- Discussing the Mayan calendar and Mesoamerican astrology, which is the indigenous astrology of ancient Mexico and Central America, with astrologers Kenneth Johnson and Chris Brennan.
During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about the development of astronomy and astrology in Mayan and other Mesoamerican cultures prior to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, when many written documents were destroyed during the Spanish conquest.
Kenneth explains how Mesoamerican cultures had complex and highly accurate astronomically based calendars, and how these were tied in with a pervasive belief in astrology, conceptualized as a connection and mirroring between the sky and the earth.
One of the key features of Mayan astrology was a focus on tracking the cycles of Venus, as well as the development of a 260-day sacred calendar which consisted of 13 numbers and 20 day-signs that were used for astrological purposes.
Later in the episode we talk about what happened with some of the western misunderstandings surrounding the Mayan calendar ending in 2012, and how time is seen in terms of cycles that have no end.
Finally the last point we touch on is the recent revival and expansion of Mayan astrology in modern times, and how a new system has grown and developed over the past 30 years
Kenneth is the author of the book Mayan Calendar Astrology: Mapping Your Inner Cosmos.

Very glad that y’all took the time to mention that the information was destroyed for colonial reasons as well as religious. So much of our spiritual practice was lost to colonial agents.
Thank you Chris for introducing Kenneth, what a wonderful lifelong student on world mythology and an interesting guest! ❤❤
Fascinating learning about Mesoamerican astrology! It’s really interesting to think how all cultures around the world used astrology to plan out their daily lives

I have Ian's Mayan astrology video on my channel... with pictures donated to me from his partner, Madeline...
The renaissance of ancient astrology (project hindsight, mayan astrology, etc...) : Uranus-Neptune-Saturn conjunction in Capricorn (1989-1992). The next aspect is coming very soon (Uranus-Neptune sextile with Saturn-Neptune in 2026).
Hopefully my brother's work gets published soon as he can explain all the ancient calendars with a forgotten math, which l feel will also explain how astrology works generally.
This still sounds like the system that was reinterpreted after the spanish destroyed the knowledge by trying to explain it through the gregorian calendar, but my brother is the better one to talk to about this.
Sounds fascinating!
Remarkable
Guys, being a Mayan ajq'ij or daykeeper and a student of the calendar.... And having done a post graduate degree in mesooamerican studies.... In mesoamerica there was only ONE calendar. There was no distinction between aztec or zapoteca, or tarascan or mayan. Its like saying the Spanish calendar is different from the English becvause we say thursday and they say jueves. There are variants, depending on what was being measired or analyzed. But AZTEC AND MAYAN CALENDARS WERE THE SAME.
Hi I have Kenneths book I'm trying to work out the year lord of this year? Does anyone know if it would be "Eb 11" going into "Caban 12"? Many thanks .
I have read that Venus was the war planet for the Maya and I am wondering how this astrology worked...
There are many regions, and many eras, that we call "Mayan", so this may have been true at one time, and in one place...
Do you have three dimensional model which shows the astrological model ?
How planets make connections with humans to affect them ?

quote: The word "Maya" is used to describe the Maya civilization and other non-linguistic aspects of their culture, while the word "Mayan" is used to describe the languages that are spoken by them. The word "Mayan" is often incorrectly used as an adjective to describe the people from the ancient civilization. My Elders were taught by Humbatz men, i have some knowledge . i could recommend others that have more, but none of them call the Maya..Mayan..just saying...
