    VoicePlay knows how to arrange a song. They always pay respect to the original yet put that special VoicePlay esthetic into it. Ans I'm blown away by the fact that they do almost everything themselves.
    And another great cover is the Halo theme (watch the outro). Of course My Mother Told Me and Valhalla Calling are standouts.
    So happy to see you enjoying good music and life!

    Geoff does those sub harmonic sounds both here with Voiceplay and his own channel. And, both being independent artists, almost everything is done by them. A very talented group/person. Plus, they cover almost every genre of music. Enjoy! Hoist the Colors is a great song to do next.

    You know Geoff Castellucci from reacting to him solo. Next to him is guest J. None, he is a former member that left to join the Navy, but guests when on leave. In the middle is Eli (rhythms with jelly) Jacobson, then Cesar De La Rosa, and beatboxer Layne Stein (vio - Layne in this video lol). Geoff and Layne take turns with arrangements. Layne and former member Tony Wakim run Patty Cake studios, where VP does a lot of their stuff. geoff's wife , Kathy , is their production manager , as she is for Goeff's solo stuff.
    Suggestions: their covers of "oogie Boogie Song" from the Nightmare Before Christmas, Aerosmith's "Dream On", and "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from Encanto.

    Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbithole! They're fantastic singers who can nail songs as solemn as this one and as hilarious as Drunken Sailor. If you want a really excellent (live!) comedy performance from them, check out "Road Trip" from their time in the Sing-off tour, maybe 10 years ago. Whatever you choose to listen to from them, I think you'll enjoy. :)

    My joint-favourite acapella group along with Home Free, possibly even straight favourite because recently I've liked their choices of songs more. VP are known as the "theatre kids of acapella"; you'll see why soon enough. My top pick for next VP would be _Valhalla_ _Calling,_ maybe followed by an older one, _Queen_ _in_ _5_ _Minutes._ Do you like Disney or video games? If you do, that opens up a lot more possibilities, though there's still plenty if you don't. Enjoy!

      You might want to check out his solo channel. His cover of I See Fire from Desolation of Smaug is incredible. He often arranges for four or five parts in his solo channel recording each of them and then filming a clone of himself for each line. So all the dwarfs shown are him and each of them gets to shine in their particular range.
      Frequently, especially in his older videos, the primary Geoff had the others as back ups. But recently he’s been experimenting with letting each of his altar ego have some time to shine.
      He does not do a cappella work by the way. There is instrumentation which he also creates by playing on the keyboard and then selecting the correct plug-in for that particular sound. He does however sometimes use organic sounds. In the video I suggested there’s a snare and it’s him pushing a shovel into a pile of sand or dirt. He’s pretty much a perfectionist and gets exactly the sound he wants.

    Glad you liked this one. It was pretty epic. I posted links to their cover of Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and their own medley "Classical Chaos". Both are fun and a bit goofy but very well done. And that interview with E from TCV relates to the latter. Links are in the Discord but I can repost if you like.

    Welcome to the VoicePlay rabbit hole! Through my years as a VoicePlaya I've put together a list of "rules" (suggestions) to enhance your VoicePlay experience, and some info on the group. Let me know if you're interested. I'll only do it if a reactor says "okay" because, while only one reactor out of many ever took any offense, I definitely do not want anyone to think I'm telling them how to react. This is a great starting video for VoicePlay. My top two favorites are their Halloween release this year, a cover of Thriller, and Valhalla Calling. Enjoy the trip!💙

    The arranger, in this case, Geoff - the bass, prepares a combined track with all of the vocals just the way he wants them. Then each singer is given a track with their part, plus the combined to practice (and suggest adjustments). Then each records in their own home studio, then sends it back to the arranger, who assembles the whole thing and gets it as close to perfection as he can. Then they do the video, edit the video, and ship the vocals to Ed Boyer to finish. Having started as a live, touring band, they are really mindful of knowing how they will reproduce it live as needed. But - since Geoff, Layne (beatbox) and Eli (the high tenor you commented on) all have small children at home, for now they are (mostly) not touring.

    Their "Hoist the colours" leaves me in really serious goosebumps everytime I listen to it ❤

  • @DavideBaroni
    @DavideBaroni Місяць тому +6

    Yup, of course it was done in studio, but I'm pretty confident they could replicate it live with not much difference. Of course the "production" wouldn't be THIS accurate, but if you get some of their live videos (which tend to be old, they would likely be better nowadays) you'll see that they are pretty excellent in that context as well. 🙂
    BTW, if I remember correctly this video was the one that yelled them an invitation to sing live on stage with the band Chicago. There are "official videos" of that performance... 😁.

    • @elvwood
      @elvwood Місяць тому +3

      One big difference is that Layne (at least) is layered - you can hear his beatboxing continue while he's playing the "violayne" solo, which I'm pretty sure wouldn't be possible live. But yeah, some of the phone footage from concerts shows how good they sound even without the extra production. It's kind of sad that they stick to studio except for specal events now, but I can see how it works better for them.

