- Re-uploaded my 2016 video that got my "How games are made series" started. I make a few corrections.
You've probably spent countless hours playing games from the 8 and 16 generation consoles but how were they made? In this Splash Wave mini-series, we unravel some secrets about how they were typically created. In this first episode we focus on the graphical aspects of the NES, Sega Mega-Drive/ Genesis and Super Nes.

This is one of these channels that I don't understand why it has a "Thanks for watching". No sir. Thank YOU for creating all these videos, it's so well fed to the viewer it should be played in actual university game creation courses.
+ 1 One Million
and how this channel not have millions of viewers? (that’s insane)
Keep pushing Strafefox, you’ll be there. You need to know - you’re channel is valuable!
Hop off of it will you!!!
True
That's bitmuths department
Absolutely, this answered the exact question I just had after watching a super Mario world n64 speed run. I was taken back and amazed at how they create a world inside a small chip. Thanks for the information ❤
I finally decided to re-upload this old video and correct the "18-bit" mistake :D
I had to search for it, I couldn't find it in your Videos page. Awesome video, when I was a kid I thought this shit was magic.
I love how much you care about your work!
I've heard that you can edit the video without reuploading now. Not sure if it's true though
Chase, your voice is perfect and the video is scripted extremely well. 👍 Please continue to narrate more videos. Love the 3D FX too! You all pull off the 80s vibe perfectly. Out Run baby!
I never seen such professional editing in all my history of being a youtube user. Amazing work!
Respect to the programmers who had to tediously cram games into tiny amounts of memory.
And now they can throw unfinished games at us forcong us to download 50 GB+ day one patches....
and make our childhood awesome
some people still have to lol
Respect? They did it to put food on their table, not for YOU.
@@gay4pay882you are trying to say some game developers weren't passionate about their creations? Just dudes in cubicles essentially? What an L take. That they don't deserve respect for their contributions to modern gaming? The countless hours of fun kids and adults have enjoyed for decades? Weird.
this channel deserves more subscribers
That port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 was nothing short of a technical miracle- it’s hard to believe that they managed to get a game even the Saturn couldn’t perfectly handle, to run on a console that couldn’t perfectly run Street Fighter II in the first place.
like they say "what nintendo do ,sega'nt"
Your content is incredible mate, your production values blow everybody else's out of the water. I hope your channel explodes in popularity. In short, a winner is you!
Thanks man i appreciate that!!

