JayEmm, many thanks for this piece. Based on your comments, I have decided to spend the money converting my 2005 HGTS 612 rather than source an alternative manual car, such as a Porsche 992, at greater cost. I just love the manual driving experience over a robotic or auto box. The handling on the 612 is fantastic. It’s just the gearbox that lets it down a bit. I know the cost won’t be reflected in the car’s value, but I am not planning on selling it and am more likely to give it to my son when I am no longer insurable to drive it, which apparently is at 75. So, 15 years to go! I will let you know how it goes.
An underrated car from Ferrari. The novelty of a V12 in it. There's also the old school metal gated gearbox as well. I think that is probably easier to live with than the flappy paddles - despite the heavy clutch.
100% agreed. If I could ever afford a beast mode Ferrari the last thing I’d want would be some lame paddle shifters. Is it dumb to ask if there’s even a clutch w/ those? Give me a classic standard tranny to slam gears and feel the V12. Paddle shifts on Ferarris imo are like gettin to ride a bull, but doing it in 4ft deep water. Still wild, but nowhere near the full experience
I manual swapped my late model Toyota Soarer with the 1JZ-VVTI engine. I added a Supra V160 6 speed, and used all factory manual components including ECU's and the Dashboard from the same model year, factory manual car. It all worked first go, and 1000% the car is better for it being a manual from a driver involvement perspective.
It’s simple - back in the day we were sick of manuals as that’s all we’d had for years: with phrases like F1 GEARBOX, SMG, SSG etc etc we were all excited for new ways of swapping cogs, and paddle changes looked so damned cool. It’s only after we’d had them for a while we realised the vast majority were inferior to manuals, and some were downright shite. It was something new though and that’s why we all went for it.
In my opinion the 612 Scaglietti is probably one of the weakest looking Ferraris of all time - not particularly beautiful (in my opinion) or exciting (in my opinion). White colour does tend to shave off a few years from the car, however, in this case it does very little. Rear of course is freshened up a bit due to the contrasting colours of the taillights and black panels, but the headlights in the body colour age terribly and even more so in white. The best colours probably have to be the darker greys, silver or that blue (also in darker tones and shades) Ferrari originally released the car in.
Great video! I have one of this for the past 10 years and the only let down is the gear change. This should be added to one of my retirement projects! Thanks for sharing the great example! Well-done the owner!
Contemplated trading in my manual 997 C2S for a left hand drive F430 with the F1 box almost 18 months ago. Verdi Ferrari can do conversion to manual on F430 and 599’s but they had a 18 month waiting list. The cost of the work itself at the time was circa £25k. Although the effort and wait would definitely be worth it, I would’ve been stretching myself too much financially and decided to stick with my 911 for now. It’s definitely something I would like to do in the future providing the prices of both the car and the work haven’t shot up ridiculously again. Nice review also 😊
An open gated manual Ferrari has to be better than a robotised manual, 612 is very Colour and Wheel sensitive, paint it TDF Blue, with a tan interior and change the wheels to silver and it’s perfect
Also would never go for a vanquish with the automated manual yet works service does the conversion themselves- what a car that would be and very very rare
In white the car looks actually really good. Normally I don't like the front of the car but in white it kinds of blends in. My respect for the afford to convert the car. Not really an easy task.
Still watching and loving the fact you appear to have taken on board my comment about heel and toe. Whilst you made clear visual reference to it in this video (fine, great) you just mention it in passing at around 13 minutes, instead of bleating on about it. Well done !!!
The video making process is one of constant refinement. As you can imagine I get a lot of feedback, some of it conflicting - but I try to improve things where I can
I have been driving now for 60 years and I always had manual gearboxes in my fun cars, but moved to sequential boxes in my race cars when a win on the day was measured in 100ths of a second in a hillclimb. I had been knocked down to 4th with 3 sequential gearboxes in the 3 places and all of us on the same time until we got to the 100 of a second bit. And now my road cars are all DCG and can live with the heavy traffic without limping at the end of the trip. On some of the more demanding roads in the Queensland hinterland I can get just as much enjoyment from the paddle shift as I hurry the car up the mountain with 3 large bikes behind me that cannot close enough to pass. And when I get to the top and pull over, they pull over too and share the drive.
