To add to your findings, currently there is a bug (and has been since multi-block slopes were added) where 1x2 and 1x4 slopes and their corosponding pyramids are modeled as solid blocks when it comes to whater drag, meaning a hull built with them is basically a brick in terms of the physics engine.
The best way to overcome this this to work out where your water line will sit and use 1x1 slopes below water line, then use multi-block slopes above for the aesthetic.
But great video! brilliant explanation of hull types

Yeah, no simulation of bound laminar flow layer and turbulent detatched layer means the only thing determining drag is impact angle.
The more a d longer pyramids you use the less drag you have.
      Kind of a bummer.

6:58 "Stupidly bad efficiency" - you suddenly measured efficiency wrong.
Excellent video, and I subbed, but if the boats aren't all going the same speed now, you have to compare meters/liter.
    Hull 1 - 12.5m/s, 18.3m/l gets 12.8km in the 17 minutes to burn all it's fuel
    Hull 4 - 18.5m/s, 15.6m/l gets 10.9km in 9.8 minutes to burn all 698 liters
the difference in efficiency isn't as much as your bar graph suggests.
Hull 4 already showed it's the efficiency winner
    Hull 4 - 12m/s, 36m/l gets 25.1km in 35 minutes.
Somewhere between 12m/s and 18 there is a speed that gets you far, fast, without wasting so much fuel in Hull 4

    • @unit0007
      @unit0007 2 роки тому +4

To be fair he was measuring efficiency wrong from the get-go. It just so happened that the speed was a controlled variable, so the distance traveled in an hour happened to remain constant. Fuel efficiency means different things in different context, but in the context of a mission boat, that is used to perform missions where one sets out from point A and travels to point B (some distance away) for the mission, then fuel consumed over distance (or the other way around) is how one measures efficiency, not fuel over time. You're not just trying to maximize your time out on the sea, you're doing a mission.
Also having the engine as a controlled variable does give you the relative positions of the hulls tested (ie. which is more efficient than the other), but it doesn't give you accurate data as to how much more efficient one design is over the other. With less water resistance hull 4 might have been better off with a higher gear ratio, and that might have significantly increased its efficiency, especially at higher speeds.

This video came perfectly timed, almost a bit creepily so!
Just earlier today I modified a few months old boat of mine in Stormworks to replace some of the hull with some 2x1s and 2x2 wedges and such, just to smooth out the hull (kept the EXACT same shape, just made the hull smoother and less "jagged".
In doing so the top speed of the boat went from around 85 kph -> 42 kph. The weight increased by around 100 units (which isnt much), other than that there was just the type of wedges that changed.
It seems that this game treats the 1x1 wedges and pyramids unproportionately different than the 2x1 and 4x1s, kinda seems like the 1x1s have tiny drag in comparison, even when the 2x1s are angled to realisticly create much LESS drag.
Dunno why, but annoys me when i build to please my eyes but still be functional.

all the hulls in stormworks are displacement hulls because the game does not simulate hydrodynamics to push the boat hull out of the water. the only force you have when your boat pitches up under acceleration is the result of your propeller/water jet not been in line with the center off mass. the only way that you have to actually simulate a planning hull is trough pid's and fins to lift the hull out of the water. What you tested on the video it's just different hull shapes that all affect how the boat act under movement because of the water drag simulation of the game, not hydrodynamics.
With that said your explanation to why certain hulls are more efficient in game is not correct, off course when lifting the boat out of the water the drag is reduced and then fuel efficiency and/or speed goes up but that´s it, if you dont have any kind of ride height control(aka hydrofoils). Because of the propeller not being in line with the CoM, it lifts the bow and reduces drag since there is less boat under water. The why some shapes have different behaviors is just because of hull shape under water, a flat button ship in game is much more stable on the roll axis than v button. On the other end the V button shape hull is faster than the flat button.
About the types of hull, you have two main types irl:
The displacement hull that displaces the water like you explained. This types of hull is beneficial on cargo capacity and are generally stable under rough sea conditions.
The planning hull can be explained like a "wing" that trough hydrodynamics lifts the boat out of water reducing drag. basically uses the hull shape to send water down creating a lifting force. One of the more stable planing hulls is a v button shape. This hull is found in yachts and ships not bigger than 20 m since more less past that length the ship becomes too heavy to lift.
You also have semi displacement hulls that are basically a displacement hull that can generate lift under speed

Can you recommend any specific software that is not super expensive for more reliable hydrodynamic simulations? I've worked with DelftShip, which is good for stability and drag calculations, but I miss wave simulations. I also worked with Blender 2.8 with fluid simulation, which is great for the graphics part, but not so much for collecting reliable numerical data. In other words: is there any "cheap" naval architecture software that you can recommend that also includes hydrodynamic 3D simulations, i.e. like a virtual towing tank?

    • @Errors2149
      @Errors2149 4 роки тому +1

Wedges do have a opposite reaction, and can be used to push planing boats out of the water. it is not solely the effect of having a propeller underneath center of mass. i have tested this quite a lot with seaplanes.
no need for hydrofoils. though they certainly are more effective.

if using tail rotor or aircraft propeller you need to tilt them up using robotic hinge and ontop of that have fin ruders under the nose to push it up. heavy rotor has build in pitch that you can use. physics are surprisingly garbage in this Game. Water has the property of Sirup. every block and wedge that isnt the old 1x1x1 has a bug wich makes them have more drag around 33% speed loss on aircraft and boats. they know the bug but dont plan on fixing it same as the 3x3 - 7x7 wheels spazing out as subgrid would take them 6 weeks to rework it pfff so they wont do it. we once hat the chance to make proper windmills using Propellers but they decided to get something else ingame wich you can gues functions to utmost dissatisfaction.
if 1.0 is just as underperforming as the rest of the 3 year of development i call it a scam they cant be that bad or incompetent. 2.3k hours on the game now and around for close to 2 years.

@@cpt.mirones5109 I haven't found tilted propellers very helpful, but I was able to use lift-providing small fins on the bottom of it, which would keep the plane from having an extreme amount of drag on a water takeoff. I think it's a much simpler design that works so much better. i just wish we had thin blocks so I can have a more buoyant plane, or one that, like you said, only uses 1x1 wedges and looks bad.

    What about a bulbous bow?

To be fair, a bulbous bow would probably not make any positive difference in storm works. this is an excellent source for reading on this topic; www.dmsonline.us/limits-bulbous-bows/

i find it important to mention that 1x2 and 1x4 pieces have way higher drag and lower buoyancy then 1x1 pieces
sidenote: this is not realistic but a problem with the games physics engine instead

You also need to take into account the hull drag... If you use 1x1 slopes you'll find a higher performance. For some reason, even if your boat is extremely streamlined, if you use the 2x1 or 4x1 slopes you'll see a drastic increase in drag. The way they calculate drag on those parts is absolutely horrid.

a flat faced craft will do better then one made with 1x2 and 1x4 wedges and their respective pyramids. its stupid. my fastest boat can do 160kmph and its just a box with 1x1 wedges on the front bottom corner about 5 long, 2 mediums prefab engines with a water jet and i go really fast. its stupid

Don’t compare stormworks to real physics. There is no displacement in this game. And ocean physics aren’t near realistic.
