"Heat Wave" is a 1963 song written by the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team. It was first made popular by the Motown vocal group Martha and the Vandellas.[1] Released as a 45 rpm single on July 9, 1963, on the Motown subsidiary Gordy label, it hit number one on the Billboard Hot R&B chart-where it stayed for four weeks-and peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was recorded 12 years later by rock vocalist Linda Ronstadt on her Platinum-selling 1975 album Prisoner in Disguise. Ronstadt's version of the song was released as a single in September 1975, reaching number 5 in Billboard, 4 in Cash Box, and 6 in Record World. In 2010, British musician Phil Collins spent a single week (number 28) on the Billboard Adult Contemporary listing with his retooling of the song-a smooth combination of both versions

Andrew Gold did the arrangement on this song. He played the drums, guitar, sythesizers, and background vocals along with Kenny Edwards who played bass. Andrew and Kenny collaborated with Linda on other songs. Their background vocal work was unique and easily recognizable. RIP: Andrew and Kenny. Thanx so much.

To me, Linda's singing is far superior to the original. Her tone is better and she gave the song an edge with her punchy/fiery delivery. Great guitar solo that adds so much more flavor compared to the original. Plus the backing band and backing vocals are far superior to the original as well. This is in top 3 Linda Ronstadt songs.

Linda Ronstadt's cover of "Blue Bayou" made that song hers. And her cover of The Rolling Stone's "Tumbling Dice" almost made that song hers too. But this song will always belong to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, however much I like the way Ronstadt belts out some of the verses. For something completely different on the subject of heat waves, check out Mildred Bailey "Heat Wave" from 1933 -- "She started a heat wave \ By letting her seat wave..."

This is my favorite version of this song. Probably not a popular opinion and probably because I knew this version first. The original is great but for me doesn't have anything that makes it stand out from all the other "girl group" sounds of that time period. The girl group sound seemed quite interchangeable at least in vocal stylings. I like the rock edge (and country to a degree) that Linda's vocals bring to the track.

    Well, huh.
    The background singers, they’re men.
Which is something that you almost never hear. Unless your singing in a large group of vocalists like the Temptations or your name is Gladys Knight.
Furthermore, the way the background singers are using their voices is unusual. On those rare occasions when the background vocalist are men they will often sing as high tenors or in falsetto. Linda Ronstadt’s supporting vocalist are singing noticeably lower than she is creating a sound that is distinct, unusual and captivating.
I don’t think I’ve heard this song since way, WAY back in the day. Honestly, I really didn’t even remember it existed. This was like a song that would’ve been played by the school bus driver on the way home.
    Thanks. This was fun.

Linda used male backup singers a lot. Remember, her backup band used to be The Eagles. Often when Linda has done cover songs her versions become the standard by which all others are compared. Her versions are often more famous than the original versions.

I prefer the Martha & Vandellas version too, but I still LOVE Linda's voice, and I do love that she covered this. (Also, Dancing In The Street is Martha's biggest hit, but I would take Heat Wave over ANY of them any day!)

Linda’s version is arranged to be more rock n roll than Motown. You have to accept it on those terms as different or not.

She once did a great duet with Aaron Neville titled "When Something is Wrong with My Baby". There's also one she did with James Ingram, "Somewhere Out There", for the soundtrack of the film "An American Tail".

In the early days of her Career, she covered alot of R & B Songs from Little Anthony, Claudine Clark and was next to TG Sheppard, the only White Act who appeared on Motown 25. She and Smokey did "Ooh Baby Baby" that she covered as well as "Tracks Of My Tears". She's also done Big Band, and Country. One of the best performances that she did was on a Tribute Album to Ella Fitzgerald where she sang "Miss Otis Regrets She's Unable To Lunch Madam".
