
      As for wireless module, well, I'd say, Wacom seems to be quite "greedy" at selling peripherals... A stylus of CTL-471 would cost $25 while the tablet itself is just $50. And the strangest thing is, well, a pack of 5 spring nibs would cost $15... I know it's not easy to build, but... really, that expensive? So does the wireless module... Well, at least I don't have to use that.

    This is all fine and I applaud you for taking the time to lay down some first person experience for someone less experienced, but you seem to have completely omitted some details that may not make a difference to you, but certainly make a huge difference to a lot of others.
    You have covered pen pressure as something that doesn't make a huge difference to you, even though you don't do much 2D painting. I can imagine someone doing serious digital painting in something like Corel Painter would have a different opinion on the matter. Input lag is a huge deal and you tested it correctly...
    On the other hand, you completely ignored the digitizer resolution, or "movement resolution", the DPI or LPI number associated with the digitizer. I am a 2D artist/painter for a video game company, and I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun M (CTH-670) at work, and a Wacom Intuos3 A5 (PT-630) at home. Both have similar drawing surface sizes and comparable 1024 pressure level styluses with similar lag... However, the older Intuos can resolve 5080 DPI, while the Bamboo does 2540 DPI. The difference, to a painter, is literally NIGHT AND DAY. The amount of detail I can squeeze out of my Intuos is extraordinary, adn painting at work feels like a chore in comparison, even though it is perfectly serviceable for the task at hand.
    Again, I didn't mean to fault your findings, just mention some things that are definitely worth considering in terms of deciding on a proper tablet for personal use.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому

      My opinion is that that is also a marketing trick. 2540 lpi multiplied by 5.3inches of the M Intuos height makes resolution of 13462 individual positions on that height. Considering that our screens are much less than that all extra resolution is unused, but it looks good in specs sheet. That is why I think it is an overkill. I did not notice the difference, but where I notice the difference is with different tablet surfaces. I feel I loose resolution when working on non-smooth surface, as I can move the pen over the tablet surface from a microscopic valley, over a bump, to another valley, and that is the minimum resolution of the tablet. Also, if I draw on my 13 inch tabletPC with 1080p resolution, I have only that 1080/8inch resolution, which is 135 dpi. No matter what the resolution is, I cannot position cursor on any area smaller than a pixel. I also cannot make any motion as small as 1px at that resolution. Try getting another surface cover for your Fun M and see if there is any difference.

    •  7 років тому

      I don't see what the screen resolution has to do with the resolution of the digitizer. More lines per inch on the digitizer picks up more subtle details of each pen stroke no matter what the resolution or the zoom factor on the screen is. I agree with you on the loss of detail due to the roughness of the surface, but both the Intuos and the Bamboo have a smooth drawing sheet, and since the Intuos is older, it even has more scratches and rough patches. It still feels twice as precise. Again - this is all from a standpoint of a digital painter and photographer/retoucher. I have a friend who paints in Painter and she loves to paint "from the elbow"... so she got the Intuos3 A3 a few years ago because nothing less satisfied her style. It's all highly subjective and relative.

    • @FoxGhost7
      @FoxGhost7 7 років тому

      This completely disregards that the stylus and the canvas don't interact on the display resolution level. And thank god or curves drawn at full zoom on a 20MP+ canvas would look absolutely horrible.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому

      It is highly subjective, as you said. Sometimes I would use the pro and without thinking take cheap bamboo the next time and not even notice the difference. I am almost certain that the drive intereacts in screen coordinate space, so whateve the resoulution, the tablet API tranlates the input in screen coordinates. Software has to interpolate anyway. Digitizer works as 133 updates per second, so if you draw 1330 px in 1 second you would have a circle every 10 px, but you don't, exactly because the software interpolates. It also interpolates if you use 10% zoom, relative to screen space.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому

      Please read my previous reply. The software interpolates. It is easy to test: map large area of the tablet to small screen area, then zoom out a lot, and then draw a nice 1cm circular stroke (which will be 3-4 pixels in screen space). Now zoom in to 100%: If it works in screen space, the circle will be crappy, if it works at tablet resolution, you will have nice circle.

    Great review. Funny and very informative. Im looking to get a tablet for drawing for less than 200, it looks like it doesnt really matter which I choose because the difference is small. What do you think is the best tablet for the money? Like a 100 dollar tablet?

