The part at 0:00 - 1:00 has to be the best fucking soundtrack in a video game. I've never played a game in which the music was so fitting. Nothing can describe the race of bloodthirsty, ruthless, savage aliens better than that track. Amazing stuff.
Terran demigod, lore enthusiast, writing and film fan: This music... It's like the most on point solo guitarist and bass player and keyboardist just reading all the emotions of every creature, soldier and dark templar AND all of us growing up with StarCraft, correctly and so on point, wailing away on his instrument, alone, in space. Amazing. So UNDERRATED
Starcraft 1 was much better at setting the tone of what you were doing. You were literally fighting alone in space for survival of your race. Failure isn't an option.
As someone who's first entry into not just this franchise, but RTS games in general, was StarCraft 2, I find StarCraft 1 to be dated from a gameplay perspective. Don't get me wrong, narratively speaking, SC1 is a far superior story, but between the janky pathfinding abilities of the AI, the fast paced ramping up of the difficulty mission after mission, and the fact that you can only control 12 units at a time, and I cannot get into it. As much as I appreciate the story in a video game, the gameplay has to be paramount, and in my opinion, SC1's gameplay has been superannuated completely by SC2. SC1 is better than SC2 from a narrative standpoint, but that just isn't enough for me.
The forced societal change and loss of Aiur may have been sad for the protoss, as signified by the Brood War exclusive track, but there's no underestimating how sad it realistically was for the zerg to lose the overmind and go feral which the exclusive track in the first half of this exhibits.
To think this masterpiece came out of the 90s, and was probably one of the first games ever to fully utilize the power of proper industrial music. Seriously this piece reminds me of Skinny Puppy's best work.
Blizzard used to be genius. I really miss the old blizzard. I consider myself lucky that I got to play starcraft at the age of six and grow up with it with how games are today anyway.
In my younghood, this theme make me so excited. I remember the pituitary gland scan in the Zerg character selection that was an Hydralisk. And by reading some books of Starcraft and Biology science, I understood that my excitment with this game and it's music was similar to the zerg Hydralisk excitment in battle. It is told that the zergs excitement in battle is just orgasmic haha! They are bloodthirsty and that makes them so happy :)
I still remember when I first try sc1 at 9 yr old, I didn't even know English language and as I saw the campaign selection I didn't hesitate at all to click on the hydralisk which was badass asf! The music and overminds voice was SHOCKING! It has been echoing in my head for years! I still use SC1 soundtrack when playing sc2 and I love the zerg 1 music in the HotS zerg map!
The first minute captured the essence of industrial rock, albeit very dark and heavily influenced by other genres, better than any industrial rock band ever did.
The beginning and the part from 5:00 is probably one of the best parts in SC music. And the great thing about them is they last so little, so you can't get tired from them. Although i would make them longer, i would do whole song out of the 5 minute part. So fucking EPIC i just can't stand it.
tiniracoon That was my favorite part when I was a kid. Fuck yeah. I always imagined Kerrigan becoming infested Kerrigan or just Zerg Evolution like spinning the sequences.
This seems needless to state due to its sheer greatness, but I love the melody from 7:05 - 8:37; the keyboard, guitar, and bass melodies complement each other perfectly, and most specifically the keyboard melody is so simple and yet creates such an eerie tension.
5:47 - 7:00 This part is very creepy, just imagine yourself as a marine out in the battlefield at night, feeling all alone, and any zerg can jump at you at any time...
You get exactly 2 seconds of warning before their on you Reason: them bursting from the ground, then they are all over you in 2 seconds from the dirt flying up
All i can see when hearing this part is inside any zerg structure or an infested command center while all the lights black out and im all alone trying to find a way to get the fuck out
I still liked it better when the Overmind was in control of the Zerg. Back then they were awesome overwhelming, flesh-tearing world eaters. Now they are just misunderstood creatures that are made out to be the whipping mule of the galaxy. Now I have to find a new favorite "great devourer".
Theodore Hodbor From the StarCraft 1 manual... *"The Overmind, while slowly expanding itself into the void of space, became aware of the mighty Xel’Naga world-ships hovering ominously above the skies of Zerus. The Xel’Naga, having kept a constant watch on the Overmind, were horrified to find that it had actually severed their psychic link, effectively hiding itself from their view. With its need to consume driving its minions into a lustful frenzy, the Overmind launched the now space-faring Zerg swarms at the unsuspecting Xel’Naga. The ancient race did what they could to stem the tide of the ever advancing Zerg onslaught, but in the end their efforts were in vain. Wave after wave of Zerg swarms hammered the reinforced hulls of the Xel’Naga’s ships with no signs of abatement. Within only a few hours the Zerg overran the defenses of their creators and laid waste to the Xel’Naga fleet."* This little paragraph shows just how badass the Overmind of SC1 was. The very first thing it did after gaining conciousness and self-awareness was destroy its own creators. The first Zerg rush in history.