If this was teached at my school I would actually be interested.
Instead of scratch and ms office applications all the time, lol
You clearly haven’t been paying enough attention at school because you should have wrote “taught” instead of “teached” lol. Unless English is not your first language of course
Normally this kind video have at least 1m views, you deserves more
I'm amazed you don't have more subscribers, this is great stuff!
I don’t understand it either.
Why is this video free? The quality is from another world. I hope you are receiving the amount of money you deserve with UA-cam, since your video editing skills are unmatched by any other youtuber.
The ending song... So many memories
At 7:51 it would've been funny if commander keen was playing on the tv. Great video, dude
Bro I’m just in love with these vids with NES and SNES games
*i must watch them all*
2 videos in the space of a week. Christmas has come early. It's amazing how devs back in the day came up with inventive ways to make their games better.
This channel is phenomenal. You should try to get a UA-cam series-deal so you can make more vids more frequently (and have other people to do the menial, non-creative bulk-work).
The channel is infinity better than a vast majority of the bigger ones out there
I agree the biggest hurdle is copyright though, any material that is copyright owned. Means he would need to apply for permission and copyright holders permission. The only issue with that is he would have to pay the makers generally in the process...
Re-uploaded, Re-watched
10/10, as always!
Even today, you still have the most high quality production in your videos!
That's awesome you showed Totally Rad for the NES. Wonderful graphics on that game.
I adore the amount of effort you guys put into your video and the clear efficiency of the script and voice acting. Watching Spash Wave reminds me of the joy of watching G4 so many years ago, but even better honestly. Thank you!
I've never seen a channel with such production quality in my life. From the impecable written text, to the astonishing visual production (which is miles ahead of any channel on YT), to the incredible editing, but above all else the almost academic level of research into the VG industry at a time the Internet wasn't a thing and records were scarce (since the industry was much more niche than it is today). I am abolutely sure this series will one day be played at museums, and every university course will make reference to it. What an amazing and groundbreaking work sir. Congratulations and thank you for gracing us with your work.
Another hardware extension for the Sega Megadrive/Genesis that was placed inside the cartridges rather than an extension for the machine itself, were the J-Carts such as MicroMachines, Pete Sampras Tennis and Super Skidmarks, which added extra controller ports.
Then there's of course the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-On cart, as mentioned in your recent video in the Sonic series.
I'm always so speechless in front of such quality, such beautifully crafted video... Thank you so much Sir!
Nice work, this is broadcast production quality for sure!
It's sad that channels like this don't get the amount of subscribers or views that they deserve but millions of people flock to some of the most utter ridiculous crap that people post on UA-cam. The bell curve of intelligence is certainly demonstrated on UA-cam.
production quality here is unparalleled on YT!!!!!!! Well done brosif
Before this video I would've seen the Tower of Pisa level and thought 'Meh, they rotated the screen'. Now I just have my mind blown by how challenging it was to create these graphics, and the labour that must've gone into all of this. Great video.
Your videos are absolutely amazing. We are blessed to have you. Thanks for making these!!
INFINITE Respect for using Cosmic Eternity on your ending, I love that song!
A NES cart still has better memory than I do.
How humans ever came up with this will always blow my mind. Programmers are truly under appreciated.
How is there NOT a million views on this?? Wow. Love the videos! Amazing work!
Thank youuuuuu! My daughter picked "how are video games made" for homeschool funday today and your videos are perfect!!!
Ha! That's really cool to hear. And great topic :)
As a new generation game dev, your video is incredibly valuable. I always wondered how it worked. Big warmful thank you strafefox.
This is a super high quality UA-cam video. I learned so much and the cool visuals really helped to both explain things and keep me engaged. Thanks!
Great work as always!
Thanks for re-uploading! Really enjoyed and learned some new things :)
Lol, wanted to come down to the comments to mention how this channel is an undiscovered gem, saw that everyone beat me to it haha.
This is top quality channel, we gotta feed it more subscribers!
The music at the end is just perfect ❤️
Brilliant explanation.
Impeccable presentation as always! Thanks for all your hard work.
Love the channel. Your information is always on point and your production is second to none imo.
The amount of detail and information in this video blew my mind. Great stuff!
Awesome video man 👍👍
Wow, respect for reuploading a video just for having a small mistake in it, also keep up the good work, these videos are great.
Why this channel doesn’t have millions of subs is beyond me.
Another great episode! I just stumbled over your channel and I'm totally blasted about the quality of your content.
Thank you!
Amazing video! Keep up the great work!
The presentation of this video is amazing, this channel is way underrated for the effort and dedication put into it.

