I always felt that Twilight Princess is the most cinematic of the Zelda games, as Nintendo used many techniques commonly found in filmmaking to heighten the unfolding of the story. That in addition to Midna's tremendous narrative arc plus the unforgettable ending makes it the top Zelda story for me.

I think Twilight Princess has the best story, thanks to Midna’s character development, and how it relates to what the game has to say about power. How it motivates Zant and Ganondorf, even how it motivates Link, and by extension, you, the player. It even tackles systemic oppression and economic disparity and the outcomes of abusing power. I think it’s so genuinely well thought out and as the video already put it, one of the greatest pieces of fantasy fiction ever made
I love Link’s Awakening but it’s WAY too high on this list. The game ultimately asks a great question about what’s real but the story itself is incredibly straightforward and simple.
As straight forward as it is I think the question about what’s real is poignant enough, and its ultimate message is just about how hard it is to let go, with Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Wind Waker all having their own takes on that topic as well
@@chrislevack405this is a bad take. It’s a story about the leader of a broken kingdom attempting to, out of desperation, steal the equivalent of another kingdom’s sun, essentially. This plot involves kidnapping, deception, and even killing. A Link to the Past does nothing like that at all.

There is no greater Zelda story than Skyward sword. You have romance, great characters, the origin of the master sword, the origin of Hylia and the reason why Link,Zelda, and Ganondorf always exist in different games. You even have the TRIFORCE pieces collected in THE SACRED REALM and made manifest into the full triforce and used by Link. Not to mention you have connections to OOT, Link to the past and Twilight Princess. It's the ultimate Zelda story.
Man i gotta defend Windwaker!! What an apocalyptic water world kind of situation! I think Ganondorf’s character is one of the most compelling villains in all of Zelda, Tetra being the most subversive and playful Zelda in the series, this zero to hero version of link absolutely embodies the spirit of a courageous young kid who literally takes on the world, and just such a rich painting of this post-apocalyptic hyruke both in gameplay, map design, and in characterization. It’s only beat out by the absolutely unbelievable complexity of majora’s mask, never seen a game where the full story takes so much patience and true dedication to living out the real life of this 3 day repeat. Ridiculous creativity
#2 for me, twilight princess has the best story, and may even be the best zelda game of all time, i think the ganon in this game is both the most powerful iteration and most well written of all zelda
Tears of the kingdom’s story is better than Breath of the wild, BOTW story was less focus by the open world, TOTK has the same open world but the story did it better and has Ganondorf.
The King of Hytopia's mournful "Ooooooohhhh!!!" is a 10 out of 10 despite how thin Triforce Heroes' plot may be. I hope whoever recorded that line got a bonus.
Both WW and TP have excellent story narratives. We are introduced to people Link actual cares about (family, close friends), a conflict in the over world affects them early in the game. And that allows us to grow more of an emotional attachment to the characters and the story. Both have great overarching stories that put an interesting spin on Hyrule and how players traverse the over-world. Both have heartwarming conclusions that leave us feeling happy and satisfied.
WW to me I like the most not because I enjoyed the open water exploration in traveling from island to island. But this version of Ganondorf had more in depth to his character (since he was coveted the wind and green field of Hyrule since the Gerudo Desert carried nothing but suffering and ruin). I wish OG Japanese original text are being kept since it shows more of Ganondorf's motivation than the English localization (since he wanted to bring back the land that's roamed by demons and despise anyone who lacks a fighting spirit).
Breath of the Wild and Ocraina of Time to me are the best narrative stories of the Legend of Zelda franchises while Skyward Sword serves at the perfect origin story of how everything had started it all.
Ranking TOTK below BOTW is crazy. BOTW’s story was an afterthought. Prime example of letting bias to a game introducing you to a world impact your rating. They’re both phenomenal games - and though TOTK did have some issues with repetition in its four boss cutscenes - its story is much more compelling with more complex characterization. WW needs to be pushed up too - while following a similar formula as most Zelda games, it was much easier to feel more personally involved with the stakes.
I question. Spirit Tracks ranked lower than half the other 2d games post NES and Breath being ranked higher than Tears? Other than that, I have little arguments. I saw number 1 coming.
I actually do agree with this list i also want to mention that Majora’s Mask has so much secret lore its Wild its indeed the BEST and transforming was also really fun!
I must disagree. Twilight Princess needs to be #1. It was by far the darkest of the Zelda games and the story was unstoppably good. Major's Mask, while fun and interesting doesn't even come close.
Majora's Mask is honestly the Zelda game I hesitate replaying the most. Outside Stone Tower Temple the dungeons honestly kinda suck. Great Bay Temple in particular is a slog to get through.
