The Road (Danny O'Keefe)
Highways and dance halls
A good song takes you far
You write about the moon
You dream about the stars
Blues in old motel rooms
Girls in Daddies' cars
You sing about the nights
You laugh about the scars
Coffee in the morning
Cocaine all night long
On the graveyard shift
Buried in a song
Phone calls long distance
Tell you how you've been
You'll forget about the losses
You'll exaggerate the wins
And when you stop to let'em know you got it down
It's just another town along the road
The ladies come to see you
If your name still rings a bell
They'll get you down to nothin'
And they'll say they knew you well
You tell'em you'll remember
But they know it's just a game
And along the road their faces
All begin to look the same
It isn't for the money
And it's only for a while
You stalk about the rooms
You roll away the miles
Gamblers in the neon
Clinging to guitars
You're right about the moon
But you're wrong about the stars
And when you stop to let'em know you got it down
It's just another town along the road

There's no better song about fame, travel, the entertainment business and the emptiness of it all. Genius!
This guys the real deal. Beautiful songs
Man, O’Keefe wrote a couple of my all time favorite songs. Genius.
I saw Danny as warmup for Poco (maybe it was SHF band) around 1973 at the Santa Monica Civic. I didn't know who he was at the time, but he was the best performer I ever saw onstage. Charisma, talent, and what a voice. After about a minute I turned to my brother sitting next to me and we both said the same thing, "this guy is GOOD". The headline act I can't even remember.
Struck by genius just like I was when I first heard him.
Soulful music played by a great story teller. Thank you for sharing.
Have loved his music for 40 years....
Still hard to listen dry eyes.
"this song still makes me cry.
Bought this album a long time ago when it first came out, still puts a ball of barb wire in my belly when I think of all my times and friends and lovers are past and gone , just sayin
You laugh about the scars . . .
A Jewel of a song !
One of my favorites too. I'm so glad to hear the original version live.
It’s just in a different key
One of the great singer/songwriters. His does folky tunes, smooth r@b, rock and quirky tales. A true star indeed.
Lovely...There's a whole bunch of us out here doin Danny O'Keefe songs every day! Genius, isn't quite enough of a word to describe his music.
Ahhhh...The Great O'Keefe,
I've loved Danny's music as long as I can remember. Have all of his recordings.
I've been fortunate to have seen Danny's rare and intimate performances at McCabes.
His deeply personal songs, a mixture of haunting, funny, sad and beautiful, along with
his distinct voice and guitar playing have made Danny a national treasure.
Great seeing this version. Thank you for sharing it and thank you Danny.
Even after 45 years, hearing "The Road" still moves my soul.
Wonderful 💎. I love Danny's music since the first album. I live in Switzerland and it was not easy to find all Danny's records. I did it and i don't regret. Underrated artist!
I first found that Song between my fathers cd´s on the album "Running on Empty" from Jackson Browne. I loved that song. Then through UA-cam I found out, that Danny O´Keefe was the original writer and I was even more amazed by his version.
Now I arrived here on his live version which is also special in it´s own way.
I listen to that tune daily for weeks now, guess it becomes one of the songs that can´t get boring, no matter how often you listen to it.
And at the moment im trying to copy the chords from the video to learn it by myself, but this fingerpicking technique is impossible to grab on to.
All my respect for this song and Danny´s whole career.
My all time favorite song.
Thank you Danny.
Thanks for the memory Danny
Thanks Danny.

Santa Monica, CA. USA
@@mandowayne Thanks Wayne.
i sure hope he made lots of money when Jackson Browne covered this
If you ever did it, you know
Odd way to hold an Emin7. Eric Clapton also has a very unusual way of chording.
:)

UNA CITTA` PER CANTARE
by Ron
Browne
Turn off your caps and learn how to spell you dolt
JB does his song so much better!!!!!
BubbaTheBulldog Keep listening.......just as good just different.
I can't disagree. Jackson Browne does this song incredible justice. However,Danny gave him a beautiful piece of music and the song will forever be his .
Jackson Browne's interpretation is more soulful and memorable.
Più bella la versione in italiano di Ron
Beautiful