ill say it and share it a million times...best channel on the tubes
Your hard work will not go unnoticed
Just found this channel and it's amazing! You guys are doing a great job! Can't wait to see what's coming next
Wow, I wasn't expecting this to be this good! Excellent work!
One of the best channel on youtube hands down, amazing production, narration skills and presentation.
Thanks for putting the songs in the description, it annoys me when UA-camrs put music in their vids but don't mention the songs in case you wanna listen to them. Also I guess I have an excuse to re watch this now :V
But what's the very first song?
Sounds like something from early Sega to me, but I can't place it.
First song is a remix of Splash Wave from Outrun, so you're not far off.
Cool, thanks.
Yet another informative and visual beautiful video.
Looking forward to more.
Still killing it, your content is so far above the platforms standards its insane.
Beautifully crafted documentary... So much quality, so much interesting detail, so much artistic sense. Sir sorry I know my post are boring but you are a true genius, thank you so much for sharing.
Warm regards.
Thanks so much! A no your posts are not boring! they bring a smile on my face :)
I just got this video. I didn't even notice that "18-bit" mistake
Underrated channel. Amazing video, as always.
Outstanding video! The production quality and technical explanations were excellent. Why do you only have 50k subs. Keep up the great work.
Simply breathtaking...this was absolutely fantastic. You my friend have some serious chops when it comes to storytelling, visual flair, and musical choice. This is some of the best video editing I have ever seen.
this video is amazing, makes you look at your favorite games in a whole new light
Once again, your mindblowing explanations that are enhanced by your excellent visual descriptions. Please continue letting us in on the greatest secrets of our favorite games. Btw, love to see a video on the original Battletoads and Rare.
It's incredible all the ingenuity we take for granted nowadays. All these games may look simple or even "crappy" to today's newest generation, but a lot of innovative thinking and hard work was able to lay the foundation to so much of the modern systems we see now. Mind blowing video!
Wow!!! Thank you so much for making this video!! You've answered one of my greatest questions in amazing detail & style!!
Fantastic and very thorough video.
This kind of technical stuff always fascinates me
This video and channel needs alot of recognition because the effort you made this excellent content
Congratulations on the quality of the video. There is some real hard work and attention to detail involved. Thank you!
Amazing work as always!!!
Thanks for putting so much effort into these videos
Your videos are amazing and so professionally done. Subscribed and tuning in!
Great video will share with friends.
The quality of the video and also its informative value is of the roof :-O
*Great nostalgic video!*
I know it's been said a bunch in the comment section, but damn is this channel under subscribed. Holy shit the quality not just in production, but the clear and precise information and the novel facts are amazing. I first watched the Link to the Past doc and instantly subbed. What a great channel. Kind of reminds me of G4 Icons but more informative. Thank you for the content!
That song at the end is bananas.
Ok, I have not seen any other video on UA-cam, EVER, that makes me wonder this intensely how much time and effort would have gone into making it. This channel and the creator are in a league of their own.
Thank You Sir!
Salutes ❤️
Wow this is a really impressive video! Very well made, animated and explained. I am just starting out with NES development so this was really helpful!! Thanks!
best retro channel i'd ever seen.
great content, awesome video edit. congrats, bro!
Thanks so much!
Dude this channel is gonna go far. Looking forward to being able to say I was here early

Thank you for this high quality video
Thanks for the big effort in explaining!!
Wow such a incredible vid!!! I learn so much, and it was so entertaining! Congrats for this awesome video!
I always wanted to be a programmer on the 80´s and 90´s and be capable to make those amazing tricks... Amazing Channel! I love it!
Fantastic video!! Such high quality!! Easily subbed.
I adore your videos and I really hope this channel never stops making some of the best, highest quality content not only in UA-cam, but in the entire world. Thank you guys for your hard work!
Thanks so much for your kind words! Really awesome. I have a number of new episodes in the pipeline :)

Awesome! Congratulations for the great work!
Wonderful video! Waiting for Part II
Thanks! And you don't have to wait any longer :) here's part 2 ua-cam.com/video/jqyC_S56B3k/v-deo.html
@@strafefox awesome ty
I don't know why this video doesn't have more views. (Though it does have far more than mine. LOL) Your videos are VERY WELL DONE. I find myself watching them multiple times in some cases.
Keep up the great work!
It’s pretty amazing. It’s almost like old school slight of hand and trickery that would be used in live action play or magic performance (only in a computer).
This is so informative and you can tell a lot of research was done to make sure it was accurate. I wish more UA-cam Channels put this much effort into their videos.
I will never play a retro game the same way ever again. You just changed my life. :)
DAAAANG!!! GREAT CHANNEL!! loved the song at the end too!! 👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! This is what I've been looking for 🙏 It's important for me to learn something new everyday 😊
This channel is fantastic! Gotta sub! Also thanks for introducing me to the song at 6:50 ... DAYUM.
Its cool to see what struggles game developers had when I was a kid! These are not obsticles I have to deal with my self today. :)