Felamine Yeah it was awesome then, but then in Starcraft 2 it was "revealed" that it did all of this because it was corrupted by Amon, and that the Zerg didn't really want to do that.
Hi guys! Gosh the funny things we write when younger! Not quite yet the boss of a large corporation, still in middle management. I will report back in another 9 years! For now I play this in my ear phones when I need to concentrate, or miss the golden age of gaming.
As I listen to this I kinda feel like it follows a story. Act 1 The birth and rule of the OverMind 0:00 Act 2 The war with the Terrans 3:15 Act 3 The war with the Protoss 3:53 Act 4 Kerrigan's slow but steady take over of the Zerg 7:00
First time I played as Zerg, I loved it. I've always been a beast Terran player, but Zerg has always been my favorite. This music is one of the reasons. BREAK IT DOWN, DAGOTH!
First Zerg expantion mission sound recordings in the portuguese Brood War version, wich where in english aniway. I was quite mesmirised trying to find whose was that serpent-like voice, specially since the overmind was already dead
Sven Enzo ill have too look that one up again but I know the broodwar final zerg mission was very hard, the terran one where you have to capture the overmind wasnt as hard.
Peter Van well the broodwar one is by far the hardest SC mission, Omega is hard to beat if you don't know how to manage the early harass form the enemies XD.
Imagine a Zerg trying to hold a glass of water. Then start listening to this music, 7:05 onwards, and at the same time, imagine the zerg thinking "NEED THUMBS!". It starts to pustulate and morph, and after a minute or two, says to itself "EVOLUTION COMPLETE", while drinking a refreshing glass of water with the newformed thumbs on its pseudo-arms.
The music in 1 fit better with the game, now only the zerg ST fit in 2. Theres now an option to play SC1 music in 2, so yeah I think 1's music was better, but you are certainly entitled to your own opinion and i can respect that even if i dont agree with you.
***** I disagree, but i respect your opinion. Personally I love it for both nostalgia and knowing it was the most advanced music they had back then. I would rather have them make music simillar to the SC1 soundtrack, but they do have to keep with the times.
***** No. SC2's music just isn't as good as SC1's to me and it has nothing to do with nostalgia. For example, I played Diablo 1 for the first time about 3 years ago. I was 20+ at the time, so I had played a lot of games, and yet D1 has one of the best soundtracks for a game I've seen. I'm not really into technical stuff for music, but what I can say is that the vast majority of triple A titles these days have absolute crap music, including Blizzard titles, because they go for this "hollywood" experience. The music usually end up having no soul and feeling "fake", possibly because it goes through the hands of dozens of people and end up losing its purpose and conveying no emotion. The composers also tend to be super conservative and the music usually end up all sounding the same. Indie games usually have far better music, maybe because they have smaller teams or because they are more daring? See Transistor, Bastion, The Swapper... etc.
I love the heroic sound of the melody at 4:55. It suggests that the Zerg are a more sympathetic and neutral race than you might think, simply fighting for survival. Hearing my units die to the that music made a big impression on little me.
First Time I was ever stoned on weed I was watching my friend fight my brother as the zerg and it was a trip man. Then I'd play stoned as zerg and really be in the damn game.
+Brett Davis It's not really what makes them less scary, if, by say, they were to be in reality, sure, we know far and wide of them, but seeing one infront is terrifying enough, especially one that's nearly 20+ stories taller than you, stronger than you, faster than you, and sense you. It may be off topic, but I don't find anything 'Esoteric' about it, if you can abbreviate further for me to understand. | +a zergling, well, I kind of think you, in my opinion like the old skins of the Zerg than the SC2 skins, which is fine. their still alien eitherway from the alternate versions, but I quite find the SC2 skins adequate for the WoL and the other expansions up.