If they weren't rushed in the development process and could've finished all the dungeons and cut that crappy Triforce quest out, it would be number 1 of all time.
Majora's mask was basically the Zelda team not knowing what to do and throwing a story together last minute it's like The godfather part 3. Kids these days are too easy to please if you throw in some Alice in wonderland macabre lore.
Checked out when the original was 18th out of 19th. Completely laid the foundation to the land of Hyrule, the triforce, Ganon, princess zelda, enemies, items, the look and design of these characters.
I think Im blinded by nostalgia because majora's mask was my first Zelda game but Im glad it's getting so much recognition lately, those developers deserve it lol.
Gonna garner some hate here, but Tears and Breath are too high on the list. When you actually get into storyline, those two games are rather lacking. Tears at least gives some story, but Breath doesn't give much at all.
And the 3 ds games are way too low. Especially spirit tracks and albw. Phantom hourglass gave us linebeck and one of the creepiest sections in 2d topdown zelda.
The placements are solid. I'm glad you agree that the latest Zelda games are mid and lack in story department. However I believe even phantom hourglass has more story than BOTW and TOTK.
They say you never forget your first. Mine was Ocarina of Time. Never forgot the story in all that time. Other favorites of mine are Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Wind Waker
Even crazier with Majora's Mask, when you do the hide & seek games inside the moon to give the four kids your masks to get the Fierce Deity's Mask, they start to ask you philosophical questions that not only are really hard to answer with the way they ask them, but also really destroy the Fourth Wall. And when you confront Majora's Mask, the kid wearing it acts like he wants to play with you, which begs the question we've all pondered over and over: who is Majora? And what's his connection to his four minions when you encounter those kids inside of the moon?
I always assumed those were the voices tormenting the skull kid. Them asking if your friends think of you as friends or asking if your actions actually make other people happy, I always figured it was his inner demons.
Still think if they remade ocarina of times entire story in the BOTW engine, or made a hyrule in that engine that reflected the hyrule from ocarina, and redid that story in a different way but with all the same characters and places being depicted in a fresh way, would be the greatest Zelda ever even without a new story. The story would seem new from being presented in a different visual style and setting. Obviously a lot of the puzzles in the dungeons might have to change with the climbing mechanic, or it could be like in the shrines how you can’t climb walls. Doubt they ever do this, but a man can dream, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who would enjoy that premise
aw man ALMOST HAD IT for once... Twilight Princess.. is THE BEST ZELDA GAME AND STORY HANDS DOWN BAR NONE! layers upon layers, such a complete Zelda experience... now.. I LOVVEE Majora... don't get me wrong, but, switch 1 and 2 and we finally have it right WatchMojo
The story of Breath of the Wild was very beautiful. And it was all there in the world. Tears of the Kingdom, however... Was meh. The Age of Calamity had great story too, even if the time travel was a bit underwhelming.
Botw at 7 is too high. It should be a lot lower. The story is so weak that the developers themselves didn’t want to reference it in any way in the literal sequel.
Wind Waker and Skyward Sword are easily the best stories, hands down. Should've been the top 2 imo. I agree that Midna's arc in Twilight Princess is incredible, however, most elements of the plot outside of hers fall short... hence I'd bump it down a few. Four Swords Adventures has more plot and lore than you gave credit for in the video. Spirit Tracks and A Link Between Worlds deserved to be a bit higher. Tears of the Kingdom deserves to be over Breath of the Wild, although I do agree that Wild had better environmental story telling. Very mixed list for me lol.
I don’t understand the high about Majora’s mask? Its a great game but not my most favorite, it hold back with only 4 dungeons, frustrated time and the story not strong like OOT
@@mattiasolsson1523 is because the story is not focused on the main line, the true story unfolds within the side quests, those NPC told you the true story, there's only 4 dungeons yes but there's a lot more in the side quests, put attention to the dialogues and you will understand more of the story. In Majora's mask Link is not the chosen hero of the goddesses, he became the hero of the people by helping them not because it was his destiny but because it was the right thing to do.
@@mattiasolsson1523 yeah but the point in Majora's mask is that knowing all NPC's quests they feel more attached to link giving him a bigger reason to save them and protect them not just because he got tangled in their mess but because it was what a hero must do to protect those who has become his friends. Think about it, Link got a mask every time he helped someone from clock town, in every action Link became a sort of hero or friend who helped them when they needed him the most and as a token of friendship he carries those masks and in the end those masks gave Link access to the Fierce Deity mask and was able to eradicate the evil within the Majora's mask, so the story has more meaning than just the main quest.
