FDU didn’t even win their conference tourney. They got in because the team that beat them in the final wasn’t allowed to play in the tourney because they just became a D1 school
Who beat FDU in the conference tourney??

At least UVA didn't have their best player. Purdue was just flat out beaten with no excuse
Edey took ONE shot attempt in the final 12 minutes of the game...I mean...WHAT? Yeah. They 100% deserved to lose.

@@arjunlidder3361 That's extremely arguable, in the National Championship season Hunter, Guy and Jerome scored like 63 points. Yes Hunter was like the best player at UVa.

@@brucecampbell4528 imo I think Kyle Guy is better but still Hunter was very good and a key part of the offense
who cares. . It's still a 16 over a 1 regardless. You can't put an asterisk!
For those that don't know this. Purdue has been eliminated by a 13 seed, a 15 seed, and now a 16 seed 3 YEARS IN A ROW! The biggest chokers in the NCAA

Real talk!! Chokers!!
That’s B1G basketball for you
Feels like whatever seed the committee thinks they should give Purdue they should make it at least two worse
FDU:
- Ranked Above 300 in Kenpom the whole year
- Didn't win their conference tournament
- Didn't win their conference regular season title either
- is in the NEC which ranks 32/32 for D1 conferences in the country in kenpom
- Went 4-22 Last year
- A first year coach that transitioned from D2
-Average height of players is 6'1"
- Ranked 359 in Defense in Kenpom
Only got into the tourney on a technicality, because Merrimack was ineligible to play. Incredible upset.
Fun fact that I don’t think anyone knows: Last year when they went 4-22 they were the 6th worst team in D1 via kenpom and were the FIRST team to participate and get eliminated in a conference tournment game last year(they lost on February 28th so they didn’t even experience the month of march that year!!!)
@@bbbready685Actually I DID hear about it from your earlier comment.
Also: FDU LOST THEIR CONFERENCE TOURNEY FINAL
They're only there because Merrimack is still in their four-year wait period going from D-II to D-I.
That is a big part of what makes this so improbable.
On top of that they played a First Four game already against Texas Southern which actually in this scenario turned out to be a momentum push.
Wow, just wow
BUT, Purdue coming into this game, already had a reputation for losing to double digit seeded teams. The lost to a #15 LAST year.
So I don't think this was bigger than UMBCs upset.
@@MegaChallanger Except Virginia also had a reputation for historical flameouts, especially the Chaminade game.
I still remember Virginia's comeback story; the first school ever to be knocked out by a 16th seed, then the next year won the championship.
Really hope this is us. We were knocked out on that run so it would be pretty cool.
Man, you talking about that as if it was 30 years ago 😂 “I still remember”
Because the were the ONLY team to lose the a 16 seed lol
i mean purdue has been knocked out by double digit seeds for three straight years so if that was gonna happen for them i think it would have happened a year ago lol
@@bozoman7954 it won’t Purdue always chokes they won’t win for a long time
Not a terrible take, but UVA was the #1 OVERALL seed that year, and got blown out by 20 by a 16 seed.
Yeah, but height matters. If you think beating a taller team overall is easier then idk. I know for a fact umbc was always a sleeper and just got to the 16 seed to win it. FDU is from the NEC conference who only really pulls high d1 talent after injuries or no desire for pro ball. Also, the dude who scored 19 was a d2 baller. Not that its saying much but Low mid d1 is really different cause I have competed against multiple d1 mid/low level players and they don’t compare to national televised teams.
@@YoLoBrOtHeR beating a taller team isn’t easier at all, but beating the #1 overall seed let alone blowing them out is much more difficult in my opinion. Virginia was also taller than UMBC, but obviously didn’t have a Zach Edey
@@Mav0011 in the end, you are still #1 Virginia. Deandre Hunter, no Deandre Hunter, you should NEVER lose to a 16 seed and the #1 overall, let alone get embarrassed by 20.

I doubt Purdue will win the title next year like Virginia did.
If Eady returns and Purdue’s guards improve following this debacle, Purdue will have a shot at it. But of course those are big ifs. Eady may not return and those guards may simply not be that good.
Absolutely agree! FDU didnt even win it’s conference, highest spread in an upset win, won a play-in game, Purdue had its full roster, and the shortest team in the tournament! They have to make a documentary on this game!
All Chuck had to say was Purdue lost to a 16 seed...that didn't win their conference championship.....just let that sink in.....FDU only got in because the champion Merrimack wasn't eligible.
To add to Barkley's point, UMBC was also underseeded. They were not a normal "16 seed" in 2018. They probably should have been a 14 or so. But FDU was a legit 16 seed, based on talent and conference. Absolutely a much bigger upset this time.
Honestly Charles has a point, but the fact UMBC was the 1st to do it, I have to give them the nod. The fact they blew out UVA who was the overall number one seed was improbable. Now if FDU makes it to the Sweet 16, then FDU will be remembered more than UMBC
@TheSportsGuru Stanford was missing star players in that 1998 game.
Can you imagine ever going to Purdue now 😂
Chuck is always 100% honest. It's a needed thing in today's society.
That's a good context regarding Virginia vs UMBC. Kinda shows that it's fairgame regardless of rankings
Objectively, a play #16 seed is worse than a straight #16 seed
wrong. a 16 is still a 16
@@jamedlock83 The 16th seed play in games pit the 4 worst teams that qualified against each other. Thats how the bracket works.
Crazy thing is the year UVA won it all I’m pretty sure they were losing to the 16 seed by 14 points 😭
By point spread. By complete seeding (as FDU was the 68th ranked team, last place). It's a legitimate case and not just recency bias.

