It is something horrific with Ferrari management in mid-2010s. Looking how Iceman and Seb was demotivated after that stint, and how Vettel is flourished again in proper conditions. Kimi is excellent and stable driver (and invaluable for his feedback), and sometimes shows a sparks of his old self, but I hope that his next life chapter woul reignite him again.

It'll be a shame to see him no longer in the paddock but I do think Kimi's time is up.
I think Kimi is going to announce his retirement at Monza and Alfa will announce Bottas/de Vries for 2022.

Kimi lost the 2005 championship because of lack of reliability in his car; 2 retirements and 1 DNF against 1 of Alonso. I don't recall an Alonso+Renault dominance. It was the opposite, the MP4-20 was so dominant (due to the pace of in-season development thanks to the Thursdays practice) that it is said that Renault thought the championship was over by Hungary (race 13/19). McLaren had a poor start, which allowed Renault to manage the difference they've made during the first half of the season. That's my recollection of events.

McLaren finished 5th during 2004, which allowed them access to Thursday practice. The objective of it was to allow midfield teams to catch up to the front of the field. McLaren produced such a car for 2005, that many found it unfair advantage. 10 wins out of 19 venues and 17 podiums to Renault's 8 wins and 17 podiums.

Kimi was always meant to be second fiddle at Ferrari, and team orders dictated Vettel to be ahead - especially when actually in competition with Hamilton. He may only have had one win in 102 appearances during his second stint with the Scuderia, but he also had 24 podiums and finished 4th or better in the championship in 3 of the 5 seasons during his second stint. That's definitely not a decline - it's a team player. He also did reasonably well his first year at Alfa, matching his then career worst ranking of 12th from his 2014 season at Ferrari. There's no reason he wouldn't have been higher in 2020 if the power unit wasn't sheer garbage. That said, he consistently fought with the works Ferrari drivers during that well.
No doubt he has declined somewhat, but if he was in an Alpine like Alonso he'd still be in the top 10.

Heartbreaking enough for Heidfeld, 'cause he's relate with McLaren, and being their junior driver, but in 2002, instead pick him, McLaren pick Kimi.

Alfa just has a very awful car. Kimi doesn't like driving terrible cars. He will not adapt driving a car thats now slower than Williams at this point. Which is why in 2014 was the first time we've seen Kimi struggle massively. In other years like 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009. The cars he drove in those seasons were still competitive for points and podiums for as long as his car doesn't break on him. Which is why he still did good in those seasons. Thats the difference between Alonso and Kimi. One can make terrible cars look fast, the other can't do anything with a terrible car. Another factor is his age. We've seen Michael Schumacher's decline when he went to Mercedes, although Alonso is an exception. The older you get, the less reflexes your body gets and combine it with a terrible car, it doesn't really help him alot.

Give him a good car that suits his driving style then you will see him flourish. Give him a shit car expect the man to be demotivated. Sad to see him retire.

Regarding Kimi's 2007 championship, I believe that either Alonso or Hamilton could've easily won't the championship. I believe that part of the Spygate compromise was that neither McLaren driver could be champion that year. It would've been really unfair and also a big scandal that either of them would've clenched the title. That's 100% speculation. In fairness, Kimi should've been champion twice by then, if not by McLaren's own mistakes.
