To be fair, Chandler listened to his date's story, and ACTUALLY listened. I think it's the way Ross tells stories. I know it's annoying, because *I* do it, and have to constantly work on it

At this point they didn't jump the shark with swapping apartments after quizzes, and the characters weren't flanderized into caricatures. It felt real, like they were normal people, just more quick-witted than most of us. It was perfect for this first two and a half seasons
For those curious about Ross's theory: throughout the series Ross has mentioned Richard Leaky's work various times, almost as if it was an inside joke from the authors, but sometimes (like here) the mention isn't exactly perfect. Leaky has in fact commented on someone else's theory about the first humans' monogamy, but it's not like he said something in particular himself, so it appears a bit hard to imagine what Ross was going to say since there isn't really that much.

Really wanted to know the concept of monogamy he was mentioning.
Human beings are not naturally monogamistic creatures. From biologicall perspective we marriage is unnatural and against sexual instincts of people. Monogamy is creation of society. BUT, it is not wrong. Societies with monogamy are much more stable and internally peacefull. Studies shown that poligamy is providing society with some serious potential to terrorism, criminality and wars, both internal and external. All that, because if there is no limit to one partner, rich, attractive and overall desirable people end up with many partners, while those on bottom end up desperate, wich makes easier for them to engage in violent and destructive activitis, if the potential reward is to not being alone anymore.
Sounds a bit like "incel" problem, and I am not saying that women should let men take them in order to sustain stability of society (actually this idea was brought up in Huxley's book "Brave new world", very interesting look), but society with cultural appreciation towards monogamy (at least when it comes to long life partners, sexual clearence comes from different sources) end up less
susceptible to total deconstruction, internal wars, terrorism and has less criminal activity, especially violent kind of activity.

And not merely because I’m a woman lol but I see it around me all the time, which makes what I’ll say purely anecdotal: men appear to be happier when they commit to a partner. They may enjoy the occasional flirtations with other women, but especially career-focused type of men seem to enjoy stability in their family or romantic life. Even when they cheat, they have affairs (Bill Gates- ooops!) rather than hopping between flings or going for one-night-stands.
The book Sex at Dawn covers this topic well.

The only reason why people hate Ross is because he was brilliant and had depth. He didnt care for small talk, honestly not sure what he had to talk about to Rachel.
