  • With the opening of the new platform 3a westbound Central Line trains calling at Stratford (regional) station in London now open their doors on both sides.
    In the video a National Express class 321* train is also seen passing through the other side of the older shared island platform.
    *some viewers think that its a Class 317 rather than 321.

      yes, and even though they are also held together with sticky tape they will be around for many years to come, as TfL cant afford to replace them. It is possible (not 100% certain) that they will soon be retractioned - which means that they will have new motors and control gear, as technology has advanced very much since they were first built. If this happens they will also sound different.

    @dctim well there is better access to several station exits and the low level lines (Jubilee + DLR Stratford Intl branch) from the new platform 3a.
    But, I think that the most important motivating factor was (as you suggested) the Olympic Games and handling large crowds of people going home who must first travel towards Central London - and then interchange with other services.

  • @sanders2378
    @sanders2378 12 років тому +1

    Stratford is a very busy station during the rush hours. However, as you suggest, the platform was funded by the Olympic preparations. The doors are being closed more quickly now, probably because people are used to it, some drivers shut them all at the same time.

      It's a class 317. The class 313, 315 and 317 look all similar and it's meant to be a class 313 but it was a class 317 instead. These trains are rare at Stratford.

    Why don't they just play the door closing announcement once and close doors on both sides at the same time or one after another? Here in Singapore, at stations with platforms where doors open on both sides, the door closing announcement is played once, then doors on both sides close, usually one immediately after the other but sometimes at the same time.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  10 років тому +8

      I think that sometimes the doors are simultaneously closed on both sides, but its not optimal because the train driver cannot watch both sides at the same time. This would be for safety issues, such as someone becoming trapped, a family being separated - especially important if small children are involved.

      Hmmm... I noticed recently here in Singapore that some trains have started to play the door closing announcements twice when doors on both sides are open too. It's a rather inconsistent thing though - some do it, some don't. I think it's up to the train operator, but hopefully some day the train company can standardise on this.

    It's impossible to open or close both sides simultaneously on NYC Subway trains. When the train stops, the Train Operator(T/O) (in charge of driving the train to the destination, in the first car) has to press the left/right enabler button to give the Conductor(C/R) (responsible for door operation) the ability to open the doors. Most of our trains have a full width cab where the C/R can go to the other side without switching cars.The door controls are on the same side as the doors they control.

    @phimmai1 no - passengers board and alight from both sides.
    On the older platform there is cross platform interchange with a different rail service, whilst the new platform is better for changing trains with the Jubilee Line and Docklands Light Railway.
    BUT...
    It may be that during the 2012 Olympic Games some type of passenger flow control is used. I've heard this suggested as an idea.

    @TheCatapultTV Nor at Golders Green (I'm not sure about Arnos Grove). The reason is probably related to the platforms being used for terminating trains and the doors only opening on one side to let people out onto the correct platform for an onward train and then in from the correct platform for trains tarvelling in the opposite direction.

    free for all !!! it depends where you want to go after leaving the train, there is a range of different lines going out of Stratford or you might want to leave the station for the town or Westfields. One side is easier for say Jubilee and Docklands, the other side for National Rail or Westfields.

    This happens a:
    1. Stratford on the westbound central line

    As far as i’m aware of, there is nothing else.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  2 роки тому

      Golders Green northbound use to be like this too.
      There are also few stations where there are platforms on both sides but normally these are tracks used by terminating trains and therefore the doors are only opened on one side at a time.
      Trains which terminate at Barking only open their doors on one side and when the Barking Riverside London Overground extension opens the platform on the left which is shared with Goblin trains will close. Instead the Goblin trains will use platforms 7 and 8.

      3. I know they kept Stratford, I went on a westbound central line last Monday.
      4. I went on the eastbound district line at Barking yesterday so I know that is still there
      5. Lets get back on topic of this comment
      6. If they can open on both sides then why only 1 side opens even if its only terminating trains?
      7. ‘Trains that terminate at Barking…’
      Do you mean the H&C or the London Overground? With the eastbound district, you always know it never stops on platform 3 (the terminus one) because it keeps going to Upminster (unless its a Barking train). If its an eastbound H&C or district terminating at Barking, they have to stop at platform 2. If its the London Overground, it will always stop on platform 1 where doors open on 1 side only.
      If only on platform 3, thr doors open on 3 sides
      If only on platform 4, the doors open on 4 sides
      And so on

But this would be useful at stations such as Bank where passengers could alight on one side and board from the other. At busy times splitting the passenger flows in this way should reduce stop dwell times.

      rayne Cheong only the tube trains - the subsurface trains are much larger! Its down to money; when the first of the small profile tube trains were built the companies which built them had to fund everything themselves and smaller tunnels were less expensive to build. btw, the Glasgow Subway trains are even smaller than London's tube trains. Other cities which have two sizes of underground / metro / subway trains include Berlin in Germany and Budapest in Hungary.