    • @DavideBaroni
      @DavideBaroni Місяць тому +6

      @@elvwood Layne is actually able to beatbox while playing violin... He does it in "Warriors", if my memory serves me well. And they tried it here as well, but it didn't LOOK well, so they layered it. 🙂

      Also, Geoff originally taught Layne to beatbox. So when it's needed, Geoff kicks in with the beatboxing (or sometimes one or two of the others) until Layne is able to pick back up again. It works backwards too, Layne is also able to sing bass (same with all the other members) and will cover for Geoff. You have to really watch and rewatch to catch it all sometimes. It's really impressive!

    If you’ve haven’t done their cover of Aerosmith’s Dream On, you need to. You thought the high here was something? Wait until you hear that one.
    Others I’d recommend for a rocker are their covers of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Radiohead’s Creep, White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, Black Hole Sun (blanking on original artist there), and Mr. Blue Sky. (Can’t recall that artist either.)
    Also, if it helps, this line up from left to right was Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci, J None, Eli Jacobson (Not E-Lie; it’s pronounced like jelly without the J.), Cesar DeLaRosa, and Layne Stein.

    Voiceplay is quite the gem. Completely independent. Geoff the bass and layne the percussionist alternate most of the arrangements and video productions. Geoff's wife is a main producer/coordinator.
    Last few yearscthey have gone all in on patreon and making elite videos every month.
    They excel at anything Halloween, video game theme song, and broadway/Disney.

    He wrote it for his girlfriend but that relationship didn't work out. In the end, the rest of the band talked him into doing it for the fans. This project was Geoff's to do which was the arranging, staging, costuming, Eli (bald tenor - aka Rock God) does the lighting for VoicePlay, video is usually arranged, then shot out to the guys, who find out what it'll sound like, anything they feel like could be a better choice for their voice they let Geoff know, Geoff had arranged Layne's voice for the guitar solo and at the last he asked Layne to do the violin (been doing the violin since he was 4 - Layne's good), the guys from Geoff, J None (guest vocal here but used to be in VP before getting recruited into a 5 yr stint in the US Navy for their chorus), Eli in the middle has a powerful voice, Cesar next to him is the newest member, replacing both J None (baritone) and Earl (high tenor and an original member from middle and high school along with Geoff, Layne and Mykal (see him in Be Prepared and Stand by Me. He left the group after a few years when he left for Broadway and Scott left for an acting careeer (both did spectacularly well) - then called 4:2:five with Scott coming on as member 5)). Cesar has some real sass to his voice (for his audition VP arranged We're Good (Dua Lipa) one of my favorites and secured Cesar a place in my heart.) Tony (a former member) wanted to get into productions so he and Layne bought the studio (Pattycake Productions) where most of VoicePlay and Geoff's videos take place. Layne and Geoff have split the project work until Eli has put his foot into those waters. His first was Eleanor Rigby, and second was Creep so Layne and Geoff get a bit of a breather waiting for their next project choice. Layne (not a surprise) did the project In the Air Tonight (Phil Collins). These guys have been doing this officially as they graduated from high school (1997) if you want to see them back then do the Halo Theme and watch to the end.

    Geoff Castellucci arranged this masterpiece. He and Layne Stein (the beatboxer/violinist) have more-or-less split the group's arranging duties 50-50 until this year when Eli Jacobson (the tenor with the cool mustache) is beginning to join the arranging lineup. This piece demonstrates only one side of their group personality: serious and beautiful. (Like Man in the MIrror). Another side is their theatricality: costumes, makeup, scenery, and storytelling along with the music. (Like I've Got Friends on the Other Side). They're fond of medleys of musical films or shows. (Check out Wicked.) Yet another aspect is the silly side. They like to clown around and have fun with each other while performing. They always take the music seriously, but never themselves. (One of my favorites is Bang!.)
    And yes, their videos use a pre-recorded soundtrack. Not recorded in one studio, though, like most groups. I'll leave it to someone else to explain their method.

    You mentioned the lyrics. I think that’s one of my favorite things about them other than their sheer vocal talent. They have done covers of songs that I’ve listened to 1000 times but never really “ heard” the lyrics. An excellent example of that (at least for me) is Dream On. I’ve heard it but I really never paid attention to the lyrics.
    I’d like to recommend you check their fairly recent cover of stand by me. Some people mistake it for a short because it is filmed in the vertical format like they do their shorts but it is a full production. It features one of their original members back from when they were in high school. Another one of my favorites is featuring DeeJay Young. It’s a cover of MJ’s The Way You Make Me Feel.

    Love the way you pointed out Geoff's bass sounds actually plucked when he is singing the bass guitar parts. You might check their cover of "Seven Nation Army" by White Stripes. He adds enough hmmmm (or perhaps it is nasal tone?) that it sounds even more like an electric bass instead of a stand up. He does it in other songs, too, but it's more obvious in that one since the bass line is so predominate in the original. Besides, the way they can give us a synth sound in it is really surprising and the beatbox is outrageous.
