Holy Shit!!
Man, this is seriously freaking awesome!
I have had an overwhelming personal obsession with Homme's Kyuss and early QOTSA guitar sounds shortly after revisiting the music nearly 6 years ago.
Given that Josh was notoriously protective over his tone back then?
You've done a killer job nailing that sound!
You can't see it, but I'm giving you a standing ovation (pun intended)
You've also just set me back financially for however much that Hamstead pedal is going to cost me!
lol!
I must have one now! Hahaha!
Congratulations on yet another fine video kind sir!
Cheers!
FUCK YES!
Buddy of mine saw Kyuss open for Metallica in the 90s and Josh was using 2 Ampeg 8x10's facing eachother and were at absolutely deafening volumes lol
😆
You are saying that as if deafening volume is something that should not be done
Ha yeah I saw this tour too. It was loud.
I've seen Josh and Nick do that with their cabs in early QOTSA live vids as well. I would much like to hear the story behind that. The Desert keeps it's secrets however.
@@EasyHeatthey were playing with frequencies
By facing your amps like that you are sort of killing certain frequencies while creating other frequencies for that crushing sound
But it sounds Muddy as fuck so won't recommend for every thingreally
Homme is a f@cking LEGEND. Dude is a true American original. He essentially invented an entire genre, then goes on to revolutionize rock with QOTSA. He has a sound all his own. He’s up there with the all-timers.
and created guitar scales lowkey
So true! All these flashy players but creating you’re own genre and unique sound🤯I’ll take that any day
Totally agree...the old songs are getting even better with age...
Homme wasn’t the only one coming up with the Stoner Rock thing back in the Early 90s. Matt Pike had started Sleep which, granted, some may consider a little heavier, but there were other bands coming on to the scene around that time and even before Kyuss. Fu Manchu began around 1985 (Brant Bjork of Kyuss played drums for them at one point). There were several others involved in the whole Desert Rock Scene, some that started before Kyuss. Fatso Jetson has/had a great lead guitar player named Mario Lalli that is well respected in those circles. There a great documentary called “Lo Sound Desert” you should check out. The fact of the matter is that it is extremely difficult to do something in rock n roll that is 100% original…not saying everyone directly copies someone else, but any given artist definitely has their influences.
Why is everyone forgetting Black Sabbath? Go listen to Sweet Leaf lol
Rock is rock, kyuss is mountain...
sorry but mountain is mountain..
Alec B. Lauris Kyuss Is kyuss
Kyuss is kyuss- mountain on the sun.... Voila...
Big mountain
Sounds like a caveman trying to describe Kyuss: "ooga booga. dis is rock. rock is rock. kyuss is mountain"
He also looks like josh homme during kyuss era
Holy smokes, this is sounds so close to the originals. Also your playing was insane.
Thanks dude!
Pretty good! The characteristics of each sound are definitely there, but as with every single "sound like Homme" video, I would reduce the gain by about 20-30%, possibly even more. A good chunk of the guitar sound you hear on any Kyuss album can actually be attributed to the bass. Especially on Blues for the Red Sun Homme and Oliveri occupy much of the same frequencies, never fighting for space though, always complementing each other and combining into this massive bottom end roar. Easy to spot on Green Machine for example when the bass solo kicks in, the guitar sounds slightly off and quite weak without backing.
Hurricane is my favorite kyuss track for that exact reason. You can hear the bass and guitar together.
Jesus I'm only a minute into the video but that Green Machine tone is godlike
Oh yeah. The beginning of Homme's sound. I was just jamming some Gardenia after seeing Lost In Vegas react to it, and now this....
Lost In Vegas, what's that?
@@LivingroomGearDemos Just one of the infinite react channels. They are pretty good for that type of thing though.
@@BockwinkleB They are the best reach channel imo
I got goose bumps when you did the one inch man intro bend. Nailed it dude. 👌
Tears in Heaven in the beginning 😅
I accidently managed to recreate this tone (kind of) using a clean-ish Blues Driver into a Turbo Rat. This way I get the fuzziness and the attack of the strings at the same time, and I get the "fuzzy and narrow" sound.
been waiting for this. Thank you!!!! Love all of the Kyuss/QOTSA content.
Man, i love Kyuss so much! Nailed the tone!
This video needs all the views! Your "Sound Like" videos are right on point and more people need to discover both you and Kyuss!
Definitely been waiting for this one for ages and you didn't disappoint! Fantastic video, you nailed it!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This sound has been a part of my life since the 90ties, sounds awesome mate..
nice job but 1994 Josh couldn't have dreamed about all this boutique gear
I didn’t know you did this video! This is by far my favourite stuff that homme was involved in..🤙🏻 so good man.
Nothing beats Demon cleaner. Nothing.
true
Lolwut..? That’s one of their weakest songs
@@theninthheart4736 riff is good
@@theninthheart4736the only bad kyuss song lmao
The real Kyuss tone is tubeworks rt head and/or jcm900 thru ampeg bass cabs. Nothing more than that
Yup through a 6x10 cab, I use my 8x10 cab for the same effect
Mids mids mids mids
Isn’t it also way cleaner than people think? Like the majority of the distortion comes from just cranking the amps?