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому +1

      Thanks. If I did not have any, and I needed one today, I would buy Intuos Art small. But I have not used a tablet in a few months, until yesterday. I draw direcly on screen of x360 spectre tabletPC when I need to sketch something, but that pen for tablet requires a battery, and it ran out, so my 7yo wacom came to the rescue. In truth, it costs them probably less than $10 to make that $85 tablet, but I would still buy it because it is one of those things that last forever and there is no maintenance.

    I'm curious about what you think of drawing on tablet PCs vs using a drawing tablet. I'm looking to upgrade my laptop to a tablet PC and have been considering the HP Spectre x360. Is the quality and drawing experience the same? I read and saw that the Spectre had some jittering when drawing with slow strokes.

      I don't think that using a stylus from a different tablet would work but I'm not sure. You can probably pick one up on Amazon for pretty cheap. I suggest doing a little research on the matter first but I'm pretty sure that most Wacom pens are not cross compatible. I just looked on Amazon but they don't currently sell that particular stylus. It may be worth just considering the possibility of an upgrade. It all depends on your price range. I mean sure you can find the stylus for your tablet on Ebay from between 18-25 dollars but that's half of the price of an upgrade. The exact same tablet goes for about $30-$50 these days depending on where you shop but that's really not worth it for the sake of a lost pen when a Wacom CTL-471 costs around 54 GBP. I've used a CTL-471 before and had no problems with it. There are a lot of options to consider before you decide. Keep me updated =)

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому +1

      I don't use blender so I do not know how the support is for tablets. I cannot work in max with a tablet because I cannot move anything precisely and I miss wheel and 3rd mouse button. Texture painting works well in zbrush so it is definitely good investment, and the small size is fine.

    • @jendabekCZ
      @jendabekCZ 7 років тому +1

      Thank you for your reply. What do you think about importance of having more / better placed buttons with Intuos Pro? Would you consider it as a big advantage for working with 3D / Photoshop? I am still not sure it is worth the double price of Pen&Touch for my purposes, especially when I can use a keyboard instead of tablet buttons (but no radial button for sure).

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому +4

      Since I started with an old Bamboo that did not have any buttons, I got used to just using the keyboard buttons. Once I started using tablets with buttons and touch sliders I did not switch as I would still have the need for more buttons than the tablet has, and would still need to move my hand to keyboard from time to time. At any week I use 2-3 different tablets, connected to different computers, so it would be also inconvenient to have different key combinations on each. I can switch to a different tablet with no adjustment period and no need to setup my own custom key mappings. I do not consider those buttons a big advantage, but some people may be faster with all those buttons. I did watch a few illustrators, texture painters, zbrush artists, and all but one used keyboard.

    Thank you for clarifying this. It is as I suspected, more bells and whistles to jack up the price of the intuos over the bamboo. I picked up my 6 x 9 bamboo fun at the pawn shop for 40 bucks and I think it's just dandy. 2000+ levels of sensitivity is probably unnecessary. I particularly liked your comment about cognitive disonence. Also, your sculptural work is amazing!

    the bamboo line is just a refresh of the graphire tablet line from Wacom. The intuos line is sort of a light version of the actual intuos small, medium and large family.
    Just got the large intuos pro 2015/2016 model used from ebay for cheap, is nice though the touch gestures are a nice feature they can get in the way at times.
    My first tablet was a graphire 4, upgraded to a intuos 3 small(Which I use to this day and has taken many drops amd a small doda spill), then a intuos 4 small ( gave it to a friend as I didnt like it much), then upgraded to a 12wx cintiq (gifted it to my nephew once I got the next upgrade), Got a used 21ux 2nd gen and then the intuos pro large (both I am using to this day), I also got the wireless accessory to make the intuos wireless.

    I'm looking for a tablet to use in online meetings. I need something thats as intuitive to use as drawing/writing on a piece of paper, something with an experience that is as close to writing on the screen as possible. What would be your suggestion ?

    Great video. I just bought an older One by Wacom tablet and for me is enough this tablet. Before i buy it i compare it with Intuos Art, thinking that Intuos will make my workflow better, but after seeing this video i'm not worried about the specs of my old tablet wich was much cheaper.

    awesome video Tech guy! have u ever tried Huion tablets? I was looking at there new 1060 plus and an intros pro medium today. I'll have them on Friday.. and I wanted to compare them. I probably won't notice the difference. but $83 vs $350. I'm pretty sure I know which one is gonna be returned!

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому

      Thanks. I did not try those, but it is a different technology. When comparing, take a look at hover distance, precise motion (move stylus a millimeter left-right, back and forth), range between minimum and maximum pressure. Those are the areas that you may see biggest difference.

