I figured one day a 16 seed could upset a 1 seed and steal a game. But to embarrass them by 20 points is mind blowing. UMBC was in complete control
I agree. And UVA has been set back 25 years by this loss. It will take UVA basketball as long to recover from this disaster as SMU football has taken to recover from the Death Penalty.

Virginia allowed an average of 53 points per game this season. They allowed 53 points in the second half against UMBC.
They didn't let up 70pts all season.

Virginia, the #1 team in the nation nearly the entire season, the team that was heavily favored to win it all, gets creamed by the 16 seed in the first round by 20 points. This game just proved that anything can happen.
GuessWhoNot or the ACC is full of itself thinking it is the best conf in the world.
Chill out. Virginia wasn't heavily favored to win it all. The UCONN Women are an example of "heavily favored". There are a half dozen teams with similar odds as Virginia.
And Virginia lost one of their best players right before the tournament.

As a Kentucky fan I'm just sad that it didn't happen to Duke, Kansas or UNC; though they're a 2 seed this Year.

This....Truly. I almost have a hard time calling it an UPSET, because after Halftime at which it was tied, it was never even close!
If you think about it ... that’s the only way that can actually go down, it has to be a blowout, in a close game the experience of the bigger program (Virginia) would’ve pull them thru
And think about this... Virginia was overall top 1 seed AND UMBC was the last bottom 16 seed... the very last won against very top
My favorite call from this game, one that captures this whole game is when the score is 58-44 and Virginia throws the ball away and the announcer says “what has happened to Virginia?” and then UMBC goes down and drains a three.

I will never forget watching this game. I literally couldn't believe what I was seeing. Any other game this lopsided I would have turned the TV off. It was like I just couldn't fathom that a 16 seed was blowing out a 1 seed. It seemed like any minute UVA would go on a run and come back. But every single time Virginia scored, UMBC would just got a 3. Incredible. It wasn't until like 4 minutes left that I realized it was really happening.
I vividly remember watching this game on TV and reminding myself not to get my hopes up. I’d seen so many 16v1 games where the 16 seed looked good for most of the game, but the 1 seed always won without fail. This was such a beat down tho, I couldn’t believe it.
In hindsight Virginia wasn’t built to “go on a run and come back.” This team played a style of basketball that they would slow the game down and control the clock, which depended on their ability to make stops on defense. Instead, UMBC exploited Virginia’s big, slow play and ran away with this game.
UMBC played their hearts out they deserved to win this game, anything is possible as long as you believe

The greatest upset in basketball history. Right here, right now.
Virginia is arguably on the wrong end of the 2 biggest upsets in modern NCAA basketball history - this one, and the loss to Chaminade in the early 80's when Virginia was ranked #1 with Ralph Sampson.
Don u don't even need to go back that far. 2 years ago they got upset by the 10 seed Syracuse as a 1 seed.
They've lost plenty of big games, but the one last night and the one to Chaminade (only #1 to ever lose to a non Division 1) are historic. I wish I could remember where I saw a UVA guy yapping about how Duke and UNC were over and UVA was now the top program in the ACC.

The best part about this upset is everyone won. UMBC had one of the most legendary games of all time, and Virginia redeemed themselves by winning it all the next season.
I'm not sure winning it all redeemed getting blown out by 20 to UMBC. Definitely not for the seniors who ended their careers that way.

What I loved about watching this live is UMBC had a 14 point lead with 4 minutes to go and everyone’s like “nah, UVA is gonna pull it off” it’s not even close. 3 minutes to go, and “the comeback starts now”. 2 minutes “alright this time they’ll start the comeback”. 1 minute everyone’s like “it’s not over yet!”

Was so lucky to see this live. We always knew it would happen but not in this way. Virginia got blown out by UMBC and then followed it up by winning the National Championship next year. A great story all around this way for everyone.

Yessir! Wish people around the country could just visit the campus and see the athletics “facilities” these players had! Idk I’d youre alum but I graduated five years ago and if people knew just how big a difference in resources UMBC and uva are they’d understand just how remarkable this was! These players shared their gym during practice with the walk/jog class they offered! People got more hyped about the chess team than sports!
Wow. Before the game i said to my dad, hey i think that if any 16 has a chance at winning this year, its UMBC because of Virginias playing style. I said if they can speed the game up, they can win. My dad said teams like duke have tried that and failed. Then i said, well if UMBC gets up a lot, the cavaliers wouldnt know how to try to come back by going and scoring quikly. Turns out i was right!

5th year anniversary of the game that put my alma mater on the map. Retriever forever
College basketball just has too much great talent out there for all the big programs to get all the good players. The fact that these smaller schools don't have the one and done players helps them a lot in that they have great teamwork and it was just a matter of time before a 16 seed defeated a 1 seed.

Virginia fan here, 1 year later, finally felt prepared to watch the highlights of this game for the first time, and man, it still hurts like crazy. As painful and horrible as that was, though, I want to say thank you to UMBC. You guys taught us just how fleeting success is, to hold it, as Bennett says, "with open hands." You taught us how to handle that level of devestation, you gave us about the most motivation anybody could give, and here we are in the Final 4. We went from the greatest upset in NCAA Tournament history to winning maybe the greatest game in NCAA Tournament history. Wouldn't have it any other way.

FDU brought me back to this.
Earlier that year, I went to a college hockey game and noticed a banner of an opposing school in the rafters that caught my attention. It was the head of a puppy, with UMBC above it. I likened it to the University of My Buddy Chris! I ordered a t-short of it online the next day. About a month later, when the office bracket came out, and I saw them in there,. It was serendipity. I picked them and my office laughed. Went to a club concert that night, and during the opening bands started getting texts of score updates. It was awesome. Nobody understood why I was pumping my fist during a horrendous opening act, but it was a night I won't forget. Thanks UMBC!

I love how every time Virginia scored. The announcers would be like ok here we go their getting a rhythm. Then UMBC would immediately smack a 3 lol
I remember thinking the whole game Virginia would turn on the jets, and reality didn't fully hit me until about five minutes left.
The bananas thing about this game is that UMBC dropped 53 points in the second half on one of the top defenses that year. Virginia never had a chance coming out of halftime.
