People are not understanding what is happening here. BREACH, not break. Too much water in too short a period of time means the water is threatening to overflow the flood gates. The dam is not in danger of breaking. The money sent to keep Putin from stealing Ukraine did not make it rain.
Thank goodness for these dams! People that reside down stream are aware of the dangers when they moved there. The Corp of Engineers will release the water as needed to protect the dam. Keep up the good work you do protecting our inland waters!
The bypass gates underwater are open. Water level is very high. Can't release too much at once. They need to give time to people down stream time to evacuate before they open the main gates.
Cement failure isn't imminent. It's the earthen part right next to it that will fail. Water cresting the earth rapidly errodes and moves more as it flows causing a cascade effect of destruction on the earthen portion leaving the cement portion untouched. No danger standing up there.

This dam is doing it's job perfectly, and no, the nuke plant is in no danger at all. This is what Duke built this dam to do, make power, control flooding. This is a routine flood gate opening. It's a beautiful area, but expensive, to live in. I haven't been back there in a long time, it was good to see parts of the Lake area again.

The officials at dams are responsible for keeping up with weather ahead of time and releasing water typically days beforehand to account for the amount of water that is expected to fill the dam back up again. Releasing too much ahead of time and then having to let it fill back up some is far, far better than not releasing any or enough and trying to cheat a dam break at the last minute. You shouldn't have to 'evacuate' anyone downstream if you were releasing water properly in a reasonable and controlled release days ahead of time before a major weather event. Somebody needs to be fired.

As someone who lives less than 5 miles from this dam I can tell you, no one was right under it. Yes we were south of it but elevated above the river. Furthermore, this was a controlled release of a lake that is 50sq miles and still 2ft below max capacity and they only opened 1 of 11 flood gates. No one was in any danger and there are no concerns of this dam failing. But I can also tell you it was an amazing sight to see!!!

In this instance a "Breach" means the water might rise above the spillways gates The problem is the Lake behind the Dam is full and ready to overtop the spillways but the river below the Dam is also already full. I don't know how often releases occur here, but they are probably monitoring the erosion and turbulence from the flow coming out of the turbines and the spillway flow combining. It looks like a bit of sediment flowing on the left side at 28:29, but that could be reflections, too.

The deal is that Duke Energy, which basically owns the water rights in this area is slow about releasing the water at the dam gradually,it’s been an issue in this area for decades…I live literally about 5 miles away from the Cowans Ford dam…
In general one does not wish to make sudden changes to the waters flow rate. If at all possible is should be increased slowly, allowing the flow rate to increase to accommodate the increased water volume. Then when stabilized to increase water volume again (by opening yet another gate), and wait for flow rate to finish increasing downstream. To open it up all at once can tempt a wall of water surging downstream, doing real harm. Is that what they are doing? I dunno... is just a generality.

@carlagalois3191 haven't heard that before. I know there's the Marshall steam station up on hwy 150 that uses coal. But the one on hwy 73 is the Duke nuclear station.
This is Cowan's Ford dam and yes, Mc Guire is the big group of building you can get a few glimpses of. But they aren't allowed to film it for security reasons. Source- I work there

They need to open a couple spillways to release some of that backed up water river below looks like it could handle I ? Weird that the guys are jus standing there looking at it are they having issues with opting the gates where is the emergency overflow . Not much information in this video !
