I couldn't have stumbled accross your videos at a better time. I'm getting ready to buy a spare S52 for my car to rebuild and eventually swap with my current motor and you've done as much take-apart as I'm looking to do. Thank you so much!
this video series has been immeasurably valuable to me as I'm working on my forged internals build. I just got to the removal of the crankshaft on my teardown, and I couldn't figure out how to loosen that harmonic balancer nut so I came back. Thanks for the hard work man!
Heyyy about that harmonic balancer, do you happen to have any idea if i have to swap it out if i make the stroker build on my m52 with m54b30 internals?
@@deltacharlieecho4732 mine is EUDM m52b25 non tu. Is its stock balancer enough to absorb vibrations created by an m54b30 rotating assembly? Or should i swap it aswell?
@@norphes3865 the m52 non tu still has the crank sensor teeth on the outside. I believe all m54 cranks have their sensor teeth on the inside so you will need to use the m52 balancer.
@@deltacharlieecho4732 Ok understood. I still don't know much about the matter so i'll have to research if a harmonic balancer for smaller internals will be sufficient for the vibrations caused by a bigger crank etc... That was very helpful, thanks a lot stranger 👋
These videos are awesome! I'm never gonna take a motor apart, yet it's so interesting watching you do it. Plus your voice and the music is so relaxing haha. Keep up the good work man!
I wish I had the space time and all the tools, to take apart my m52 engine, I’m having misfires, I have changed ignition coil spark plugs and MAF sensor, somewhat stuck on what it is. I want to take the engine part due to the fact that my dad didn’t do any mechanical work, I want to give it a new life and also clean.
Hello, I have a timing question. Is there a timing concern regarding the two sprockets that goes onto the crankshaft? one for the oil pump and one for the timing chain. The two sprockets that goes on the crankshaft has a dowl indent so the sprocket can only go in one way. Do they need to be installed or fit in a specific way to not mess up the timing on top?
so just like an outboard, the crank and flywheel are tapered, just being "smushed" together by the flywheel nut, or is it not tapered on these and that giant key takes the brunt of the torque?
Good day. O teally enjoyed your videos. Thank u for sharing. What i would like to ask is when assembling the connnecting tods to the cranshaft. Which direction do they face. Please advise
I can't remember off the top of my head, but I remember that I just googled a pic of the engine without an oil pan to get the rough idea of the orientation . Sorry for the late reply!
Is it possible to remove the timing case off without messing up alignment? Meaning i can remove all the pulleys and pop it off with no issues while the car is on the ground? Thanks!
That depends, usually you only need to change the tensioners. But if the wear looks significant it's not a bad idea to replace them, especially if the engine has a ton of miles on it (175k+)
Well hopefully we will see something fun so you can achieve that BIG BOOST (#albertobigboostreference)! ;) Also may i ask what camera you are using to record and what software you are editing in? Was planning to start a little build channel for my E36 now during the winter peroid when im trowing in the M50B28 and boosting it :)
+Robin Calén haha thanks man! That's the goal, but as for a camera I started out in my first two videos using my iPhone, afterwards I upgraded to a canon g7x!
Had my chains marked/ ziptied until I took the cover off and I think the chain skipped a tooth. How much of a hassle is that going to be if any? I'll post a pic on Instagram for you to see if ya need
+photojnt shouldn't be too much of a hassle, after taking every thing apart, bottom end timing stricly relys on the crank at TDC, then the rest is mainly lining the timing blocks up with the cams, and orienting the sprockets so that the arrows point in the correct directions (all which I'll be doing in the future)
Never done that personally, but in my opinion the mechanical system is simplified without a vanos unit. You’ll still need to lock camshaft but the sprockets holding the chain shouldn’t be more difficult to remove than the same system set up with a vanos assembly.
Being mindful of the timing chain orientation just makes reassembly easier. Timing from scratch is not difficult, but takes some more tech experience to ensure everything is lined up TDC. Thank you! I’m glad you like the videos 😌
all the sprockets have a specific orientation they must be installed and locked down too at TDC. I believe my buddy Quinn from M3nace (another channel) has a useful video that explains it further! I've yet to break down the process myself.
I'm really struggling to remove the Timing Case on my M52. I loosened all the 10mm bolts but the gear that sits just behind the 'Harmonic Balancer Unit' on the Cranshaft won't budge an inch. Any tips?
I’m having a little bit of trouble visualizing your progress. Do u have an Instagram? That way we can message each other and u can snap a pic of how far along you’re at
Great Job Pawinn. Got a tip for the build; Take a view at pazi88 's channel. He has got lot of tips at building boosted M50/52 's . Also big camshaft knowhow. Regards from holland.

Really excited to see where this goes!
@pawinning, you're the man!! I have always been afraid to crack open an engine but I'm gaining confidence by watching your videos. Thanks! #E34iT ftw
Great vid - thx for good work! I'm currently re-building two M50 single-vanos for a race car so this was very helpful in deciding on DIY or not.
I just wait to se how you rebulid it with the new parts! Good stuff here!
Like the videos great content can't wait to tear apart my m50 e34 will definitely be using your videos for a reference
so glad you made these videos , can't wait to start on my 95 325I

So you using a M52TU crankshaft on the M50 block?
Hope you kept track of which main caps went where. If not, you are going to need a line bore.
+Matt Mauro yes I did keep track!
+Matt Mauro I'll probably get a line bore done regardless because I'm replacing the crankshaft. Taking no risks for poor tolerances
Ευχαριστώ πολύ.

Yes you should be able to. The timing case has alignment pins 👍
Do you know if the exhaust chain has any timing marks with the sprocket it sits on. I’m having a timing issue with my e36
Yeah!!!
If the exhaust chain comes off the sprocket, how do you make sure it goes back on correctly?
Do the plastic guides ever need to be replaced?
That depends, usually you only need to change the tensioners. But if the wear looks significant it's not a bad idea to replace them, especially if the engine has a ton of miles on it (175k+)
Mine actually broke so I recommend it lol
ok that solution is actually really f*cking good! Love it! What can we expect for internals? rods and pistons or only rods? :)
+Robin Calén that will be revealed when my wallet says so 😂

Pawinning sweet! Good to hear. Thanks again!
what screws you use to put the engine on that mount ?
(Y) when you will install everything show all the bolts ! Cause..i kinda forgot where all goes :))
+Bogdan Ciobanu making these videos is helping me keep track of all the bolts 😂
how does a m50b25nv engines cams timing chain come off with no vanos?

Question - why do we want to maintain the timing chain orientation so much?
P.S - totally love your videos and editing techniques.

Pawinning Makes sense. Do the sprockets only go on the end of the cams in a certain way? I.E is there a pin or key? Thanks for the reply :-)