    11 to 13 ms lag is not much. in fact you can't expect a computer input device to have much less. it is all the time it takes from input to screen output. and in fact for me that is good performance.

    Wagon does offer a lot of ripoff to it's customers but I will point out a difference you didn't cover from the pro to the normal intuos tablets. The pro has more sensors across the surface (even the small version the same surface size as the normal ones) and it is noticeable for me as a digital painter given I get smoother strokes on Photoshop. For the other tablets I strongly recommend Paint Tool Sai given it's beautiful brush stabilization that works great for any tablet.

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  7 років тому

      If you have a way for me to test that, let me know. If you earn your bread with the tablet and spend hours a day using it, there is no reason to try to save a few dollars, as most people will never know the difference. I looked into Paint Tool Sai... is that a driver that sits between wacom and OS and does the stabilization in all software? I just see that it does not support HDPI screens, so I cannot use it on laptop or 4K screens.

    I have practically no input lag from my CTH470 (an old model discontinued from the wacom store)
    I think a large factor has to do with computer speeds and display resolution.
    Its seamless when I am working from my laptop but when I project on a larger monitor the lag is about 0.1s, very noticeable
    Have you tried using these tablets on other rigs?

    • @Tech-Guy

      I have only used 24 and 22inch cintiqs. But I can already tell you there is less parallax with Surface Studio as it has thinner glass; Also Cintiqs have very low brightness screens. Higher resolution of Surface Studio matters a lot. I would definitely rather get a Surface Studio.

    I use wacom bamboo and the pen is super ugly,. first the weight is super light, when i draw my stroke become wiggle2x because of lightness,, 2nd no curve that make my fingers comfortable to handle,,. and 3rd its a bit thicker like I use big crayons like kids,. curse that wacom bamboo.,.

    Very informative review! Especially on the latency. I had a few questions. I've been looking into getting a new tablet and there are a few good deals on some older Intuos models. My only problem with the Intuos 3 is that they stopped supporting the drivers. Should I still go with it or go with the newer pro or even whatever they come out with since I assume they will update the line with the new cintiqs having 8000+ pressure levels? Is the surface a lot worse? Also you mentioned screen size to tablet size with 15x10 being the best. Is there no point in getting the large? Thank you very much for your review!

      Go to device manager and under Tablets or HID devices look if there is your tablet. If there is, right click, and remove all mentions of tablet, pen pen input, wacom, unplug it and then restart and install bamboo driver. Also try different USB ports

    Intuos 3 tablet - this tablet has worked for me for almost 10 years and just recently broke and had to be retired. Excellent tablet. I even replaced the pen tip once or twice during that time just because I wanted to see if there was a difference, overall the thing didn't require any replacement (unlike nowadays it seems). I'm curious whether or not newer wacoms perform that long.
    Your video made me wonder should I strive to buy the Pro tablet or stick with the cheaper ones as I don't think I need tilt and the bamboo I temporarily use now serves me well. Now I'm really confused.

    Honestly one of the most amazing and helpful review for selecting a graphic tablet! I'm a graphic design student from India and a bit confused about which tablet to buy. According to you which tablet would be a better pick, the Wacom Intuos Art Small or the Wacom One Medium (Somewhat like the Bamboo with only two hot keys provided in the stylus)? There isn't much price difference between the two. So should I go for the one with the bigger size, or the one with touch and more hot keys?

  • @augustcelineiii946

    What did you mean the Intuos 3 doesn't have the touch? Like you can't use your finger and just use it like a track pad? Or is the latency much more noticable than newer models? I recently got an intuos 3 second hand for free from a friend, but I don't have the pen for it... Could probably get a pen for 60 bucks or so (again second hand) from an ebay seller, but I want to know if using the Intuos 3 is worth it...

    • @Tech-Guy
      @Tech-Guy  6 років тому

      The two Intuos 3 I have/used do not have a touch at all. Not sure if there are versions of Intuos 3 that have it as option. If you don't need touch, then I'd say it is worth paying for stylus only to use it

  • @psd.3144

    if you do professional art you will actually appreciate that pressure sensitivity and tilt support when inking, blending, and getting line weight just how you want it, even more so if you are only doing inking all day. The pen is what determines most of the lag since the pro pen 2 is noticeably more precise in movements and more sensitive with 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity. The goal of each model tier is just to make it feel more like natural drawing and painting.
    If you just do some drawing on the side but aren't serious about making a career out of it the art is fine. For doing photo editing the art is also ok, but you will probably benefit from wireless functions of the pro since you aren't usually doing quick strokes for that.
