In 2005, I spent a month traveling through the Yucatan peninsula with a Mayan shaman descended from a continuous lineage of Mayan shamans. We visited all the Mayan sites in the Yucatan. Much of his teachings about the cosmology and religious significance of the sites was vastly different from the western colonizer interpretation that is still perpetuated by modern archaeology. In particular, we had a lengthy discussion about the Mayan calendar. To say the west got it wrong is an understatement. Mayans NEVER predicted an "end of the world" in 2012 or in any other time. The shaman explained that, similar to Hindu cosmology, Mayans divided up the flow of time into 24,000 year cycles that break down into two 12,000 year cycles. Each of these is further divided into specific eras. In Vedic cosmology, these eras are called "yugas" and are characterized by specific evolution and devolution of human societies until they degrade entirely and then the cycle begins again with a period of enlightenment. The Mayan calendar simply said that 2012 was the end of a 12,000 year cycle. Not the end of the world.
This is the limitation of documentarians and archaeologists putting these types of conclusions together without consulting actual Mayan shamans descended from the traditions.
Furthermore, one other conversation with this shaman stood out. While at Chichen Itza, NASA had just taken over the site for further study so the main pyramid was restricted to the public. NASA could study it for decades and never get it right, he said definitively. He said "as long as the west continues to view science and religion as separate things, they will never understand Chichen Itza. And they will never understand the Maya." This fundamental difference in the way western empires of the northern hemisphere, steeped in Abrahamic traditions, treat objective science and subjective science- and along with that, science as a whole and religion- as opposites, is the immovable limitation to understanding other cultures, especially those of the global south. Scholar Rajiv Malhotra wrote an excellent book on this topic, titled "Being Different: An Indian Answer to Western Universalism." For those interested in the subject, I can't recommend this book enough.
Shaman and priests are scammers... ask him why he can't read Mayan hieroglyphics or if he can where he learned it... obviously from the archeologists..

Remember it has to get worse to only get better. You feel really shitty before you recover from a cold. And mother earth is doing the same. Each day as whole make look like things are getting worse but that’s where beauty lies because in the midst of the darkness the answer is right there. Trust Mother Earth and the Universal Creator. The more you focus on yourself and learning to balance the ego and conscious as a whole the more good is being added to the world which leads us to a better past/present/future.
The Mayan calendar endowed each specific individual day with a character a personality unique unto itself; just as no two people exactly the same neither was any day ever exactly repeated through out time. Each day had almost it's own consciousness.

There's a confusion here. Although certainly, the stone of the sun is an Aztec calendar, the documentary refers to the Mayan calendar, and that is not exactly a stone but a entire system.
The Maya didn't predict the end of nothing! That was Hollywood BULLSHIT! The maya knew that 2012 was just the end of a era in their long count calendar. That means the end of a 25,000+yrs. cycle. It could be that the Aztec calendar was part of a more integral olméca heritage within the pyramids complex. Mexicas (me-shi-kas), like Romans, used to adopt the conquered peoples culture and religion. Being the chosen people of Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, they used to let the conquered to maintain their culture and their gods were added to the Aztec pantheon and the peoples to the Aztec empire.

So if the Gregorian calendar that we use today was invented 1000 years after the Mayan calendar then obviously the year 2012 would not be the same on both calendars, if the Mayan calendar was created 1000 years before ours then their 2012 was like 1000 years ago, and they were still around long after that.