Majora's Mask And Ocarina both have very solid and original storylines. Granted Ocarina's story feels a little less original these days because so many other Zelda games have a similar storyline at this point. But I still hold that Ocarina has a very good story. Majora's Mask might be better though.
So I totally agree. Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess being 1 and 2 are in my list as well! IMO Minish Cap is way to low, also how dare ya put Spirit Tracks above Phantom Hourglass lol. (I understand your reasoning, I personally just really hated Spirit Tacks as a game lol)
I’m afraid I can’t agree with Majora’s Mask being number one. Don’t get me wrong, the storyline is very good. But Ocarina of Time has Link traveling back and forth between his childhood and adulthood to save Hyrule. On top of that, it’s the point where the timeline splits three ways giving different futures and games.
Majora's Mask has to be the top one in story. Triforce Heroes doesn't even feel like it belongs in Zelda. Isn't this more of a Mario quest? Four Swords Adventures in the best multiplayer Zelda game and it predates Triforce heroes which is the worst by over a decade. Ages and Seasons should be higher on the list. Bulls**t! Tears of the Kingdom had a better story then Breath of the Wild. 18:21 I notice this Link is a thief. Which Zelda storyline kept you up for days playing till the end? Definitely Tears of the Kingdom. I stayed up too long playing that. I played all night. Thank God it was the weekend.
I have played only 8 LOZ games so far (botw, totk, oot, z1, alttp, minish, links awake, ss), and i would say my favorite so far is ss, close 2nd is oot. But botw will always have a special place since its my 1st loz game and i really fell in love with the franchise bec of it I would play majoras mask after totk, then hopefully they port to the switch ww, tp, and a link between worlds!!
Surprised WW is not in the top 3. I felt it had the most interesting versions of Ganondorf and Zelda. I’m also here for the upset comments about BOTW, TOTK, and OOT not being in the top 3.
@@Diogo_7237 I grew up with AlttP and I'd put BotW and TotK into the top 3 along with MM. MM has the best cast of side characters and one of the most unique premises of the franchise. BotW had the best worldbuilding and main cast. And TotK had the best cinematics and individual moments (best intro, ending, master sword scene and pre-dungeon stories).
Twilight Princess absolutely belonds in the #2 spot. My only issue is the placement of BOTW and TOTK. I was far more investing in the TOTK story than BOTW. BOTW was good solely for the fact that it told the story of the heroes defeat but TOTK was far more compelling in my humble opinion.
You can't go "Tears Of The Kingdoms Story happens in the past" and put it in eight place while putting the STORY of Link's Awakening and Majoras Mask in third and first for all the great side characters. 😅
If anyone wants an even better story of twilight princess go read the manga as its amazing and also fixes some of the issues with the timeline since it game our after Nintendo stated the order. Its genuinely very very good and makes the already amazing story better
Not having ocarina of time as number one is so disrespectful to the Zelda series in itself. It’s the game that not only changed the Zelda franchise forever and virtually every game in the series borrowed from after; it changed all of gaming history. It’s like saying Return of the Jedi was a better Star Wars movie than empire strikes back.
By that logic, Zelda 1 should be ranked higher based on how groundbreaking it was in and of itself. But, this ranking ignores that context, and looks at the stories independently and objectively. I don’t agree with all rankings on this list, but I’m okay with OOT not being #1. It’s a pretty good story (there are some gnarly implications within the game about Hyrule’s civil war) but I certainly wouldn’t say it has the BEST story of all Zelda games.
the biggest flaw from TotK story is that it doesn't match up with other games, not even breath of the wild. where are the guardians, devine beast and the triforce? what if zelda never traveled back in time?
No it isn’t. Botw and Totk, being open world games, struggle at telling good stories because the plot isn’t allowed to progress. That’s why Skyward Sword’s story is high. The linear plot progression helps the story be a lot more enticing. I never enjoyed Totk’s story because it was all over the place, just like Botw.

They have opinions and so do you. Not every 8 billion people in the world will agree with you.
@@YungBub9 Would you be mad if I said my opinion is that we should eat babies? Yes.
This is on the same level pal.
If they weren't rushed in the development process and could've finished all the dungeons and cut that crappy Triforce quest out, it would be number 1 of all time.
@@jarlwhiterun7478 I may be misinterpreting your comment. But in my opinion those things don't effect the story just the gameplay
Not everyone thinks like Zeltik dude.
Great video!
Could you do a Rank every Kingdom Hearts game by story video?
