I recently used the Scheps 73, as my sole in-the-box EQ, on an entire mix, and it just sounds phenomenal! It intuitively allows you to mix well. …Easiest EQ to work with is what I'm saying.
I like the comparisons offered by the continuity of sound on the organ. It allows for a far more definitive A/B comparison. Great demo on how to use the Scheps Russ, well done.
Very nice review Russ. The EQ section of this plugin is good but I wanted to try running drums through the drive circuitry in this emulation. Its actually quite incredible how much "color" it adds to your drums just by sending the drums in parallel into the drive. I posted a video of it if anyone is interested. Thanks for this review Russ. Ur awesome.
I'm with you but most people can't relay hear much difference on UA-cam.. I know how they work but here I have a hard time hearing when you tweak the preamp knob..
it's interesting how different the 12K shelf and the 10K Mid Band sound from each other . It seems the shelf brings other bands from octaves below 12K thus quite aggressive . Not referring to the vid , I own the plug-in
There's a lot to said be said about people imagining things...but then is youtube really the place to be comparing audio....It's a bit like heading to the blind school and asking them to pick a colour.
For the slight difference the preamp makes, I can't see myself spending $100 for it. I already have the V Series plugs and I use them constantly. I don't think this 73 can make a huge difference in my work.
The Hammond sounds like an NI B4 vst instrument with it's leslie sim to me. Very likely because it is. Definitely not a real vintage Hammond wich is pure magic. The saturation (both from the recorded signal and the added drive) is just digital rasp, not a creamy tube drive. I'm afraid there will be generations growing up now who don't know how a real Hammond sounds.

The Scheps version seems to have a little bit of extra "air" at the very top end of the shelving treble range. Could probably tweak the existing V3 a bit more on the settings to get it to match.
After stening to lots of 1073 preamp plugins, I have yet to hear one that actually simulates the sound of those transformers in action. We all know that sound that doesn't have a word attached in English when you sing/talk into a mic with the preamp set at around 35. Maybe I've missed one. On sale the EQ is worth a try but preamps (not just this one), hardware!
If you want that 1073 sound, you need to get a 1073. Not to knock this plugin, as I think it's great. In fact, I use it all the time. But the only way to get that "sound" is by actually owning the hardware.
Is there anything you don't like Russ? There are several people over on the DUC who would disagree with you on how good this plug is. Nasty issues with the preamp and drive controls; anything more than a minimum setting and things get nasty sounding real quick.
I like complaing people ...they are always like a pin in my ass:)If you don't like it buy NEVE hardware:)that's pretty simple:)....don't be pebble man and try to be more constructive and open for innovations:)That's change your point of view:)
I don't like snarky comments based on not watching a video or at least not listening to what I said "it's up to you if you buy it" How are those apples?
Pro Tools Expert I did watch the video before making my comments. And I did hear what you said about it being up to the listener to buy it or not. The thing I was getting at is you almost never give a bad review or point out possible problems with anything. Whereas people on the DUC who don't get things for free have different opinions and tend to be a bit more straightforward.
***** Your criticism is fine and perhaps justified, but when you mix it with a personal attack, you'll find yourself running along a never-ending wall rather quickly ... And if you can't make a good record using plugins this good then you likely have other problems ...
Ain't nobody gonna give a crap in a mix. There's us getting all anal about something you have to squint to notice, when absolutely nobody else would notice or give a crap. Shelling out on plugin after plugin, kidding ourselves it's going to add some magic to the track, when most will listen on ear buds, in the car, or a frickin Alexa mono speaker, while in another room. More emphasis should be on the tune/song, than an infinitesimal whiff of saturation on that bass guitar. It's like those blind taste tests, where people pick the cheap one because it has a bit more sugar salt and fat in it. If you need all these plugins to make your track sound good, you are no recording engineer.
Why do people assess this or any plugin based on a UA-cam review. You CANNOT assess its performance/sound from poorly compressed UA-cam audio. Get a demo version, try it yourself before you make smart arse, ill informed comments that it's simply crap and doesn't sound different to the V-EQ. The only way to assess it is with your own ears and your own music...
1, you're assessing an EQ plugin, not a compressor. 2, if you're looking at this then you know what you're buying and what to expect. 3, even with UA-cam quality you should hear the difference between the 2 plugins.
Yes, you can hear a difference but a compressed version (this comment was 2014 and UA-cam have gone a long way to refining their compression becasue UA-cam is now the largest music distributor on the planet). Demoing a plugin is still the best way to assess it properly. Especially using your own material. I still use the Scheps and the UAD 1073 in most mixes.

Why not simply chain the Waves NLS (flip to Nevo emulation) with the V3?
Thank you for this wonderfully thought out review and comparison!
Great stuff. I know it's a few years old but still kickin'! Thanks!
Agreed! Much love! Checkout my stuff if ya can!
had an ad for the scheps 73 for this video, I'll be ordering off your ad ha
I'm with you but most people can't relay hear much difference on UA-cam.. I know how they work but here I have a hard time hearing when you tweak the preamp knob..
I prefer to use the VEQ-3, but the Scheps is great on stuff like acoustic piano and strings, for example.
Love it... love it thanks for great review Russ:)
Is Waves Scheps 73 worth owning if you already have Fab Filter Pro Q2? Thanks, nice job.
Very good demo, thanks.
Russ here, Russ there, Russ everywhere, on every video. Aren't you guys supposed to be a whole team behind that YT channel ?
This plugin is for single tracks or more for bus? ;d
I have both, the Scheps gets more use on the 2 - Out for widening - I also have a BLA B173 and there is def a similarity in the sound, in a good way
it's interesting how different the 12K shelf and the 10K Mid Band sound from each other . It seems the shelf brings other bands from octaves below 12K thus quite aggressive . Not referring to the vid , I own the plug-in
Is it CPU heavy?

just download free demo and try , it's up to you:)
Its 29 dollars now. Whats your excuse? ;)
Why get this when you can just put separate EQ’s on the L and R channels and change them slightly from each other

does it matter that your meter is in the red or is it only like that for demonstration purposes?

Yes seems to have extra "air" and additional flavours and colours to just for good taste:), so it's worth to download it and try for free :)
Can the pre amp on the Shep 73 be used as a regular mic pre to record?
+bestronald0 Why Not that's what i'm going to do also some use the Neve from the NLS for a Neve sound on the vocal.

Scheps 73🔥💯🔥
What compressor would u pair up in a chain with this eq
It depends on what I have on the track
Pro Tools Expert Did you use McDdsp 6030 Ultimate compressor on bass, kick and snare? if i'm wrong please let me know:)
i really like the V series but i really love the extra stuff the scheps 73 has so i plan on buying it
good decison :)it will be my next purchase too:)

I use the V4 more than the V3 so Scheps 73 would make sense for me. I like it from what I can tell on youtube.

It's a good product, but after tring Nebula 3 with the right libraries...you can't go back anymore;)
Which Nebula/Aqua plugin simulates the Neve 1073 the best?
I can hear a vague buzz on the bass with Scheps. Sounds clean through the EQ3
awesome!!!!