He never used bass cabs in the studio. Ampeg V4 cabinets, which were 4x12s. The bass cab was used live.
@@lotuscorpseWhat was Josh using here? ua-cam.com/video/tFqUhh-TIt4/v-deo.html
I can see that only the one of those cabs is mic'd: isn't that a 4x12? I think it's too big for being a 4x10.
The 8x10/6x10 fridge (I'm not sure about that being an actual ampeg cab) put above them is just for scene, probably
Finally someone. Thank you so much xxx
Thanks for checking out!
My father handed me down his Tubeworks rt2100 combo a long time ago. I always loved the tone out of that amp. Been looking into into people who used similar amps and found KYUSS. Always like Josh's sound and the amp pretty much sounds exactly like this, no pedals needed.
Love the video ❤️ sadly it's too short, I'm curious how to nail the delay tones from Gardenia for example. Next please do sound like EODM 🤘
Nice man ! Sounds freakin great! Nailed It!
Thanks a ton!
Wow dude. You nailed that sound for sure. First time ever I see someone getting this close. Never done before. And gee, your guitar playing is perfect. All riffs give me goosebumps. Long live Kyuss.
Thanks Lars!
So nice ... thx for this amazing Video about one of the world's best band !!!
Any chance of seeing a video for bass sounds for Kyuss and QotSA? ✌️ great video also, goosebumps on the gardenia riff 🤘
Dude!! You killed it
Thanks!!
I love Kyuss and I loved this video.
Awsome!! Respect man 🤘🏻
Rock on!
Great Great tone!!!🤘🏽🤘🏽
heavy sound, loved Green Machine and Gardenia! 🤟
With a J-Ho-Approved shirt, too.
Great video! What setting were you using on the Subspace?
sounds great
Thanks!
My youtube recommendation really makes me happy 👌💥
Glad I’m recommended to someone at all :)
Yep! 🙌
Beautiful sounds from a beautiful man!!! 👏👏👏 homie.
Hope everyone is safe & well, talk soon brother.

Thanks, Aaron! You too!
The long awaited Kyuss video is finally here. It definitely sounds very similar but I have two questions regarding the room mic sound. First: Are you playing at low volume? I didn’t see any mention of an attenuator, so I would guess that would be a yes. My second question would be: how did you dialed/eq that sound? Or you recording and listening before on the computer/headphones until you found the right tones?
Hi! It’s pretty loud. Almost unbearable loud in the room. I didn’t use the room mic much at all, it was more to show how it sounded in the room. I dialled in the sound by recording and moving the mics after listening. Took some time since I don’t have a separate control room.
Living Room Gear Demos thanks for the reply. It seemed low volume, but maybe it’s the presence of low frequencies in the mic room that might have confused me. Thanks again and I look forward for more videos!
Yeah, the room mic wasn't intended to be used at all, so it's basically scratch audio for my camera.
Great vid, what's your bass setup here?
Cheers!
demon cleaner!!! soo good !!
Do you know which Kyuss songs used the Rotovibe because it says on google that Chris Homme used a Rotovibe pedal but not sure which Kyuss songs
Would love a How to Sound Like Earthless!!
That Gardenia tone is MEGA
Good stuff, man!
You make an uniq video here
Thanks!
YES YES YES YES !!!!!!
wow this tune is insane :o
That tone is insaaaaane.
in the menbraaaaain
@@LivingroomGearDemos 😂
Yeah, got the deep and rich sound pretty spot on! ANYBODY HELP - the Subspace pedal, it is hard to get and very expensive, I wondering what a cheaper and more accessible alternative might be?
Nailed it.
thanks!
never seen your channel before, subbed :)
Thanks and welcome!
T H A N K Y O U ! One of my favourite bands!
YES!!!
Nice video, cool examples, let me add that Kyus's sound its a complete whole, beyond instruments and playing, there is a deliberated natural intention of reflect the dessert, abrassive and infinite, all red, warm and hot, rusty, with oasis of pleasure inside a a long rough trip to unknown places, all this unique bands cames from a context , by looking on it you will comprehend many of the why and hows. Lucky for us, still there are some few people struggling to develop and own sounding. Regards.
So true what you say. Kyuss to me is like the sound of molten lava moving down the volcanoes on some mythical planet while the Sun is shining and the wind is blowing. Something like that.
Fet video! Hvilket strenger bruker du til Kyuss/Queens tingene?
Husker ikke helt. Jeg nevner det i queens-videoen
great tones man! what tuning is all this in?
C standard
Hey bro, great video as always! Thanks for putting in the work.
The room mic sounds were definitely much much closer. What string gauge were you using? Kyuss and early QOTSA sounds relied on some pretty thick Dunlops.
For live shows, Josh used to put a mic between two cabs. Give that a try ;) I know he did it for 1999 New Orleans on UA-cam.
Ps: nice hat.
I love the sound of c standard tuning but hate the slack on the strings.. drives me crazy. I almost need a longer scale guitar maybe?