Starcraft 1 Zerg: Terrifying alien creatures, The Overmind, Cerebrates Starcraft 2 Zerg: Colorful dinosaurs,, An "alien" in high heels, Queens with boobs
and the storyline was way more unpredictable and dark. people would betray others just out of nowhere, there was a greater feeling of striving for something, and the the endings of the campaign episodes were quite uncertain (e.g. you destroy the overmind, but is everyone safe? kerrigan just annihilates anything in her path, but did she gain total dominance over everything?, etc.), while the sc2 campaigns were pretty straightforward in the way you did things. everything you see is quite expected beforehand as it is foreshadowed or simply told by the characters.
braxium Actually, you could see Kerrigan's betrayal of Raynor, Fenix and Mengsk coming a mile way. She wanted to get even with Mengsk for pretty much feeding her to the Zerg on Tarsonis and putting her through hell while she killed Fenix to spite the late Tassadar because Fenix was his best friend and because she saw him as a threat. Mengsk deserved to be doublecrossed for what he did on Tarsonis so my only complaint is that she didn't finish the job right then and there. If she had left Raynor and Fenix alone, I'd have lauded her as a hero right then and there. I'll admit though that I hadn't expected Kerrigan to have mind controlled the Matriarch even BEFORE the Protoss survivors of Aiur along with Zeratul made it to Shakuras, that was a BIG surprise for me.
braxium Because fuck Artanis and Zeratul, they didn't believe what Aldaris has said to them at the end of "The Insurgent" mission. Before Aldaris could say to them what happened to Raszagal (the Matriarch), he was instantly killed by Kerrigan. And yeah, I agree BW has the darkest storyline. Betrayal and deception everywhere.
jacko crave To be fair, Aldaris had helped the Conclave nearly get the entire Protoss race assimilated into the Zerg Swarm with their foolish hatred of the Dark Templar who were the only ones who could kill the Overmind and its Cerebrates plus their dumb pride resulted in Aiur falling to the Zerg so I can see why they'd be reluctant to listen to Aldaris when he's telling them something that goes against what they believe to be true.
I always link beginning (first part of the song) with Kerrigan's betrayal on Korhal, where she fully of her own will crossed the line and became irredeemable monster. Granted, they knew it was coming but probably not so fast. Also, death of Fenix and Raynor's despair.
Idk why, but playing with the Zerg in this game back in the early 2000s always gave me hunger... I'm not even kidding lol. These Zerg tracks really have a serious side effect of making me want to *DEVOUR.... CONSUME...* something. Guess if I had continued playing and listening to this, I would have ended up morbidly obese by now hah
In Omega, 24 Guardian/12 Devourer/36 Hydras/12 Ultras/12 Overlord and much lings in my hotkeys '-' Gerard's, Menghsk's and Artanis's bases are vaporazed kkk

| +a zergling, well, I kind of think you, in my opinion like the old skins of the Zerg than the SC2 skins, which is fine. their still alien eitherway from the alternate versions, but I quite find the SC2 skins adequate for the WoL and the other expansions up.
that dentist sound at the beginning always gave me chills
Starcraft 1 Zerg: Terrifying alien creatures, The Overmind, Cerebrates
Starcraft 2 Zerg: Colorful dinosaurs,, An "alien" in high heels, Queens with boobs
i read they removed the cerebrates because games gamesworkshop told them to do so
SC1 Protoss Zealots : tough guys, fighting zerg in melee combat. SC2 Zealots - clowns with coloured hair
I mean I wouldn't mind some alien queens with BOOBS
this
I miss brood war it seemed darker than all the sc especially the Zerg campaign
and the storyline was way more unpredictable and dark. people would betray others just out of nowhere, there was a greater feeling of striving for something, and the the endings of the campaign episodes were quite uncertain (e.g. you destroy the overmind, but is everyone safe? kerrigan just annihilates anything in her path, but did she gain total dominance over everything?, etc.), while the sc2 campaigns were pretty straightforward in the way you did things. everything you see is quite expected beforehand as it is foreshadowed or simply told by the characters.
braxium Actually, you could see Kerrigan's betrayal of Raynor, Fenix and Mengsk coming a mile way.
The matriarch part was very unexpected indeed
braxium Because fuck Artanis and Zeratul, they didn't believe what Aldaris has said to them at the end of "The Insurgent" mission.
I love that they actually put the sound of a dental drill into the song.
SPAWN MORE OVERLORDS !!!! .....WE REQUIERE MORE MINERALS ......WE REQUIERE MORE VESPENE GAS ..... 3:55 FOR THE SWARM !
The sound of that dentist drill in the beginning still makes my teeth hurt. Nice touch director.
*"Spawn more Overlords."*
I don't think even Ozzy could've thought of a melody this sinister and dark.

I love the random metal music that happens in the middle. I like to think that it's when the zerg build up their forces.
7:00 8:37 best part for me ^^, reminds me a lot of memories... epic !
Dang it. Pure love.
ME TOO!!
The more I listen to that part, the more I'm scared of the Zergs...

Guess if I had continued playing and listening to this, I would have ended up morbidly obese by now hah
oh Hi defiler
This is a betrayal most foul, Kerrigan. We were fools to have gone along with this charade!
I just reinstalled HOTS and this song was played in the title screen. The feels
I love that they let you pick the soundtrack now, old or new.