Really enjoyed that video. In the front driveway, locked out the house currently. What else is a car freak to do, but watch another car freak talk about cars !!
Jay, from what I have heard the 612 conversion is not as challenging as the 599. Something to do with the size of the torque tube and a nasty vibration in 3rd gear (which is present on the OEM installation as well). Great video as always!
I was watching the launch of the manual supra and one bloke said that what was the point of it if the car was slower. I could tell from it that he hasn't realised what cars are actually about
@@comeberza exactly! case in point. a few years ago I tore an ACL and couldnt drive a manual for a while. I had a manual pug 306. my Dad swapped cars with me for a while while I recovered, 325 automatic. Excellent video, highly informative as usual, l have my own F1 transmission 612 Ferrari for sale right now on one of the main UK auction houses online with No reserve 😉
Love the 612s looks even white looks OK, though not my favourite. Then again what petrolhead wouldn't like a like a front engined rear wheel drive V12. Fantastic interiors on these cars they were the range topping car when on sale, and it shows, pure quality finish.
There is a difference between a manual box and some hi tech wizardry, some people want the latest and greatest techno box that changes gear in the blink of an eye and others just want to have fun.
For pure transportation and commuting automatic is better. For someone who actually wants to put in the effort and drive their car to the fullest of its potential, manual is by far better. The thing is, most people don't like driving and want the easiest possible setup without having to put any effort in.
If I could do a manual swap on my Jaguar XKR X100 I would if it was reasonably priced and didn't effect the rest of the car. It can be done but it's silly money to have it done. It's a shame Jaguar didn't offer it from the factory even if it was at a high premium.
yeah the transmission controller integrated with the stock ECU is the problem I think. If you go aftermarket ECU, options open up but you are still probably spending 5k minimum. Jaguar Specialties in the US does relatively affordable swap kits for GM v8s and manual trans, but if I was going that route I'd get an old XJS convertible with a tired engine and swap that instead. I'm in California so old Jags with no rust but fucked engines are pretty common.
I've never seen a 612 in a colour that really suits it, but it certainly wears white well... I do love a white Ferrari... I do love a Ferrari in anything but red.
I think time has been really kind to the looks of the Scaglietti - I think it’s ageing really really well. If I squint, it has hints of a modern, Gen II Ferrari 330. I’d say manual 612s will become true future classics. Ferrari has a habit of doing that. The 348 was absolutely unloved in its day, but now it’s becoming a cult classic and much more desirable (and expensive).
The question of "how much are you willing to pay for a manual swap" is a great one. In 2006, I spent $1500 US converting an SW20 MR2, which was absolutely worth it even with the Camry 2.2 lump we got in the US. Around 2018, I got a quote from a Jag specialist for $10k US to convert any V12 Jaguar XJS that one could drive to their shop. No doubt things are pricier now.
Could you please review a 575M. Everyone forgets 575M , because 550 and 599 are better , but still a detailed review would be enjoyable. Please consider mz suggestion if it is possible. Thanks for reading
The F1 auto is not bad at all to drive and live with. Much easier to learn how to drive properly than the headache and expense to convert to the manual.
Skall-yetti. Manual conversion well worth every penny. Many auto-manual sports car owners would opt for this if specialty shops popped up for this purpose.

Manual gearboxes were described by the current boss of Ferrari as ‘A nostalgic choice’ especially when auto boxes are so good these days. Manual boxes are for pub bores and old people that won’t move on. Jaguar sold seven, yes seven F-types in 2021.
Manual F-Type died in like 2019. If true then these were leftovers. Highlights what you said. Wouldn't be surprised if Jaguar sold more P300s than manual V6s.
GL in Italian sounds like an L, but you touch your palate with your whole tongue instead of just the tip. Anyway scaietti is close enough if you stress the I as it was double, that's how even some Italians say it
Throws me off seeing the E-brake on the left side while the steering wheel is on the right. Is that normal for all right side riders? Or just this modded out horse?