Well, that's a pretty good sound - just lacking the oomph of saturated output transformers I guess. So, what you show us, is that you can play and that a distortion pedal, mic placement and then mixing those mics gives a close approximation to the Kyuss sound. Showing that it will sound awesome with just one nicely overdriven mid-heavy amp and some skills and that everything else is just a tad more complex and achieved by audio- recording- mixing-engineers :)))
Thanx for your effort - well done!
Is there any type of cheap/common drive or distortion pedal that might sounds similar to the to the subspace?
Drew Homme originally used an SD 1 I think
Yeah, the SD-1, but I think it's more dependent on a driven amp though. I'm always up for recommending a cheaper alternative, but in this case I can't come up with anything.
Amazing job, dude. Spot on. By the way, when you played Gardenia it sounded like you were running through a velcro fuzz in full distorted tone. Superb.
Here are a few suggestions:
The White Stripes (Icky Thumb, Dirty leaves and the dirty ground, Black Math, Little Cream Soda, You don't know what love is, 7 Nation Army)
Jack White solo (Lazaretto, 16 saltiness, Freedom at 21, Highball stepper)
The Raconteurs (Sunday driver, Consoles of the lonely, Now that you 're gone, Steady as she goes).
And don' t forget about the Dead Weather (I can't hear you, Level, Will there be enough water, Treat me like your mother).
CHEERS!!!
Yesss
Maybe this will be a stupid question but.....In what tunning are you playing??? I got it ,the pedals and amps but the tuning???
Standard C!
Where did you get from this glowing cactus? It's amazing
At a store called Clas Ohlson
how to set up equalizer for green machine?
What tuning and string gauge are you using
Gardenia sound is outstanding
Intererstingly I find the sound more fitting when it was reproduced on the mic room for some reason.
One inch man was so close... awesome video!! next time king gizard? ;)
Yes I believe so!
Song suggestions?
@@LivingroomGearDemos wow! Awesome!
@@LivingroomGearDemos hmm thats really hard, i love everything from their discography
@@LivingroomGearDemos Rattlesnake, Planet B, Sleep Drifter and anything off Infest the Rats
Oh my god Gardenia sounds near exact
What gauge strings are you using?
Are most of their library tuned down to C?
Thank you in advance
everything as far as I know
How underrated is the neck pick up nowadays… I could remove my bridge pickup just as a statement.. as I hardly never use it 😁
did you roll off the tone at all? I keep hearing that but don't really believe it's necessary
the eternal quest to try replicate very loud amps.
HELLO, which the string you use for this?
13-72 by Ernie Ball
4:21 "You can't upstroke yourself into toughness" ;)
Not a typical downstroke riff though ;)
@@LivingroomGearDemos Josh plays it all downstrokes haha i was quoting an interciew whwre he talks about this. Check out guitar moves with him its good! Good work tho buddy sounding great
@@fanieldox yip. Haha guitar moves interview is hilarious. He's clearly stoned for it.
Im having an anxiety attack, what is the song you're playing at 3:55? plsssss
Thumb
Yes yes yes
No one sounds like Kyuss.
I used to say that Karma to Burn sounded like AC/DC and Kyuss.
Sounds great. How much did this rig cost you overall? Friedman+Hamstead+pedal+Eastwood = really expensive. Over $5000?
I don’t know. I didn’t pay for everything, but I could have been clearer on what’s necessary and not. I guess the key here is the pedal. If you don’t want to replicate his rig completely though.
@@LivingroomGearDemos Did you already own the amps, or do you have them on loan from a store?
I own them. I payed a discounted price for the Hamstead. The Barecafed too. The Friedman I got for free.
@@LivingroomGearDemos Right on man. Do they give you a discount/freebies because of your channel or do you know people who work there?
Yes because of my channel. Bigger stuff like guitars and amps a basically on display for years, and a present in thousands of views. So it’s kind of a long term product placement.
thummbbbb awesome!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is the real desert tone!
😎
Holy fuckin shit Green Machine🔥
🍀🗜
What was the bass setup?
Same as in the Queens video, but I removed some gain and mids.
That's my dream guitar, here in Brazil it's impossible to find it in a reasonable price =/
Can i get this sound without the $600 pedal?
Cool video and some really nice tones! But i think to get even closer you would need to use a 4x12 cab or bass cab, with a 2x12 you get almost too mids. The Kyuss Josh tone is actually really scooped.
What is the amp eq?
Bass and treble at noon. No mids on my amp.
Just brought a cactus lamp on E Bay like the one you have.lol
How to sound like Kyuss.. Start with 10k of equipment.
Did the riffs justice 🤜🤛
Strengedim på den GP'en ? 12 eller 13?
13!
@@LivingroomGearDemos meget! Skal sette opp en Yamaha RS502T med 13 nå i dag tenkte jeg, for ca samme formål: tung ørken. Blir noe snillere med p90 enn med humbuckere, men tror det blir en deilig sound likevel.
How to look like Josh Homme
My original tone journey.
I like "Kyithhhppph "
Sounds like Tool please!
That is a cursed thumbnail with an Eastwood guitar and Josh homme 🤣
An eastwood? What?
