    You want your discharge switched over because it also sits on your own conscious. You may have done more good than bad in your service. And you don't want to feel bad about your decision to go/join regardless of the circumstances of why you did it.

    Most people join the military because they've reached a low in their lives and believe the Armed Forces is the answer. When I enlisted in the Navy, I was a high school grad, with average grades, attending college part time while working a string of dead - end jobs. I was living at home at the time and frequently fought with my parents about my future. One day, i got so depressed about my current situation that I went straight to the Naval recruiting office. I took the TABE test, physicals and signed all the documents. Before I knew it, I was on my way to a new life of travel and adventure - or so I thought.
    Per my original contract, I was supposed to be stationed in Japan for my first tour. By the end of NTC, I went to the dispatch station to retrieve my orders to report to San Diego West Pac Fleet. The petty officer at the desk told me that those orders were cancelled and that I would have to pick another duty station. At that point, I realized that I had been screwed and to avoid blowing off at the lady, I told her to pick one for me. VA was one and I can't remember the other. However, both were stateside and not what I originally signed up for. The whole reason I joined the military was to travel abroad. Instead, I got railroaded and ended up at Norfolk, VA. To say they least, my military career was soured from the start and never improved. After a string of "behavioral" problems, I was diagnosed with Axis 1 and Axis 2 mental disorders and discharged under OTH. Despite the positive aspects, joining the military (along side taking out federal student loans) was one of the worst decision of my life.
    To summarize, doing business with the U.S. govt did not pan out well for me. I did everything I was required to do and yet, I did not receive just compensation whether it be in the form of serving at my agreed upon duty station or a guarantee of gainful employment for completing my degree. If I had to do it all over again, I would have requested guaranteed placement at my requested duty station of choice IN WRITING, signed and sealed and had it placed in my enlistment records from the start and NOT TAKE OUT STUDENT LOANS. Truthfully, I was a good sailor but t's hard to maintain when you cannot trust your superiors to keep their word and few of them ever did.

      For anyone wondering- The only way you can still get your GI Bill with an General Discharge is if you completed your first contract honorably, then re-enlisted and got kicked out during your second term. Basically you completing your first enlistment contract honorably would entitle you to GI bill benefits. Now if you get a General Discharge during your initial enlistment term then you would NOT be entitled to the GI Bill, but you could still get VA disability compensation, VA loan, etc.

    Only thing a honorable discharge affects is gi bill. You cant get the gi bill benefits if your diacharge is gen under honorable. I did two enlistments. One was honorable 3 and a half years the 2nd was general under honorable conditions. You can get everything else. Gen under honrable is virtually the same. So as long as you serve 3 years honorably you get the gi bill. I have every benefut that a honorably discharged vet has due to my first enlistment. But if my 1st enlistment was general under honorable conditions then no gi bill education benefits. According to the department of veterans affaira and any other fedeal agency a gen under honorable conditions discharge will give you the same points when. Applying for federal employ ment.

      frenchlift22 Just apply for a job. Go on USAJobs.gov have some education and you will be surprised on what the outcome will be. If you are a disabled vet 30% or more even better. When applying for the jobs they have a questionaire about if you have experience or know the job. Just answer the questions on the questionnaire like your an expert or you will not get referred to the next level for possible interview candidates. They key is just get in the federal government. Regardless of the position and you can move around from there. As long as you qualify for the job you have a shot. Once you get the interview you have a 50% chance of getting hires.

    • @unodos2007
      @unodos2007 5 років тому +26

      It doesn’t mean they didn’t earn it. Some of these people worked very hard but ran into an unfortunate circumstance or had a crappy chain of command. There are way too many different types of situations to group them all in one “scum bag” category

      People with that type of mindset are the reason why active duty and veteran suicide rates are so high. To assume there’s no such thing as an extenuating circumstance in every negative discharge is not only closed minded, but also punitive and damaging. Life is not black and white, however, the lens of the DoD is. I knew a girl that was raped, literally RAPED by one of her superiors while she was in the service and didn’t report it out of fear of persecution and embarrassment. The trauma she went through negatively impacted her performance and she was subsequently discharged with an OTH for poor performance/misconduct. She fought harder than anyone i’ve ever seen to keep going and they still crucified her. Is she a scumbag? Is she not deserving to have her story heard and considered? I’m sorry if I’m coming off as shrewd but there are always 2 sides of every story. The fact that there’s a process that enables the other side of the story to be heard and considered is a good thing, not a bad thing. The people who are truly undeserving of a discharge upgrade will not receive one. Plain and simple.