He has a point. Also UMBC I don't think played a play in game.
Charles just likes to be different. . He's wrong. . . A 16 is still a 16 no matter which way you cook at it.
UMBC could've been the 1st 16th seed to make the sweet 16, they only lost to 9th seed Kansas State by 4 points
Yep, they were underseeded. The parity that we now have in D1 is ridiculous and also crazily fun.
Of course it's a bigger upset, DeAndre was out.
Indeed, as was stated by Sir Charles.
Bring Chuck back to Inside the NBA ASAP
He and the others will be back after the tournament. But I agree - if I weren't worried about overworking them, I'd want them to do both!
Both games were huge upsets. UMBC won by 20 points! It's one thing to win and another to blowout a 1 seed.

I see what chuck saying and he may be right but any 1 seed even without there best player should beat a 16 seed but FDU is a bigger upset cus they didn’t even win their conference tourney
I had Purdue losing to Florida Atlantic in the second round exactly because of the way they played tonight.
Wayyyy too tight and bad guard play.
FDU should have never been in that game but when they were given life you could literally see their confidence go up and the pressure start building for Purdue.
FDU didn't even win their conference tournament. They only got in because the team that won wasn't eligible due to a transition period rule the NCAA has regarding teams going from Division II to Division I. And they were a play in game and had to play just two nights before to even get to Purdue. So Purdue should of been fresher. Crazy upset. I didn't expect Purdue to get passed 2nd round though, but they even let my expectations down.
Clark Kellogg sure likes to hear himself speak. Chuck and Kenny couldn’t get a word in.
FDU wasn’t even supposed to be there. The optics of this one was even more shocking. Greatest upset in history, either this or 2007 App State over Michigan. I can’t decide.
The thing is, the stakes were so low for Michigan that day. Insane upset, but it came at a pretty meaningless time. Purdue expected to get to the Final Four and lost in the opening round to a collection of former D2 players who came in second place in the worst athletic conference in D1 sports.
They deserve a movie
YUP!!!
UMBC was the bigger upset. Virginia was the number 1 overall best team and heavily favored to win it all. They averaged 53 points allowed per game and no team scored 70+ on them all season. UMBC scored 53 on them in the second half alone and beat them by 20. Purdue was an incredibly weak 1 seed that was beat by Indiana twice and almost maryland twice. I don't think the argument of not having their best player holds because they still would have lost that night
A whole regular season of basketball and conference tourney with deandre hunter suggests they wouldn’t have lost that night with him…
FDU were even heavier underdogs considering the point spread and were ranked much worse overall in D1 than UMBC was in 2018.
UMBC was +20 spread. FD was +24 spread. FD bigger upset.
yeah but umbc won by 20
@@goldenorange1947 they was making bank shots from the locker room.
Go New Jersey! Lived in Newark and Jersey City, and the smaller colleges like St. Peter's and Seton Hall and FDU are a credit to New Jersey. Beat those larger schools with the supposedly better teams!
Chuck is right
Barkley and Smith are my favorites!!!
100% correct. But calling a spade a spade this is a fireable offence. Painter was outreached period.
Not only all that, but FDU did not even win their conference tournament. They got in because the conference champion was transitioning from division two to division one and a rule states they have to wait four years before making the tournament so FDU got in
It actually takes 4 years to transition.
@@tylerpuszczewicz2535 your right I missed typed
Princeton-Georgetown 1989 was still the biggest upset even if they didn't win.
I love March
As Michigan Alum this really makes me happy.
Can we talk about how bad of a coach Matt Painter is
Yeah, we really should tbh. They never played a zone and you have a talented big man. I don’y think he touched the ball after his missed free throw around the 8 min mark.
He always has a decent team & can never make it out the 1st round- he’s not good at coaching 😳
and AP put them at #1 numerous times. so yes definitely a bigger upset. no excuses for this but the worse ranked #1 in a while
It’s March and it’s Madness
Whether Virginia had injured players or not that has nothing to do with a 16 beating a #1 UMBC is still a small college compared to Virginia
Incredible game and win
We not discrediting UMBC defeating Virginia! They STILL beat the No 1 OVERALL seed
Purdue recruiting took a huge step back today
Not when you just won the big 10 and the big 10 tournament.
@@steez8287 Nobody will remember that part from this year.
@reubensandwich9249 the big 10 will. Plus Purdue ranks 40th in recruiting. We develop players, not recruit star talent.
This means Purdue is going to win the championship next year just like Virginia
That upset is still relevant regardless of the best player being there or not. NEXT MAN UP! UVA didn’t play like a 1-seed and it cost them. No excuses
Chuck always points out great info which has others agree without doubting him.
I love Coach Painter, he's a great recruiter and developer of talent, but his game plans and in-game adjustments are always bad. He is stuck on man to man mentality. He plays a zone with that size, FDU loses by 25. FDU used their speed to spread us out and dissect our defense. They shot below 20% from 3 point, until the last 3 minutes of the game.
Hitting points
Its OBJECTIVELY a bigger upset, and LOGICALLY its a bigger upset too. Because Purdue was healthy Virginia wasnt. I still dont think that was why Virginia lost. But still
Plus Purdue was a bigger favorite in Vegas than UVA was and UMBC was way better than FDU by all metrics
Indeed. I made money on these dudes. Glad to see purdue get kicked out.
At what point did his injury occur prior to the tournament
Both were magical
Jason Kidds Cal team being beaten by a 15 seed was a bigger upset
A 20 point beating is much more than this year’s 16 over a 1.
Dis was, I agree
I agree with Charles. This is the best
This means Purdue wins the National Championship next season. Get down on a future bet whenever it’s first available
Maybe.
No
16 seeds won’t be slept on, beat tourney on the planetv
I do see both of them of upsets. 16 seeds both took down 1 seeds.😑
So the question is how would’ve Merrimack faired against this team
Virginia was the top seeded team in all of college basketball in 2018 and lost in blowout fashion. Is recency bias really masking something literally 5 years ago?
No ways. Umbc beat Virginia, who the next year were champions.
Yup
Sir Charles is right again!!
I must’ve been watching something else because I don’t remember Hunter being the best player in college any year🤣. Isn’t that the same year Zion, Ja and Barrett were in college?
Fair point but Hunter wasn't even a starter that year.
But UVA lost by 20 points!
Purdue is the Atlanta Falcons of college basketball
It's still Virginia, but it's awfully close. Umbc beat Virginia like a drum and that's the difference.
100 %
I'd say Virginia is a bigger upset only because they lost by 20. Other than that FDU has them beat in every category
UMBC was hitting literally everything they threw up that night. They were hitting three's well beyond the arc all night long.
On that night they could have beaten any team in the tournament. And yeah not having DeAndre Hunter was a huge handicap.
@@CC-jl7jz FDU (the smallest team in D1) straight up out fought and out played a much bigger team with a 7'4'' giant who will probably win national player of the year. This was literally David vs. Goliath.
@BlaugranaFCB1 great points that's why this game was a much bigger upset than UMBC-Virgina. UMBC played great but take any teams beat player away and that team isn't the same.