612 is truly a GT car which can easily carry 4 adults for normal usage confortably. It certainly is not for 4 adults cross country trip, in tact not many car can provide enough confort other than Maybach. Enough said, 612 is best fitted with F1 manual transmission for a GT. If you want a hardball sport can, for about the same price, go buy the 599 instead.
I`m waiting for the sporting car manufacturers to realise they are selling entertainment packages and many of their existing and potential customers want a manual. Autos are fine and yes we know they are now often the fastest version but they are boring and tend to give the impression the technology is in control, not the driver. I`ve personally yet to find a clutchless gearchange satisfying regardless of having a lever or paddle to move. Manuals rule.
This is a heavy cruiser, what's the point of the manual? Also the manufacturers have realized the opposite. Manuals are bought today by fringe groups and speculators.
@@nightdriver7216 I guess if the car is used mainly in heavy urban traffic auto is convenient however for those of us to whom a car is more than just a "video game " type experience a manual gearshift is an essential part of that tactile experience and I believe as things get more and more automated and technical things like manual gearboxes are becoming more desired. By the way as a 456 owner (6 spd manual) these V12 cars shrink around you when actually driven on the open road.- we also have a mid engined V8 Ferrari to compare..
JayEmm and Robin (brogenville): Could you expand on the comment that the fuel mapping is still in need of tweaking? Are you required to remove the ECU from the car to reflash it?
Hi bill, yes the two engine ecu’s come out to get reflashed. The only part I got help with was the corrections made to the engine flash files, which is where the ecu whisperer 360trev comes in. Look him up- his exploits in modifying Ferrari ecu’s are the stuff of legend. The 599 MAF’s are much bigger than the 612 MAF’s, and this is first 612 in the world to use them. At the moment the previous maps were all carried over, and just the calibration tables for the new MAF’s spliced in. It just needs a little fuel pulled out in the lower part of the Rev range.
It's a shame that the original buyers of Ferraris are often not like the buyers on the secondary market, meaning they're often not real petrolheads. A proper GT car should have a manual. On the track, where GT cars don't belong, is a little different because nobody wants to money-shift a Ferrari!
Each to their own but white for me is probably the worst colour for a 612, even worse than red - it looks like it should be in Dubai. Big compliments on the manual conversion though, great work.
Love your videos, but please - it‘s Porsche not Porsch, you don’t say Ferrar i.o. Ferrari as well … best regards from some guy actually living in a „Ferdinand-Porsche-Street“ in Germany! Keep up your good work 👍
Now I'm not the 'gem purist' type. The manual swap is brilliant. What I can't stand though is the idea the owner painted it white. You can paint a Ferrari, sure, but pick a good colour.

Good!!
Would Ferrari accept this car for maintenance after you convert it?
The 612 was only offered in RWD form, never in AWD, or I just heard wrong? haha
He said the later cars were four wheel drive as in the FF
@@JD-eo7dr But they didn't, only the FF and the Gtc4 Lusso did.
@@alfcappuccino I think jay was referring to the FF, as a later car in Ferrari rather than later 612s
@@alfcappuccino that's what I meant. They came later than the 612 didn't they 🤦
What if we call it a 612 spaghetti 🍝😂.
How about putting an F12 dual clutch auto in it.
That would be a ludicrous amount of work
@JayEmmOnCars I bet it would be good though. F430 and 599 as well.
do it only if you have narrow feet because it will get crowded down there
WKZ 2000 LOL love it!!
Just missing the 'A' 'N' then 'E' & 'R' and it's perfect.
Love this theme James - keep it up.
Each to their own but white for me is probably the worst colour for a 612, even worse than red - it looks like it should be in Dubai. Big compliments on the manual conversion though, great work.
I agree totally
Love your videos, but please - it‘s Porsche not Porsch, you don’t say Ferrar i.o. Ferrari as well … best regards from some guy actually living in a „Ferdinand-Porsche-Street“ in Germany! Keep up your good work 👍
Now I'm not the 'gem purist' type. The manual swap is brilliant. What I can't stand though is the idea the owner painted it white. You can paint a Ferrari, sure, but pick a good colour.
Was it worth it ? Oh yes and how great it's sounds 😉