Majora's mask was basically the Zelda team not knowing what to do and throwing a story together last minute it's like The godfather part 3. Kids these days are too easy to please if you throw in some Alice in wonderland macabre lore.
I love Zelda a link between worlds!
I'm soooooooo glad Link's Awakening made the Top 3; absolutely fantastic game that'll always have a place in my heart
The stories of the Hero Of Time are two of the greatest stories I've ever had the privilege of witnessing and playing!
Ocarina of time and majoras mask. What an amazing two-punch combo. My favorite Zelda games by far
I thought the thumbnail was Iron Maiden art for a moment lmao
Rankling oot at 5 is criminal
Gonna garner some hate here, but Tears and Breath are too high on the list. When you actually get into storyline, those two games are rather lacking. Tears at least gives some story, but Breath doesn't give much at all.
And the 3 ds games are way too low. Especially spirit tracks and albw.
Phantom hourglass gave us linebeck and one of the creepiest sections in 2d topdown zelda.
The placements are solid. I'm glad you agree that the latest Zelda games are mid and lack in story department. However I believe even phantom hourglass has more story than BOTW and TOTK.
They ranked all the ds games way to low. Albw has a better story than lttp, ph is very unique and spirit tracks is one of the best zelda stories
Windwaker at 6 is a crime...
They say you never forget your first. Mine was Ocarina of Time. Never forgot the story in all that time. Other favorites of mine are Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Wind Waker
Spirit Tracks story is extremely underrated.
He's a evil spirit possesing a mask obviously, we don't know where he came from or what he was....but we at least know that.
Spirit tracks had a great story
Spirit tracks is my fav
The ds games are ranked way too low on this list for story
Totally agree! It’s my favorite game of all time and got me into Zelda! The recent open world games pale in comparison!
#2 YES!!! It remains my FAVORITE Zelda Game to date!!!
My top 2 favorite Zelda games were in the top 2!
Cadence of Hyrule deserves a place in the canon.
I'd love to see a similar video for the pokémon franchise! Some of the storylines are really great and have a lot of nuance if you pay attention.
Finally Majora's mask gets the deserved 1st place 😊 totally agree with the top 3, Majora's mask is my absolute favorite Zelda no matter what.
@@Peregrino-kj8fz
Still the main quest is more important and to be honest i say OOT do it better.
@@mattiasolsson1523in terms of main quest story, yeah OoT and SS have it beat, but factoring in everything, MM is the best
Now do every zelda game ranked based on music
We need more games like twilight princess and links awakening.
Ocarina above skyward sword is crazy
So glad there isn’t any recency bias here, and making BoTW or ToTK number one. MM definitely deserves the number one spot.
A game being on the NES doesn't make it impossible to make a complex story. Telling stories through games just hadn't evolved enough back then.
Good list though, gonna get some Breath and Tears fans hot though I bet.
i think in terms of buildup and payoff, totk outranks breath of the wild.
Both totk and botw not top 3 is fkn crazy like not even 1 or the other is crazy
Oot, mm and tp are just top tier games
BotW being in front of TotK is an atrocity.
No it isnt
I have played only 8 LOZ games so far (botw, totk, oot, z1, alttp, minish, links awake, ss), and i would say my favorite so far is ss, close 2nd is oot. But botw will always have a special place since its my 1st loz game and i really fell in love with the franchise bec of it
I would play majoras mask after totk, then hopefully they port to the switch ww, tp, and a link between worlds!!
Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy IX will always be my top 2 stories on a video game
Metal Gear Solid, Majoras Mask, and Final Fantasy X for me
Surprised WW is not in the top 3. I felt it had the most interesting versions of Ganondorf and Zelda.
I’m also here for the upset comments about BOTW, TOTK, and OOT not being in the top 3.
Only zoomers who haven't played all Zelda games would think that BoTW and ToTK are the best stories.
The story didn't feel properly fleshed out in the Wild series.
TotK’s story is mediocre by Zelda standards or regular video game standards
@@beezar113still above BOTW . It danced circles around BOTW “story”
My favorite Zelda game of all time is the number one best story. Thank you
Twilight Princess absolutely belonds in the #2 spot.
"The game many would say is the best game of all time... is number 5 on this list of best in its own series"😂
So where does Zelda: Echos of Wisdom place on this list?
I think Syward Sword should've been ranked at 3 rather than Link's Awakening
the biggest flaw from TotK story is that it doesn't match up with other games, not even breath of the wild. where are the guardians, devine beast and the triforce? what if zelda never traveled back in time?
Skyward Sword was #4 and it was STILL too low 😑
TOTK at #8 is criminal!
Love to see the majoras mask love