Purdue was not even ranked when the season started. Starting two freshmen as guards who got worn out after the midway point of the season. And never getting any calls.
Both equal
Prior to the tournament FDU was in the 300's in NET
Umbc beat Virginia by 20 gimme a break Chuck
Both were bad losses but Purdue's is worse because they were at full strength while Virginia didn't have their best player and Virginia at least rebounded to win the natty the following year (which I highly doubt Purdue will be able to replicate).
Purdue is such an embarrassment
Pg play was horrible for Purdue
In a honestly Purdue just in themselves being Purdue is kinda an asterisk, nothing but disappointment from that program
Whothe heck is FDU? It was FAU that beat Purdue, not FDU.
Fairleigh Dickinson.
i think fdu makes a bigger run
The guy 2nd to the left sounds and looks like Charles Barkley on Adderall
Charles, stop your idiocy. UMBC win was like no other. 20 pts win over a #1 will remain the biggest upset.
Eh....Purdue was the weakest 1-seed in a very weak year overall. I think UMBC is still a bigger upset. Hunter was the best player the next year, but not that year.
For me, the biggest upset in tourney history is still George Mason over Connecticut in the Elite Eight in 2006.
Purdue wetting the bed as always. played healthy and all. Virginia didnt have Deandre Hunter that game, so this 16-1 upset is definitely more impressive.
Listen idc if they had their best player or not a loss is a loss. Give credit where credit is due. Virgina lost to a 16th seed fair and square.
Purdue last 3 Tournaments Lost to a 13, 15, and 16 seed. This is NOT the kind of history you wanna be making as a program
And he would be right.
💯 Charles BIGGEST upset ever .
Deandre Hunter was a bench player that year...granted he was 6th man in ACC, but he was not the player he was.
All I’ll say is that I had Purdue losing to FAU in the second round anyway. Whereas, I had Virginia going far back in 2018
Hunter was absolutely not "the best player in the country" in 2018. He didn't even start for Virginia that year! It's so infuriating that Charles Barkley knows nothing about college basketball and nobody else there wants to hurt his feelings by telling him he's wrong.
